Book Description
The Pawprints of History shines a new light on a favorite subject -- the relationship between humans and their four-legged best friends. Stanley Coren, a renowned expert on dog-human interactions, has combed the annals of history and found captivating stories of how dogs have lent a helping paw and influenced the actions, decisions, and fates of well-known figures from every era and throughout the world.
As history's great figures strut across the stage, Coren guides us from the wings, adoringly picking out the canine cameos and giving every dog of distinction its day. In this unparalleled chronicle, we see how Florence Nightingale's chance encounter with a wounded dog changed her life by leading her to the vocation of nursing. We learn why Dr. Freud's Chow Chow attended all of his therapy sessions and how the life of the Fifth Dalai Lama was saved by a dog who shared his bed. Dogs have even found their way to the battlefield -- great military leaders such as Robert the Bruce and Omar Bradley have shared their lives, exploits, and gunfire with dogs. From Wagner, who admitted that one of the arias in the opera Siegfried was "written" by one of his dogs, to the dogs that inspired and lived with Presidents Lincoln, Roosevelt, Johnson, and Clinton, these loving canines do double duty as loyal pets and creative muses.
From war to art, across the spectrum of human endeavor and achievement, there often stands, not only at his side but leading the way, man's beloved "best friend." For those who believe that behind every great person is a good dog, the uplifting stories in The Pawprints of History will be a lasting delight.

Dog Lovers Unite!.......2006-10-08
This book is more a bon bon than anything substantial. But if you like dogs, you'll find this book a hoot. The premise is simple: dogs have had an impact on history.
The book commences with a chapter on dogs as sentinels. Thereafter, we read stories of the role of dogs in the lives of people as varied as Saint Patrick, Sigmund Freud, Richard Wagner, Charles I, Alexander Graham Bell, George Washington, Sir Walter Scott, Frederick the Great, Christopher Columbus, George Armstrong Custer, and so on.
In the last chapter, the author asks the question (page 291): "If dogs have had such an influence on human culture and history, it is quite reasonable to ask, why is it that we don't see canine contributions cited in standard political, social, and cultural histories?" The author provides no definitive answer, but his book is a lot of fun to read. Dog lovers will enjoy seeing "The Pawprints of History." One caution: There are a number of very bad factual errors in the chapter on General George Custer; this at least raises in my mind the accuracy of historical accounts elsewhere. But this is still an enchanting book.
Pawprints of History.......2006-07-26
This is an excellent and well-researched book describing how humans and dogs have interacted through history. It includes a wealth of interesting information about both individual and societal attitudes towards dogs and how those attitudes impacted events. Although the book is about the role of dogs in history, the stories humanize historical events by showing how compassion towards or fear of dogs affected individual people and societies. Great book.
The book is amazing.......2005-10-14
Dogs are my passion, in this wonderfully written book I've found that I am in GREAT company. It was well written, some of the stories could have been shorter. But it made me laugh and cry, and after almost every chapter I was amazed at what I didn't know about the people in the chapter. The research was extensive for this book. So if you love dogs and you love history you will really love this book.
A charming view of some wonderful friendships.......2004-02-12
This interesting book discusses the relationships between several noteable people and their dogs. At least one cynical Washington D.C. politician said that "if you want someone to love you in this town, buy a dog," and you will find he was not the first one to conjure up that thought. The author shows how people such as Florence Nightingale, Frederick the Great, Robert Burns, and Sigmund Freud were all warmly touched by the positive side of their dogs. These people, who somehow seemed so intensely boring in History class, never seemed so human as when interacting with their dogs. Dogs have served as companions for many others who needed a consistent friend, and they often served as inspirations for those who enriched our artistic and aesthetic lives (perhaps because they were so cheerful and so honest). Oh, by the way, the author gives us some pretty interesting lessons in history and the arts, too, so this story is not just about the canids. If you are looking for a good book to curl up with, and read to, your animal companions, give this one a try.
Eh........2003-07-10
Entertaining anecdotes, but not really what it promises. It's more a collection of famous people and their beloved dogs with a few notes (some of them are real stretches) about how the author believes the dogs might have affected them. Not particularly convincing, but sweet.

