How the Manx Cat lost its tail.......2007-01-19
This is a great book for kids, as well as owners of Manx cats! The stories are great, although i wish it had more about the actual manx cats. From the title, i assumed that it would have more about the cat, but it is mostly Manx island fables put together.
My mom loved the book and i was very happy with my purchase! Would recommend this book to anyone who has a manx and would like to know more about its homeland.

Manx Cats: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Groom.......2004-02-21
This book gave good general info on cats, but not much, in particular, for Manx's. I was looking for details on their elimination problems due to lack of tail, and how to deal with it as far as special diets, etc. But, the possibility of elimination problems weren't even addressed in this book.
Manx Cats Review.......1999-12-16
Karen Commings has thoroughly researched and compiled an excellent "owner's manual" for the first-time Manx owner. Through contacting breeders and asking health, behaviour, and care questions, she has prepared a book which any Manx breeder (of which I am one) is confident to give to a new kitten purchaser and feel good about it. Despite an unfortunate photo mixup with one picture, Karen's book contains accurate and dependable information about the breed. Anyone considering buying a Manx or who has already purchased one will find the book informative and fun (did I mention, it's also a good read!).
Wonderful, accurate (for a change) writing........1999-09-27
I have bred and shown Manx cats for the past 11 years and this is the only book that I know of that is completely factual about the breed. There is a lot of printed matter on the breed which is either misleading or downright wrong. This book gives a new owner or prospective owner a good idea of what to expect from a Manx cat. The pictures are not up to the standard of the writing (one picture is of a Japenese Bobtail), but that certainly doesn't ruin the book. It is not so expensive that it is prohibitive as a research source while being attractive enough to add to your library of cat books. I think it is a book that all Manx owners could benefit from owning and I recommend it to anyone who adopts one of my kittens/cats.
Most accurate book about Manx cats, yet.......1999-05-26
This is one of the most factual books about Manx I've found. Very accurate and helpful. Great book and a great value.

Marco the Manx is shipwrecked & lands in Alaska........1999-07-22
The third in the Marco series. Marco's ship goes down on a reef, the cat gets ashore but runs into hostile bears and has trouble finding food. He is found and adopted by native children. A rich source of Alaskan lore, including totem stories. Very popular with children AND adults, has been on Alaska ferry systems, home school choice for Alaska, etc.

Product Description
by The Editors of Klutz Incredibly simple-to-make tissue paper flowers that look good enough to fool bees. This book of super-clean instructions comes with 75 sheets of brilliantly colored tissue paper, a variety of green pipe cleaners (for stems), and some heavy cardstock templates for those purist who know the difference between a stamen and a sepal and want to add those finishing touches. Because pipe cleaners have pokey ends, we do not recommend this title for the under-eight crowd.
Customer Reviews:
great crafts book.......2007-09-04
I'm a teacher and find this book really good giving proper instructions for making tissue paper flowers.
Clear Directions, Pretty Results!.......2007-06-08
I bought this book to make paper flowers with my daughter for her pre-K classmates, as a graduation gift. She really enjoyed helping make them. They really came out cute. They are a lot more work than I anticipated when looking through the book (about 45 min per flower).
Good for Home and School.......2007-04-05
I used an easy flower project with my 3rd grade class and it was a hit.
I also enjoy making tissue paper flowers for gift tops and just to give people paper bouquets to cheer them up. Projects are easy to follow and creative.
Tissue paper and pipe cleaners included.

We loved this!! The flowers look great!! We spent the whole weekend trying all the patterns with every paper we could find in the house!! Fun!!
Only wish they had plastic instead of the paper patterns. It would make the flowers easier to cut and the fun last longer.

Great book my girls had their friends over the very night they got the book and started to make flowers etc to decorate their presants at birthdays and other events.

I love this book.......2007-01-28
This book has become my favorite cookbook over the years. Everything I have made from this book has been delicious and there are staple recipes from here that I make every week. Most impressive to me is the fact that the recipes are ultra healthy in addition to being delicious. There are many raw salad and cole slaw recipes that have no added oil. By far, the best vegetarian cookbook I've ever used.
An outstanding book with a flair for flavor!.......1998-07-10
I have over fifty cookbooks and yet this is one I turn to most consistently. This cookbook is for everyone who believes that vegetarian cooking lacks flavor. The recipes all rely on whole, natural foods instead of canned or processed foods. The variety is outstanding and I have yet to make a dish that disappoints. The authors tend to build on a repertoire of sauces, fillings etc., so the ingredients you made for Sun. night dinner can also lend themselves to Wed. night dinner. The meals are easy, and most can be assembled quickly. Most importantly, the recipes allow your tastebuds to truly discern each ingredient and enjoy it for its contribution. Take a look at the authors' pictures on the back - these folks are very much senior citizens, yet, they are the epitome of health. Buy this cookbook, enjoy flavorful vegetarian food that will also contribute to your well-being.

