      5 out of 5 stars BOOK(S) WITH A WONDERFUL PURPOSE........2007-04-13

THis work, Volume II, is like the others. A wonderful history of how it was. In this day and age of having most needs meet and something for everyone on the Wal-mart shelf, we tend to forget just what it was like in our not too distant past. These books, the Foxfire books, brings to light skills, attitudes and a way of life that is all but forgotten. This is a good thing. When a people lose their history, they lose part of their soul. As the title of this work states, Ghost Stories, Wild Plant Foods, Spinning, Weaving, Midwifing, Corn Shucking, and there is so much more. The editors have done a wonderful job. They have made a very honest effort to replicate the dialect of those places and times and I feel that this is a big part of the charm of these books. I am old enough to have known many of the kinds of folks featured in these books, being only one generation past them, and have a great appreciation for what and how they did all the little things we take so for granted now. I might also suggest that you actually try some of the things mentioned in these volumes. It will give you even more of an appreciation for what they did, and hey, who knows, the skill you develope just might come in handy one of these days! Recommend this and the other Foxfire books highly.

Have enjoyed all the Foxfire Books for years. They are a wonderful peek into the lives of hardy people who survived without a single benefit from the U.S.Government.........and were proud of it.

      1 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-03-15

I bought this book for my husband and he loves it! There are so many interesting facts in these books. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in how things were back in the "old" days. Everyone, no matter how young or old, will learn something from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Foxfire books are excellent.......2003-07-29

Years ago we owned all the Foxfire books, and then we donated them to the library so others could glean the wisdom they had, and we have slowly begun to but copies for our home library and this is one that I wanted first. Simply because it had information on burial customs and I make plain pine burial boxes. And because it has excellent information on wild plants that are edible in the spring and we love to forage for wild plants for food like stinging nettle, fiddle fern and dandelion. The section on bee keeping is also informative. Then there is the wonderful section on midwives which is of personal interest to me, as well as the wonderful section on how to wash clothes in an iron pot, because being vagbond-homestead-mountain mode people we like good clean clothes washed in an environmentally sound manner using the least amount of soap possible.

The Foxfire series is one that comes up on various simple living, homestead, frugal websites and web boards. So I know that millions of people have over the years found the series of books to be invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars I love the series of these books.......1999-09-13

The series of Foxfire books takes you back in time when life was hard physically but simplier mentally. While reading these books I fell like I am in a time capsule being transported back in time ninety or so years. I enjoy past history and anything to do with mountain country around the Smokies. These peope lived off the land and took the time to enjoy life and their families. These books provide tips for things that are still done the same way, such as tanning hides. Norma Doyle, Florida

          Book Description

The painful and baffling mystery as to why some obvisiouly brightchildren do not begin talking until long after the "normal" time isexplored in this book through personal experiences and the findings ofscientific research. The author's own experiences as the father of sucha child led to the information of a group of more than fifty sets ofparents of similar children. The anguish and frustration of these parentsas they try to cope with children who do not talk and institutions thatdo not understand them is a remarkable and moving human story.Fortunately, some of these children turn out to have not only normalintelligence but even outstanding abilities, especially in highlyanalytical fields such as mathmetics and computers. These fascinatingstories of late-talking children and the remarkable families from whichthey come are followed by explorations of scientific research that throwlight on unusual development patterns.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Sowell.......2007-07-09

Dr. Sowell has done all parents a tremendous service, but this book is especially helpful for those parents who are questionning their child's development. He reminds us that "every child is different." We've all heard that expression used to catch the vagaries of the development process, but you'll never realize how hollow it can ring until some childcare type tells you that they think your child may be developmentally delayed. This book helps deal with the certainty that your child *is* different and puts it in perspective. It should be read along with the followup book "The Einstein Syndrome."

After two years of self-study in this area, I still found a great deal to learn in these books. Most of all, I found a lot of hope and perspective regarding kids that don't sit up and elocute at 18 months.