Beautiful Anthology.......2005-03-24
There comes a time in every dog owner's life when you look down at the furball by your feet and come to the realization that this is no longer just your pet; this is your friend. Dogs surpass human beings in just about everything: from sense of smell to hearing, from loyalty to love. A dog's capacity to love is something profound; they want nothing more than to be accepted, to please you and to be loved in return. "Angel Pawprints" showcases some beautiful poems about this love which dogs have for centuries offered and received. Laurel E. Hunt edited some great pieces, including works by such famous poets as Rudyard Kipling and William Wordsworth. (My personal favorite is "So Long, Pal" by Ethel Blumann.)
One does not by any means have to have lost a canine companion to enjoy the works presented in this book. If you have ever loved a dog so selflessly, unconditionally, and faithfully, then all of these pet memorials will speak to you, even if you cannot comprehend the depth of the poets' pain. If you have lost a good friend in the past, this book could possibly be a fine method of therapy to help you feel better about everything. (It helped me when my friend of 12 years died.) "Angel Pawprints: Reflections on Loving and Losing a Canine Companion" is, in a nutshell, just a really great way of honoring your dog's memory and love. It may cause some tears but it'll get you through.
i love this book.......2003-04-05
i have just bought a second copy to send to a friend who needs to say farewell to her beloved jack russell for awhile. the poems are beautiful...i especially love "the house dog's grave", which just might be my favorite poem of all time.
i use this book frequently to quote passages for friends who have lost their dogs...and i cannot read it without crying. it's very comforting to know that people have felt the same way about their dogs over many years......beautiful, beautiful!
What a Wonderful Book.......2002-11-10
I know Dr. Villalobos from working at the animal clinic in Hermosa Beach, CA, and she does a wonderful job of capturing the bond between pets and their owners in this book. She is such a hardworker and her love for animals is apparent through her work in the oncology field.
Treasure Book.......2002-06-03
I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost a beloved pet, or as a gift to someone who has. If you want to show you care without saying a word, give this book. In the privacy of their grief they will read this book and know that you understand what they are going through. Even more, they will know that many many people have come before us who have gone through the same hell.
To love a dog is to change your life forever!.......2002-04-03
Dog lovers will enjoy this book, and will also enjoy "August Magic" and "Heart of the Savannah" by Veronica Anne Starbuck. These two must-reads will be treasured additions to your canine library!

Paw prints On My Heart.......2005-11-08
This beautifully illustrated collection of stories about companion animals was a wonderful reminder of all the past and present animal companions with whom I have been blessed to share my life. I especially liked the bios of the many authors which were slanted toward their relationships with the animals in their stories. I have bought more than one of Keating's books to give as gifts because Pawprints On My Heart is appropriate for such a wide range of ages and friends.

Charming and personal stories, a great antidote to stress. The perfect book to dip into at bedtime as a guarantee of sweet dreams.

Insightful, captivating glimpses of life. Once I began reading"Pawprints," I found it hard to stop. A respite from an increasingly cold and technocratic world.
Relaxation For A Pressured Psyche.......2000-03-01
After you get a massage for your body, a cool drink for your thirst, pick up a book that has an upbeat point of view and will delight and relax you as did your massage and lemonade. What a treat to find a book that makes you feel good without guilt provoking how to's, offers some smiles and the point of view of an obvious animal lover without saccharine anthropomorphism.

Book Description
PAWPRINTS OVER BROADWAY (Lyons)
William Berloni
The colorful memoirs of Broadway’s only animal trainer and his famous dogs, too
William Berloni and his company have spent the past thirty years training dogs and cats for Broadway productions, primarily using animals rescued from shelters. As a high schooler in 1976, Berloni had rescued an Airedale mixed breed only hours before it was slated for euthanasia. The terrier was cast as Sandy in the musical Annie and performed there for seven years. The bulldog currently starring in Legally Blonde and her bulldog understudy were rescued from Newark and from North Carolina.
Berloni’s story is completely engaging as he talks about being the first to train actors to work with animals on stage, his love for mutts over purebreds, as well as the four-acre animal retirement compound where he lives. With photos throughout this delightful book, we learn details about how his dogs are trained and how they react to Broadway life, his work with animals on television and in movies, and his own personal rise to fame. An enchanting writer (whose first book, Doga, has sold more than 350,000 copies for Chronicle) with an inspiring story for animal lovers, theatergoers, and anyone who loved books such as Marley & Me.
William Berloni’s company now has several trainers who work with animals. Berloni has a graduate degree in theater. He and his wife, Dorothy, run a retirement compound for animals in Middlesex County, Connecticut.

