A Black Cat Crossed His Path.......2005-07-27
The caretaker of an estate comes to consult Perry Mason about his cat. Perry explains why something trivial could develop into something big - like rejecting a client whose suit would have destroyed a prosecuting witness' alibi (p.6). Perry cautions Mr. Charles Ashton about his situation, and the Peter Laxter will (made two days before he died in a fire). Perry writes a letter for Mr. Ashton, who the leaves. But Della Street looks down to the street, and sees Mr. Ashton is being followed. Perry likes trial law because it isn't routine, and involves human nature (Chapter II).
The investigation takes them to the private nurse who was on duty the night of the fire. This conversation is instructive. Edith DeVoe witnesses a strange event a few hours before the fire, but can't be sure of the identity of the man in the garage. Why was a hose from the exhaust pipe of that car running into the heating system air vent? Would death by fire mask carbon monoxide poisoning (Chapter V)? Dr. Jason explains how he could make a determination based on the condition of the body. After they exhume the body, Dr. Jason says to go ahead with the investigation of murder. When District Attorney Hamilton Burger goes to the house to question Sam Laxter they find Charles Ashton murdered! Perry goes to see Winifred Laxter, and finds Ashton's cat. Her boyfriend Douglas Keene brought it to her for safekeeping.
Mason and Drake go to visit Douglas Keene. To avoid notice, they park over a block away and walk there. The apartment is empty, as if the occupant hastily left. There are red spatters in the bathroom washbowl. Mason and Drake the find out when Edith DeVoe married Frank Oakley (the other heir of Peter Laxter). When they search for Douglas Keene at Winifred Laxter's shop they learn he has fled. They get information on Ashton's crutch, and a new suspect to consider. In Chapter XII Sergeant Holcomb summarizes the case against Douglas Keene, and tells Mason that they found the cat. (Is the cat a red herring to distract the reader?) Chapter XIII has a scene in Mason's office that is as funny as it is educational. Chapter XIV tells how Mason is able to bring in Douglas Keene to the police.
In Chapter XVI perry uses an assumed name (Ashton's partner) and goes with Della to a hotel, posing as a just married couple. The purpose of this disguise is to track the new car bought by Watson Clammert. By reporting it stolen, the police will stop and question the real Watson Clammert (Chapter XVII)! It works.
The Preliminary Hearing begins, and the witnesses are questioned. Mason explains the importance of holding and safeguarding the caretaker's cat, and what would have happened if another cat was brought to Ashton's room. Mason continues, and provides a shocking surprise ending (Chapter XVIII). Now all of his previous actions result in a solution to the mystery (Chapter XIX).
This is an interesting story, but I found the ending too contrived. It might work in a film where the viewer can't pause and refer to previous events. Another fault is the disregard for various laws in those seemingly simpler times.
It's Perry Mason's Life!.......2001-06-18
Very well plotted mystery entangled with discord among heirs, missing property, suspicious death of the millionaire, two murders and the caretaker's cat. Mason often uses unconventional tricks to make a cat's-paw of authorities, and the trick he uses in this book is extremely superb.
Della and Drake try to stop Mason from skating on thin ice. Mason retorts "What a hell can a man lose? He only has a lease on life. All that really counts is a man's ability to live, to get the most out of it as he goes through it, and he gets the most kick out of it by playing a no-limit game." Anyway, Perry Mason gets a lot out of life; he lives a full life and he really enjoys it. How I envy him!
Classic Perry Mason. Surprise conclusion........1997-03-27
Once again, the lawyer-detective solves the mystery. This is a classic with a slightly unusual ending for a Perry Mason novel. I cannot say more without ruining the mystery.

