"Searching for Friday\'s Child" chronicles the life of a young heroic soldier, his early life, duty in the Philippine Islands, on Bataan, Corregidor, and life as a Japanese POW during World War II, as told by letters, telegrams, the words of his close friends and those of his sister, the author.

5 out of 5 stars Touching and True.......2007-02-10

Howard "Jack" Irish was born to Michigan farm life. His family was close, his friends were true. He was a 4H lad, strong and faithful. He went to college, joined the ROTC and was drafted after he graduated in May of 1941. He was commissioned a lieutenant after training and sent to the Philippines. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December and all of a sudden Jack's sweet duty in the tropics evaporated like steam on hot pavement.

Jack saw action on Corrigador before he was captured by the Japanese. He endured life as a POW as well as anybody could, but sadly he lost his life in September of 1944, while being transported along with 749 other prisoners of war on the Japanese freighter Shinyo Maru. The Shinyo Maru was torpedoed by the USS Paddle. The sub's commander had no way of knowing the POWs were on board.

It all happened so long ago, but Marjorie makes it seem like only yesterday, so timeless is her writing. Jack was her brother and she lovingly tells this story through the numerous letters written by Jack to his family and friends before the war, the all to brief correspondence between Jack and his family after his family discovers he has been taken prisoner and the volume of letters between Jack's mother and different officials as she relentlessly sought to find out what happened to her son.

This book is so well crafted that at times it seemed as if I was reading a novel as I read the night away. I should have read the book long ago and I'm ashamed to say that that I did not, for you see, Marjorie's Uncle Ray was my grandfather. So many of the characters in her book have passed away, as has my father, Jack's cousin, who fortunately survived the war. Soon all the people from that time will have passed this mortal coil, but thanks to people like Marjorie Randall, who can tell a story without making it seem like dry history, there will be those of us left behind who remember.

5 out of 5 stars Sister searches for brother.......2003-06-08

I just finished reading Searching for Friday's Child for the second time. Each time I couldn't put it down until I finished.
Searching for Friday's Child is more than a portrait of an intelligent sensitive young man, it is a book about warm human relationships. Although Jack, a prisoner of war being transported from one Philippine Island to another or perhaps to Japan by the Japanese aboard the Shinyu Maru, died in his early twenties (a result of the torpedoing of the Shinyu Maru by an American submarine toward the end of Second World War), he lives in this book! It is clear from his letters to his family, his girlfriend and to his friends that we all lost a person who had much to offer to those he loved and cared about and to society.
Jack's words, through his letters, show us that he had a gift for writing and storytelling, as does the author, his younger sister. Searching for Friday's Child tells us of the author's emotional journey to find her brother, to discover things about him she hadn't known before, on an intimate level that I haven't found in any other memoir, autobiography or biography about the courageous soldiers of World War II. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A family's quest to ascertain the status of a WWII POW.......2003-03-29

I read this book in the past few days, only days after the beginning of America's 3/03 war with Iraq, which may be a partial explanation of why I found "Searching for Friday's Child" such a compelling read.

The book begins with the author's recollection of growing up on a Michigan farm, with her parents, and her brother, "Jack", four years her senior. We are then provided with copies of her brother's letters to home, and to his girlfriend, while he attends Michigan State College, when he is called into the Army Air Corps, from bootcamp, then when he is sent to the Philippines only months prior to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 and Japan's simultaneous attack on the Philippines.

As of 12/7/41, the letters from Jack stop, and we are treated with reply letters to Jack's family from U.S. military, the Red Cross, etc., as the family is desparately trying to find out what's happened to Jack, with the advent of the US/Japanese war. Subsequently, the family learns Jack is a POW in the Philippines, but they cannot find out how he is, whether he is alive, healthy, or been a victim of the myriad of attrocities committed by the Japanese solders in the Philippines upon our servicemen, as well as the Filipinos.

Jack's family is advised of the POW camp within which Jack is held, and advised they should continue to write Jack as he may receive their letters. They do continue to write, but have no way of ascertaining if Jack is receiving any of their letters. After several months, they receive the first of about four "postcards" from Jack, from the POW camp, but these tell little of Jack, as little can be said due to censorship by his captors.

