4 out of 5 stars Turtles Today Is Just As Good Today As It Was Yesterday.......2000-09-28

If you're looking for a quick, condensed identification and instructional book on turtles and tortoises, Turtles Today is the book for you. The topics are organized in an easy to understand manner, and there are plenty of pictures to keep even the least attentive reader captive.

Turtles Today is quick and easy reading, covering topics such as feeding, housing, health, breeding, and many others. I especially liked the last two chapters of the book covering the different types of land tortoises and aquatic turtles. Including pictures with each species description was a nice touch. By looking at the cover, you might get the impression that this book is out of date, but most of the information it contains is as true today as it was when it was originally written.

If you are an avid herpetologist, or just a beginning herp lover, this is definitely a book to have on your shelf.

                  5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BOOK.......2007-09-07

THIS BOOK IS VERY COMPLETE. FULL OF WONDERFUL IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS. GREAT JOB EXPLAINING PROCEDURES AND DIRECTIONS AND VERY COLORFUL. I HAVE ENJOYED THE BOOK ENOUGH THAT I ORDERED ANOTHER ONE FOR MY MOTHER.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding says it all.......2007-03-10

This book truly is outstanding. Michele never ceases to amaze me with what she comes up with in her scrapbooking. This is a unique and unusual collection of ideas that is well represented with beautiful photos and a full explanation of the technique used. However, I would say this book is for someone with basic scrapbooking knowledge since it is not written with detailed step by step instructions. The inserts next to each design are more about the inspiration for the pages and the technique used rather than a detailed instruction of that technique. Still, it was not hard to follow in creating these wonders. A great book to have.

4 out of 5 stars Good beginners book for scrapping! Many good ideas and techniques.......2006-11-03

I bought this book because I was getting started in scrapbooking. I have referred to it many times.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful ideas, but................2006-01-23

There are plenty of wonderful ideas in this book. But you must know that there are not step by step instructions. If you need some inspiration, then flip through this book and I'm sure you'll be inspired. Although some might say that it is dated (see review below), I think that there are still plenty of fabulous ideas and creativity in here. I would say that because of the lack of instruction and the fact that there isn't alot of information on scrapbooking supplies that it would be geared more towards the "pro" scrapper or a very adventurous and confident beginner.

2 out of 5 stars Too dated for me!.......2005-03-18

I wish I'd paid more attention to the publication date on this book. I also think the book should be subtitled: "A HISTORY of Scrapbooking and Memory Makers." There were few entries included that were from 2003, and many were from the late 1990's. Scrapbooking has changed so much in the last 8-10 years, and while this book serves as a great reminder of "look how far we've come!" it wasn't what I was looking for. Too many of the layouts featured are very dated. There were a few that I enjoyed, but those I probably already have seen from my years of getting the magazine!

"An engaging mix of the serious and the playful, and Fenton writes with a lightness of touch perfectly suited to the subject." --Alexander Urquhart, The Times Literary Supplement

Forget structure. Forget trees, shrubs, and perennials. As James Fenton writes, "This is not a book about huge projects. It is about thinking your way toward the essential flower garden, by the most traditional of routes: planting some seeds and seeing how they grow."

In this light hearted, instructive, original "game of lists," Fenton selects one hundred plants he would choose to grow from seed. Flowers for color, size, and exotic interest; herbs and meadow flowers; climbing vines, tropical species--Fenton describes readily available varieties, and tells how to acquire and grow them.

Here is a happy, stylish, unpretentious, and thought-provoking gardening book that will beguile and inspire both novice and expert alike.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Poet's Garden.......2004-12-08

The British poet James Fenton has given us here in this slim volume a list of the plants one would grow if one were given a "blank slate of a garden" and "given the stipulation that everything you grow in this garden must be raised by you from seed." Mr. Fenton's definition of a garden is large and encompassing: It "must include a spectacular one that I saw. . . in Manhattan, which consisted of nothing but morning glories grown on a fire escape, high up above the street. . . or a row of hyacinths in glasses" as well as gardens at Versailles. Some of the groups the writer discusses are broken down as to color, size, flowers for cutting, climbers, and what he calls "Flowers That Hop Around." He also lists several books on growing flowers in his "reference library", equipment and the 100 seed list in the end of the book.

This book is obviously not a treatise on growing flowers. You'll need to refer to other books unless you have a lot of experience. (I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by all this information until I'm told that Mr. Fenton has a fulltime gardener.) Additionally, there are no color photographs here of the various varieties. Mr. Fenton's list is highly subjective. He tells us why he eliminates some flowers and includes others; there are no cottage pinks, for example, because they all have been either bought or given to him as plants.

What I was hoping for in this book I didn't find-- that the writer might somehow tie up poetry and flowers. He certainly didn't have to, but he does make interesting asides on occasion. He opines that one can tell from his photographs that Robert Mapplethorpe "loved flowers" but that we wouldn't have expected him to like plants. And in discussing false bishop's weed, Mr. Fenton intimates that all bishops are false!

You have to tip your hat to a poet who gardens. This little book would make an ideal and unusual gift for your favorite gardener.

                    4 out of 5 stars Pleasant.......2004-05-22

This is a pleasant little book; basically a series of essays on the writer?s one hundred favourite plants that can quite easily be purchased and grown from seed.