A magical book for the young.......2007-05-12
I used to read this when I was a child (it was published in 1920),and loved it so much that I saved it to read to my children, who have still saved my original copy. They read it to their children, who also delighted in it, and now I just sent a reprint copy from Amazon as a gift to a granddaughter, who loves rereading it, and knowing she now has a copy of her very own to keep. Three generations, all entranced by the same tale.
Chlidhood Revisited.......2006-04-09
What a wonderful surprise to find that The Garden of the Plynck has been reprinted! I am glad that someone finally recognized what a treasure this book is. It seems this magical book is practically unknown, and if my mother's account is correct, I may know part of the reason. When my mother was young, her mother (my grandmother) used to bring in a little extra cash by reviewing children's books. She was sent a copy of the Garden of the Plynck, and gave it a very unflattering review, saying it had too many big words for children. (Perhaps she was afraid that children would be misled or confused by the leading character's creative interpretations of the long words.)
My grandmother would have done much better to have written her review AFTER she passed it down to her daughter, (my mother,) who loved big words, and absolutely fell in love with the story. She read it and reread it, and shared it with her friends, who did likewise. Perhaps as a result of the bad review, she never saw another copy of it, so she hung onto hers to share first with children and then with grandchildren.
The book demonstrates the valuable skill of "going inside your head to play," that is, amusing yourself with nothing more than your own imagination. So to whet your imagination, here is a snipit from one of my favorite scenes:
"Sara at first thought [the Plynck] had said, 'Run for your life,' and had indeed taken two-elevenths of a step; but when she realized that the Plynck had said, 'Sit down for your life,' she sat down precisely where she was, as if Jimmy had pulled the chair out from under her, on the very ice-cream brick her feet stood on. She realized that in a crisis like this obedience was the only safe thing."
My mother would be pleased to know that the book survived her mother's bad review and has at last been reprinted so other children can be charmed by it.
Search for the Plynck.......2005-07-18
Thank you Jon. Actually Ted Sturgeon wrote another editorial about this book for "Worlds of Fantasy", Spring 1971, which he called "Search for the Plynck". Here are a couple of extracts:
"...I can probably never recall all the books which lit in me the special flame of fantasy, but one I do remember, vividly and with love. I owe that book a great deal in a great many coins. And I have lost it and want it back.
"It's called 'The Garden of the Plynck'. It was published in 1924 by the Yale University Press and it was written by one Karl(sic!) Baker (if memory serves) about whom I would like to know everything there is to know, because he(sic!) must have been--and, I do hope is--a truly lovely person. I mentioned this book in a column I did for IF back in '62 and I want to mention it again in the context of How To Get Started in Fantasy-or how to give someone else the lifelong gift of enchantment that you and I know so well.
"And I do want it back. I've wracked my brains and written letters and talked on the radio about this book, and no one can find me a copy. Maybe you can. Maybe you know someone who can. I grew up with it, had it read to me, read it myself over and over. When I was twelve and my family moved away, most of our children's books were given to a lady who used to work for us. When I was in my twenties I did one of those sentimental journey numbers, going back to the old school and the old neighborhoods. (Don't do that, by the way. It's seldom worth it. Everything's smaller and falling apart, or replaced by plastic, and full of strangers or, far worse, people you know who don't remember you.) However, there was one great blaze of glory: the daughter of that aforementioned lady still had some of the books, among them my beloved Plynck, which she gave to me.
"And about five years ago it disappeared again. It got borrowed or it fell into a wastepaper basket or something--who knows?--but I hold it as an article of faith that it has not permanently disappeared from my life. Some of my children have read it and love it as I do, but some have not, and that can't be tolerated..."
"...Now, I've got to find the Plynck again. I want it for myself, of course, and for the children, but I also want you to be able to go into the Garden. If anyone knows where a copy of the book might be, or has an idea of a place to go to look for it that I haven't thought of yet, please let me know. In return I promise to do everything in my power to get some publisher to reprint it, complete with its perfect illustrations, which are as right for this book as the ones in Alice and the Pooh books and 'The Wind in the Willows'.
"Please. This world of ours has developed a Plynck-sized vacuum which desperately needs to be filled, to make it a better place."
This would seem to confirm that he never knew/met Karle Wilson Baker (he not only get's her name wrong, he seems unaware she was a woman. Like you, Jon, I've been searching for this book for many years; if I ever find a copy* I'd seak permission from her estate to scan and re-publish it online as a tribute to both Karle and Ted!
(* Actually I have seen copies on ABE from time-to-time, but they've always been priced way too high)
A Rare Bird Indeed.......2005-04-17
Shortly after moving to Vancouver from Toronto in 1989, I found a well-read copy of a 1972 anthology entitled, "The Worlds of Theodore Sturgeon." In his editorial-introduction, "From Plynck to Planck" (C.1962) Sturgeon sets forth answering reader Kirsten Eaves, who poses the question, 'Perhaps if you can spare the time you can write out a more complete recommended reading list than you include in your stories.'