Ultimately, the family is informed that Jack was aboard a Japanese ship, one of 750 POWs being transported in September 1944 by the Japanese to another island, or perhaps Japan, that on September 7, 1944, that ship is torpedoed by the US during which 83 POW's swim to shore and are rescued by Filipinos, and ultimately returned to the US. Unfortunately, Jack was not one of the lucky ones. Thereafter, he is listed as Missing In Action(MIA), and again the family has no way of knowing if Jack is alive or dead, whether he drowned, was shot by the Japanese, who were murdering all visible POWs after the torpedo struck, or whether he somehow survived.

We are then treated to many letters from several surviving POWs, some who knew Jack, were his friends at the POW camp.

This is a wonderful historical account of a family's desparate, yet compassionate, attempts to try to find out about Jack's well-being, his life during those years, anything to fill the gaps. It begins primarily with the efforts of Jack's mother, but is continued with those of the author, his younger sister, efforts which continued all the way up the late 1990's, over fifty years after WWII.

We are treated to the insights of several POW's, their own accounts of life in a Japanese POW camp, their accounts of life with Jack, Jack's excellent accomplishments in the Army Air Corps, his unique skills with operating anti-aircraft artillery, his command's success is shooting down 15 Japanese aircraft, which as I recall, was a record during the war.

By the time one completes Searching for Friday's Child, one feels one knows Jack Irish, his mother, father, and certainly his sister, the author, she who joined the U.S. Marines Reserves during WWII. One is certainly treated to a wonderful account of a close-knit family's quest during unimaginable times of the tragedies of war.

This is a wonderful read. I highly recommend it.

          Regards,

          Frank Rankin

5 out of 5 stars Riverting and sentimental.......2003-01-12

Marjorie Randell's recollection of her life growing up in a close-knit family on a Michigan farm, and her subsequent heartbreak of losing her brother and the search for meaning in his death is both sentimental and memorable. She captures the innocence of the mid-West that was torn apart as her brother, and other small town boys, were thrust into the horrors of war. The story shifts with her brothers letters - both from his service days, and then more harrowing, when he was a POW. Through his letters, we see a boy turn into a man, and at age 23, we see how his death aboard a Japanese war ship at the hands of American bombers brought agony and questions to a family back home. Sweet recollections of an innocent time lost, and the loyalty of a sister that looks for answers, even 60 years later.

          Product Description

In 1937, the Japanese invaded Nanking, China, and a terrible holocaust began. But amidst the depraved brutality, and terrible suffering, one unexpected heroine emerged: Minnie Vautrin, an American teacher and missionary who helped to found China's Ginling Girls College. There, in that college meant for 300 women, Vautrin risked her life to protect and shelter ten thousand girls from the horrors of the cruel and devastating Nanking invasion. Nanking is a story rich in human drama. Vautrin's friend, Yen Hsu, Chiang Kai Chek's leading diplomat, was not Vautrin's to love, but his daughters found their way to her during their greatest struggle, and she ensured their survival. But Vautrin was forever haunted by what she had seen, and she took her own life on May 16, 1941. Nevertheless, her legacy of hope, courage, and incredible bravery is sure to inspire the heroine-or hero-in all of us. And thanks to Kevin A. Kent's brilliant novel, it's ours to experience in these pages, as well.

2 out of 5 stars Petite Woman - love God, had gun and would kill?.......2007-03-10

