Customer Reviews:
reference, user friendly.......2007-05-17
One of the first spinning books I purchased, easy to use, indexed well, spiral bound and small enough to take along in my knitting/ spinning supplies.
A reference book I am always picking up to read; pest controls, hand carding, different spinning methods, washing yarn. Also a good bibliography for further reading.
Indispensable!.......2006-09-07
I'm a brand new spinner, and this book has helped me immensely. It has helped me to better understand the parts of the wheel and what they do, how to draft, how to troubleshoot problems such as the yarn not winding onto the bobbin or overtwisting. It has a wealth of information about all aspects of spinning, from start to finish, in a concise and useful format. The way the book is constructed so you can stand it up and refer to it while spinning is also a big plus. Highly recommended!
Right On.......2006-02-25
Great little book to chuck in with the traveling wheel/spindle gives the pertinent information with reasonable pictures easy to use, easy to pack has become a constant companion. Coil bound with heavy card pages lays flat even outdoors.
a good book for those just starting their library.......2002-03-01
If you've just learned to spin, this book will enhance your library. It is very clear and complete. It explains all those terms that get thrown around.... Grist, twist, ratio... This book will help you keep it all straight.
Don't Spin Without It.......2001-12-11
I had enough money to buy one book and picked this one over the Amos Big Book of Handspinning. Its compact size is perfect for keeping in my workbasket, it is also a perfect size for "going on the road." The information is clearly presented and valuable. And...it lacks the demeaning comments of the Amos book, for those spinners that use double tredle.

Book Description
The thriving city of Singapore belies its wild beginnings 270 years ago when crocodiles, tigers, leopards and boars abounded in its thick jungles and lost lagoons. But over the last 20 years, Singaporeans have completed an ambitious project to beautify the island by preserving many of its
tropical trees, plants, and flowers, and even some of its exotic mango swamps. Superbly illustrated throughout, this book explores the new parks and gardens that have transformed both the look and the environment of Singapore.

Book Description
An insightful analysis of the history of suburban development and an exciting new approach to suburban planning. This book was devised to help designers, planners, and developers of suburban communities deliver on their traditional promise to offer "the best of both worlds." The authors take a hard look at more than a century of suburban planning and analyze developer-designed suburbs. Most importantly, they offer a dynamic approach to suburban development, rooted in historical examples and based on open space planning methods that can be applied to new or existing developments to transform them into sustainable, living communities. Offers an in-depth look at the historical origins of modern suburbia--from the nineteenth century to post-World War II developments such as Riverside, Levittown, and others. * Analyzes "classic" success stories of new town design, including Reston, Virginia and Columbia, Maryland. * Diagnoses the problematic aspects of most developer-designed suburbs. * Outlines methods for developing open space networks linking private and public spaces of all scales by means of greenways, pedestrian connections, and redesigned streets. * Explores new trends in suburban design, including Technoburbs, Ecoburbs, Pedestrian Pockets, and neotraditional communities. * Features over 100 photographs, line drawings, maps, and site plans. CYNTHIA L. GIRLING is Associate Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon. An ASLA Certificate of Honor recipient and the 1996-97 President of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture, she is the author of numerous articles on the planning and design of communities and their open spaces. KENNETH I. HELPHAND is Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon and Coeditor of Landscape Journal. He is the author of Colorado: Visions of an American Landscape.

From the supplier: Urban open space has been relatively neglected in Australia, and has therefore become targeted by developers as suitable for private or semi-private entrepreneurial activities, often with the help of state government. Some in the Melbourne government feel turning open spaces or parks into businesses will stimulate the local economy, yet critics feel social equity is often best served by preserving some sense of a natural environment within urban areas. This issue is best determined by community decision, although in many cases public rights have been legislated away.

