Customer Reviews:
Very interesting.......2007-07-29
This book has a lot of scientific data and an analytical feel to it. The writter put a lot of thought into this book and provided a lot of information not found in most aquarium books. She focuses on low tech tanks which is nice for those of us that don't have a lot of money to invest in equipment but want the look of a planted tank. I recommend this book to anyone that has a low tech tank or is interested in a different perspective on planted tanks.
Practical, yet scientific........2007-03-13
This book can be useful to the layman and has the depth for the pro.
The author clearly knows her subject and has the technical expertise. The biology and chemistry is over my head (it has been a loooong time since taking those classes), but it is actually readable. Some items simply have to be taken on faith if you haven't got the background to fully comprehend everything. In other words, one does not have to understand 'redox equations' to get the content.
I haven't tried her methods yet, but I am intrigued. It goes against most of my library, but she makes a lot of sense.
Other options.......2007-02-21
First of all, I gave "Ecology ..." 4 stars rather 5 as my feeling is that a "Practical Manual" might offer some options in terms of an author's preference. And, being a "Manual," it may also present "Trouble shooting" type of pointers, or "How to find your way back if a different path was selected." I believe the above are areas that could have been addressed in better fashion. However, that said, "Ecology..." is really an excellent source. D. Walstad tackles subjects with both the scientific base as well as personal experience. At times, the scientific base is (for may tastes and background) a little too involved. But, sprinkled throughout, we have questions with answers. I really liked that. I also liked her chapter that basically dealt with "This has worked for me...." The author dispels some myths in terms of natural sunlight and carbon supplementation that generally runs against current trends. What I thought might be improved:
1) A chapter devoted to, "How to rectify a situation without a total breakdown of the aquarium."
2) Options to "Plotting soil"(gardening soil)in the substrate. For those of us who don't feel confident in running off to Wal-Mart for our substrate.
3. More information on filtration; I'm a little skeptical in terms of the plants "Can do it all."
But, compared to the other book also purchased, "Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants," I very much like the author stating in clear terms "This has worked for me." With "Encyclopedia," you need dig to find this information.
GOOD BOOK IF .......2007-02-14
A GOOD BOOK IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE LINGO - I DID NOT. THE BOOK WAS WAY TO TECHNICAL FOR MY POOR BRAIN. I TRIED TO READ IT BUT JUST COULD NOT. I ORDERED THE BOOK BY MISTAKE (AGAIN MY POOR BRAIN). SENT IT BACK AND WAS GIVEN A RAPID REFUND IN ACCORDANCE WITH AMAZON POLICY. I HAVE NO QUARLS ABOUT PAYING THE SHIPPING AND APPRECIATE THE ABILITY TO RETURN AM ITEM WHEN THE ONLY REASON I RECEIVED IT WAS THROUGH MY ERROR. I GIVE THE BOOK AND AMAZON 5 STARS AND MY SELF 1. IF YOU ARE REAL SMART BUY THE BOOK BUT IF YOU ARE JUST "PURTY" SMART LOOK ELSEWHERE.
THANK YOU AMAZON!!!!

This author really knows her stuff!.......2005-11-15
I highly recommend this book because it says it how it is!
Read this book and suddenly nearly all of your queries about freshwater aquarium ecology will be answered! From how aquatic plants purify water to caring for aquatic plants without using elaborate expensive equipment. Although, I am one to think that if people want their plants to flourish and have stable pH and alkalinity levels in their aquarium, they will need to invest in carbon dioxide fertilising with a solenoid valve to allow CO2 to flow when only the lights are on, providing all other growth factors are adequate (like lighting and nutrients).

poor pictures.......2005-09-22
Otherwise the book would be nice, but fishes in the pictures look shocked. They have no color, they have nipped fins and I also saw whitespot. Reader will get bad picture about some species. Can't recommend.
Great for choosing fish.......2004-01-12
I found this book very helpful for choosing which fish to stock my tank with. Helpful lists of water requirements, and a rating on ease of keeping which I found helped me rule out fish that might have been too difficult for a beginner (not always clear with most other reference books I have read). The large pictures of each fish without the background clutter was also very useful as you knew exactly what you were getting and knew what to look for in a good, healthy fish.

Book Description
At the heart of every garden are the plants, which enhance our land and engage our souls. For gardeners, no matter how new or how advanced, whether we cultivate for ourselves or for landscaping clients, plants are the sine qua non. They intrigue us and inspire us. And the more we learn about them, the more they add to our pleasure in gardening. For all of these reasons, every gardener needs a good plant encyclopedia. And, as the only plant encyclopedia written exclusively for North American gardeners, Taylor's Encyclopedia of Garden Plants will be as useful twenty years from now as it is today. If a plant can't be grown on this continent, you won't find it here. Readers will use this book in a number of ways: as a resource for identifying plants, as a guide to purchasing the best species and cultivars for particular gardening locations and growing conditions, and as an important way to save the cost and disappointment of buying plants that won't thrive or will overwhelm a garden. Choosing just the right tree or shrub can add the crowning touch to your landscape plan. Here you'll find expert information about more than a thousand species of trees, shrubs, roses, bulbs, perennials, annuals, and ground covers. Illustrated with 1,200 color photos and hundreds of line drawings, the encyclopedia includes instructions on how to grow the plants and even on how to propagate many of them. An extensive glossary and a common name index make this book accessible to beginners as well as longtime gardeners. Like gardening itself, Taylor's Encyclopedia of Garden Plants will bring its readers immediate pleasure as well as long-term rewards.