Kevin Kent, wrote novel Nanking, based on a true story about Minnie Vautrin, an American missionary and educator to China at the Rape of Nanking 1937. He was feverish in telling the story with a note: Though based on historical events, many characters are fiction and created to enhance the story. However, the historical content must remain accurate. It was obvious that Kevin did not do his homework well.
As a Minnie Vautrin Scholarship Committee Member and Coordinator of St Louis Alliance for Preserving the Truth of Sino-Japanese War, I want to comment on the inaccuracies among others for the record with special reference to the scholarly history book "The American Goddess at the Rape of Nanking, the courage of Minnie Vautrin, by Dr Hua-ling Hu,
          1. In the FORWARD,. . . with the rise of Sun Yat-sen and his son-in-law, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek ... Both married the famous Soong sisters and they were brother-in-law.
          2. 1916 was the first year Minnie became Ginling's educational director and she built the girl's college in Nanking (p.10,11). Minnie did not join Ginling until 1919 and Ginling was not built by Minnie but by five missionary boards in 1915 Hu's book p.10-20.
          3. Nanking, a fishing village (p.28), sleepy trading town (p.65). Nanking, formerly known as Ginling was the capital of six dynasties.
          4. Minnie Vautrin a petite woman. Based on the photos on Hu's book, she did not fit the petite size.
          5. Minnie Vautrin went back to Secor, Illinois. According Dr Hu's book, in 1920's, the entire Vautrin family has moved to Shepherd, Michigan and no immediate family members remained in Secor. When Minnie came back from China in May 1940, she was escorted to enter a psychopathic hospital in Iowa City and then to Mafia, Texas and finally to Indianapolis. She never returned to Secor and was buried in Shepherd Michigan.
          6. Confucius was a famous poet (p129). Confucius was honored as a teacher and philosopher with no known poetry work.
          7. Minnie was armed with a pistol (p.172). There was no record of her weapon possession and violence. It was her Tao of virtue in peace over violence, weak over strong, hope over despair and humanity over cruelty.
          8. A Taoist loved her Buddha and the learned aphorisms of Confucius (p.233) It is an error expression to mix the philosophies of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism.
          9. The 200,000 + accounted for in this Japanese document did not include ... (p.321). This document is in Chinese.
Kent's sensational and bloody novel mixing real with fiction characters would confuse and mislead readers as to what really happened in Rape of Nanking and the courage of Minnie Vautrin. Interested readers in her real life are strongly advised to check my suggested books list. He spent many pages on the fiction but failed to cover Minnie's program and effort for the welfare of refugees. This hastely made novel with typos may be Kent's way to talk about Minnie Vautrin but it does not give truth nor do justice to her, John Magee and George Fitch and others. Kent writes with history in his veins, his heart and his soul (Back Cover). However, the Minnie Vautrin created through his mind and fabricated in the book was a petite American Mid-west woman who loved God, had gun and would kill - a strange and dangerous combination and misconception, contrary to the caring and loving American lady respected as the Goddess of Mercy so fondly remembered and honored by the citizens of Nanking.

Will the real Minnie Vautrin please stand up!

          5 out of 5 stars A powerful, haunting novel.......2006-05-30

Nanking is a profoundly powerful story about an American hero who stands proud in the face of mortal danger. It is a haunting portrait of an event that seems to have been deleted from the history books. I had never heard of Minnie Vautrin or of any American hero saving 10,000 lives in China. I read Shindler of course, but I had to wonder why was all this important Chinese American history buried?

The novel is a well-paced work of literature. In the beginning, (while the exposition and back story are cunningly pieced together) it reads a bit slower than I might have expected. This was because the first section is composed of historical set-up which I for one appreciated. It definitely shows Kent's comfort in the historical genre.

Once the story exploded into action, Nanking becomes a page turner in the truest sense, a novel that I had a hard time setting down. I felt like I was witnessing and living history rather than reading about it. Kent paints a beautiful and haunting, if at times brutal, portrait of war torn China.

It was stated quite clearly that Nanking the novel is historical fiction, but the fictional elements are woven so tightly into the story, creating a sense of wholeness that many historical novels lack. Kent has managed to illuminate a period of time that I knew nothing about and has done it in a way that will stick with me for a long, long time. Whether you are a student of history or just someone looking for a good read, I highly suggest this one.

          5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable.......2006-05-27

Part of Nanking's story is the horror of the events themselves. The other part is that no one seems to know about it. How could this shocking portion of recent history have been omitted from our history classes? Its secret is coming out... as are so many others we are discovering that have been carefully swept under the rug until now.

Kevin Kent's telling of this utterly wrenching, horrific slice in history is one part passionate historian... and one part brilliant storyteller. That latter is key; because it allows the former's message to come through in no uncertain terms. This story needs and deserves to be told - yet the events and facts are harsh, brutal and incomprensibly inhuman. The scale of it is staggering; in numbers, far greater than the number of Jews annihilated in Nazi Germany. In brutality, probably on a par. But our media-saturated American culture mostly hasn't even heard of this broad-stroke genocide... and I'm betting wouldn't be willing to sit down and read a stark, historical account of it.

Enter Kevin Kent. His superb storytelling abilities present Nanking's story within a deeply human context. Giving us the grand scale picture in no uncertain terms; but also bringing it home to us through the eyes of people - some real, some fictional - that we come to know, understand and care deeply about. In turn, it sparks an interest in knowing more about Nanking and this portion of history which may have been ignored in America... but it truly affects us to this day.

