The BEST book on the market for new Westie owners!.......1999-11-20
First time and old time owners alike will love this book. It gives a wonderful overview of the West Highland White Terrier. It includes good puppy selection and training tips as well as breed health care, grooming, and temperment information. We particularly like her coverage of the breed's versatile involvement in canine activities such as agility and tracking. It is also a good book for people who are trying to decide if a Westie is right for them. We recommend Ms. Martin's book to everyone who obtains a Westie from us.

Kids Love This One.......2006-11-05
I frequently buy books for my granddaughters, ages two and four, and the McDuff books are real favorites of theirs. The illustrations are wonderful in all the McDuff books. These books are always picked by the girls for me to read. They love them.
McDuff is not a Yorkshire.......2006-02-15
I just wanted to point out that the synopsis of this book says that McDuff is a Yorkshire. He is clearly a West Highland White Terrier ("Westie"). Whatever you call him, though, McDuff's stories are wonderful.

Customer Reviews:
You have got to be kidding me........2006-06-29
Maybe the other reviews were written by people with dogs rather than children, but here is the moral of this story for older siblings who resent a new baby: "Quit eating, and everything will go back to the way it was before the baby was born."
I suppose it's good if you want to raise passive-aggressive children.
McDuff is so cute!.......2006-02-15
These little books are such a joy. The illustrations are so cute, and the stories a endearing. I love reading these to my little guys!
McDuff a Family Favorite.......2000-06-21
My one-year-old daughter loves McDuff. The illustrations are what really make this book stand out. They convey a sense of humor that even adults can enjoy - we love when McDuff gives the baby squinty looks! We read every night but McDuff and the Baby is the only book that she will sit all the way through - smiling at every page. We look forward to more McDuff books!
A perfect little book, about a perfect little dog!.......2000-03-22
I loved this book! I bought it for my niece because I have aWestie. The illustrations compliment the story extremely well. Youcan really tell that the writer and illustrator both own Westies! I recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs, especially little McDuffs.
Nicole, Anthony B., Megan, and Tilly LOVED this book!.......2000-01-13
We have been reading a lot of books by Rosemary Wells and McDUFF AND THE BABY is our favorite book. Nicole liked the part when McDuff met the baby because it made her feel happy. Anthony B. liked the part when McDuff growled at the baby and the baby was scared. Megan liked the part when McDuff said WOOF at the baby and the baby WOOFED back. She was happy that McDuff had someone to play with. Tilly's favorite part was when McDuff squinted his eyes at the baby and the baby laughed.