Taylor's Encyclopedia of Garden Plants: The Most Authoritative Guide to the Best Flowers, Trees, and Shrubs ..........2007-01-03
Excellent! No gardener should be without it. I have yet to have a plant not listed in this book. It is a large book, but worth it. Beautiful photos. Money well spent!
This is a great book -- but not a quick reference.......2005-04-07
You must read well into the description of a plant to find out if it's shade or sun lover. It's not something you can quickly discern.
Also missing is the distance needed between plants which is so helpful when developing a bed and purchasing more than one of each kind.
GREAT.......2004-07-01
I use this book to look up plants, all the time. It tells you about anything you want to know about flowers, trees, shrubs, etc.
Plants,WOW!!!!.......2003-11-27
This encyclopedia of plants tells you about any plant you ever heard of. If you read this whole book you will know everything and I mean everything about every kind of plant. Every plant will be in your head like white on rice. This is the book you want to read for any kind of plant project. I prefer this book to ANYONE.

Encyclopedia of North American Trees.......2007-01-17
It was a gift for a coworker. I was able to look through it and was quite pleased.
Okay Tree Book.......2000-06-19
Arranged alphabetically, this tree book gives usable information on 278 North American tree species. Although filled with color photographs, the pictures are somewhat small and sometimes lacking sharpness. It would have been more useful to have larger photographs with more clarity and detail. Still a good overall resource and reference book.

Ruth Yaron cares deeply about what your baby is eating--so much so that her bestselling Super Baby Food is encyclopedic in both scope and size. Ounce for hefty ounce, this manual/cookbook/reference guide is worth its weight in formula, packed as it is with detailed information on homemade baby food, nutritional data, feeding schedules, cooking techniques, recipes, and other invaluable feeding tips. Yaron builds her compelling argument for making baby food at home on the simple premise that food profoundly impacts health, especially when an infant's developing digestive tract is involved. Parents will learn why babies should start out on rice porridge, bananas, avocados, and sweet potatoes before advancing to more difficult-to-digest foods such as wheat cereals and milk products. While Yaron's passionate stance and vegetarian bias may turn off some parents, others will be grateful for her strict attention to potentially harmful additives and chemicals. No matter what their eating philosophy, most parents will appreciate the economy and surprising ease of making baby food at home. This is not gourmet cooking; all you have to do is learn how to boil water and operate a blender. For veggies, simply steam some vegetable chunks and blend. For baby porridge, just grind some whole grains in a blender and boil. It's that simple. And when you're feeding your baby, simple is best. --Sumi Hahn

Customer Reviews:
great.......2007-09-09
Excellent book, teaches you everything you wanted to know about baby food and more! In the back of the book it gives you recipes for making your own cleaning products that are safe around the baby. I actually started to make them.
Very helpful but not stand alone handbook.......2007-09-04
My husband bought this book before our son was born, with the idea that it would be nice to make our own baby food. I resisted, but as our son reached his 5-month birthday, the questions of what and how to feed him became more pressing and I picked the book up. At first, I found it totally overwhelming. The book is poorly organized and, although Yaron says it's possible to flip to certain sections first, it's really not, since a lot of the information needed to understand and apply the advice in one chapter is contained in different chapters. So I ended up reading the book cover to cover and now often use the index to look up specific information. Using the book in this way, I've found it very helpful and sometimes even inspiring. I have now made and frozen a lot of veggies and have started our baby on some solid food. It is tremendously satisfying to know exactly what he is eating, how it was prepared, and why I am feeding this food instead of (or with) that one. I have also since read _Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health_ and found that with the exception of _Feeding Your Child's_ recommendations on fiber, the two books complement each other well. _Super Baby_ offers recipes and guidelines on feeding, while _Feeding Your Child_ gives nutritional background and approaches to dealing with picky eaters, etc. That said, as other reviewers mention, parents with allergies (or any concern about developing allergies in their children) should evaluate Yaron's guidelines on dairy, nuts, seeds, and soy carefully. In addition, she doesn't address the issue of home cooking high nitrate foods (carrots, beets, spinach, etc.) before eight months, another health concern, so parents using this book will need to research this themselves (_Feeding Your Child_ offers some helpful guidance). Overall, this is an extremely useful resource, but not a stand alone book on feeding your super baby or super toddler.
Super Baby Food is super info.......2007-09-04
I haven't had the time to read it through yet. But so far it's got the level to details that I want to follow. Still a bit intimidated, but am taking baby steps (ie, clearing out space in my freezer for the ice cube trays for freezing baby food) to do this for my baby.
Great book.......2007-08-31
I am only in the beginning of the feeding process but this is a great resource. I think that what you feed your child is just as important as the valves you teach them. By exposing them to the right foods from the beginning you create a lifelong habit. This book really walks you through the process and it appears to be simple enough that everyone can do it. I would highly recommend using this book!
Toooooo much advice.......2007-08-29
Sorry but this book just had way to much advice for me. All I was looking for were some quick, healthy ideas to make my baby some food at home and I ended up with the "mother" of all textbooks. Seriously if I read one more "tip" or "warning" from her I just don't know what I'll do....
