Easy on the eyes and too light on the instructions........2007-09-11
I thought that this would be a good reference for me, as I am new to the whole sewing thing. However, the book has no information in it that I could not find in more comprehensive guides to sewing. The pictures are colorful and the diagrams are somewhat helpful, but there is no information in this book that did not come in my sewing machine manual.
Very Helpful for Absolute Beginner.......2007-07-22
This book was recommended by several folks on a sewing forum so I ordered it. It really is a great book for beginners. i had no prior sewing experience and found it easy to understand and follow. I definitely recommend this book.
excellent book.......2007-05-08
this book is very self explainable and easy to apply towards projests for non sewers
Good Reference Book.......2007-04-10
This is an excellent book for the beginner and especially as a reference book as one learns about sewing. I recommend it to anyone who can read.
Great Book!.......2007-03-08
I really enjoy reading and referencing this book. The pictures and material covered are very essential in understanding how to sew. This is exactly the type of material I had been looking for. I highly recommend this book.

Perfect!.......2007-10-12
I got this book and learned how to sew in elastic. I'm now making my own bathing suits. Living in Southern California I go through a lot of bathing suits and they're not cheap! I'm extremly happy with my amazon purchase.
If you WANT to learn to sew, get this book!.......2007-10-11
This is one of the best sewing books that I've come across. I bought it for my 14 year old daughter who wants to learn to sew. Going over the projects and the information in this book, it covers everything you'll need to know to start sewing. My daughter loves it and is having fun with sewing. I'm getting her the Rip It! book as well. And nice job on the news video below!

A company that knows their stuff. www.sewfastseweasy.com.......2007-10-09
So I bought this book for my girlfriend who wanted to learn to sew after becoming obsessed with project runway. After receiving the book I did a little research on the company. They offer sewing classes to the public in New York City and have been for the past 15 years. I found that they had online video classes and my girlfriend took the men's underwear video. She wont stop making me briefs and I love it. She also made some lacy tanga panties for herself from another one of their videos. Thank you Sew fast Sew easy!!
Totally Tubular.......2007-10-08
This book is radical. My mom got me a couple sewing books. This is by far my fav. The other she got me, "sewing for dummies" was boring and didn't include patterns to work on. This book taught me a lot and I moved on to the Rip It! book which I also love. Do the skirt pattern and add a belt, it's so hot right now. I love wearing the clothes I've made to school. You won't be dissapointed

Good Basic Information for the beginning sewer.......2006-06-07
I would be what you call an intermediate sewer. I have quilted and sewn simple garments and home decor items for years. The reason I got this book was for some help in trying to determine the best way to construct and sew a lined bedspread, something I have not done yet. I did not find what I was looking for, the closest thing being the self-line valance, but I did not want self-lined. I checked this book out of the library, but I would definitely recommend it for the novice sewer. It has really good basic information about machines, supplies, how to sew a seam, matching fabric and more. It then goes into actual sewing projects from valances to cushions, napkins and pillows. Overall, I think this is a very good book for the beginning sewer.
A Decent Start.......2006-02-20
I am someone who bought a sewing machine, had ABSOLUTELY NO PRIOR SEWING EXPERIENCE and I must say, this little book has helped me tremendously. There are so many little things that people who already sew take for granted such as fabric information. Sure, like any book, you may run into something that you still don't quite get, but after my first couple of projects, I dared to do a very simple pattern for my daughter and she actually likes it. I also find that while sewing, I sometimes refer to the book for reassurance for a simple technique. Again, I'm totally brand new (2 1/2 weeks of sewing). The book goes from a simple square pillow and very gradually, gets on to things that are a little more challenging that wont completely freak you out. For instance, I sewed the basic pillow, and then moved on to a box style square pillow with stripes. Until then, I had no idea about what it took to match patterned fabric. This was a wonderful introduction for me. I'm not afraid to try the stuff in the book, and for me that is totally key. Surely it's worth the inevestment.
Perfect for the total novice.......2005-02-09
This book is easy to follow because of the clear photos you get for every step and along that the clear explainations. Every project is step-by-step, so it's easy to understand!
It explains everything from the very basics because the writer assumes that you know nothing about sewing.
The book starts out with the "How to use this book" chapter, then
the "Sewing basics" (principle parts common to all modern sewing machines)+ you'll need your own manual!
"Machine accessories" (all the things come with your machine and what to use them for and how),
"Getting ready to sew" (how to thread the machine, change the needle, etc),
then "Sewing your first seam" (very easy to understand and clear colord photos),
"Sewing Supplies" (pins, tape measure, shears, etc. you'll need for your projects),
and "Special products" (batting, twill tape, etc.) the explanation on how these products work, what to use it for and you get a photo so you'll know what to look for in the shop,
"Fabric information"
"Cutting decorator fabrics"
"Matching designs"
"Hand stitches"
Then finaly the "Sewing projects" which includes 20 home decor projects; scarf swags, few kind of valances, window coverings, placemats and napkins, tablecoth, cushions, seat covers, fleece throw, different kind of pillows, pillow cases, shams, duvet cover, shower curtain. Great looking projects! While you learn you make a lots of nice and useful stuff for your home.