What happened to the illustrations?.......2005-11-22
The five stars are for the book, not the illustrations in this current edition. I love all the McDuff books. I used to have a Westie and so they really captured my attention. I started buying them before my granddaughter was born and started reading them to her very early in her life. She absolutely loves them and asks me to read them to her over and over again. However, I am disappointed in the illustrations in the latest editions of the books (like this one). They are not the same as in the earlier editions yet the illustrator is the same. Why is that? The earlier editions had wonderful illustrations that looked exactly like the Westies, but the newer editions are different. They look very cartoonish. Please bring back the "old look" and please ask Rosemary Wells to write more books to be illustrated as they used to be. Thanks.
If McDuff can learn to understand French, then maybe your young reader can too.......2005-08-18
For some reason I am having problems finding a list that puts the McDuff books in order. I know that "McDuff Moves In" was the first book in the series, written by Rosemary Wells and illustrated by Susan Jeffers. I thougth that "McDuff Goes to School" might be the second book in the series because once Fred and Lucy (not Ricky and Ethel) let this cute little white-haired dog into their lives I figured that sending him to obedience school was the logical next step. But "McDuff Goes to School" was published in 2001 and that puts it after "McDuff Comes Home," "McDuff and the Baby," and "McDuff's New Friend." That involved a bit of on-line research, but the fact that there was a baby in the house was a big clue that this adventure took place after "McDuff and the Baby" at least. Where "McDuff Saves teh Day" and "McDuff's Wild Romp" fit into the chronology is not yet clear to me, but I will work on it.
"McDuff Goes to School" tells what happens when a new family, the De Gaulles, moves from Barkedelphia into the house next door to McDuff at number nine Elm Road. McDuff discovers a new dog, a black Scottish Terrier named Marie-Antoinette has moved in as well, and Lucy and Fred learn that Celeste and Pierre de Gaulle speak French. So when Lucy says, "Hello," Celeste responds with "Bonjour." Inside the De Gaulle's new home when Marie sits on the sofa Celeste orders her to jump down, lay down, and stay, but she does it all in French. When Lucy and Fred discover that McDuff does not obey command (in English; they do not try French), they decide he has to go to obedience school. Celeste and Marie decide to go to the school too.
What is interesting is that because Lucy is too busy with the baby and Fred is too tired from working all day, that neither of them has time to practice with McDuff. So it is Celeste who practices every day with Marie, learning how to heel, sit, stay, and come. On the other side of the fence McDuff is watching the lessons and when he starts obeying the commands, given in French, he gets a liver truffle, just like Marie. Meanwhile, Lucy and Fred are aware that McDuff is not doing well in school and when graduation day comes he does not obey their commands.
I really like this illustrated children's story for two reasons. The first is that young readers will see where the story is going and anticipate the ending, which is a good thing because they will be happy they were smart enough to figure it out. The second is that Celeste speaks French throughout the book and although there is a Glossary in the back that explains that "assieds-toi" means "sit" and "viens" means "come," there are no direct translations in the main story. However, the meaning of each phrase is clear from what is being said so that kids can make the connections. Beyond that, you have the benefit that if young readers, ages 2-5, can learn the French commands to give a dog to heel, jump and lie down, then they might be interested in learning other foreign words and phrases, whether they are French or something else. The earlier you get kids interested in speaking a foreign language the easier it is for them to pick it up. It is too late for me to do so, but hopefully you can get this book to your beginning reader when it can help them on that particular path.
Great if you speak French - disappointment otherwise.......2005-02-26
We have three of the books in this series and love them, but were very disappointed with this book. Yes the illustration are beautiful as with the other books, but about half the text is in French. I'm sure that's great if you speak French but its miserable for those of us who don't. German or Italian would have been fine but I couldn't even stumble through the French and the story was mostly lost as a result.
Perfection.......2002-02-27
I have all the previous books in this series and would recommend them to everyone. I also have both scotties and westies, and Wells and Jeffers capture the spirit, expressions and body language of these dogs perfectly. The stories are very cute and have been very popular with the children I have tested them on. McDuff is an adorable character and I hope to have new volumes soon!
Scottie & Westie Tales.......2001-10-21
Being the owner of a Scottie, a Westie and a Cairn as well as an avid art collector of breed-related items, I am so impressed with the capturing of the expressions of the Scottie (Marie) and the Westie (McDuff) in this book. The artist really knows the breeds and the author as well. They both capture the wonderful spirit and essence of the beloved dogs. A great story that children of all ages will love - even this 39 year old kid. Bravo!

Customer Reviews:
Essential for your West Highland White Terrier Library.......2007-03-10
Ms. Gentry's book follows in the tradition of John T. Marvin's seminal work "The Complete West Highland White Terrier". Most readible is the coverage of breed history and those in the US who have made significant contributions to the development of this most congenial terrier breed. This volume is not an exploitive, commercial piece for breed newcomers, but rather it provides solid information for all those with serious breed interest.
Excellent Grooming Tips.......2000-10-28
This book is an excellent reference in all areas of owning a Westie.....superb tips on grooming, showing and just all around enjoyment of your West Highland White Terrier. Ms. Gentry definetly knows this breed. A must have for every westie enthusiast!!
Gentry's Westie Book.......2000-04-09
The only issue I have with this book was that it was focused only on American breeders. And it even missed one of the major American breeders in it's little bios. But the chapters on GROOMING are invaluable to any novice Westie owner and breeder. If you just gotten your first Westie you'll learn more about grooming here than any breeder will share with you. So get the book.
Una excelente investigación, muy buen libro........1999-04-15
Si quieres saber todo sobre el origen, desarrollo de la raza, manejo y cuidados de tu Westie, no dudes en comprar este libro. además está muy actualizado.
A good, detailed book, primarily concentrating on the US........1998-08-10
This is a welcome addition to the library of Westie books. Positive features are the depth of detail of prominent Westies and the history of the breed, some snippets of which I had never read before (reflecting the author's background as an historian). Be warned: no colour piccies, so not as visually stunning as Nicholas' book. Given the detail of the Westie's US achievements, it is quite incredible that there is no mention whatever of the greatest Westie of them all winning BIS at the undisputed greatest show: the incomparable Moonpilot winning at Crufts. In this sense, the title is a little misleading: this is a book primarily for US afficianados.