Kent calls it a "novel based on a true story".
Minnie Vautrin was in fact, a real person... one whose accomplishments are astounding. In my book, she's a true American hero. It's hard to imagine a selflessness and caring for others in today's culture that could rival hers. Right there, it makes her story one that should be told over and over again. There are other people in the book who were real too - and some that weren't. Yet they all weave togther, make sense and matter intensely as they spring to life amidst events that are indeed heartbreakingly true on the pages of "Nanking".

As I read this book, it played on the screen of my mind like a feature film. Powerful, technicolor images... a gorgeous land, filled with fascinating people... events that stagger the mind... involving people whose love, caring and passion I'll never forget.

          Nanking.
Its story should NOT be forgotten.
Thanks to Kevin Kent... perhaps it never will.

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Kent's Nanking is Mesmerizing.......2006-05-27

I couldn't put this book down. Kevin Kent has written a tribute to an American herione who saved 10,000 lives during the siege of Nanking. His fictionalization of the storyline seems plausible. He intertwines fiction with fact beautifully. I highly recommend this as a satisfyingly good read.

"Feeding is a metaphor for the parent/child relationship overall," says Ellyn Satter, author of How to Get Your Kid to Eat ... But Not Too Much. Satter stresses her "Golden Rule" of parenting: parents are responsible for what is presented to eat and the manner in which it is presented. Children are responsible for how much or even whether they eat. Early chapters describe basic feeding principals. Satter then stresses ways to develop and maintain normal eating patterns from birth through adolescence, and provides solid information (and information on "solids") to both empower and relieve all parents worried about how their child eats. Later sections focus on feeding problems, obesity, special needs children, and eating disorders. How to Get Your Kid to Eat ... But Not Too Much may be the most sensible and accessible book on childhood feeding on the market.

                      Book Description

Answering a multitude of questions—such as What should a parent do with a child who wants to snack continuously? How should parents deal with a young teen who has declared herself a vegetarian and refuses to eat any type of meat? Or What can parents do with a child who claims he doesn't like what's been prepared, only to turn around and eat it at his friend's house?—this guide explores the relationship between parents, children, and food in a warm, friendly, and supportive way.

I use this book in my practice to loan out to new mothers and also as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Great stress reliever for first time parents.......2007-01-09

We hear it all the time that most children are picky eaters and go through food jags. However, as often as we hear it, when your child does it there is still stress. First time parents have a difficult time dealing with the ups and downs of their child's food intake. This book is a great resource and provides some really practical advice on how to make mealtime less stressful for everyone. It is written by a registered dietitian with a good deal of experience counseling parents and children. I got this book during my child's second year, so the advice she gives on the younger years I did not utilize and skipped over. What she suggests does work, and I find I just don't get uptight about how much he's eating. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

2 out of 5 stars No help for early toddler stage.......2006-12-02

This book doesn't help if you're struggling with a toddler too young to really communicate rationally with. The chapters go from introducing solids to babies under the age of one, to dealing with toddlers at least 2 years old. That crucial time between 12 months and 2 years is neglected and there is no help for picky eaters you can't negotiate with. You can't ask a 17 month old to "try one bite", or explain to him that if doesn't eat now, that's it, because after this it's bedtime. The book has a good point about parents deciding when and what to eat, and the child deciding if and how much he'll eat, but when you're dealing with a young toddler and communication is limited, and negotiations are impossible, the author falls short in giving helpful advice or even acknowledging that this is a difficult stage.

                      2 out of 5 stars judgmental!.......2006-02-28

The advice in this book is solid and appropriate for most kids. However, the writer's attitude is judgmental. If you are buying this book, it's probably because your child's eating has not gone as smoothly as you'd like. For most of us, a lot of our parental self-esteem is wrapped up in this issue. So it just makes no sense to act as if it's usually the parent's fault - why alienate and beat up your target audience???? Plus, while I'm sure that some parents contribute to kids' eating issues, plenty of kids are just born more sensitive! If you can read between the lines and get to the take home message without letting her attitude get to you, more power to you - otherwise, go elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Good for ending food-related conflicts.......2005-11-11

This book was recommended to me by our pediatrician when my then one-year-old son wasn't gaining weight rapidly enough. While his problem was not of the seriousness of failing to thrive, it was extremely stressful to my husband and I as first-time parents. And I learned the foundations for parent-child food conflicts can be laid well before the child can participate in a discussion.

I was not interested in having the rest of my life turned into a food battle ground, and this book helped permanently defuse any conflict. My parenting style is relaxed. My husband's style is old school. And my son is willful. Satter's recommendations worked for all of us.