Cat of Many Tails - Among Ellery Queen's Best Stories.......2006-02-09
Cat of Many Tails is Ellery Queen at his best. Written in 1949, this suspenseful story, as much a thriller as a mystery, sits almost exactly midway in the Ellery Queen canon.
Cat of Many Tales illustrates the willingness of Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee to take risks by deviating from their highly successful formula, that of the Ellery Queen deductive puzzler. In this story Dannay and Lee focus more on the victims as actual individuals, and not simply as pieces in a puzzle. Each victim is realistically described; these vignettes add a strong emotional dimension to the story.
The middle chapters examine New York City itself, not the geographical entity, but the living, breathing metropolis of seven and one-half million people. Dannay and Lee offer a fascinating sociological study of collective fear as thousands of individuals become terrorized by the actions of a single, unknown assailant. Contrastingly, the later chapters shift focus from mass psychology to the motivation and psychology of a single, disturbed individual.
Despite this somewhat atypical structure, Cat Of Many Tails is a solid example of Ellery Queen's remarkable deductive skills. Without giving too much away, Cat of Many Tails is an example of one of Ellery Queen's challenging solutions within a solution, a multi-layered conclusion.
Cat of Many Tails ranks among the best Ellery Queen mysteries, worthy of five stars.
Well constructed whydunit, but...........2005-03-14
Maybe I was influenced by the mildly repugnant paperback cover of the 1965 edition I first read, but I still have a memory that this mystery has an unpleasant air about it. It's biggest puzzle is what connects the victims that are being strangled by a serial killer.
I wonder why Anthony Boucher picked this as one of the 5 books in the "World's Great Novels of Detection." Obviously he felt compelled to include a Queen title, and maybe others were unavailble to the publisher, or more often printed. I read it on his "advice," and while not bad, I guess i was disappointed when it didn't match his other choices, which remain to this day - 40 years later - books I read over and over.
first class whodunit.......2002-03-15
This book belongs certainly to the best books by Queen.
Once again the reader is stunned by the solution which is as usual strictly logical enriched by psychoanalysis.
An extraordinary mix of thriller (the description of New York
under fear) and whodunit.

Customer Reviews:
The one book you'll need to get going.......2006-02-16
If you want to learn on your own, this is the book you need. I bought the paper back, took it to the copy place to cut the spine and spiral bind it with clear plastic covers. Now it stays open to the page I'm working from. Her directions are clear for every sitch and they are organized approporiately by type. Charts tell what each stitch is great and poor for. Easy to use without reading; but all beginers and re-starters should thoroughly read the begining to learn the other how-tos of needlepoint. Great for working patterns (painted canvas) or on your own designs. It may be the only book you need.
My copy has gone soft from use!.......2002-03-10
I own both the first and second editions of this book. Of all the beautiful needlepoint books in my collection, this is the one I go back to over and over. There is information for the beginner as well as advanced stitcher. In eighteen years, I've never picked it up that it didn't learn something new or valuable.
A MUST FOR THE "NEEDLEPOINTER"!.......2002-01-25
I have loved needlepoint now for over thirty years. Probably one of the greatest things my mother gave me was a beginners needlepoint class when I was eight years old. I basket-weaved away for many, many years. Then, I discovered this book. It took my love for needlepoint to new levels of creativity. There are so many easy to follow directions for stiches that I had never seen before. This book brought out a new and creative aspect to my stiches. From the brand new beginner to the heartend veteran, this book is a must have! I have several other guides in my needlepoint library, yet I always come back to this one.
Easy to understand.......2001-08-01
This book is great for a beginner to an expert.
It details hundreds of different stiches and has great pictures so you can see what stiches should look like. I goes through all aspects of needlepoint from picking out a canvas to finishing it.
A new and improved Black Book!.......2001-07-16
Like most stitchers, I've used "the Black Book" for years. The new edition is a must-have for anyone who does needlepoint. All the good stuff you've used in the past is still there - lessons on how to begin, the tools of the trade, hundreds of stitches and how to use them, and fnishing instructions. Part of the reason that Christensen has been such a universally used resource is that her step-by-step instructions on how to do different stiches are easy to follow. As wonderful as the old edition was, this new one is even better. Not only are there more stiches - and very useful ones - but the information on tools and materials has been drastically revised. One of the most significant changes that caught my attention is that unlike the previous edition, Christensen is now recommending routine use of frames. Of course, this is consistent with what most of us have been doing for years. Christensen makes some general observations about the new types of threads available and how to use them, but she doesn't discuss them in detail. This is probably a wise choice since the vast variety of threads has been constantly changing and will no doubt continue to do so. My one complaint is that when selecting projects to show in the book, Christensen has very deliberately chosen to drastically limit the number of projects that have holiday themes, particularly Christmas. This seems like a strange choice since you only have to walk in to any needlepoint shop to know that Christmas projects make up the bulk of the business. Other holidays, including those of different religions and traditions are also popular. Personally, I almost never stitch anything but Christmas stockings and ornaments, and most stitchers I know are the same. Other than this personal bias, however, I have found the new edition to be an excellent improvement on an already great book.

