The newest addition to Blackwell Publishing's "The 5-Minute Veterinary Consult: Clinical Companion" series, Canine And Feline Infectious Diseases And Parasitology is the impressively collaborative work of Stephen C. Barr and Dwight D. Bowman, two very highly qualified and respected experts in the field of canine and feline infectious diseases and parasite- related disorders. Written especially for clinicians and veterinary medicine students, Canine And Feline Infectious Diseases And Parasitology presumes the reader's basic familiarity with its particular topic as well as veterinary medicine in general. Each of the 105 chapters is devoted to a specific disease or parasite, arranged in alphabetical order; color photographs add a valuable visual touch to this no-nonsense diagnostic and treatment manual. Highly recommended -- especially for professionals in the field.

Very useful information, but the setup is mediocre.......2003-02-08

On the whole, I will not comment on the software itself, as it is a great tool in general; anyone familiar with the print edition will also very find this edition useful.
However, I do wish to warn anyone who thinks that the setup of this program will be particularly easy. Do not be fooled into thinking that by buying a CD-rom you will get all of the software at once. Instead, the CD includes an internet software package called "AvantGo," which, after successful setup will have you download the software to install onto your handheld.
This part of the setup I found rather disappointing. Why bother packaging a CD when you will have the customer do is go online afterwards?
Customer service provided by the publisher is non-existent (I sent them a question, but never received a reply--it's been two weeks now).
Finally, on the back cover of the CD case, the description mentions that images could be installed onto your handheld. In my hands, this is not the case.

The most used book on my shelf.......2005-10-17

Whenever I encounter a new disease, or need to refresh my memory about one I haven't seen lately, I reach for this book first. I find it to be concise, informative, and useful. While other medical texts make for good fireside or bedtime reading, this one cuts to the chase, and is useful in the midst of a busy veterinary schedule.
I use this book as my "nerd book", jotting notes in the margins when I learn something new about a disease from reading journals. Overall I am quite impressed at how up-to-date and complete the information is vis-a-vis JAVMA, the Compendium for Continuing Education, etc. I also appreciate that this book comes out in new additions often enough to keep up with the rapid changes in veterinary medicine.

Great Resource.......2004-01-27

I got this book a couple of years ago on the advice of my mentor. This book has really helped me out in school(esp. in my Problem-Based Learning classes). It is pretty easy to understand, is very concise, and it includes many commmon and uncommon diseases of small animals. However, not all information about specific diseases is included. This resource should just be used as a starting point. The formulary is useful, as is the section about diagnostic test results. I just wish they would come out with a 5-Minute Consult-Exotics Edition

Great user-friendly reference for vet students.......2001-05-23

This book is great when you just need the down and dirty on a disease, and don't want to wade through a 50-page description in the heavy-duty references. It was also very useful during second-year, when you're just trying your hand at figuring out the diseases, and need a little confirmation of your diagnosis and treatment plans. Or, when you're totally clueless and need help get started in the right direction. Fair warning, faculty usually won't accept it as 'reference' especially if you're trying to argue a point, but during a recent open-book final, I brought mine in anyway and there was practically a mob of other students rushing over to check out one thing or another.

5 Minute Veterinary Consult: Canine and Feline (CD-ROM for W.......2001-03-24

Tilley's 5 -Minute Veterinary Consult book has been an extremely valuable asset to my library. When the CD-Rom came out, it was even more useful in that immediate and current information can be retrieved much faster than picking up a book. It is faster since topics related to a case can be searched for and reviewed with a touch of your mouse. This information can be quickly printed and given to clients to further understand their pets diagnosed condition. This printed information alone is priceless! A client that has something in hand and can follow and confirm their veterinarian's diagnosis and treatment, helps establish the trust a client needs to have in their pets doctor.

I reach for my 5- Minute Vet Consult CD-rom more than any other resource in my library. It is very accurate and has a surprising amount of detail to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of each topic. The drug search is a very helpful formulary for those quick reference needs. The most recent CD has a good number of cytology and radiographic images attached to the topics. These can be enlarged to see more closely the great detail.

In my opinion the 5-Minute Veterinary Consult CD-Rom was one of the best reference investments for my practice. It is definitely the most utilized reference I have. Time is money and this has saved me many steps and thus time and money. Every practice needs this reference without doubt!

Color Harmony Book.......2006-11-16

The book's sub-title "A Quiltmaker's Guide to Exploring Color" summarises it well. This is a useful book for both beginning quilters to gain knowledge and confidence, or for any dedicated quilter wishing to enhance creativity and the visual impact of their quilts.