The best advice in this book: take your children with you everywhere, expose them to everything possible. When they're ready to communicate, you'll have lots to talk about. My son is still working his way along, but we've made great progress, as others have, by letting him have some space and grow at his own pace.

Another great idea reinforced by this book: Don't assume that your child doesn't understand or is behind because they don't speak. I've seen childcare "professionals" that make this mistake every day.

Finally, this book hints at the danger of over-assessing children and the problems of the incentive structures within public schools. I have seen first-hand how problematic the opinions of pseudoprofessionals can be, and how unscientific they are. The second book covers this threat to society in more depth.

This book helped me help my son, and that's the important thing. We are in debt to Dr. Sowell for bringing this issue to light.

          3 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-03-09

I thought this was a very interesting book. I really enjoyed the anecdotal information and the stories about his son. Definitely worth reading if you are curious about the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Late Talking Children.......2006-08-27

Excellent book. Empowers parents and honors children. Mr. Sowell's sharing of his own experience and that of others is powerful and useful.

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-07-27

I read this book because I was so worried about my son. After having 3 daughters, I noticed that my son's speech was delayed. The words "autism", "speech therapy", and other associated words cropped up in the "professionals'" language. When I read this book, it was like I was reading a biography of my son. Now, 3 years later, he's still following the pattern of the kids in this book. His speech is so much better, and I have to laugh because had I taken him to speech therapy, I would have been impressed at how well it must have helped! Some people get very angry towards this author because they say that their children really are autistic and they wasted time by not treating their children after reading this book. If that's the case, then the author isn't talking about their children and he makes that clear in his book. Sowell saved me lots of time, money, and anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars Revisiting Late Talking Children by Thomas Sowell.......2005-12-27

I benefitted enormously from this book. I was amazed at the venom unleashed [by only a few reviewers] on this informative and helpful book, which makes no claims to be based on scientific studies but on anecdotal evidence that fell into the writer's lap because he had to struggle through the anxiety of observing and, yes, testing his own late-talking child. It is not a how-to-book, nor does it attempt to give parents diagnostic tools. The anecdotal approach is helpful because it does not present just the situation of one child, but the predicament of many who fall outside the parameters of the lists that now proliferate in the health care community which pretend to establish rigid parameters of normal development, despite disclaimers to the contrary.

Late Talking Children does not pretend to be a panacea but to offer useful insight into the phenomena to parents who may well become involved with a health care system which is not always parent-, child-, or family-friendly. Kudos to Dr. Sowell.

          Book Description

Every parent eagerly awaits the day his or her child will speak for the first time. For millions of mothers and fathers, however, anticipation turns to anxiety when those initial, all-important words are a long time coming. Many worried parents are reassured that their child is 'just a late talker,' but unfortunately, that is not always the case. Co-author Lisa Geng was one of those parents, and she dis-covered that her children had serious speech disorders. Balanced with a mother's perspective and an acclaimed doc-tor's experience, this book gives parents needed guidance on: -The warning signs of a serious speech disorder -Finding the right therapist for their child -Negotiating with school boards, teachers, and service providers -Exercises to do at home with a child. The Late Talker is a needed and valuable resource for millions of parents.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!!.......2007-10-13

I can't seem to locate my review from when this book was first released, but I will attempt to remember what I posted.

This book covers nearly every aspect of the delayed speech journey. As with any special needs child, the results of any type of intervention will vary. This includes therapy, medication, or supplements. My son was helped immensely by the Essential Fatty Acids. I recommend them to moms of all special needs children, along with Dr. Stordy's book, THE LCP SOLUTION: The Remarkable Nutritional Treatment for ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia I saw a dramatic difference in my sons' speech in three weeks. This was using a higher dosage than is recommended on the bottle. I know many success stories and several who didn't have dramatic results. This is not surprising as special needs children respond in individual ways to all interventions.

My son has several diagnoses and one is Speech Apraxia. While one of the authors (Lisa Geng) is the mom of an Apraxic son, there is much helpful material beyond the Apraxia diagnosis.