I enjoyed the personal approach to gardening and plants, and also the relaxed random-ness of it. The snobbery of design and planning, of garden bones and vistas, does not hold this writer in thrall. He knows and loves plants, and he wrote these essays about them.

In truth there isn?t much substance here, but it makes a pleasing, quick read, and the book would make a nice little gift for a friend.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable approach to gardening annuals.......2003-12-10

James Fenton makes the case for annuals in your garden, which are typically overlooked in gardening writing that concentrates on perennials. This book, which lists 100 of the author's favorite plants to grow from seed, should be read with a plant encyclopedia at hand like as 'Sunset Western Garden', so that you can see what the plants look like and what their care requirements are. Many self-sowing varieties are included, which may convince those looking for a low-maintainence garden that annuals can play a part in it. Color and appeal is emphasized, much like what would have attracted you if you had a chance to garden as a child. The author's garden is in the south of England, which may limit whether his choices are appropriate for your climate.

This is an essentially British book, filled with charming photos of bungalows surrounded by a riot of annual flowers. These old-fashioned annuals are the rangy, colorful, sweetly scented flowers that evoke nostalgia for a grandma's garden that most of us never knew, but that we can grow ourselves with the help of this book. Everything old is new again: many of the flowers here, like castor oil bean, celosia, and abutilon, have been used for decades in traditional British gardens, and they're the hot new annuals of today. Clive Lane gives detailed instructions, complete with drawings, on growing annuals from seed, explaining techniques like pricking out and stratification. What is most unusual and useful about this book are the lengthy lists of annuals for specific situations or with special characteristics; for instance, annual vines to grow for flowers, annuals for fragrance and cutting, and annuals that give at least three months of bloom. Why choose this book from among the many others on annuals? It makes gardening look like sheer, creative delight, with window boxes packed with colorful annuals, front gardens with such a fluff of annuals that it is hard to find the stepping stones, and theme gardens such as "The Edwardian Hot Bed Border." --Valerie Easton

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book that will help you deal with a loved one's death.......2007-02-10

This is really a 10 star book. There's nothing like it.

After my Mom died, in an attempt to make sense of her death and move on with my own life, I read many books on mothers and daughters, grieving, and death. This is the best one I found.

I think Sarah York's Remembering Well will help you if you are struggling to cope with the loss of someone you've loved deeply.
It won't take away your pain, but will help you feel your loss, celebrate your loved one, grieve, mourn, and cope all at the same time. I didn't really think a book could provide such comfort. Buy it. It's a wonderful book!

                                  5 out of 5 stars Memories..........2003-09-12

Death is one of the most traumatic experience in our lives. Even the deaths of strangers affects us in unusual, sometimes unpredictable ways. The death of those close to us, family and friends, can leave us with questions, emotions and emptiness hard to comprehend. Yet, there are ways to deal with these; religion has rituals, families have traditions, cultures have cycles, allowances and expectations, yet we still need more.

This book by Sarah York puts an order to the chaos. Written primarily for those in caring professions (pastors and priests, health-care workers, etc.) or even for those who have expectation for the approaching death of friends or family members, the book can be rewarding to any reader, as death is one of the facts of life we will all face in a myriad of ways.

York infuses her discussions with her personal experiences as well as professional experiences. She talks about the various ways in which religion looks to care for the departed as well as those left behind, in terms of memorials, committals, and other services. She also looks at the emotional and relationship aspects, both when family and friends are close-knit as well as when there are distances and estrangements.

Through stories of people, York teaches and guides by example. She shows the specifics of how to help in the case of a suidice, the death of an infant, a death due to illness, and more. She helps to show how to carve out a space for the family and friends, the wider community, and for the presence of God in the midst of sometimes bewilderingly tragic situations.

The final chapter looks at the 'seasons of grief' -- some religions, such as Judaism, have prescribed patterns or rituals to follow for up to a year after the death; in fact, the death of a person stays with us for the rest of our lives, and the more significant the relationship, the more significant that season can be, and more long-lasting in daily life and functioning. While the specific rituals of Judaism cannot appropriately be used out of context of the community and hold the same meaning, the pattern of activity and the pastoral/psychological way in which they function can be easily adapted.

York offers three sections of resources, which make this book practical and useful. Prayers, readings, blessings, service forms, even the idea for a 'no-memorial wanted' practice serves to stimulate ideas for the creative and meaningful way in which observe and remember.

York's final story in the epilogue is very touching, an almost concrete way of showing how we carry forward those who have passed away in our own lives.

This is a stunning book, thoughtful and sensitive, useful and prayerful. My life has been enriched simply through the reading of this text; it will be even more enriched when the times come that they guide my practices and my experiences.

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for anyone who has to create a funeral.......2003-04-05

Sarah does an amazing job of giving guidelines and suggestions for creating truely meaningful memorials and funerals.

The fact that she is a Unitarian Universalist minister makes the materials in this book appropriate for use by a wide range of religions.

The book is especially helpful to those of us who have no formal clergy training but need to create funerals / memorials.

Having been someone who has done group memorials for individuals of a separate organization with people who have passed on from AIDS, this book give me new insight. I am looking to put together another ceremony in September. Comparing the past events with Rev. York's book, I find that the past events contained many of the elements that she suggests. However, she gives some wonderful insights and ideas that I have not thought of before. I am only about 1/3 of the way through the book I am about ready to change the original structure of the memorial service. All that I can really say is: "Sarah, thank you for your wonderful writing and imput.