The book is well written, practical and informative. Divided into three sections, the first section provides a practical exploration of color and useful advice on selecting and storing fabrics. The second section comprises 15 chapters, each discussing a different palette. Each lesson focuses on a well-known traditional or contemporary quilt with the artist providing an explanation of the work. There follows an informative discussion on the relationship between the color selection and the quilt design. An interesting component of each chapter is several alternative ways to use the specific palette and a useful workshop activity. The final section comprises a gallery of quilts intended to inspire - they do.

I would recommend this book for any quilter's bookshelf. User-friendly explanations, practical applications intended to increase one's confidence in exploring color relationships, and an inspiring gallery of quilts. The book has it all.

Valuable Beyond My Expectations !.......2004-07-17

Read the book through once, then go back and really read it!
Not only do the authors show us their own quilts, they have showcased some of the best known, and unknown quilters intenationally. Every quilt is broken down as to which colors, values and proportions were chosen by the quilter...even the amount of black used in each quilt is represented on a scale. If you don't like the colors the quilter chose, they give you at least 3-4 other colorways and designs to choose from for every quilt shown! I only wish I had this information when I began quilting. Now I know I can break out of the box and create quilts that are really mine.

A must-have addition to quilters' libraries.......2003-12-28

Even in the first few pages of this book, I was learning something new about the use of colors in quilting. The book provides illustrations of color combinations and categories; as well as pictures of quilts employing interesting usage of color. There is plenty of wisdom packed into most of the sentences in this book so it is worth the reader's while to read carefully. My only point of contention with this book - and it is a minor one - is that I do wish there mught have been a few more pages, a few more illustrations! Despite that, I deem this a must-have for every quilter's library.

An Amazing Book.......2007-09-19

I cannot begin to express what a help this book and its program have been. I was mired in grief over losses going back into childhood, and absolutely devastated by a recent one which prompted me to order the book in the first place. This isn't something you just read. To affect a genuine recovery from grief you have to be willing to DO what the authors guide you to do, but it's absolutely worth the effort. Following through with the program doesn't cost a thing and can be done in the comfort of your own easychair. All you need is a pen or pencil and a few sheets of paper (a legal pad would be helpful but isn't necessary). I heartily recommend this to anyone who has suffered a loss, recently or in the past. It's a lifelong program that will help a person recover from loss, not just wait for time to heal (it doesn't!) or go around the loss by sticking it on an emotional shelf and forgetting it. An absolute must for anyone who really wants to RECOVER from a loss!

A lifetime tool..........2007-09-14

I was so impressed with this program that I got certified to facilitate it. It is a tool that can be used again and again as we hurdle the situations in life that might stop us in our tracks. If you are stuck in your grief, or are having trouble moving through a loss in your life,whether it be divorce or any other stress inducing change I highly recommend this book as well as the Grief Recovery Outreach Programs.

I read the earlier edition of this book, which deals with death only, and not other losses. I found it fascinating enough that I may try working through the steps outlined with a partner. Yet, I agree with some of the reviewers who feel that all these steps and the graphing of the highs and lows in a relationship may not be what is needed. I lost my husband of 30 years following a 2 1/2 year struggle with cancer, and I don't think regrets are a part of my grief. I miss him, and always will, even though I will eventually move on with my life. I'm not sure there is any such thing as recovery from the loss of one's life partner. There have been other deaths in my life: of parents, a stepchild, friends and lovers, but losing the person with whom I've shared every day (except for a few absences) is something I've never before experienced. I do agree with the premise of the book that our society just doesn't accept loss and grief, and doesn't know how to deal with it, other than to ignore it, or encourage people to get over it, or replace whatever or whomever has been lost. The book did strike me as highly prescriptive, and I can understand that this may bother some. I have done graphing of highs and lows in life in other contexts, however, and found it quite illuminating. So, I am willing to give this a try.

This book is a great book for those who are grieving any type of loss. I recently lost my husband, and this book offered me insights into the grieving process and how to move beyond it.

This book is an excellent resource for those who are grieving any kind of loss. It provides an action plan that is gentle and provides direction during a difficult, confusing and often disorienting time. I have used this resource with my clients and I know many other therapists who regard it highly and use it in their practices. If you get this, I would also recommend the classic On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss. After a big loss of any kind, I think it is very important to take action, but also make sense of the loss. Both resources I mention in this review will help with making meaning out of the loss and getting reoriented.
