A must for the Beginner Tapestry Weaver.......2007-04-05
A very comprehensive and detailed guide, gives detailed drawings and clear explanation, to explain each element of tapestry weaving. With samples of each element, for the weaver to try, this study guide is a must for the beginning tapestry weaver.
New to Tapestry.......2007-03-27
I felt this was a very comprehensive guide to the "want to be". It answered many questions I had before I decided to begin.
Great Book!.......2007-03-16
Beautiful book and so filled with info. I want to use it with my Navajo loom.
Truly Comprehensive!.......2003-10-24
I have read most of the tapestry-weaving books in print or in my local university library and this is the one I turn to when I have a question. Nancy Harvey does a fantastic job of teaching the art and method of tapestry weaving from construction of a basic frame loom, to cartoon design, to finishing techniques. The book has good B&W illustrations and photos of the lessons, although larger photos would have been helpful-more like the wonderful color close-ups in Kristen Glassbrook's tapestry book. There are several teaching designs included in the book that are a pleasure to weave. Harvey's lesson on how to weave a circle is priceless as I have not seen that technique so well covered in any other book. The color photos included in the gallery illustrate a wide variety of weaving styles and are inspiring. I would especially recommend this book for intermediate weavers who are ready to progress beyond the lessons in Kristen Glassbrook's excellent book.

novice having fun!.......2007-04-15
I bought a Mirrix loom to use for bead weaving, but wanted to try my hand at tapestry as well. The beading went great, tapestry was a disaster. I looked at many books on weaving, but this one got me there. It's definitely for beginners and is written with that in mind. The color pictures and text are wonderful, showing and explaining each step in clear detail. I've come to learn enough about the basic techniques and terms that I'm actually starting to do some experimenting. The author truly understood what it is like to want to learn this art when you know nothing about it other than it somehow involves string and yarn. I would highly recommend this book for people wanting to try tapestry weaving and for those who may want to teach it to children.
almost there.......2006-08-10
Trying to learn tapestry weaving on one's own (never having done any weaving before) is nigh impossible. But of all the books I've used, this is the most thorough, easiest to follow, and has the clearest step-by-step illustrations. That's not to say it's perfect; like all the others, it uses undefined terms here & there.
A visual feast.......2003-10-24
K. Glassbrook's small book on Tapestry weaving is a visual feast illustrating all the most useful techniques in wonderfully detailed photos. I would recommend this as an introductory book for aspiring weavers as everything about the text is crystal clear. I believe this book could even be used to teach children how to weave. It does not have all the technical detail of Nancy Harvey's book but it is an inspiring place for a beginner to start. Like Harvey she succeeds in making tapestry weaving accessible to everyone as she includes instructions for making a basic frame loom. Her teaching sampler is very attractive and fun to weave. My favorite part is the gallery of Ms. Glassbrook's tapestries including detail photographs. Her use of color is amazing and much more contemporary than what I've seen in other tapestry books.
Product Description
No brocades are more lovely or lifelike than the ones the widow weaves to sell at the marketplace. But so fine it is that the fairies of the palace send a wind to carry it off for themselves. Knowling his mother will die without her beloved creation, the widows son starts out after it. But the way to the fairy palace lies over Fiery Mountain and across the Icy Sea. Even if he gets there, will the fairies give up the brocade? This popular Chinese folktale will enchant young and old as the widow and her son find their way to a happiness beyond their dreams.
Book Description
David Jongeward brings to life the artistic journey of master weaver Carolyn Jongeward, beginning with her apprenticeship to Navajo weavers in Arizona and extending to her studies in sacred geometry and number symbolism, Native American philosophy, Jungian psychology, and creation mythology.
From her Navajo teachers, Carolyn learned the meaning of "sitting-still-within-the-harmony-place" while pursuing her craft and artistic vision. The dreams that came to her--many recorded here from her hournals--inspired her designs and weavings in precise geometric and symbolic detail. Together with David Jongeward's evocative text, the reproductions of Carolyn's weavings--many in full color--reveal her art to be the focus of vast creative energy and a multi-faceted search for knowledge.

