Customer Reviews:
The Big Book Of Crochet.......2007-10-09
This book may be the only project book you will ever need. My sister and I both own it. We have made several items with it's very understandable and very workable patterns. The pictures are very nice too. I give this book five stars*****. A serious crocheter will not be dissapointed.
Lots of variety.......2007-09-06
This book has tons of great projects, from doilies to afghans to mittens. It is well worth the money to get so many patterns that I will use. The instructions have been easy to follow so far, and I haven't found any errors.
I enjoy this book.......2007-04-07
I have found quite a few projects in this book to be very nice. There are a total of 17 afghans for the home. There are 16 patterns for baby including afghans and outfits/bibs/socks. There are also pillows, tablerunners, tissuebox covers, wraps, cardigans, etc. They list 120 patterns. Not bad for the price. The pictures are nice and the directions are easy to follow.
Granted, the patterns are not cutting edge or hip, just tried and true patterns that are enjoyable to do. The only thing I can find that is disapointing is that they do not tell you the Name Brand of the Yarn that was used and the exact color. They are specific, however, on the weight and amount of yarn. ie: medium worsted weight, #4, colors are listed.
Listen to Yael.......2006-11-07
I should have listened to Yael's review... dead on. Nothing special about this book. I'll be donating it to the library.
One of my Faves.......2006-04-01
This is one of my favorites out of about a dozen or so that I've purchased recently. I think it has a lot of cute ideas, and I've made a couple of the projects. I found them easy to understand and follow. I first found this at the library, which is when I decided to add it to my evergrowing book collection.

Customer Reviews:
Some nice patterns.......2007-05-22
Overall, I am pleased with this book. While I would not make everything in here, there are enough projects that I like to make the purchase worthwhile. Many of the projects are rated as beginner.
I like quite a few of the projects in the kitchen chapter--lots of cute hotpads, coasters, and dishcloths here. The rug chapter has some nice projects too--though I think a couple would lend themselves better to afghans than rugs.
The sweaters are nice--especially the Dawn to Dusk Sweater and the Hooded Jacket. These are not "cutting edge" fashion, but are nice and classic for those of us who don't want to be "hip" or "funky". The Girl's Scrap Poncho is nice too.
There is a thread crochet chapter, but this really isn't my interest, though if you like that, there were 13 projects included.
The Bazaar and Toy chapters have quite a few cute projects (especially the Toy chapter). The afghans are nice, though the two I liked the best use a double ended crochet hook--something I've not tried yet.
Overall, it's a nice book. I still rank Crochet From the Heart and Crochet for Caring and Sharing as my favorites. If you can only get one, you may want to check those two out before you buy anything.
Not entirely for scraps.......2003-07-12
I would have given this book 3.5 stars if I could, but realistically, that would have been because I have an extensive crochet book collection and when I purchased this book it was solely for it's value as a scrap project book. Now that that's put into perspective, I think that the average crocheter would give this book 4 stars.
As far as scrap projects go, this book was lacking the substance I was looking for. Most of the projects call for worsted weight yarn or size 10 crochet cotton so you will have to be creative if you are looking for projects to use up the scraps of some of your fancier and different weight yarns. I was hoping to find a lot of projects that would give me creative ideas on how to combine my various scraps into one piece without making it look like a scrap project but only a few projects delivered. I must say however, that the projects in this book are endless (over 80!) so you will most certainly find enough interesting projects to get your money's worth. It is also noteworthy to mention that nearly every chapter features a pattern that requires you to know how to use an afghan hook or a double ended crochet hook. Because there is so much variety, I thought it would be helpful to take you through chapter by chapter:
KITCHEN: There are some really cute projects in here but as far as I'm concerned, kitchen projects are basically scrap projects to begin with, so if you already have many patterns for these things, this will only add more of the same thing to your collection. I found it odd too that they would include place settings because though you may have enough scraps to make one setting, you most certainly will not have enough to make 3 more matching ones!
RUGS: There is a nice pet bed project in here that does a great job of making a scrap project not look like one at all. The remainder of the projects are strictly rugs. Some are cute and country-like, some more elegant and a few scream of tackiness.
FASHIONS: There are fashions for everyone but the baby in this chapter and I must admit the patterns, though not the most fashion forward (with some exceptions) aren't all that bad. The one pattern that most impressed me in this book can be found in this chapter. It is a ladies sweater pattern that combines only 4 ounces each of 10 different yarn shades and 8 oz of the main color yet the colors are all creatively blended so you would never guess that the finished product was made of scraps. This is exactly the type of project that I would have like to have seen more of. It is also noteworthy to mention that nearly every ladies pattern is suitable for the plus sizes as the bust measurements on the biggest sizes range from 51-53 1/2 inches. The downside though is that not all measurements are given and there are no diagrams.
THREAD PROJECTS: There's nothing all that new in here except for some frameable threadwork. I am not particularily fond of doilies and runners using up multitudes of colors so this chapter didn't do all that much to impress me. Patterns call for various colors mixed with one main color, there are bookmarks and hair accessories which are scrap projects to begin with. I would have hoped to have seen more thread projects where color would be more of an asset, like some cute hat wall hangings, toilet tissue covers, etc. It would even have been nice to see some projects using multiple strands of thread.
BAZAAR QUICKIES: This chapter is a gem: I fell in love with the tomato pincusion; the fishbowl placemat makes me want to buy the fishbowl, and all of the Christmas ornaments are stellar!
PLAYTIME FRIENDS: Another winning chapter filled with beautiful playtime projects such as various stuffed animals, finger puppets, a checkerboard rug, bunny bath mitt, gardening doll outfit, etc.
AFGHANS: As far as afghans go, there are many lovely ones in here and I must say that I breathed a great big sigh of relief to see that even though some used granny squares not one of them screamed of the old fashioned "GRANNY". Many of the patterns were what I had expected, using up your scraps with a lot of one main color but I must caution that not all the afghans were of scrap basket value. One of the most lovely afghan patterns calls for no less than 20 oz of each the four colors used.

