Book Description
Bowl turning is becoming increasingly popular as a hobby and a way to reconnect with a traditional craft. Ernie Conover is a master turner who has turned his experience teaching this activity to hundreds of people into a practical, easy-to-read guide. This book provides basic instructions to get aspiring turners directly to their goal of creating a pleasing bowl. Along the way, he shows how to: gather and buy wood for turning; apply basic and advanced turning techniques; sand and finish; use the faceplate and chucks to hold the work; choose, sharpen, and handle tools; and create the most attractive bowl shapes. The author's straightforward, encouraging style and extensive photos and illustrations make the process easy and rewarding.

Taught me a lot of things.......2004-03-23
I am wanting to get into wood turning and while at the used bookstore last week I found and bought a copy of this book. After spending the weekend looking over it, my buying a lathe and making woodchips is quickly approaching.
About the only thing I really knew about turning wood was what I saw Norm do on TNYW and from reading a few magazine articles. That ain't a lot of information. Mr. Conover does a fantastic job at presenting all the main aspects for making a bowl and even I, a lowly guy who has not even bought a lathe yet, feel like I can do this stuff and do a decent job of it.
This is a terrific book and the information in it is going to be put to very good use.
With Celebrity status comes the expectation of greatness.......2002-07-06
Ernie Conover is a well known figure in the world of woodworking. It is a good book, but I was disappointed in the quality of the material that he chose to use as his examples. Wood with bark running through it, or discolored can be exceptional, but these pieces are simply diseased wood that is not attractive. To sign pieces that are less than stellar is a head knocker. Their are other books where the author has chosen to use some exceptional woods, that nature has invaded, and left a mark of beauty. Bowls with exotic colors running through them, and a natural bark edge, but these are not examples of that.
It is just my opinion, because I know that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so I should be open minded.
The plus side of the book is that it shares with you some wood turning techniques that are exceptional. A lot can be learned here, so I do overall highly recommend the book. I just have a hard time getting past the attractiveness of the examples used.
Turn a Bowl with Ernie Conover: Getting Terrific Results.......2000-02-15
FINALLY! A BOOK THAT REALLY EXPLAINS BOWL TURNING
For anyone seeking puidance on bowl turning, this is the book for you. The problem for most wookworkers is that we work along. We need the advantage of a master craftsman and good teacher to set us on the right path. In that respect, this book is a treasure. It will start anyone off soundly, so that they wil be able to take advantage of the excitement that comes from creating something of value out of a piece of wood. The color photographs are clear, sharp and upclose guides that go along with a well written text so that even a beginner can get it right the first time.

Great ideas for the Med........2005-09-18
Gildermeister goes into detail on several subjects when doing gardening in Mediterranean climates. This book is a great complementary book to her book "Mediterranean Gardening" because it expands on some of the ideas she fist presents in that book but, "Gardening the Mediterranean Way" stands well alone because it looks at specific gardening situation in such a way that the reader will not find it lacking. This is a delightful book that gives both novice and expereinced gardener a better understanting of med. gardening. The book has wonderful illustrations, photos and great ideas that, in her own words, makes one's garden a 'personal Eden'.
As beautiful to page through as it is user-friendly.......2004-10-12

Featuring environmentally sound techniques that take the effects of the seasons into full account, gorgeous color photography, extensive recommendations of plants that are hardy, versatile, and labor-saving, exhaustively detailed instructions for gardeners of all experience levels from novice to expert, and much more, Gardening The Mediterranean Way is a solid instructional, as beautiful to page through as it is user-friendly. Highly recommended.
Customer Reviews:
I greatly enjoyed this book.......2005-01-16
In arid west, water is a scarce resource that has been taken for granted. This book provides many good ideas on how to have beautiful yard while using less water. One of the best parts of the book is the summary on different plants and their water requirements. Many in the west don't realize how much beauty they can bring into their landscapes by adding xeric natives such as penstemons, agastaches and the like.
One of the best guides to xeriscape plants to experiment with, I recommend this book to all western gardeners who would like to use less water and provide more cover and nectar for wildlife.
Gardening WITH Nature (instead of against her).......2000-03-15
This book was written for those of us who live in the arid west, love to garden and desire an attractive landscape, but who are faced with an uncertain water supply. As water resources are becoming more expensive, and in some cases rationed, we all need to consider how to garden appropriately for the climate zone in which we live. This book begins with the rationale for water-wise gardening, takes the reader through an easy to understand planning and design phase, and finishes up with excellent photographs and plant descriptions. Xeriscaping is definitely the wave of the future, no matter where you live!
Book Description
Gardening in harmony with a Mediterranean climate means taking advantage of winter rain and allowing the garden to rest over hot summers. In this beautifully illustrated, practical handbook, Heidi Gildemeister provides both novice and experienced gardeners with a comprehensive guide for waterwise gardening, with over one thousand drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants chosen both for their beauty and for their easygoing ways. Well indexed with common and botanical names, Mediterranean Gardening will be indispensable not only for gardeners in California, the Mediterranean basin, and Mediterranean climate areas in South America, Australia, and Africa, but for anyone living in a region that experiences drought.
Gildemeister explains how drought-tolerant plants that are suitably matched with a site and carefully planted and mulched can live on winter rain and, once established, do not need additional summer water--as in nature. The Plant Selection lists over one thousand plants from nearly five hundred genera, including their preferred growing conditions, propagation, best use, and maintenance. Guidelines in eight steps describe the planning of waterwise gardens, such as for the establishment of dappled shade to conserve precious soil moisture. Successful alternatives to the water-intensive lawn offer attractive design ideas.
Mediterranean Gardening offers a wealth of information: "easy" plants for the beginner, new choices for the garden architect, and for botanists the latest findings on minimum temperatures plants can endure. An extensive bibliography covering drought tolerance and a list of useful addresses make this book as helpful to people converting to water-, labor-, and ecology-conscious gardening as to those starting from scratch.
Customer Reviews:
environmentally aware, gardener.......2005-09-18
Gildermeister primary concern, and rightly so, is the climate and environment of the mediterranean zone for panting and gardening. Water and heat, wind and salt are factors which until now, have not really been taken into account. Gildermeister does take them into account. Her book examies the unique concerns of the med and has an comprehensive and extensive seltection of plants well suited for such conditions. This book is well suite for both beginner and experts alike.
Lots of usefull knowledge.......2005-08-10
This book gives prefect information on how to grow a garden in a dry climat without going bankrupt on water cost. Invaluable, specially for beginners. Comming from a cold and wet climate I had no idea what to think about when growing a garden in a hot and dry climate, but this book deffinately put me on the right track.
The book also contains a long list of plants that will do well in a "dry" garden which is helpfull. The only thing I missed was information on how big the plants become and at what rate they grow. Rather interesting information for a newcommer like me who is not always familiar with the plants described. Many good pictures did help to choose the right types of plants though.
A gardeners opinion.......2005-07-19
I live in the South of France and use this book myself. I sent a copy to my daughter in California so that she might benefit from the the expertise and experience of Hilda Gildemeister. This is a good, reliable basic introduction to gardening in a Med. climate.Easy to read, good plant suggestions, the lists of plants for particular situations is of great use. Especially useful for newcomers to dry condition gardening.
Water wise gardening.......2005-06-28
Wonderful book! Explains the unique characteristics of water-wise plants covered. Includes many plants and photographs as well as descriptions of best growing conditions. I especially liked the section that groups plants by special characteristics-pool-side, for the novice, scented, etc.

