Preachy self-promotion.......2007-08-16

The author uses the guise of having a conversation with his dog to preach his views on life, character and morals to the listener. The idea that these are "conversations with his dog" is ridiculous. Several times in the book, the author shamelessly promotes his other books, etc. I found that tacky. The whole concept for the book just doesn't work in this case.

Entertaining and insightful.......2006-05-19

For this particular book, motivational speaker Zig Ziglar employees a highly unusual and interesting method of getting the reader (or in my case, listener) to think. This entire volume is written as if Ziglar's dog, whom he affectionately refers to as "Dirty Dog" has co-written the book. It consists of many different fictional conversations that Ziglar (whom Dirty Dog affectionately refers to as "Dad") has had with Dirty Dog. Dad and Dirty Dog try to discover what makes each other tick and in the process are able to build a greater bond with one another. While being entertained by these conversations, many life lessons are presented -- lessons that teach compassion and understanding, and quite a few Biblical principals that if applied to daily life, can make for a richer, happier existence for the reader.
The lessons taught are simple and basic but it is these same simple basic principals that so many of us neglect or forget in our self-centered day to day living.
Ziglar's insight comes through loud and clear in the audio presentation in particular. His reading of the book lets the listener feel as if he's hearing these "conversations" first hand.
I admit that I was a little put off by the unusual presentation of this material and didn't actually plan to listen anymore after the first disc. But several of Ziglar's statements stayed with me over the next few days and I found myself wanting to hear more. I'm glad I played the other three discs because the listening experience became more and more enjoyable (and valuable) as the the book continued.
I recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed the author's previous works.

A Dissappointing Read.......2005-12-29

This book caught my eye because I own and grew up with Pembroke Welch Corgis. I had not read any other books by Zig Ziglar but had heard of him. At first I found the material somewhat simplistic like someone is reading a book for children and the chapters hold this old fashioned "father knows best" advice that is outdated and old news. I was espcially offended by a chaper in which he explains to his dog how it was ok for his wife to "spank" him. He states ". . . I believe that when kids misbehave, mild corporal punishment is a good approach to take." Then he quotes the bible to back this up. I can't believe he is using this dog in this way, he is not an authority on dogs and it is never effective or ok to hit a dog. The book also had alot of references to religion and the bible. I wished I would have known what was in this book, I would have save my money by not buying it. It was a very disappointing book.

This book touches on why we have and love our dogs. It was a page-turner for me. Any dog owner can relate to the reasons for owning pets and their special bonds with us. I found it a good book to add to my dog book collection.

wonderful book.......2007-10-07

I am female, I built the redbird 20 yrs ago. It is the most awesome paddle. It has been to Minnesota, Columbia river, etc. I found the directions clear and easy, I lofted the stations, did everything. The most difficulty I had was the fiberglassing: Colorado winters get cold and the epoxy clouded some on the outside. The shop couldn't keep up with the cold. This book also guides you through design features that help you build the shape for the funtion you desire. After 20 yrs, this book is still on my shelf.

A book that will help you build a beautiful canoe........2007-08-31

I like this book. Moorse's canoes are striking, but I think that a lot of what is presented may be beyond the skill of the casual builder. It is obvious the Ted Moores is a fabulous woodworker. The problem is that I am not. I really enjoyed reading how he builds his canoes and looking at the wonderful photos that are in the book.

Personally, I don't like external stems on a canoe. They widen the entry line and just look weird to me. Building them is also a fiddly undertaking and I'm not sure that they really add much. I built my canoe using both Canoecraft and Gilpatrick's book . . . I found the latter a much more approachable text.

If I were a master woodworker I would only follow Moore's book and I would have the most beautiful canoe that I could build. I'm not a master woodworker so I follow Gilpatrik and I am fully satisfied.

I recommed anyone that is interested in canoe building to buy this book. It is just amazing what he can do with wood.

A must have for canoe building.......2007-01-09

A very good book about Cedar Strip Canoe building and its history. I have looked at other canoe building books online, but I kept seeing this book pop up. And I now know why people kept raving about it. It is a very well done book that's a progretion of the authors and others knowledge. Right off the top of my head I can't remember what addition he's up to, but he learns and releases new additions with more information. I have not got my canoe done yet, but I have started. One suggestion, read or at least familiarize yourself with all of the techniques/chapters in the book before you start. You can always look back, but you can't always fix the wood if you miss something. TAKE MY WORD ON IT!!!

beautiful book to build a beautiful canoe.......2006-02-25

Coupled with Building a Strip Canoe by Gil Gilpatrick this book will explain everything you need to know to craft an absolutely beautiful canoe. This book begins with a description of canoe history and follows up with desireable characteristics of various canoe designs. While the actual process is described very well, there are some technical aspects that a person with less woodworking experience would have to search elsewhere to find an explaination. I many places the author explains the best way to do a task as well as some options for alternative construction. The method described in this book really is "fine" canoebuilding. The finishing details the author desribes are what will really set your craft ahead of all other do-it-yourself canoes on the water. Keep in mind that there are no plans for actual canoes in this book. If you are someone who is experienced in "lofting" or technical drawing maybe you can make your own plans from the specs the author gives for his boats but for most people they just expect you to buy your plans from Bear Mountain Canoe or some other design house. That aside, this is an excellent book to help in the construction of any canoe and it left me absolutely jazzed to begin my own boat.

