Book Description
From Charlotte's Web to Porky Pig and Babe, Americans betray a curiously deep regard for pigs. Hog Ties looks at this phenomenon, its relation to American culture, and the way in which themes of life and death are played out in the care, feeding, slaughter, and eating of pigs. Intermingling silly asides with serious subjects, existential concerns with environmental issues, the book considers the ways that pigs might help Americans address powerful human concerns.
"An eccentric song of praise to all things porcine, a compendium of information on transmissible gastroenteritis, and a showcase for Horwitz's beguiling essayistic style." Times Literary Supplement (London)
"This book provides pleasant surprises on many levels. . . .Hog Ties is a thoughtful, worthwhile examination of a major part of the American food industry and of a way of life." Seattle Times
Richard P. Horwitz is professor and graduate director of American studies at the University of Iowa as well as senior fellow of the Coastal Institute in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Since 1978 he has moonlighted as a hired hand on a two-thousand-acre hog/cattle/grain farm.

Book Description
Sustainable Protein Production and Consumption: Pigs or Peas? is a book that presents and explores the PROFETAS programme for development of a more sustainable food system by studying the feasibility of substituting meat with plant based alternatives. The emphasis is on improving the food system by reducing the use of energy, land, and freshwater, at the same time limiting the impacts on health and animal welfare associated with intensive livestock production. It is clear that such a new perspective calls not only for advanced environmental and technological research, but also for in-depth societal research, as the acceptance of new food systems is critically contingent on perceptions and attitudes of modern consumers. In this unique multidisciplinary setting, PROFETAS has opened up pathways for a major transition in protein food production and consumption, not by just analyzing the food chain, but rather by exploring the entire agricultural system, including biomass for energy production and the use of increasingly scarce freshwater resources. The study presented here is intended to benefit every stakeholder in the food chain from policymakers to consumers, and it offers guiding principles for a transition towards an ecologically and socially sustainable food system from a multi-level perspective.

I've been there..........2001-01-03
This straightforward book offers realistic insight into the hard work of farm life.
Fricke's sensitive descriptions of MidMissouri countryside are reminiscent for me. A city girl, I taught a year in a one-room rural school just across the river from the setting of the book. Much later, my husband, once a farm boy from the same county, became an ag professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He initiated a series of Feminine Farrowing Schools. In brief sessions, ag instructors trained women to work with piglets as the author had to learn on her own -- enduring plenty of criticism from her demanding husband.

Book Description
There is now widespread interest in the development of in vitro methods for assessing the digestibility of feedstuffs for monogastric farm animals, i.e. pigs and poultry. In vivo methods require the use of surgically modified animals, which is becoming less favored due to an increased awareness of animal welfare; such methods are also expensive and slow. A number of research groups around the world are now developing in vitro methods, and this book, based on a workshop held at the Rowett Research Institute in October 1990, presents our current knowledge of the subject. Contributors are leading authorities on the subject from Europe, North America and Japan. The book will therefore be of interest to research workers in animal nutrition in both academic institutions and the feedstuff industry.

Book Description
From Charlotte’s Web to Porky Pig and Arnold Ziffel, Americans are obsessed by pigs. In Hog Ties, Richard Horwitz looks at this obsession, its relation to American culture and the way in which themes of life and death are played out in the care, feeding, slaughtering and eating of pigs. Horwitz grew up in a rural, Jewish household in the Northeast and worked part-time as a farm hand on a large Iowa pig farm. As much a memoir of rural life as it is a work of cultural commentary, Hog Ties looks at the current business of pig farming, its roots in the family farms of the Midwest and its future in the large conglomerates that take over small farms and increasingly separate the farm families from their land. In the lives and trials of pigs and their caretakers, Horwitz sees a mirror image of our own lives, our fight against myriad diseases, our ultimate death, possible redemption and therein discovers the Tao of pig. Hog Ties is a book that readers will ponder long after the last page has been turned.
Customer Reviews:
An objective view of pigs, people, culture, and business........1998-11-10
I liked this book very much. Since I am an agriculturalist, I was somewhat skeptical going in, but I consider it a solid piece of work.
It is a very thoughtful look at American culture through the porthole of the relationship of people to pigs.
Many people have commented on the plight of "family farmers" as affected by "integrated" agriculture, but they either have a political agenda or little real understanding. In this case, tremendous effort is made by the author to understand the business of pigs and pork, and changes in society and the pig industry. This description of the swine industry is a studied, objective viewpoint, even if it is incidental to the real purpose of the book.
Mainly, the book is a unique study of human beings and relationships to each other and other species, including pathogens. The book contains thought-provoking observations on life, death, culture, agriculture, multiculture, and communication.
There's also some humorous, but basically true observations about academia and faculty challenges, all in the context of "sh__ happens."
To people very close to the industry, there may be a few observations of the business in error, slightly skewed interpretations of events, and (very few) errors in describing technology. However these are insignificant to the intent and lessons to be learned, and should be forgiven. Industry insiders should be tolerent when reading some portions of Hog Ties, but it is well worth the effort to see an objective "outsider's" point of view.
There may be portions of the book that seem tedious to readers not interested in the swine industry or swine disease, but if those readers stay with the author through such depths, interesting parallels are drawn.
Judging portions of the book out of the context of the whole work could lead to misinterpretation.
This would be interesting to anyone, but should be required reading for those in agriculture.