Gardening in the great S'west.......2005-07-27
Waterwise and otherwise, this is a wise resource for sane gardening in our region. A great resource that I return to.
Good fire resistance advice.......2003-10-29
There is a good section on planting a fire-resistant landscape.
The book is geared to the Rocky Mountain area, but there is some information pertinent to Southern California (another planet, as far as most gardening books are concerned). I also found the 'plant substitution' guide to be very useful.
Waterwise landscaping.......2001-08-22
I received this book from a colleague of mine, and I had no clue what `xeriscape' even was. Living here, southwest, I knew I had to do something, and this book was the opened the door! I have just begun, but I am already confident and happy. As the review said, it the plant notes were wonderful, and the color photos were beyond that. The tips help. Looking at this, you would think it'd be terribly hard to do waterwise landscaping, I sure did, but give it a try! It's a terrific book, or at least it served me great.

Best in the West.......2007-06-13
Ms Springer's experience-rich treatise on gorgeous gardens in areas of little summer rain. Pictured are her "Hell Strips," those spots between the sidewalk and street the owner must maintain, which would translate well to any semi-dry area. She touts "Buchoe," buffalo grass that needs little water, greens earlier in spring and lasts later in Autumn, and requires next-to-no mowing. Gardening for those us with lives, an eye for beauty, love of productive gardening. From someone who practices what she preaches.

Thriving, Waterwise Gardens in the Southwest & West.......2006-12-14
Excellent instructive book on planning, creating and caring for beautiful, thriving gardens in the semi-arid and arid Southwest and West. Everything one needs to know for successful gardening while conserving water. If you have never gardened where annual rainfall is 20" or less and water reserves are being depleted due to increased population, agricultural and other uses, this book will give you all the information you need to continue to have that "New England" cottage look that so many of us aspire to achieve. Low water use plants are not all cactus and yucca. Learning the xeric plant palette and how to properly care for those plants can result in gardens as beautiful as those in the gardening magazines from high rainfall areas. This book tells one how to achieve that. It further discusses pests, pruning, dividing and a myriad of other gardening topics. If you know little about gardening in highly alkaline soil with high sun intensity and little moisture, this is a necessary read. Easy to read and understand with no complex or technical jargon, it will additionally serve as a quick reference. A book to be used in and out of the garden.

Customer Reviews:
Rageful kids, mean rageful adults.......2006-08-07
This is another book that covers the general symptoms of rageful kids in an easy to read format. It covers the basic needs of these hateful kids and how to get them where they need to be. I like that the author has been where you are.
It is not too much different than his other book about raising impossible children. Either one is good to give to others to help them understand... because those others frequently are the ones helping you but unwittingly are also making your life more miserable.
Acountability seemed to me to be the main message of the book.Learn to be real and you will get what you want . Continue to be fake and angry and you end up with nothing. If only all the care givers could follow the same pathway.
A Common Sense Professional.......2001-10-30
Common sense writing and approach by a professional with a lot of direct experience- in the uncommon (too most people), all-too-common world of troubled children. I have worked many years with such children, and find Dr. Ziegler's outlook is caring, effective, and realistic, with an essential touch of humor. He writes clearly for both therapists and parents/ foster parents (and anyone else). I'm buying extra copies to circulate around.
