a great book with good information my only complaint would be that it does not cover a wide variety of species.

This book is really great for the person that loves a big book with wonderful color pictures. It's one of those books you can just sit down for hours and look at all the beautiful pictures and detailed information of each tropical fish listed. There's also a detailed illustrated guide on how to set up a home aquarium and a list of common illness and treatments for sick fishes. I highly recommend this book for any aquarium enthusiast!

THE BEST BOOK REFERENCE.......2006-08-14
I HAVE WANTED THIS BOOK SINCE IT WAS PUBLISHED, AND WHEN I COULD
GET IT FROM YOU, I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY. I FIND IT TO BE THE BEST
OF REFERENCE BOOKS AROUND TO DATE. THANK YOU.
Truly exceptional book.......2006-07-27
I enjoyed the book immensly. I read it in one day cover to cover all 900+ pages. Very informative and great pictures of fish. I have been a hobbyist for 20 years and I still learned something from it.
A space filler book .......2006-06-23
The author doesn't even include the temperature to keep the fish.
Disappointing.......2006-03-12
I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.
A Very Good Reference but not Perfect.......2006-03-04
Unlike many previous Tropical Fish books from the Tropical Fish Hobbyist publisher that were not much more that an unorganized child's picture book, this Encyclopedia is well oganized and has a great common name and scientific name index. A desciption of the fish is on the left page with two corresponding pictures on the right page which makes for easy reading. I would rate this book 5 stars if the descriptions were more detailed. It leaves out temperature range, PH range, sexing information, etc. even though there is sufficient room in the description area for about 40% more verbiage. I recommend this book to be used in conjunction with the 4 Volume set of the Baensch Aquarium Atlas which provides much greater detail of each fish species.

Customer Reviews:
Nice reference.......2007-01-10
When I bought this book I had already been in the sw hobby for six years, but for some reason I had to have this book. Needs to be updated, but it offers a great and broad foundation of the hobby. It is easy to read, and has awesome pictures. Also some of the species names were different from what I have seen in most other books. ???
Great Book for Doctors Lobby.......2006-12-16
This is a wonderful book for the lay person to read as they wait to see their doctor. The pictures are lovely. I gave it as a gift to my favorite dermatologist who happens to have a saltwater aquarium on display.
Good Reference Book.......2006-11-03
We've used this book mostly for identification of fish that we didn't recognize at the pet store. The pictures are fantastic and it covers a broad scope of information on setting up the tank, reefs, fish and invertebrates. It gives information on what they eat, who they get along with, and what conditions they prefer. In some cases, however, the directions for caring for a certain type of fish were not as detailed as we would have liked. If you want a general saltwater reference book, this is a great investment. If you're looking for specific, detailed instructions on how to care for different things in your tank, another book might be a good supplement to this one.
Environmental awareness approach for new hobbyists.......2006-03-13
Full of excellent information about the marine bio-sphere. Most of the information is presented in such a way that environmental awareness is passed to the reader, which will be good food-for-thought for any new hobbyists. Crisp & clear photographs are backed by descriptions of marine life, which give a clear understanding of the subjects chosen.
Comprehensive and informative........2006-03-09
This book is a good reference book for fetermining what fish you might want to get down the road. I wouldn't recommend it for your initial tank startup as there are better books for that, but for fish ID and compatibility, it is nice. There are lots of wonderful pictures and overall good information.