Customer Reviews:
simple, but inspiring journal/book.......2006-03-15
I joined a "MOMS" group (Ministry Of Mothers Sharing) at my church, and we use this "text"/journal for our "class". Considering it's a pretty fast and easy read (what mom has a lot of time on her hands after all??) it's a rather in-depth journaling experience. This is a Christian-based journal, and I highly recommend finding or forming your own MOMS group (purchase facilitator's manual to start your own). It's inspiring to meet other women who feel and experience the same things as you!
But the journal is great even on its own. There are seven "chapters" that touch on: 1)self-esteem and self-acceptance; 2)stress, worries, and anxiety; 3)everyday spirituality; 4)feelings; 5)personal growth; 6)expressing values in friendships; 7)continuing the journey. Each chapter is imbedded with questions and space to journal your answers.
While some of the issues you choose to journal about may be about being a mother, the journal is broad enough for any woman (or man) to use to find better self-understanding in whatever type of life she/he leads. For example, I've found much of my journaling is about my relationship with my husband more than with my kids, but other women in my MOMS group do focus more on their kids. Some focus more on their relationship with their parents. Whatever you focus on in the present may be a different topic than one you would focus on in a few years, so some women take the MOMS class again (or do another journal).

Customer Reviews:
Every working mother needs this book........2003-02-25
Most working mothers talk to themselves anyway ... it's the best way to work through our issues, conflicts, etc. This book gives a great framework in which to have these conversations so that they are more productive. The book is organized in such a way that I can pinpoint which chapter will best guide me through my current struggle. I recommend this to any woman trying to balance different facets of her life, whether they be work, family, PTA, volunteer work, etc.
Excellent Guide.......2002-10-12
This is a terrific guide to help working moms gain clarity about their goals - both career and personal. I highly recommend it to any woman struggling with the work/life balance issues most of us face today. This book was a great help to me.
An investment in your future.......2002-09-20
As a working mom with a toddler, I have had limited time (and energy) to reflect on the direction of my career. This book gave me the opportunity to organize my thoughts, think beyond the day to day and see the big picture. The topics and questions in the journal allowed me to think and take risks in a safe and structured way. I was able to focus on these issues around my daughter's schedule. I looked forward to writing in the journal with a cup of coffee early in the morning before my daughter woke up or with a glass of wine at night after she went to sleep! I now feel much more connected with what I want from my career and a better plan on how to get there.
Prioritize your life.......2002-09-06
Spending a little alone time with this book has helped me really identify whats important to me and how to be happier day to day.
I highly recommend it!!
Fantastic!.......2002-09-04
This book is great. A must have for any working mom, aspiring working mom, or working mom in transition who feels overwhelmed, intitmidated or fears her real dream. Taub breaks down the myriad dilemmas and responsibilities we moms/working moms face into little manageable thoughts or questions that almost seem customized for each reader. By asking the reader in a gentle way to look at a particular issue, including taking a look at the reader's past, present and future, Taub passes on a confidence to the reader that you can actually do something about it rather than fear, freeze or get angry. Taub calls these questions "Conversations" and indeed, sometimes it feels like a conversation is being held. By answering these questions, pondering them, or simply reading how Taub resolved her own issues, is inspiring not to mention result-producing. Furthermore, it's the type of book you can read five minutes at a time -- perfect for moms on the go. Taub's success at breaking down the big questions into little ones enables the reader to delve into an issue little by little, as time permits, perfect for all moms. A keeper on any mom or working mom's shelf, counter, car pool line, etc.

Book Description
In the heart of Northwest Indiana's Calumet Region sits Whiting, Indiana. Born and raised in this "industrial Mayberry," author Albert R. Koch relives his experiences in this small town and beyond through this refreshing collection of essays.
Help Mom with the Dishes is a journey through Koch's life, featuring people, places, and extraordinary moments experienced by a not-so-ordinary guy. These episodes convey the wonder of youth, the potency of humor, the power of learning, and the poignancy of emotions. For Koch, what happens in the past provides direction for the future. One can decide to either live life looking in the rearview mirror or focus on what lies ahead. One can use life experiences to strengthen and grow, or be satisfied with a mediocre life. Early on, Koch's choice is to "Help Mom with the dishes."
Viewed through the parade of seasons, these distinctive, exceptional moments during Koch's continual quest for understanding and meaning are recalled with thoughtful, reflective insight-from classroom to factory, factory to campus, campus to classroom. Over that time, he's learned an important lesson: The triumph over sadness is not easy. It requires an unflinching belief in the goodness of people, a positive sense of humor, and perhaps, too, a little faith and reverence for things we cannot see.

