The other reviews have said it better than I can and I agree with them all.
The only thing I can add to the other reviews, is this book is worth the wait and if you think it might be a bit pricey, check out the prices on some of the college text books today. This book is worth every penney to the amateur and serious cowry collector.
The Best Monograph I have purchased to date!!!.......2002-06-03
Without bogging the reader down with endless scientific minutae, this book treats the entire family of cowries in a manner useful to scientists and serious amatures alike. I have several books on cowries and this by far is best. The feature I especially like is the large quantity of high quality photographs of each species giving the reader not just many examples of each species but showing all the subspecies and varieties and explaining the differences. The explanations of the biology, life cycles, habitat and habits etc. is easily understood by nonscientists yet very useful to scientists. My copy came without a dust jacket so I asume that it was published that way...While this book may be purchased directly from the publisher the savings is only slight and is eaten up by the shipping costs from Germany. I recieved mine from Amazon in less than 2 weeks by UPS ground.

Expensive, but worth it. I have seen numerous other cowrie books (Burgess, Allen, Wallis, etc.) and believe nothing comes close. Lots of specimens showing lots of species variation. Highly recommended.

The best and most readily available resource on Yoruba cowry divination........2006-01-21
This is by far one of the greatest books on Yoruba traditional religion ever written and is THE best book on Cowry Divination i've ever gotten my hands on. As I understand it, some of the tonal markings in the Yoruba transcription are incorrect, but that can be easily reconciled by the diligent student. The premise is great; gather the complete knowledge of an elder and well respected cowry diviner, and translate his own words into English. This book succeeds in presenting a thorough window into the religion, mythology and divination systems without the obstructions placed by Western "thinkers", adding and deleting what is not really fit to be added or deleted. Any practitioner of the Lukumi-Santeria religion (Yoruba religious Diaspora) with some fundamental knowledge of the faith will quickly find many counterparts to their own knowledge in this book. The more knowledge one has of Lukumi, the more they will appreciate this book. It may be because my own knowledge of Ifa divination is lacking, but Bascoms Ifa: Divination between Gods and Men pales in comparison in the eyes of a student who wishes to learn more about the similarities, and not the differences between cultures.
For the Lukumi cowry diviner, and olorisha in general, several, if not many songs being sung by rote memorization without idea of meaning will be illuminated.
Some other Yoruba cowry books, pamphlets rather since they hardly go over fifty pages, are more practical in that they are short and concise and can probably be memorized in a matter of weeks. However, the unadulterated insight Bascom's book offers is priceless.

8/10 of this book are verses. However in despite Bascom had made a greate Job in Ifa Divination, here, I don't agree.
The meridilogun is based in Odu interpretation not only in verses. There is no information regard each Odu message, meaning, how to read the signm sub-signs.... If you want to understand how the meridilogun works, it is not here. I can believe people can use this system to use the Oracle, but, if is far from to be the only method. At least in case of this research it is failed. We have some Cuban's book about Meridilogun and I was waiting to find here the african reference (nos diasporic), but, well can't be so diferent.
Brilliant the Best........2003-01-24
One of the Most Brilliant Writers of the Orisha of modern day, Awo William Bascom has written some of the greatest books of Orisha and Yoruba Religion and Spirituality of our times. All of his books are destined to be classic in Orisha Literature.
16 Cowries as all his books are a must have for all young babalorishas and iyalorishas, and for the young Iyawo ask your godparents what there opinion is on this book, and I am sure you will get a good response. Of the few books of Merinndilloggun this has to be the best, in fact all of Awo Bascoms books blow away all the other books on the same subject. I highly recommend all the young Aborishas, and Iyawo, to check out his works. They are all a wealth of information and should be in every ones Library. Awo William Bascom has written some of the best books of Orisha Spirituality.

A Keeper.......2006-02-17
I am always dismayed at people that seem to criticize any attempt at writing about this spiritual system. Then they go and praise the efforts of academics that do this work purely for tenure at universities. This is not a book to be read and used by anyone. It is for Orisa Priests. Period. No one else can do anything else with this book, except cross reference something a priest told you during a divination reading and even still you have to understand that one book could not and never will provide all the possible scenerios. Only seeking out another Priest can you ever reliably "check" the work of another. Anyway... it is good. It is not "fake" (and it odd that someone calling them the "shells" would utter such a word) but limited. As are all books on spirituality. We have to encourage and promote writing so that eventually we "bogart" out all the truly fake books (I am not Lucumi, but I bought it!), or the ones written by academics and wiccans and neo-pagans that dont represent African Culture properly or even have a RIGHT to discuss our traditions! And we can support this author with confidence. Also, some of his other books address some of the weaknesses discussed in other reviews here. You don't buy this book as a standalone. You go get taught by an elder and you buy this book for perspective. Nothing is or ever will be wrong with that.
This book is too basic........2005-08-23
Because this book, Ochani Lele's freshman attempt, was the only book available in 2000 that gave an awesome overview of the diloggun, I give this book 5 stars. However, unless you are a total novice to the system, this book is too simple. Ochani has written a better book, his junior publication, with "The Diloggun." If you already have a basic grasp of this subject, do not buy this book; but "The Diloggun" and go from there. If you have no idea how to divine, begin with this book.
I would not buy this book if you have any skills as a diviner. But his Obi book in conjunction with "The Diloggun."