Don't be put off by the Reader's Digest title!.......2007-09-07
Modern crocheters need not shy away from this title simply because it was published by the not-so-hip Reader's Digest. This book contains many really cute designs, especially for kids. I just made the cover sweater for my son and it turned out beautifully (not at all chunky and awkward like so many crocheted sweaters). The patterns are concise and very easy to follow. Reader's Digest does indeed know their stuff and the crochet basics chapter is also very good. Yes, there are a few examples of the exhausted poncho and granny square here, and you may need to tweak your yarn choices a bit on some of the patterns, but overall this book has more "keepers" than most of the new crochet books that have been published recently. Give it a try.

Big and beautiful.......2007-03-22
This is one of the best afghan books i have seen. The designs in this book are georgeous and include granny squares, ripples, mile-a minute, filet, 3d florals and even one for double ended hooks.
There are a couple of patterns suitable for baby and children's throws, including a cute kitten stitch.
Each pattern has a lovely coloured photograph, easy to follow instructions and charts where necessary. A small basic stich guide and filet review is included in the back.
The book has 47 patterns in total.

Customer Reviews:
Don't buy 120 things you do naturally & 5 minor things you don't.......2006-08-12
What a waste of trees to make this book. 120 things you do naturally & 5 minor, unimportant things you don't. DON'T BELIEVE THE REVIEWS WITH MORE THAN ONE STAR. ALL THE POSITIVE REVIEWS WRITTEN BEFORE MINE except one have only reviewed books by this author, all that they give high grades for, most likely FRIENDS OF THE AUTHOR. If there are other reviews by them check the date, it will be after my posting. I checked their reviews because I couldn't believe anyone would give this book 5 stars. Some "games" listed are and I am quoting "Let's Watch" this is where the baby just watches whatever is happening around her. "Diaper Song" sing to your baby as you change its diaper, the pages brain research section states "singing to babies facilitates genuine bonding between adult and child". There are about a dozen different games of peek-a-boo offered. You can play it with a loud voice or try singing peek-a-boo. For a real change of pace you can put a puppet on your hand to hide for peek-a-boo or any number of ways you already play peek-a-boo. Only buy this book if you're looking for clutter for your bookcase.
Useful book of neat baby games.......2003-08-01
I have 125 Brain Games for Babies and love it. It has many little games that I knew but had forgotten about; but it has many more that I never would have come up with. It does a good job of simply explaining the specifics of brain development and itýs importance in the first months of a childýs life. This is a good, handy basic book for a new parent.
Easy, structured play with your baby.......2003-02-03
I thought this book was a nice way to do simple activities that stimulated various senses with my baby. I also worked part-time and I gave it to my nanny when I was away to give her ideas of things to do, which she really enjoyed. I liked the specific reasearch linked with each activity to help me understand why a particular activity was helpful. While some of the activities were things I was doing, many were new and I just liked having an easy reference to grab when I wanted to do something I might not have thought about. I also think it's a nice gift for a new Mom.
Great for first time parents.......2001-05-23
This is a nice little book for first time parents who aren't always so sure how to 'intelligently' entertain the new little person in their lives. Everybody wants their child to become the smartest and best they can be but find it sometimes difficult to figure out how exactly to promote that in the first few months. This book gives some nice and simple ideas that anyone can follow to hopefully get a few extra smiles out of their babies.
Overpriced, but pretty good.......2001-04-17
Considering the content of this book, it is really not worth the fifteen dollars listed on the cover. It consists of games and activities that are basically traditional; the sorts of things that most mothers do with their babies. Five to ten dollars at most would have been a much more reasonable price.
However, it is not a bad book at all. Contrary to what the previous reviewers said, parents will not automatically know all of these games. Granted, I would definitely have done some of the things mentioned in the book with my child anyway (for example, holding the baby and making faces), but many of the other games may expand the parent's "bag of tricks" or inspire new ideas in them, and there's nothing wrong with that!
The best thing about the book is that it emphasizes the importance of human affection and interaction in promoting brain development, rather than expensive toys or gadgets. So go ahead and purchase it if you find it on sale, or take it out of the library. Just getting a few good games or tips will make it worth your time.