Book Description
How Close Are You to Your Mom? "Every family has a way in which they relate, a certain mythology that can't be explained by black-and-white letters on an ancestry chart. How we function and are treated as daughters affects how we age, process the experiences in our lives, and in turn treat our own families. " There is a unique bond between mothers and their daughters, one not often understood until adulthood, or fully appreciated until after death. There is much you can learn from the women who raised you-family traditions, secrets, histories-but you have to know what to ask. In this deeply personal book, Teresa Lauer examines the nature of mother-daughter relationships and provides lessons on how to strengthen the lines of communication and understanding by providing a series of "starter questions." No matter how distant you feel your relationship with your mother is, or how well you feel you know one another, there are ways to draw you closer, questions that can be asked and answered. You will discover how to speak from the heart in the complex relationship of mother and daughter and transform that relationship into one of respect and appreciation. The time to start asking your questions is now, as none of us are guaranteed a tomorrow. These questions you'll ask are not only important to you, but to the generations who will come after.
Customer Reviews:
Please do this before it is to late!.......2006-10-03
After previewing and reading this book, I was amazed at how much I hadn't asked my mom before she died an early death at 71. I imagine I believed I had all the time in the world to discuss the important and the trivial questions with her. Now, as with the author, it is to late. I wanted some of her special recipes and to know about her life growing up in more detail. Even asking the few relatives who are still alive, they didn't have the information I needed to know. I did find a diary, which answered "some" of my questions, but not the ones I wanted to ask. Teresa Lauer has written a 'masterpiece to remind us all that we may not have the time to ask the questions we want and need to know. The manner in which she gives suggestions of what to ask sparks so much". I implore every woman to purchase this book and use it. You don't have to ask all the questions at once, but ask something new each time you see them. You can even tell them why you are asking. I feel each mother would be delighted to know their daughter had so much interest in their lives. If you mother is gone and you have a daughter, this mighty tool can draw you closer to them. And you can use this book with your dad or son in the degree you choose. As well, you might want to share or give your daughter a copy of the book. In this, you can find out so much about each other.
Such a wonderful, insightful, and inspiring book and one you will always cherish. I am purchasing at least eight books as gifts for my friends. Well done, Ms. Lauer, and thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Deborah Spicer

Book Description
Does your son or daughter know your favorite smell, or if you cross your arms right-over- left or left-over-right? Bring your family tree to life. Quirky questions let you "create the connection that lasts forever." Family tree names and dates are flat and lifeless. Seeing mom, dad, grandma or grandpa's perception of themselves - in their own handwriting - paints an image that even photos and videos can't capture. "I'm Just Like My Mom
I'm Just Like My Dad" is a fun way to share characteristics and preferences that make us each unique - and yet alike. Create a family treasure for generations to come.

A Real Treasure.......2005-11-10
It was fun and thought provoking to jot down details for our son to learn about his parents. I think he'll be surprised by some answers. I know he'll recognize some characteristics and preferences where he's just like his mom or dad. When answering the questions, I realized there is a lot I don't know about my own parents. Wish this book had been available when my parents were living. I would love to have their perceptions of themselves. Memories fade so fast.
Book Description
This journal book is Just For Mom's (and Grandma, too). It's about Moms of all ages. Typically, what is handed down from our mothers is both a natural and material inheritance. It is a legacy of genes, behaviors, mannerisms, money, and property. Unless there is some special effort put forth, a lot about Mom is lost upon her death. The purpose of this journal book is for mothers to record their story. It is meant to be a living life gift to their sons and daughters. In this way, mothers can leave a complete legacy, both tangible and intangible, to their children. The journal speaks to the life and times of a mother. It talks about the father of the mother's children. It chats about her pastimes and notable accomplishments. It culminates with Mom's acknowledgements, beliefs, and advice for her children. The journal is styled in a question and answer format. This will help you write down the memories, thoughts, and ideas you wish to share with your children. Please remember, much of what makes up who your children are comes from you, so your story is also their story.

Book Description
Millions of WWII veterens like Ernest Personeous, sent home letters throughout their time in "the big one" and many more of "the greatest generation" went on to long productive careers in the militry or in civilian public service careers whose origins could be found in their World War II Service. Here is one such story, made compelling by the fact that it covers most of the period of the WWII on the ground, the post-war occupation and the fight to marry the girl he found and grew to love in Germany. After the war it chronicles 29 more years of Air Force Service and Army Civil Service careers during the Korean, Viet Nam, and Cold War eras. With vivid contemporary commentary to his loved ones and enhanced with contemporary photos "Letters to Mom" is a fascinating addition to our "America Remembers" series of historical and biographical chronicles of 2oth Century America.