disappointing.......2007-10-10
This book is for advanced knitters. I have knitted lots of items, but I found this book much too confusing for me. Too much referring back, to the print, while making the sweater. I probably will never use this book
knit sweaters.......2007-09-02
excellent book, easy to use. I love the spiral binding. I am sure I will get a lot of use out of this one.
Fantastic book!.......2007-08-26
This book has EVERYTHING you need to make your own design. It takes the guesswork out & lets you indulge your creative side.
Very useful.......2007-07-05
I'm glad I've found a book like this and hope to get sleeves right from now on!!! A bit confusing at first glance but once you understand the tables it becomes very useful.
A must have!!!
I love to make my own patterns.......2007-04-28
I've always found it difficult to make my own patterns in knitting (crochet makes more sense in my brain), but I love to get a picture of what I want and be able to create it. This book allows me to do that. It basically does the math for me! This is a great way to figure out how to make the sweater you designed in another size, so you can make it as a gift for someone who is another size.
Book Description
Origami meets the age-old art of swaddling in Baby-Gami and no longer does baby wrapping have to be an intimidating undertaking. Easy-to-follow instructions illustrated with step-by-step diagrams and unbearably cute photographs make it a cinch to execute flawless wraps. The first part of the book offers a variety of cocoon-like styles for newborns; the second shows parents how to create slings for "wearing" older babies. Once new parents master the basic swaddles and slings, they can branch out into more pizazzy terrain. Try the Picnic Wrap, the Glamour Sling, or the satin and tulle Gift Wrap. With advice from experts and real parents, tips on baby-carrying, baby-soothing, and a rundown of items not to wrap your baby in, Baby-Gami is a must-have for any new parent.

ADORABLE!!.......2007-07-31
This is such a sweet, cute, unique book for new mommies. I often buy it as part of a shower gift. There are very clever ways to wrap your baby if you ever get in a jam such as a paper bag or in a map. The babies are adorable too!
poor babywearing section.......2007-05-26
Yardages are completely wrong for babywearing. I wasted $$ buying a pieced of fabric that was too short to make the wrap described in the book. I had to rebuy...so instead of of a DIY less expensive wrap, I might as well have bought a commercial one. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT
Cute pix and cute for swaddling ... but very bad babywearing section.......2007-02-10
As a seasoned babywearer and leader of a babywearing group, I was hoping to find in the babywearing section of this book some simple baby wrapping techniques that I could share with friends by giving this book as a shower gift. Unfortunately, the babywearing section is bad enough that I simply cannot give the book as a gift.
The instructions for the "front sling," "back sling," "office sling," "'your ad here' sling," "french sling," and "housework sling" are all fatally flawed because they say that these "slings" can be accomplished with 5 to 6 feet of fabric. No one -- NO ONE -- can accomplish these "slings" with that little fabric ... not even my 5-year-old daughter could carry a baby doll with that little fabric. I'm an average size 8 and need at least 4.1 meters of fabric for these tying positions ... and I can get away with 4.1 meters because I'm a seasoned wrapper and am skilled at getting the fabric tight; beginner wrappers my size usually prefer even more length to work with. Also, the pictures all show the babies facing outward in the "back sling," which is an unnatural and uncomfortable position for both the baby and the person carrying the baby. The "hip hugger sling" directions are also seriously flawed, stating that this position can be accomplished with 3 to 6 feet of fabric ... I can do this with no less than 5 feet of fabric. Also, the picture showing the "hip hugger sling" shows the baby leaning way out away from the person carrying her ... which is not just uncomfortable for everybody but is also plain dangerous. The photo of the "twice-the-fun sling" shows one of the twins in a very unsafe position. Instead of sitting in the sling with her bottom lower than her knees and with the fabric pulled up to the back of her legs, the baby is almost standing against the side of the person carrying her with the fabric barely covering her bottom. One good jiggle and out she would go!
Because of these (and other) serious flaws in the babywearing section of the book, I simply cannot recommend this otherwise cute book to anyone. If a person got the book and was interested in doing any of the "slings" shown in it, the person might just throw in the towel, or baby blanket, or whatever, and completely give up on babywearing. That would be a shame, because with good instructions, carrying a baby in a simple piece of cloth is safe, comfortable, beautiful, and easy ... and is an excellent tool in any parent's toolbox.
Adorable photos and humor, not substance.......2007-01-26
The first half of the book is adorable and the different wraps are well illustrated and explained. They are basically the same wrap many ways. I would NOT recommend this book as anything but a fun little gift with some useful info.
The author gives sling directions that do not work with the length of fabric given and the directions she writes! I defy anyone to use an unaltered length of 4- 6 feet of fabric and criss-cross it around your body to make the slings shown. Even with 12 feet of fabric, I had a hard time getting the thing tied and the baby put in there. If you are into baby-wearing and want a nice gift for your preggo friends, I suggest a Moby Wrap rather than this book!
Become a Bionic Wrapper Mom!.......2006-09-13
A friend recently gave me this book. I thought I was doing pretty well with swaddling - sorting more and more things out as I went along. Then I gave this book just a quick read, and the next swaddle I did was a million times better. It also has lots of fun little tidbits about the benes of swaddling and "baby wearing." Not to mention really adorable pix.