the best.......2000-07-08
THIS IS SUCH A GREAT BOOK!!! I have always loved pigs and this book told me all these interesting facts. I have always loved the movie "Babe" and it is nice to know there are people out there that like pigs too. My friends who is obsessed about pigs liked this book too.
Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful companion book.......2005-10-19
I just checked this book out from the local library and after skimming through it, marking what I want to go back and read in detail, I am convinced that this is a book that I can't be without! This book has TONS of detailed information, including several chapters on the genetics of rabbits. It is the first book that I have found that just doesn't gloss over rabbits as a whole, but actually gets down to the nitty gritty. There's a lot of detailed information about the diseases, how to have a successful rabbitry (if that is your goal), food guidelines, the importance of vitamins, etc. Do yourself a favor: get ahold of this book!
A Fount of Knowledge that Needs a Little Tweek..........2005-09-30
This reference is an excellent source of information in regards to management systems, feeds & feeding, breeding, production, etc. What I find lacking is how little effort seemed to go into the breed illustrations. Rabbits depicted are poorly posed and therefore make a very unsatisfactory representation of the breeds' description. If you can get past that little bump, the book - for its wealth of knowledge is an excellent resource for rabbit breeders or those considering embarking on that adventure.
The One.......2003-09-29
This reference (notice I didn't say "book") is incredibly valuable for first timers with no animal experience through long time, large scale producers. When I started out with my first pet rabbit, I used the '96 edition all the time for freak-out moments like a crusty ear or just to satisfy my curiosity. Now that I'm almost done with college and ready to start up my own herd again, the 2000 edition proves twice as useful. Make sure you put your name and address on the inside cover!
Rabbit Production: 8th Edition.......2000-05-12
If you can only get one book on rabbits, this is the book to get! Considered by many rabbit breeders, exhibitors, owners to be 'THE' book on rabbits. The authors are rabbit owners/breeders themselves and they know whereof they speak. Easy to read and understand, it includes a history of rabbits, genetics, feeding, housing, breeding, medical care, the merits of rabbits as pets, rabbits in therapy, just about anything you would ever need or want to know about rabbits. This book is well worth every penny of the cost. It's a very modest investment when you want to provide the very best for your rabbit, or rabbits, no matter why you have them.
Rabbit production.......2000-04-08
This is a classic in raising rabbits commercially. Not the latest edition (the 8th edition is the newest), but still very useable. The main difference between this edition and the newest is that there are no color photos. This book contains practical important information on raising rabbits commercially that simply cannot be found elsewhere. Not a how-to book for pet rabbit owners, but a serious manual for producing high quality healthy rabbits in an economical manner. I would not attempt to raise rabbits commercially without this "bible" on the bookshelf.

Design your own coat of arms: an introduction to heraldry.......2007-04-03
Great book for beginner Heralds!!!
Better for older children.......2005-10-16
In this book there is more historical information, and descriptions. Great for older children that can draw well.
Elementary.......2005-03-17
This book provides a very elementary introduction to Heraldry. The basic layout of a Coat of Arms is discussed, including a very brief history, along with the rules of placement and description for the major elements. The author also includes some discussion of the prevailing Heraldry of countries around the world, including medieval countries. The appendixes include elements for the user to trace or imitate when creating their own Coat of Arms. Lastly there is some contact information for organizations involved with Heraldry.
The book lacks depth. It provides nothing resembling an exhaustive list of elements; only a few basic forms and styles are covered. Further there is nil discussion concerning the meaning of the elements presented. The most a reader can learn is that crowns and lions rampant are symbols of Royalty, and some of that we have to infer. The work feels directed to early middle school children and should probably be marked as Young Reader.
Great Intro to Coat of Arms heraldry (Scanable Blanks).......1999-09-16
This is a great place to start playing with your family designfor your own Coat of Arms..

Customer Reviews:
Good book, bad title.......2001-09-04
The title of this book is entirely misleading. There is nothing whatsoever in the book pertaining to the politics of the playground, but a great deal of very good sense pertaining to how parents can assist their children to surmount developmental challenges. Apart from the usual North American neurotic attitude towards sexuality (that surfaces in Chapter Seven) this book is sensible and instructive. It avoids useless platitudes and instead provides parents with hands-on guidance that is neither foolish nor redundant. Even those parents whose children are progressing satisfactorily will find much here to prompt their thinking in ways that will lead to even greater richness of parent-child interaction. Along with "Siblings Without Rivalry" this is one of the must-have books for a parent's library.
Very insightful & well written.......2001-01-04
As children grow and mature, they go through many different stages in their lives, each requiring support and understanding. The book, "Playground Politics", by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, offers us a look into the behaviors of children ages 5-12, and the emotional and developmental phases that they experience.
There are no concrete answers to help children cross over successfully from one stage to the next. What we can do, is try to understand the reasoning behind their behavior and feelings, and learn how to be a more supportive caregiver.
My ParenTime highly recommends "Playground Politics" - it gives us that special insight to explore, understand, and nurture our children's stages for growth, development, and emotional well-being.
A "must" for any parent with a school age child........2000-08-13
This book is one of the most straight-forward books I have read about the emotional stages of children from the time they enter kindergarten through their teen years. In easy to understand language, this book allows parents to enter into the minds and hearts of children and view the world from their perspective. I found it extremely useful for the insight it provides about the role that friends play in children's lives and how we, as parents, can provide support as they face the emotional challanges of human interaction.