Customer Reviews:
Great Photos - But Somewhat Lacking Otherwise.......2001-08-16
With the exception of the first 21 pages, this 127 page book is devoted to some 200 photos of popular fishes. Photos are excellent as are symbol keys related to aquarium requirements. Also has a 4 page listing of common aquarium plants and their needs and suitability. However, with a total of only 8 pages devoted to aquarium set-up, this book is insufficient for the beginner putting together his first aquarium....Overall, a good book to have if you are purchasing it for the photos and related key symbols.
Great basic, easy to read, very well structured book...........1999-08-27
This book has a very comprehensive aquarium setup, filter and maintenance guide. After this section comes info and colored pictures of different kinds of fish, including it's adaptability, breeding info, temperament and the care it requires. All is indexed at the end of the book....The only down side to this book is that if you're interested in only ONE kind of fish, it won't make you an expert....All in all, this is a great book for what it was designed to do: help you decide what fish you want to buy.
Great basic reference book!.......1999-06-18
I enjoyed the fact that every fish is presented in full color. This makes it easier to identify the fishes. Though the most common are listed, these are good ones to start with, and I found this book to be an informative read!
Good, especially the photos. Basic, could be more detailed........1999-04-04
A good book for beginners looking for something to start with. It has good care and basic breeding information of freshwater and a few brackish fish. Photos are excellent.
outstanding, great for both beginner and expert.......1999-02-18
David Alderton's International Encyclopedea of Tropical Fish is an outstanding edition to anyones home library. Not only is it informative on tropical fish alone, it covers everything you would need to know as a beginer and expert in this fascinating hobby. As a collector of chiclids I was excited to learn that they to made a grand appearance in ths wonderful hardcover. Sincerely, John J. Browne

A very informative guide to freshwater fish. Very handy to have when considering adding anythign to your tank.
incomplete information.......2000-06-17
This is a nice book to read if you are mildly interested in bredding tropical fishes. If you really want to do it, you will not find the specific information you may want to have in this book. For example, in breeding Betta Splendens the author suggests water temp and aquarium size. Unforunately, water quality may well be much more important. What is the recommended Ph? Water hardness and other chemical factors if properly reproduced as the fish experiences it in the wild will help in spawning the fish. This kind of lack of information repeats itself throughout the book. Luckily it is out of print so you won't have to suffer...

So, so book, kind of old information.......2006-09-12
This book was published in the 80s, then re-published in the 95. Most of the information is kind of old. It does not have pictures for most of the fish listed.
Another thing I don't like is the lack of common names for the fish. It is one thing to have the proper name, it is another that a big portion of them missing common names. I would say about 60% of the fish listed don't have common names.
I would not spend more than $10 for the book, considering what you get out of it.

Book Description
Early textile dyers signed oaths that they would not reveal any of the process. Fortunately, author Carolyn Dahl openly shares the secrets of dyeing, painting, and patterning beautiful cloth she has gleaned in art schools. This guide is the next best thing to having a master artist in the studio.
Entertaining stories awaken memories of childhood coloring books, leaf prints, iron-on designs, and the tie-dyed T-shirts most of us experienced at some point in our lives. Readers will be inspired as they follow step-by-step photographs and instructions full of hints and secrets for using luminous color to transform white cloth into artistic masterpieces. Connoisseurs of the decorative arts and those who are merely curious about the fabrics they wear and use in everyday life will find much to interest them.
* Produce successful results without an instructor * Author relates own experiences, telling why a technique is done, giving more control to the dyer * Contains lots of fresh ideas
Customer Reviews:
CLEAR and PRECISE.......2007-09-03
I think it is the clarity and precision with which the author presents her ideas. Very good resource material for my daughter. She uses it!
Great Addition to My Fabric Painting Resource Library.......2006-03-30
I've already collected a number of painting/dyeing/surface design books for working with fabric, and this makes an excellent addition. I don't think it could stand alone as the be-all and end-all, but it is comprehensive in the sense that the author presents all kinds of ideas and inspiration, as well as photographs and instructions/resources. The one thing I might have found more helpful would be greater detail in the steps she took to achieve certain results. Although she does offer descriptions, it seems that sometimes steps and/or details of the process are missing.
Explains why.......2006-01-08
This book is particularly strong on explaining the theories behind the different fabric types and why they react as they do to dyes and paints. Some of the instructions are very clear and good photos of stamps and other printing techniques. I found the finished items and cloth a bit messy - not really my style. But a good addition to the library.
Comprehensive.......2005-10-05
This book is wonderfully comprehensive of the latest methods for embellishing with dyes and inks. I would have liked to have seen other artists results with her techniques, but I find the technical information more than compensates.
Wow!.......2005-09-22
I have read many "how to books" that are advertisments for their
products or books bragging about their wonderful artwork but this book tells all! It is very easy to understand and tells
exactly how to get the results wanted. What a refreshing change!