All of the specific information regarding red flags, insurance, interventions, or therapies are applicable to any speech delay/disorder. Handling the frustrations or negative people are applicable to any speech diagnosis.

Due to my son's medical history, he was delayed in all areas. His therapy from birth changed due to development and actually didn't change much once his speech was considered a disorder and no longer just delayed.

I highly recommend this book for anyone with a child who has delayed speech!

          1 out of 5 stars Find Another Book/This Isn't Helpful Material.......2007-07-14

This book put a lot of fear into me, rather than be helpful. The premise of the book seems to be that if your child isn't speaking as well as the charts say they should, then you need to get your child involved in INTENSIVE therapy several times a week ASAP or you run the risk of your child becoming very depressed and they may even become suicidal!! I'm sorry, but that's the LAST thing a parent needs to hear, especially when they're probably already anxious about their child's development or else they wouldn't be reading this book. There are much better books out there! Also, it had a whole chapter devoted to how fish oil capsules have helped numerous kids speak better... and although I haven't researched this issue and perhaps there might be some truth in it, it certainly isn't as the author makes it seem-He gives several examples of these kids who weren't saying ANY words and then all of a sudden they take fish oil and within a few DAYS they are speaking several words-yeah, right!!! I highly doubt that. Though there is no doubt that fatty acids are good for you and important, but they're not miracle makers. Anyhow, that's my take on this book.

5 out of 5 stars learning to talk.......2007-07-13

I have friends with a three year old who doesn't talk. They said this book was very helpful in giving help to the child and directing them where to go to also get help.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Helpful book........2007-05-24

I am currently in school for Speech Language Pathology (speech therapy) and this book covers in the first few chapters much of what was covered in my first semester in school. It takes hard to understand information and makes it very clear and concise. I wish that this would have been the book we read instead of the textbook we were assigned, as this one makes more sense!

Overall, a great book that everyone can get something out of, but it is especially geared toward children with apraxia and more than a mild delay in speech. However, I think the first couple of chapters are a must read for anyone with a child with even the most mild of speech delays.

Above all...if you suspect a delay, get your child tested! EI is a free screening for everyone, regardless of income! The earlier you start, the better the outcome. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!!

5 out of 5 stars The One Light In A Dark Journey.......2007-03-29

This book has been the one light for us in a dark journey of finding out how to help our son who has Down. Syndrome and Apraxia. Thank God we had a talented speech therapist who first diagnosed the problem. Since we have had an up-hill battle with therapists and even family members who don't understand that our son understands everything said to him but can't respond as he would like and the frustration that brings...

This has some wonderful how to examples of how to go about getting help and how to cope with feelings.

It is the top of my list of a number of books for help with Apraxia

          Thank You

          Book Description

Children with autism and their life partners - their parents, families, peers and educators - who are not on the autism spectrum can feel as though they live in separate, and even incompatible worlds. Communicating Partners, the result of over thirty years of clinical practice, research and professional teaching, offers an innovative approach to working with children with ASDs that focuses on developing these relationships through mutual understanding.

          5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2006-01-13

When we started doing the things suggested in this book our sons language and communication started to grow much more than before. The method is very easy, and yet so hard. The point is that to help our son develop, we have to change to fit him. This book covers all you need to get started right away (without even reading the whole book). It's great both for parents and professionals. My son has Down syndrome.

5 out of 5 stars This book has been the MOST helpful!.......2005-03-15

After reading this book, and I have previously read other books by Dr. MacDonald, I must say that the techniques in it are the most family friendly ideas I've ever heard of! The viewpoint is so refreshing, to think that we as families CAN be the most influential people in our child's social development is a new approach. This book has shown me how to incorporate very do-able ideas into our everyday life. The techniques included in it are something the entire family can learn and can supplement any professional's course of therapy. Professional therapists would also find this valuable...it concentrates on the social aspect of development, and really, that is the basis for all communication. To get into the child's world and to be able to match his abilities, without judgement or correction, has unbelievable, immediate results! I highly recommend this book, to families, educators, therapists, and physicians!