Beginner Knowledge.......2007-05-12
So far seems to be a good basic book for the beginner
Great book! Excellent for a beginner both in sewing and quilting!.......2007-03-18
I first bought Sewing 101 by the same publisher and was impressed by the easy-to-read and follow directions as well as the patterns at the end. This book gave me confidence to try different types of project. I highly recommend it!
Great Choice........2007-01-18
I have sewn for years but I have never quilted. I picked up a lot of new tips and techniques from this book. I highly recommend it to any one.
Quilting 101: A beginners guide to quilting.......2007-01-04
This book was helpful on a limited basis, but covered too little to be of value after your first project. If you have a basic knowledge of sewing techniques, much of it is unnecessary.
Perfect for Beginners.......2006-11-28
Got this book for my wife, who hadn't really sewn much before she decided to try quilting. This book walks you through the basics of how to sew, then gives great advice on how to start quilting... washing and ironing the fabric, how to sew large sections to save time, etc. Great book for starters. There are lots of patterns in here, but only one "quilt", the rest are smaller projects to get you started -- so if you're looking for a book with a bunch of quilt patterns, this isn't it. However, this is a great book for anyone just getting into quilting.
Book Description
The most practical book that all gardeners have been waiting for, this fun and informative guide shows how to make the best compost using ingredients that are easily found around the house.
Book Description
From Canada’s leading garden expert comes a unique and practical step-by-step guide to creating the garden of your dreams.
With her inimitable charm and boundless knowledge, noted gardener and author Marjorie Harris establishes the template for creating the garden that is right for your tiny urban plot, barren suburban tract, overgrown meadow, condo roof or balcony. Packed with practical advice, helpful sidebars and attractive photographs, How to Make a Garden takes you through Marjorie’s seven essential steps to garden-making – the culmination of twenty-five years of her experience.
Gardening is all about balance: creating shady patches and hot spots, combining exuberant jungles and tailored edges, making social areas and solitary spaces, planting tall trees and delicate groundcovers. To craft a living mosaic requires contemplation and planning: Marjorie calls this unique and necessary step “pregardening.” Once you’ve tackled this thoughtful stage,
How to Make a Garden shows you how to create a solid soil foundation for your plantings, establish just the right garden style for you and your site, draw a garden map, select the perfect plants with the indispensable plant list, plant them correctly, and maintain the health and vibrancy of your garden. Marjorie understands all the pitfalls and anxieties gardeners experience, and she counters them with clear-headed, lively advice that is never intimidating and always creative.
How to Make a Garden is essential and inspiring reading for every gardener and would-be gardener.
“This book is for people who are baffled by empty spaces, cowed by weeds and longing to have something gorgeous to look at. It’s also for people who have lovely gardens but need to be reminded of the basics – the core ideas that make a garden truly successful.”