Ted said, 'I am delighted to be able to mention some of the books which my characters have found influential, and my character as well. Some of them fall into the class of Books That Nobody Has Read But Me, Or So It Seems. It's hard to love 'em so much and find them unknown. Others actually do have a certain small readership. There's Wells' Time Machine, Dunsany's The Charwoman's Shadow, Pangborn's A Mirror for Observers, Arthur Eddison's The Worm Ouroborous, Hudson's Green Mansions, Guy Endore's The Werewolf of Paris, Wylie's Finnley Wren and Chap.13 of The Disappearance, Muriel Spark's Memento Mori, William Morris' Golden Wings, De Quincy's The English Mail-Coach, Karle Wilson Baker's The Garden of the Plynck . . . these aren't all, by any means, but I've reached the one I wanted to talk about
'I have NEVER met anyone who has read the Plynck. It was published by Yale University Press in 1920. It is, if you like, a children's book . . . which, if you like, Alice in Wonderland also is. A series of adventures of a little girl called Sara who has learned to "go inside her head and shut the doors," it deals with the Garden she finds there, and all its wonders.
'Something--and I honestly don't know what--keeps the book from being impossibly cute. To this day I find it full of lovely twists and surprises. There's a curly path just inside the doors...' etc. etc. Sturgeon then goes on to mention Avrillia. "Never was another fairy so wan and wild and beautiful," who informs Sara that she writes her poems on rose-leaves, petals, and then throws them over the marble balustrade down into the Nothing with the hope that some might stick to the sides and "somebody a hundred years from now may come along and notice one of my poems; and then I shall be Immortal."
Ted finishes, 'Now, you either dig this or you don't. Me, I never write my congressman or try a new kind of story or argue with a jingoist but I get a flash of Avrillia leaning raptly over the balustrade . . . and go inside my mind and shut the doors is something I completely understand . . . and outer space, and hydrogen transformations, and Planck's Constant, live there along with the Schlorge at the dimplesmithy--in a world of things to marvel at, which need not necessarily be understood.'
Beautiful!
His use of the word NEVER jumped at me, and I considered it a personal challenge to locate this unknown treasure. I mean, I was NEVER going to meet him, so why not find the man within something he loved. Sporadic haunts over the next few years through second-hand and antiquarian bookstores revealed that none of the experts had ever/even heard of the book, nor the author. Computer illiterate at the time, it didn't occur to me to surf it down that avenue. Barely literate now, I've found that not even Texican booksellers can rustle up a copy.
For a long time I was stuck. I became unstuck while producing a live radio broadcast from the newly opened Vancouver Public Library. For in their computer file, there was one title by Karle Wilson Baker; "The Reindeer's Shoe and Other Stories," a collection of Christmassy goodies. It was listed as a seasonal book, and when the children's librarian returned from the back room, she informed me that it was missing. Another stone unturned. It was weeks before I was contacted by the library that the book had been found.
Besides the wonderful stories that it contained a biographical sketch, and the illustrations were done by the author's daughter, Charlotte. What a fine surprise to discover that Karle was indeed not male, but a woman, and a mother and a teacher. She had been named after an uncle and had added the silent/feminine "e" when she came of age.
I sensed that I was getting closer, because there was information about the biographer inside the front cover. Her name was Pamela Lynn Palmer and she was on the faculty of the Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.
I immediately called long distance information, then the main switchboard at the university to find out whether Ms. Palmer was still on staff. The woman at the other end of the line asked me to "hold" while she connected me with the University librarian, one Pamela Lynn Palmer. With more than a few ums and ahs, I tried to explain my mild obsession with this story that I knew so little about. I read-in some slight hesitancy in her voice as she returned that there was a "circulation copy" that could be obtained through the inter-library loans department at the V.P.L. I thanked her and we bid goodbyes. I'd already written up a letter of introduction regarding my quest, but even after speaking with Pamela, decided to send the letter to Texas. That was mid-March 1996.
Early in April I received a reply:
'Dear Jon,
Did you get hold of The Garden of the
Plynck yet? It was still on the shelf
this morning here. Our interlibrary Loan
Dept. will send books "anywhere in the
world." But I checked with Charlotte
Baker Montgomery (Karle's daughter) this
morning and she says we can photocopy
the book for you. I'm going to send her
the Sturgeon editorial . . .
. . . No there was no known
communication between
Sturgeon and Baker.' . . . . . .
The photocopied version arrived, and an actual first and only (as far as I can tell) edition appeared shortly thereafter. From chapter 8, (also sent by Pamela) of the full-length biography, dealing specifically with the book, I've deduced that there are quite possibly less than 1000 in existence. It may be that some books in the early 20th C. were printed and sold only when orders were received by the publisher.
I also added up that Charlotte must have been in her early 80's, because Karle's dedication reads:
"TO TOMBY AND CHARLOTTE, MY COLLABORATORS, AND TO ALL MOTHERS WHO READ STORIES TO CHILDREN."
Seems she wrote each of the ten chapters for and with her own children and they were read to them upon successive completion.
Feels familiar, eh?
Underneath-- 'COPYRIGHT 1920 BY YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS,'
in my homebound copy, in her hand, it says--
"Copied by permission of
Charlotte Baker Montgomery
1703 North Street Nacogdoches TX 75961
3 - 29 - 96"
Now, back to TS.
I will not make any grandiose claims of "Grokking" or "Bleshing" with him across the expanses of time or spirit world. But in a tender and solefull way,- by being familiar with Sturgeon's ways,- I truly felt I was sharing in his secret mirth, while making headway through all of those "lovely twists and surprises," that Sara finds in the Plynck's garden.