Great but.......2005-05-12

Don't expect to get patterns to build a canoe with this book. All of the other reviews didn't tell you this. If you want to build one of the boats mentioned in the book you have to go to the authors website and purchase them seperately for another $69. If you want to build a boat with this added cost look at getting Stripper's Guide to Canoe-Building it has full size patterns.

I have build the Redbird canoe. The book was almost perfect to help me building. Some minor details were left to my own fantasy. It was very hard to understand the special terminology and translate it (I talk and think in dutch). The result is great however. I can advise everybody who is thinking about building a strip canoe to read this book first. All issues , possible problems, step by step plans, measurements etc. are adequately handled in this book.

This is the first book to get before all other boatbuilding texts. Ted and Merilyn have so clearly illustrated,both in words and pictures building a stripper, someone with ten thumbs will produce a thing of beauty.

Canoecraft provides a wide variety canoe designs for building. Historical pictures show canoe shops with proud workers. Warning: I've used the strongback as suggested in this book and ended up with a slightly warped, but paddleable boat.

Best build it yourself book I have seen........1998-10-23

I have built the PROSPECTOR and the REDBIRD. The information in this book is accurate and easy to understand. I researched books before selecting CANOECRAFT and have found it the best source of information and guidance. Several times I have been stopped by people who are interested in my canoes. When they ask where I got my plans and instructions, I tell them about CANOECRAFT by Moores and Mohr. Thank you Ted and Merilyn.

This book is a must for the true paphiopedilum grower. This book contains in-situ photographs, and cultural information for all but the newest paphiopedilum species. The Parvi's are the least covered group of paphs. Highly recommended.

THE BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ.......2005-08-12

THAN YOU to the author is so inadequate for such a book as this.
If there was ever a book that everyone should read this is the one.
Having had three kinds of cancer myself, I can totally relate to so much of what Rosanne Kalick has written. Her book has brought tears to my eyes and smiles on my lips.
I know in my heart that most people mean well with their comments but at the same time they come across as appearing to be brash, uncaring and sometimes downright stupid. When we are in pain, or feeling so sick from our treatments it's often times hard to smile through it all and try not to react to these comments. I know also that many times we as patients tend to over react to what others may innocently say.
This book is a great guide for all of us, both patients, family, caregivers, friends or neighbors. We can all benefit from reading this book and hopefully applying it to our lives.
I have ordered several more copies of this book to share with others. I know it will be going through my church family as well as a lot of my friends. Some are already telling me they can't wait to get their copies.

Cancer Etiquette, by Rosanne Kalick, is not only an etiquette guide for friends, family, and caregivers of cancer patients. It not only tells us what to say or not to say; what to do or not to do; what to give or not to give. The book could be thought of as a guide for all our interactions in life, and the love, compassion, kindness, and joy that are so necessary. The author is a two-time cancer survivor who has been able to distill what has happened to her, including her good and bad interactions with people, into this detailed, valuable, life-affirming, and timeless guide.

This book will be helpful for everyone. We have all been in the situation of not knowing what to say or do for someone who has cancer...or any other life threatening disease for that matter.

The book is very readable. It's clear, conversational, not heavy-handed at all. Some of the stories are even humorous. It's got a lot of practical advice for friends and relatives, and also for doctors and nurses. There are suggestions of ways to help out and examples of well meaning, but NOT helpful things as well. Ms. Kalick also talks about connections and community and love. She tells of how groups of people have done things to support a cancer patient, and how much it meant to that patient. Again, there are good suggestions of how to go about organizing something.

Ms. Kalick speaks of her own experiences with treatment for 2 different cancers. She is able to tell what made her feel better, and what made her feel worse. Some of her descriptions are very moving, but she is able to poke fun at herself as well.

This book should be in every doctor's office in the country...for all to read in the waiting room, AND for the doctors and staff to read as well.

An extremely helpful and wise book.......2005-06-18

Who hasn't heard the words, "I have cancer?" Unfortunately, when this happens, most of us are either speechless, or blurt out the wrong things.

Thanks to incredibly perceptive and wise author, Rosanne Kalick, I now know what to say and do when I hear these life-changing words. Kalick and cancer survivors she interviewed have been on the receiving end of countless tactless remarks, and I feel confident that I'll never make those mistakes again.

Sometimes, I learned, the best thing to say is *nothing.* "Take your cues from the patient," Kalick suggests. Respond to what he or she is feeling. "Over time, helping the cancer patient restore some sense of control in his or her life can be an invaluable gift."

This book will be extremely valuable for anyone dealing with cancer, and it's also an excellent gift for anyone in the health care field. Give it to future doctors entering medical school, and anyone beginning a career in medical services - such as mammography technicians.