Book Description
There have been huge advances in our ability to diagnose autism and in the development of effective interventions that can change childrenÂ's lives. In this extraordinary book, Lynn Kern Koegel, a leading clinician, researcher, and cofounder of the renowned Autism Research Center at the University of California at Santa Barbara, combines her cutting-edge expertise with the everyday perspectives of Claire LaZebnik, a writer whose experience with a son with autism provides a rare window into the disorder. Together, they draw on the highly effective Âpivotal response approach developed at the center to provide concrete ways of improving the symptoms of autism and the emotional struggles that surround it, while reminding readers never to lose sight of the humor that lurks in the disabilityÂ's quirkiness or the importance of enjoying your child. From the shock of diagnosis to the step-by-step work with verbal communication, social interaction, self- stimulation, meltdowns, fears, and more, the answers are here-in a book that is as warm and nurturing as it is authoritative.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Buy.......2007-09-26
There are books on autism that I recommend that parents and heathcare professionals read. This is one book that I recommend that they don't just read but buy and keep it for future references.
There is such a wealth of info on autism here. If you can only afford to buy one book on autism. Let this be the one.
The authors take a highly optimistic view of treating autism. However, they make no bones about the fact that the treatment process is long, tedious and can even be painful. The first chapter deals with diagnosis and dealing with the initial shock.
From the second chapter onwards, the authors get down to earth with managing the autistic child. They go down to every detail on how to encourage communication. Start from the very simple and basic. Turn sounds into words. Reward, reinforce ...
Next, it's down to breaking the self-stimulating or injury cycle. Introduce replacement behaviour. The authors go into the dos and don'ts for breaking repetitive actions. Why punishment doesn't work for them. There is also a very practical FAQ section that deals with the common concerns and problems faced by parents and care providers.
The following chapters deal with imparting social skills, providing education and family support. There is so much useful info that it's impossible to finish, let alone digest in one reading. Buy this book and keep referring to it as you manage autistic children and see them grow up.
Gives you hope.......2007-09-25
My son was diagnosed with ASD at 2. I read many books and this was my favorite. It was clear, easy to read and most of all it gives you techniques on how to help your child overcome. It gave me hope when I was facing his diagnosis.
Very positive and encouraging!.......2007-06-01
Although I have not purchased this book, I have read a copy that I borrowed from a library.
While the author of this book doesn't guarantee that autistic kids will improve suddenly as soon as their cargivers start giving them the help they need, she talks about how much they can progress eventually if their caregivers give them all the help they need. I really like books that tell us about how much autistic people can progress eventually if they are given every chance to progress as much as they can, and that also give examples of those who have made great progress already, as a result of being given every chance to progress as much as they can. In fact, I really like all books that offer solutions to major problems and/or better alternatives to the status quo!
Treasure Trove of Information.......2007-05-13
This book can be a great addition to the library of people with children who have been diagonosed with autism. It is definately a book with shows a ray of light at the end of what seems to be a dark never ending tunnel.
Renewed Hope.......2007-05-07
I liked this book. After reading a book that smashed all my dreams for my son I read this Overcoming Autism and it renewed my hope for a better future for my son. It's an easy read, light hearted and positive uplifting book