Thought process behind the art.......2005-05-12
I was surprised that I enjoyed this book. After the first few lines I though Uh-oh... Jungian dream analysis and fake native mysticism... this is going to be so pretentious I won't be able to stomach it. But, I kept reading - and reading - and reading. This is no simple biography. Nor is it mere navel gazing from an overindulged artist. It is most of all a love story between a man and a woman, woman and creation and the creator for the created. It was enormously interesting to watch the growth of an artist from first fumblings with technique and culture to a mastery of both the art form and the marriage between myth and creation (both art and ourselves). Somewhere along the way the craft of weaving became the art of creation and we are the lucky few who get to witness the process.
I learned about myth, culture, mathematics, art, discipline, color and form. I suspect I will never be able to create anything again without at least once mentally refering back to this book - even though weaving is not my chosen medium. The design process through reflection after completion is shown so clearly that It will influence me for a very long time.
This is the chronicle of a weaver's life in tapestry........1999-03-08
Weaver of Worlds, by David Jongeward, is the account of his wife Carolyn's progression as a tapestry weaver. He chronicles their first encounters with Navajo weavers and medicine men, combs and battens, anxiety and elation.Since David and Carolyn both kept journals, the book contains exerpts from these which provide insight into Carolyn's"world behind the loom." The Navajo priciples of beauty and harmony resonate in the full-color pictures of her tapestries. As she wove, they both read many books on ancient civilizations, art, philosophy, etc. These books were the basis for dreams which inspired more weaving, as well as discussions with each other and friends like Frank Waters(Book of the Hopi). From her first clumsy attempts to her mastery over warp and weft, this book is her journey and can serve as a roadmap for others wishing to learn to weave.A bibliography lists the books which stimulated her craft and personal growth
Book Description
A vivid rendering of the educational, social, and physical environment of two elementary schools in contrasting socioeconomic settings, this book calls attention to the importance of place in human lives and learning. The author draws from systematic observations conducted over a three-year period, presenting the schools and the persons who inhabit them via a fictionalized narrative. This treatment allows readers to understand how the material conditions of poverty and wealth inform children's worldview without compromising the identity of the study participants. Written by an eminent African-American professor of architecture and urban planning who is an outspoken advocate for social justice, this book is a rare gem.

For Creative Moms.......2001-05-10
I am already a person who "weaves the dream," so I got more out of this book in encouragement for not letting the day to day challenges of choosing to stay at home with my young son overwhelm my own need for creative reflection. I think DREAM WEAVING could be a terrific resource book for other women struggling to meet the demands of family and a creative soul. Susan Laubmeier
Straight to the Heart of Life.......2001-04-27
The wonderful insights in this book go straight to the heart of life. Emily L. VanLaeys presents an engaging story of her personal and spiritual development, set against the backdrop of compelling dreams. If ever you wondered about the importance of dreams, Emily's book provides dramatic testimony to how God speaks to us every night, and how our dreams help us to stay on course to fulfill our highest expression and good. - Rosemary Ellen Guiley, author of DREAMWORK FOR THE SOUL and DREAMSPEAK: HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE MESSAGES IN YOUR DREAMS
A book worth dreaming about!.......2001-04-20

Review by a non-dreamy person.......2001-04-17
As far as quality of writing, this book is simple and easy to read. The writing is clear and descriptive. The stories about the author's life are vibrant and real. They bring a richness to the book and help the reader relate to what is going on with their own life. As far as dreams go, the interrpretations are very authentic and the author truly knows her stuff. Although the jacket cover may not catch your eye, the inside of the book is what counts and I think if you are a spritual seeking type of person you will enjoy this book!
Book Description
It’s been over a decade since Ariel Gore, in a caffeine-induced brainstorm, invented Hip Mama as her senior project in college. The zine that has grown up alongside Gore’s daughter, has covered subjects from weaning to home schooling with a political edge and a puckish sense of humor. The Essential Hip Mama captures the heart of a decade’s worth of earthy, honest, soulful parenting—and topics from circumcision to dating, abortion to the (mistaken) belief that “mothers don’t fart.” Gore has gathered in one volume the whispers and conversations heard in homes, on playgrounds, and in coffeehouses around the country. Reassuring and hopeful, The Essential Hip Mama is a brilliant testament that one becomes an “expert” simply through the act of mothering, echoing Gore’s own words, “Whenever I’ve needed parenting advice, I’ve put out a call for submissions.” This paperback original offers the most hilarious and heart-wrenching essays from ten years of this quintessential alternative-parenting bible.

Useful.......2007-08-18
To start: I admit it, I bought this book in an attempt to accelerate a break-up with one of the nuttier mistresses I've had in my unfortunate life. Some nitwits just can't seem to take a hint (and I am a master hinter). In any case, Bessie (my jumbo jet of a wife) had all but videotape evidence of my latest fling (I cannot help myself) and was threatening poor Hops with "serious legal action". So...enter this helpful book by a skillful artiste with a mermaidish globalwarmingfearing name.
A simple addition of "Un" prior to Essential and a carefully scripted note: "I've had enough you fat psycho cow" seemed to do the trick. At least until the following Wednesday when I found my wife's terror cat (Al-Bobo) stewing in a vat of chicken soup outside from my front porch along with a barely legible note ("Hops: I will destroy what you hate for your love"). I'll admit, it's an approach that could work on a weaker man (or one with a less vigilant and violent baboon for a spouse). I should mention that I did peruse the book prior to scrawling those two effete letters on the cover and found it to be mostly silly and trippy nonsense that made me want to go back in time and stop my parents from "cuddling" on Grandma's back porch during the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.