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Landscape and Urban Planning, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
The internal reserve-community space at the rear of residential lots with no street frontage was a conspicuously innovative feature of the 'town-planned' or 'garden' suburb in the first three decades of the 20th century in many countries. Often intended as a playground for children, designers also suggested the internal reserve as an ideal locus for community building through leisure-time activities such as sport, agriculture, and passive recreation. Within a decade they were increasingly viewed as nuisance, or even dangerous, spaces. Many retain this stigma, unhelped by community apathy and governmental disinterest amid the broader neglect of the public realm. Drawing on the Australian experience, this paper acknowledges some of the shortcomings of internal reserves but points toward a more positive set of leisure futures. Many of these small, semi-private spaces may yet prove to be valuable community assets in the new millennium.

Customer Reviews:
Relationships Can Be Magical.......2007-04-09
This book is an ocean of sophisticated learning expressed in very simple, readable terms and engaging stories. The title spoke to me instantly and the ideas quickly made sense as I devoured the entire book in a single sitting. The idea of looking at my life without judgment is a radical concept that has been truly impactful - very freeing on so many levels. Another idea spoke to me clearly the first time I read it -- the idea that I am not "my story." I instantly understood that I was telling the same story about myself over and over again and it was driving decisions I was making today, at 46 years old. I have bought this book for dozens of my friends who have benefited from the Kane's wisdom. I highly recommend this compelling book.
Magic, Magic, Magic.......2006-05-12
This is the second book by Ariel & Shya Kane that I;ve read. It is magical!
The hints, principles and information they give regarding the theme of "Relationship" is amazing. If you want to have working relationships, read it!
What is so great about this book is, that the theme "relationship" doesn't necessarily mean love-relationships, it is valid for all kinds of relationships:
Love, work, parents, friends, and so on. This is not to forget the most important one, the one where everything begins:
The relationship with yourself!
The Kanes have the key to transform something ordinary into something extraordinary, a "normal" relationship into something magical.
My wife and I are together now for 14 years and our relationship is new, fresh, exciting and very loving every day. Thanks to Ariel and Shya Kane!!!
over simplified unenlightening..........2006-03-28
I found this book to be very disappointing, uninspiring and far too simplistic to be of any use. The authors speak as if they are the authority in all things concerning relationships but the book certainly does not reflect any "special" insight...
An Enlightened Approach to Relationships.......2006-03-07
This book, whose title at first requires a little interpretation, is really about creating magical relationships. It reads very easily, is written by two people who experience on a daily basis what they are talking about, and it leaves you with a wonderful sense of what is possible in relationship. Personally, after reading this book, I couldn't wait to go to my husband and be more loving towards him.
The ideas are simple. Know yourself, be aware of the mechanical behaviors that have been passed on to you through your family line and culture, be aware of the toxic forces at work in your environment, and above all stop working on yourself and on your partner. Trying to change your partner is not the way to go at all.
I am impressed by the respect that the authors have for relationships. At a time when so often in our lives and on television, today's love affair becomes tomorrow's divorce, it is wonderful to encounter this deep respect for relationships. The authors view relationships as another opportunity to know yourself, to find a "sanctuary" and experience intimacy at a deep and satisfying level. Your relationship is not something to work on, fix or change; rather, it is a wonderful journey with a partner towards enlightenment.
This book has made a definite impact on my life in general and on my relationship with my husband. Coming from a cultural background where women dominate and men can never do it right enough, and where fighting between two partners is often equated to love, this book has shown me a new way of looking at myself, my life and my relationship and has offered me the possibility of having a real life partner rather than an opponent in a never ending fight.
I also recommend another book by Ariel and Shya Kane: "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work". Based on the same idea that working hard to change something does not foster resolution or transformation, this book is also a life-altering read. I encourage you to check them both out.
Make Your Relationship Come Alive!.......2005-11-15
I really cannot recommend this book highly enough. After seven years married my husband and I were having problems, we still loved each other but still seemed to upset each other too often. This book helped my SO much to see what I was doing to make my relationship unhappy - and I had no idea! I have read many, many self-help books but this one actually helped save my marriage!
After reading it my husband and I (on the verge of separating) went to one of the author's workshops in Hamburg and after that we never looked back! Meeting Ariel & Shya Kane showed me a possibility of a joyful marriage I never imagined possible and today I am happier than I ever dreamed I could be!
Read this book - no matter what your relationship is like it will help you be happier, I promise you!