Book Description
This important book, with the intent of helping others, is an anecdotal overview portraying the life of a person afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning and mild form of autism. The author, who had autistic traits as a child, has successfully overcome numerous obstacles to lead a reasonably normal life. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering, and he has occupied himself with construction projects, carpentry and painting. He is now an author and has written several books, among them three science fiction novels, and a novel about an American in Mexico. He travels extensively and enjoys bicycling and hiking.
Various experiences of his life are presented from childhood to the present, and most of them bear certain qualities and characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome. Other important topics and difficulties related to autism are discussed, such as: childhood idiosyncrasies, obsessions and worries, dwelling on subjects, strong convictions, expecting friendships to continue, collecting things, plus other subjects and ideas. There are several anecdotes that point out some bizarre incidents in his life, along with stories that reveal some of the unique and important projects he has accomplished.
Also discussed are possible causes of autism, whether they be from genetic inheritance, out of balance brain chemistries, or even from heavy metals. Some unique and original solutions including insights are also covered. Overcoming Asperger's is all a process as we explore new ideas and concepts.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe the most honest book you are ever likely to read!.......2007-04-08
Every now and then you may be lucky enough to come across a work such as this. It's a very honest, sometimes painfully honest account of one man's struggle to live in a world that is almost too alien to bear. The insights in the journey of overcoming Asperger's Syndrome, sometimes sublime into the spirtual - to the very ordinary, are an inspiration. This is a must read! Whether your interest is professional or just understanding the human condition. You really do feel that you are walking with him, every step of the way.
Climb Every Mountain.......2005-04-23
This book is a rare gem and a recently discovered treasure. In addition to being well written, one can identify with much of what the author has chosen to share. It provides a much needed window with parted curtains into autism/Asperger's (a/A) perceptions and interpretations.
It has been said and evidence appears to support the finding that people on the a/A spectrum learn empathy cognitively as opposed to intuitively. Seeing the view from another person's perspective is challenging for most people, but for those on the a/A spectrum it is all the more so.
This book is one that commands respect; being able to disclose the level of information that is found in this book is nothing short of courageous. It is the voice of hope for those with any form of autism; for professionals and for those personally involved with people on the a/A spectrum. This is a book for everybody! Being able to share these insights and observations made me think of the song "Climb Every Mountain" from "The Sound of Music."
Hats off to this book!
This book has remarkable insight !.......2003-03-26
From a literary point of view, this is by far your best book yet. But from a subject matter point of view, it is just outstanding. It is written well enough that, as I read each of the episodes you relate, I agonized with you as you strove to deal with each. The book is a remarkable insight into the thoughts and personality, even the mind, of someone who looks at the world through a different set of lenses than most of us do.
Cumulatively, the episodes and their outcomes gradually made me realize that something was missing in how you regarded the personnel in each event and how you assessed "blame" for the contretemps that often resulted. It eventually dawned on me that there was very little, if any, empathy for the views and feelings of others in the way you approached these situations. It seemed difficult for you to understand how the other guy or gal might feel about a particular situation. When I mentioned this to other professionals, they told me that the lack of empathy is a major symptom of Asperger's.
However, the overriding feeling I experienced while reading your book was admiration. Time after time, I said to myself, "Man, that took a lot of guts to write that!" Although perhaps therapeutic, writing the book also must have been quite painful. But beyond whatever therapeutic value writing it had for you, think of how invaluable the insight you provide into what it is like to live with Asperger's and ultimately overcome it will be to others with the condition, to family and care-givers, and to medical and psychological professionals working to treat those with Asperger's. You have done a great service, undoubtedly at no small cost to yourself, to all who are involved in any way with this condition and they should be grateful.
Congratulations on a job very well done!