Ochanilele, aka Bart Stuart Myers, seems to have translated a whole lot of Cuban books on dilogun, but he failed to weed out the many many mistakes. What he is left with is a hodgepodge that is full of innaccurate information AND completely misses the point of divining with the shells. The people here who have praised this book obviously have a very limited understanding of the shells. [...]
The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination........2003-04-08
I am going to say Ashe for the author for taking his/her time for sharing the knowledge. This is not a book after reading it, that you will be able to cast the shells automatically. But, it give's a solid definition on the odu's. What it is lacking are the pataki's on the combination of the odu's. For each combination there is a pataki that go along with it. I am not against the production of this book for many reasons. For one, I have seen too many people get ocha and the God parent or parent's does not teach a darn thing. I have met iyalocha and babalocha who have six years ocha who can not even throw obi, never mind shells. I was fortunate enough to come from a teaching ocha house. But, alot of Ocha houses are not, and I repeat are not teaching houses. And will not take the time to show you what the odu's mean never mind, throwing them. So, for those who are in that position it is a very good start to know what the odu's mean. May I add this comment further to say the exploitation of the religion does not start with books like this. But, with the elder's who do not take the time to nurture their godchildren, and leave them like shrimps in the ocean. So please people stop blaming the authors, and let's look at the people who have the ocha houses...Thank You Sincerely Child of Oshun from New York City
Good Book, but a bit misleading.......2003-01-24
Okay I have to give my props to Ocha'ni Lele, he has written an excellent book, and all though not as good as Awo William Bascom's masterpiece "16 Cowries", it still is a good read. But it is very Good Book, but a bit misleading to all those who think that just buy reading this book, and playing with cowrie shells that they will instantly become an Italero or an Oriate. To fully write a book on the mysteries of reading los caracoles, volumes upon volumes would be required. And trust me, all that is reading the Dilloggun has not been written in this book, or any book for that matter. Dilloggun is not the tarot, we do not have the "Lets learn The Dilloggun for Begginners" As due all these dime a dozen Wiccan books, that make it look cheesy and cheap. In order to learn these ancient mysteries one must dedicate their life to the Orishas, ones godparents and ones Ile. Our Knowledge comes passed down as a parent passes down moral lessons to ones children.
So although this is a neat little into book to understanding the Basic Concepts of interpreting the Dilloggun, understand that there is so much information that can not be learned buy just reading, every good book needs a good professor behind it. Although I give my respects for Ocha'ni Lele's efforts, he is a good writer. Understand that these books can only give you limited information. It is books like these that can be dangerous to an ancient beautiful Spirituality. soon we will have the uniitiated Santero, or the solitary Wiccan initiated Santero running a 1-900 dilloggun Psychic Hotline.

This book is nothing short of spectacular! I am fully impressed by the photography, the artistic layouts, color schemes, map layouts, attention to detail and overall balance betweena art and science. Notwithstanding, the scientific text and information presented in this beautiful monograph is cutting edge, but the overall impression given to the reader is that you're looking at the finest work ever published and dedicated to this paricular subject. Shell collecting, in and of itself, represents a very small microcosm in zoology, but Australia's Spectacular Cowries has elevated this science to a great new and higher level. Mr. Jackson should be commended for an excellent job, and I believe that this work has raised the bar for all other publishers attempting to capture the essence and soul of shell collecting. This book is truly a piece of art! I have never seen any work on the subject that even compares to this effort. Many others I know will want to share and appreciate the pleasure of owning this top of the line jewel for decades to come.

Dr. Walls' book is very informative, has lots of illustrations and a good buy. However, I think the book should be updated since some new species have been discovered since 1975, and some of the pictures should be replaced (i.e pictures of dead-collected specimens)

Being new to rug hooking, I was in search of a book that covered everything, from start to finish. I purchased, and read 4 other books, but all seemed to be lacking the perfect detail Pat Cross includes in all of her sections. If you are new to hooking, let this be the first book you read! Most of the other books have only black and white pictures, but her book is done in color photos- a must, if you wish to see all the detail in hooked rugs. I would definately purchase any other books Pat Cross has on this subject!

Pat's book is a most comprehensive book on rug hooking in the primitive style...starting with a definition of primitive! Her style of writing is clear and clean...directions and ideas are abundant...patterns are included...and the color pictures just bring it all to life. This is a fairly comprehensive book dealing with biodegradtion. As a microbiologist and molecular biologist I use it to balance the organic chemistry I am lacking in the field. I do wish it showed more mechanisms, but otherwise a fine reference book.

Just enough information for those in search of a better understanding of the human body. Sections of the book are broken down into the different organ systems, their many functions and processes. Several implications are described and detailed with full color graphics. I especially appreciate the book's symptoms table, which allows you to identify symptom characteristics, associated symptoms, other relevant factors, and advises on possible causes and actions. This book has a sturdy structure that will stand up to the test of time. It is constucted of high quality paper, cardstock, and has a short thick stature. A must have reference for those in the health industry or interested in anatomy.

Worth every penny and then some.......2004-01-20
While this book will not get you through an Anatomy & Physiology class by itself, as a companion, it does an amazing job at summarizing and explaining complicated ideas in a way any lay person could understand. The illustrations are the best I have ever seen, easily surpassing my $135 A&P textbook. I wish I bought this book back then but I find it is equally useful now, as a refresher and reference for more advanced classes. Equally at home in a professional's office or lay person's home, the symptoms table in the end of the book is also a nice reference.