Excellent summary of Jekyll's work on gardens.......1997-08-15
This book has become my bedtime reading material. It offers an excellent summary of Jekyll's views on color, plant selection, the layout of beds and the philosophy of the garden. While I would have liked detailed drawings or layouts of the various gardens discussed, her written descriptions feed the imagination. I've already laid out a new garden border as a result of the insights gained, and I am inspired to read other works by Jekyll and others

Alphabetical Reference.......2005-04-28
This book is a collection of short articles on garden plants, pests, and diseases. The articles are organized in alphabetical order. Each of the plant articles begins with a short description, and then goes on to include information about planting (when, where, how), germination, care, harvesting, storing, pests and diseases, as well as tips for the kitchen and garden. In general, these articles use only the common names for the plants, and scientific names are not included. The pest articles (mainly about insects, but there are also some articles about pesky mammals and birds), are generally shorter, and include a description of the problem, how to recognize it, and how to combat it (organically). There are also a few articles on such topics as mulches and composting. Arkin includes a wide range of herbs as well as garden vegetables and fruits, and she includes notes on companion planting in the tips sections of the plants articles. The book also includes a chart of when to plant where (in the continental United States), and a garden glossary. There are decorative collage-type illustrations at the beginning of each letter of the alphabet, but no utilitarian diagrams or drawings.
Good beginner gardening book.......2000-06-22
This book is a collection of articles on commonly grown vegetables, herbs and fruits. Nothing in here for the gardening pro, except some good storage and cooking tips.
a great book for beginning gardeners.......1998-02-13
The Essential Kitchen Gardener is a must have book for beginning gardeners and gardeners who have had bad experiences in the past. It contains a wealth of information about when, where and how to grow vegetables and herbs; along with great information on the pests and diseases that attack our gardens. What I liked most was the information about harvesting, storing, and using each vegetable and herb!!

With its humble title, The Essential Gardener might be dismissed without a glance as a smattering of rudimentary information on the simplest gardening techniques. But make no mistake--this is a gardening tome worthy of even an experienced green thumb's attention. In the introduction, Derek Fell writes, "This book represents a compendium of the most important plants for North American gardens, with an emphasis on those that are relatively carefree, easy to obtain, and most likely to add the strongest visual interest to your landscape." Originally published as a six-part series, The Essential Gardener is presented here under one rather hefty cover. In the straightforward manner that characterizes the entire book, Fell breaks the general subject into seven specific categories: annuals, perennials, bulbs, trees, shrubs, herbs, and vegetables; with a special section specifically dedicated to roses. The thorough text is accompanied by hundreds of handsome color photographs (taken by the author himself) and easily interpreted illustrations. Fell's writing is logical and thoroughly researched, providing concise information on garden design, soil preparation, plant selection, planting, pruning, harvesting, and general garden maintenance. It would be helpful to find greater information specific to the various geographical zones of the continent, but that's an awful lot of ground to cover, and if this book were any heavier it would require its own wheelbarrow. --George Laney

Must Have Gardening Book for every Gardener.......2007-07-06
I love this book, I buy it for anybody that gardens as a gift. They all love it! I like the pictures they really help if you need to identify plants or just want to browse to get ideas. It also has great plans and ideas for garden planning not to mention everything you need to know about each plant! A must have gardening reference book for every gardener!
Very thorough & covers all the bases!.......2000-06-16
This book covers all the essential herbs, vegetables, fruits, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and bulbs for your garden. Beautiful photos combined with thorough descriptions of each variety provide great inspiration. In addition, the book displays several successful garden layout options. A summary at the end of each section recommends plants by numerous categories: shade lovers, moisture lovers, blue flowers, pink flowers, etc. Other than lack of detail in pruning suggestions, the book covers it all!
The Essential Gardener.......2000-02-24
Stellar photography accompanies this comprehensive glossy reference that no gardener should be without. Covers annuals, perrenials, trees and shrubs, and roses. I pour over this wonderful book every day enjoying the beautiful photos and learning what will work for the spots I have in mind. Handy charts organized by color and purpose. If you can only have one reference, make it this one!