Love this stuff.......2007-09-29
I had always wanted to try chain maille but didn't know where to start. This book gave me all the information I needed. The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow. My first project was the bracelet on page 78, took me about 8 hours all together. We went to Ren Faire and got several compliments on it. It is a lot easier than it looks, just time consuming. I can't wait to get into more involved projects. Plan to do the braided bracelet on page 99 next and more Ren related items.
Chain Mail Jewelrey.......2007-08-05
Just receiving this book excited me for days. The basics of the craft, projects, diagrams and pictures of the finished items were all excellent. A list of suppliers would be helpful as unusual rings were used.
Wonderful Chain Mail.......2007-08-02
Have nearly finished the very first chain mail bracelet I have ever attempted, admittededly it is a beginners bracelet, but I have found the instructions exceptionally clear and easy to read, and the end result
I think will be very satisfying. Will be attempting a few more projects
in the book. The Byzantine Parure set for instance and the wonderful
plaited bracelet and also the really beautiful lariat necklace.
If you are at all interested in chain mail then this is the book for you
and is without doubt the best book available right now for this type
of jewellery. I wish I could find more books with these exceptional
type of projects in it....
GREAT BOOK!!!.......2007-06-13
very specific and very GOOD investment, glad I bought it! Highly recommend to buy!

a confused an confusing guide.......2002-05-22
This book doesn't know what it wants to be. I found it not helpful and even daunting--something a gardening book should never be! Even the list of plants to plant is incomplete and hard to use.
There are other wonderful books out there. This one is for people who want to make a real architectural change to their patios . . .not gardens.
An Excellent overall Guide!.......2001-07-02
Nothing gives me a greater challenge, or more joy than container gardening. As a city girl, having the ability to create both flower and vegetable gardens in limited space is a blessing. HOW to go about the planning, choice of plant material, and care of a container garden or raised bed left me with many unanswered questions. This book answered all of them.
The first thing that the authors do is to challenge your thinking about just what consitutes a garden. Increasingly, people who live in apartments or townhouses with small areas have been able to transform their surroundings with the use of planters and containers & householders who have patios can add an instant garden simply by building raised beds. Those who do have the space to plant anything that they want can ALSO opt for a container garden because of the CONTROL that it offers. Living in N.Y.C., I have seen fire escapes, patios, roof gardens & porches transformed into beautiful, colorful, inviting spaces by using these methods. As someone who prizes fresh fruits and vegetables, containers have been my method of gardening. The authors give you options too: you can have a container garden that you can move from one area to another or permanent planters that are built to fit a house's architecture. This book gives you excellent samples of the various materials available for this purpose, and how to preserve and finish them.
The rest of the book shows you the various types of pots and planters which are available, and samples of various raised beds. The color photos are quite good and give you many excellent plant combinations. My favorite was on page 47, which showed a stunning example of Conifers, Japanese Maples, blubs, Annuals, and Perennials. Again, the Crandall's prove that the only limits are those that you put on your own imagination.
The last section deals with soil mixes & fertilizers and superbly handles the organic vs. chemical fertilizer debate. Maintaining your garden is well addressed with a chapter on pests and how to eliminate them. I was impressed with the straightforward manner in which the authors present all of this material. Reading this book was truly enjoyable, and will make anyone a gardener!

This book was so very helpful, full of great fact and advice!
Highly reccomended!
Too technical for the average gardener........2000-03-31
Very informative book but is not for everyone. Although it contains colorful pictures, it is not a "dream about spring" book. Most of the pictures are close-ups of structures details, irrigation, maitenance, soils, bugs, etc and the narrative is very technical. The authors' introduction speaking of "townhouses in tiny lots...apartment, condo, and co-op dwellers" is misleading, the book is definitely not guided towards apartment buildings or tiny spaces.

Successful Strategiesk for Working with Difficult Kids.......2000-04-11
This is a 5 Star book. Until I read this book I throught that I was the only one that believed in holding kids accountable for their actions. The same strategies outlined in this book worked for me the 22 years I spent in the Marine Corps. I can't begin to count the times that I've had young people come back an tell me that the strategies I used in working with them was just what they needed, it makes them think before they act. If you use the strategies outlined in this book, you will not go wrong. And the best part is that the kids will come back and thank you later for helping turn their lives around.
Thank You Again, Joyce for putting it into simple, easy to use strategies, as well as common sense.
Semper Fi!
Sound and to the point.......1998-11-20
A seal on the cover of this book advertises, "Parents or Professionals: Step by Step Help for the Discipline Resistant Child." A fairly good description of the contents. The book was written by a therapist with experience in residential treatment programs. Its language and presentation make it accessible to the "lay person," though I think the book is more geared for professionals. The emphasis is on strategies for handling youngsters who are angry and defiant, though there is also information on self-care as a part of coping. There is also a short section on ADHD and an appendix on suicide. The advice in this book is not earthshaking, but I found it to be practical and realistic. I read it from the perspective of being a foster parent and found it helpful in that regard.