Don't Let the Title Scare You!.......2007-06-08
This book is excellent! You don't even have to wait until your kids are older to read this book. The practical suggestions they give begin with pre school age children, and continue up until your kids are 16 and 17. I highly recommend this book as a must-read for any parent!!

Family psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman and sexuality educator Kathy Flores Bell present A Chicken's Guide To Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex, a straightforward guide for parents and educators about teaching young people about the first period, first nocturnal emission, dating relationships, STDs, molestation, and much more. A Chicken's Guide To Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex offers useful advice in down-to-earth terms concerning what needs to be taught, how to build a bond of trust and support, and how to sound fully credible when promoting abstinence in a culture that is media-soaked with sexual imagery, as well as more basic tips concerning trials of puberty such as proper hair and skin care, oral hygiene, and more. Highly recommended.

I have found Dr. Leman's books on childrearing very useful. Here he teams up with Kathy Bell to help parents build strong relationships with their "tweenagers" so they can effectivly pass on their own values. I especially like the straight talk to parents who fear being hypocrites because they misused their sexuality, and now want to tell their kids "don't do that!"
This book is about so much more than the typical "plumbing lesson." As a sex educator and a parent of seven, myself, I like the hands-on tools Kathy uses to illustrate the "plumbing" aspects, but especially the emotional aspects of sexuality. And she expand that focus to help parents discuss "neck up" issues. (Don't know what those are? Read the book.)
Don't rely on the school or the youth group to form your child's views on sex, marriage, and family life. Be a proactive parent. Read this book if you need a push in that direction. It even has an index of topics, so you can quickly find the pages that discuss what you need to talk about NOW.
I would have liked to have seen a little more on dealing with masturbation. The few pages that cover it don't emphasize enough it's connection to pornography and addidictive behaviors that can destroy relationships. Other than that, excellent, helpful book.