Customer Reviews:
Respectful communication..........2006-12-20
This book offers excellent advice for communication between parents and teens. The principles taught in this book are useful for every area of
our busy lives. Basically, it reminds us to think before we speak and to speak to others with respect, the way we would prefer to be spoken to. The book also encourages parents to allow their teens to make choices where appropriate and encourage them to learn how to make their own decisions.
How to Talk So Teens Will Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk.......2006-08-15
The book offered lots of examples that involves changing the way you word things when speaking to your teen with the goal that it will have a more positive affect on conversations with your kids. It's worthwhile in the sense that it gives helpful examples of "conversation starters" to hopefully get the teen talking. But it's no guarantee either that you will get the response you're looking for because the person you're trying to talk to or reason with has their own, seperate agenda. So it's a good starting point rather than a "quick fix" which, when looking at the big picture, should work out a lot better.
How to Talk so Teens Will Listen and Listen so Teens Will Talk.......2006-08-09
Very useful strategies for interacting in a positive way with Teens without compromising either their or your own sense of self. I found it to be very readable and down to earth with plenty of examples and case studies to illustrate real life use of the stratagies. It gives permission to be creative and have fun on the way while maintaining respect for all. Warmly recommend.
Another great book by these 2 wonderful ladies.......2006-07-20
I recentely read this and it really helped me with dealing with issues with my almost teenager, I highly recommend this book.
At last! Skills that work with teenagers!.......2006-03-03
Nineteen years ago I had reached the end of my "motherhood rope". The kids were fighting, whining, manipulating, throwing tantrums... just generally being "kids." But one day it just became way too overwhelming, so I left them home with their dad and escaped to the mall. While in the bookstore I couldn't help but notice an enticing book cover: "How To Talk So Kids Will Listen And Listen So Kids Will Talk." "That'll be the day!" I grunted, but walked across the aisle to page through the book... Inside I noticed what an easy read this book was for busy mothers like myself; cartoons showing me skills such as "Instead of nagging, try saying it with a word!" Interesting! I took the book home and that very skill was the first one I tried ----- and the first of many that worked! (Instead of nagging that we didn't own the electric company because I saw the bathroom light had been left on, I simply said "Lights!" and the kids actually jumped up to shut the light!)
Amazing!! I had to share this wonderful book with my friends at the PTA!! The PTA said "We'll sponsor a workshop if you lead it!" I agreed, and have been leading workshops based on the Faber/Mazlish series successfully for the past nineteen years. The only thing missing was help for the parents of teenagers, but thanks to the authors, that problem is now solved. The positive feedback on this book from parents in my classes has been heartwarming. Unruly, sullen teens were now taking the time to have conversations with their parents, agreeing to accompany families on vacations, cleaning their rooms, and getting haircuts!!! There was no end to the good news I was receiving in my classrooms! Is this book a magic bullet? A miracle cure to the teenage "attitude disease?" Wake up! There are no magic bullets, and anyone who has taken my class will tell you that I don't promise miracles, but I do promise calm. Could you use some "calm" in your home? Thanks to Adele and Elaine's revamping of Dr. Haim Ginott's teachings to fit the teenage years, you can breathe a little easier. Pick up a copy of this book and slowly start incorporating the skills into your home life; you won't be disappointed, I promise.
Isn't it time for you to experience the "calm?"

Easy read, some good ideas.......2007-06-27
This book is an easy read and has some good ideas for the child that falls with one standard deviation on a bell shaped curve. It lacks addressing the special needs adolescent or the child that cannot be reasoned with.
Enjoy this quick read that so effectively helps you achieve the "impossible"--a loving relationship with your teens........2007-05-18
Do you remember how supportive and understanding your parents were during your teenage years? Do you recall how you could confide in them, how they trusted your judgment and how appreciative they were of your help?
For most, the answer is simple--"no!"
Flash forward: Would your own teenagers consider you loving and understanding? Do they confide in you? Do they feel trusted and appreciated by you? And...do you feel loved, understood, trusted and appreciated by your teens?
What gets in the way in the way of "yes" answers to these questions? In this book Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish explore the teenage years and help parents and teens get closer to "yes" answers. They show what goes wrong (e.g., blaming, name-calling, lecturing, playing martyr) and help both parents and teens develop an attitude of earned respect and appreciation for one another. Impossible? Think again--open the pages and hear the stories of parents who have just about given up on their teens--whether it's dealing with sassing, homework, chores, hanging with the "wrong crowd" ...sexual promiscuity, binge drinking, "experimenting with pot" or discovering that your daughter has plans to meet a strange man she's been hooking up with on the internet-- watch how the right attitude and skills dramatically improve life at home.
Enjoy this quick read that so effectively helps you achieve what you might have written off as impossible--a loving relationship with your teens.
great book!.......2007-02-06
This book is easy-to-read, not too long or dense, and full of great ideas of how to relate better to your kid. I recommend it to all parents, even if you think you're doing pretty well already (and especially if you're not!).