Amazing!.......2007-09-23
Not only did I read Dylan's story, but had the honor to meet Cristen, Joe and Dylan. I am honored to call them friends. Having two children of my own and parents with chronic and continued health problems I read this book and to my amazement the knowledge behind it was amazing. I have adopted a healthy approach to feeding my family and purchase some of the supplements recommended by Cristen and Joe from Mother Necessities.com and my family is healthier. We thank our healthy living to Cristen, Joe and Dylan and look forward to a rewarding life with good and healthy friends and family. This book is AMAZING!
The best "go to" reference I've ever seen about autism, ADD, ADHD and MCS.......2007-09-21
I normally don't write book reviews, yet I found this book the most informative resource I know I will refer to it often, there is even a recipe section! I was astounded to read the experiences of this family and related very much with the experiences (sadly so). However, this book has the potential to change the lives of our children, written in laymans terms and clear examples of how nutrition and healthful and natural environment and living can bring recovery and complete health. This is a must read book by anyone, yet especially parents of children with autism, ADD, ADHD and MCS.
Enlightening.......2007-09-17
I have two 'healthy' children, but Dylan's Story was recommended to me by a colleague who has a teenage daugther with autism. As I listen intently to his stories and pain with raising a child with autism it became evident to me that our medical field needs to investigate more. As a society we should monitor what is approved by the FDA for our children's consumption. Reading Dylan's story made me stop and realize that as a society, dual parents working and raising children, we tend to lean to the easiest and quickest way to put dinner on the table not realizing what we are feeding our children. Not to mention the millions of dollars in advertising for these foods and services that are clearly not healthy choices. We preach to our children not to smoke, drink or do drugs, but we allow our children to each foods that could potentially harm them in other ways. This is not a slam against only fast food, but the FDA approval process for food that is available in our grocery stores. I would recommend this book to any parent who is concerned about what foods their children are eating and truly believe in healthy choices.
I also want to comment that both Cristen and Joe have done something truly wonderful for their son and I hope others read this book and consider what other options are available to you to feed your family.
Easy reading. Sad, but inspirational at the same time.
Not what it seems.......2007-09-14
I've never done a review before, but I felt I needed to for this one. I am the mother of an autistic child. This book is not about autism. It is about allergies. If your child does not suffer any gastro-intenstinal difficulties or allergies, it is not for you. I am not a professional, but I live the life and have done plenty of reading on the subject of autism. I have serious doubts as to whether the child who is the subject of this book was truly autistic to begin with. He had some symptoms, yes, but I have to wonder if all of his "symptoms" were caused by his numerous allergic reactions to so many things.
I do not doubt the difficulties these parents went through with their child. It must have been very difficult for them to see their child in such pain. I can understand their severe bitterness towards the medical field. And I am so happy for them that their child is getting along fine in a regular kindergarten class and is now a typical kid. But they don't seem to understand that allergies and autism are separate. Many children with true autism, like mine, have no allergies. He didn't scream in pain everytime he ate. He didn't have bowel problems, ear infections or any of the other medical problems these people call part of their son's "autism." An official diagnosis of "autism" from a "professional" does not necessarily make it so. Mistakes can happen, and do, all too frequently.
So if you are a parent or loved one looking to help a child diagnosed with autism, be careful. There are so many books, services, medications, etc. that lure desperate families in on false hopes. For all the good intentions that I am sure this mother had, this book will not be helpful at all to the vast majority of families dealing with autism.
Very practical, useful and heartfelt book.......2007-09-07
As a freelance writer and publisher of a weekly marketing email newsletter, Brainy Tidbits, I am often sent books to review. Most of them, quite frankly, do not hold my interest. But Dylan's Story by Cristin and Joe Fergus is an amazing story of one family's journey to learn about and heal their child of autism.
Thankfully, I do not have a child with this problem. I do have a friend whose child has been stricken, however. I have also raised two children with sensitivities to dyes, preservatives and chemicals as well as various food allergies.
This book clearly discusses how to eliminate these toxins from a person's environment and how to move toward a healthier lifestyle that includes whole grains, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables, and organic foodstuffs. Several recipes and numerous resources are included in the book, making it an essential reference book for anyone dealing with food and toxin sensitivities.
It is written in an easy-to-read style and discusses the ordeal these parents went through for almost 6 years before healing their son. I highly recommend this book, especially if you have an autistic child. It may be your way to heal your own child.
