      Book Description

"Required reading for the beginner in map and compass work, as well as for those interested in serious Orienteering. In simple, clear, concise terms the basics of map and compass work are described and illustrated."
      —George T. Hamilton, Appalachia

This new, enlarged edition of Be Expert with Map & Compass includes everything the beginner needs to know about the increasingly popular sport of Orienteering: understanding map symbols; traveling by map alone, by compass alone, or by map and compass together; finding bearings; sketching maps; and traveling in the wilderness. Other updated sections cover competitive Orienteering, how to join an Orienteering event or organize your own, and useful hints for competitive and wilderness Orienteering. In addition to the revisions throughout, the author has interspersed the text with reminiscences of his more than fifty years of experience with map and compass. Drawing crowds of 25,000 participants at international events, the sport of Orienteering is more popular than ever. The Orienteering world championships were held in the United States for the first time in 1993. For Orienteers and scouts, avid outdoorspeople, and anyone who wants to feel more comfortable in the wilderness, this updated guide is an indispensable reference.

5 out of 5 stars For Your Boy Scout Troupe.......2007-04-10

Learn how to navigate in the woods with this guide to the compass. All boy scouts will love these tips. This is the most comprehensive guide of its kind.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of.......2007-03-20

This is the best book I have found on learning to use the Map and Compass and Orienteering. This book teaches you all you need to learn to be an "Expert". There are many exercises offered to help you teach Orienteering to a group such as your Boy Scout Troop.I bought a couple of other books on the subject before this one. I wished I had purchased this one first as I would not have needed another resource.

      4 out of 5 stars Learning map & compass.......2007-01-25

Very good basic map & compass course. Formal training in the military gave me a good working knowledge and the confidence to use it. This book will help instill those same principles.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction and easy to read.......2006-07-12

This book provides excellent instruction on land navigation. Even if you know nothing of how to use a compass or map when you begin reading, you'll have a good working knowledge by the time you're through with the book. It is well written, easy to understand and even includes a fold-out topographic map in the back (actually, about a third of a topographic map, but it gets the job done). The map allows you to work the exercises found in the book (which are quite helpful). The book was written some time ago and Hjellstrom does focus on the sport of orienteering, but as the entire point of that activity is navigation using a map and compass, I don't see this as a negative. As others have pointed-out he does not cover newer topics such as GPS or altimeters, but if you're buying it to learn to use a map and compass, that really isn't an issue either. This is a well written book that provides solid instruction and is certainly worth the purchase price.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2006-03-24

This is a must read for teens or adults wishing to learn how to read and use maps and compass. From hiking in the nations parks to your local wooded areas, learning what is in this book will make sure you are NEVER lost!

There Are No Children Here, the true story of brothers Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers, ages 11 and 9 at the start, brings home the horror of trying to make it in a violence-ridden public housing project. The boys live in a gang-plagued war zone on Chicago's West Side, literally learning how to dodge bullets the way kids in the suburbs learn to chase baseballs. "If I grow up, I'd like to be a bus driver," says Lafeyette at one point. That's if, not when--spoken with the complete innocence of a child. The book's title comes from a comment made by the brothers' mother as she and author Alex Kotlowitz contemplate the challenges of living in such a hostile environment: "There are no children here," she says. "They've seen too much to be children." This book humanizes the problem of inner-city pathology, makes readers care about Lafeyette and Pharoah more than they may expect to, and offers a sliver of hope buried deep within a world of chaos.

                          Book Description

This is the moving and powerful account of two  remarkable boys struggling to survive in Chicago's  Henry Horner Homes, a public housing complex  disfigured by crime and neglect.

5 out of 5 stars The other America indeed.......2007-09-25

Nice mix of anecdote and historical background on life in inner city America. Excellent insight into the everyday difficulties faced by families and some of the root causes. This book, though almost 20 years old, still has a message that needs to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars a sobering account of the horrendous state of America's impoverished.......2007-07-18

You don't need to look to Africa or the Middle East to find crime and poverty. Millions live in gang-riddled public housing projects, where violence is a fact of life. If these thoughts don't stir your heart, this book will.

5 out of 5 stars impressive work of reserach and great story telling.......2007-04-30

As in his other book, The other side of the River, Alex Kotlowitz proves again what an amazing story teller he is. Kotlowitz spent a couple of years living with and getting to Know Pharaoh and Lafeyette in the Chiacgo housing project, a place where even the police are afraid to go into without back up. The life of these children seems to be written in the stars, everything is planned for them - poverty, delinquency, prison, abuse, drugs and finally death. Regardless of your stand on social (in)equality, wellfare and other government help, it is easy to relate to Kotlowitz' regard for the boys and some of their friends, although most of us are on the "right" side of the law and the more affluent side of society. The poignant story brings to mind the chicken and the egg debate - do people sink into poverty because of inadequate government help or do they have a hand in it? The boys' mother has 8 children, no job and her husband wont provide for them. Why does she continue to have more children? The government built housing for the people, but the housing is substandard, and reinforces the residents' feelings of being left behind, not on society's top priority. Has America given up on these children?
Can't wait for Alex to write an update, 10 years later.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great Reading.......2007-04-07

I was required to read this book for a class and loved it! The story of these boys was so moving. I would recommend this book to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars You MUST read this book.......2007-01-10

This goes out to everyone living in America today.... you have to read this book. I grew up in a small rural town. My only experience of urban life came from movies and rap music. This book made it plainly clear to me that we are sweeping Americas own problems under a rug. Though I feel strongly for the plight of others all over the world, how can we help them when we haven't spent the time and energy that we need to fix our own backyard? We need to invest in our future and it needs to happen now. This book should be required reading in our schools especially with regards to small town schools. These schools tend to "glamorize" urban life and gangs instead of understanding what they are, a means of survival for our scared youth looking for protection and who don't see another way out nor a future for themselves.

                          Book Description

This incredibly insightful book--now translated into seven languages--examines autism from the unique perspective of both a mother and her son with autism. Both Judy and Sean Barron relate their understandings of the events that each have experienced, resulting in a rare insight into the mind of a child with autism.

                          5 out of 5 stars There's a Boy In Here.......2007-09-08

I read this book when my son was diagnosed with autism. The concept looked interesting and what I read opened up the world of autism to me. Sean gave me the idea that I had to get into my son's world and not make him come to mine! And 4 years later, my son is a very high functioning autistic child - it wouldn't have been possible without what I learned from this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book for parents of Autistic children.......2007-06-12

This book is a must read for parents or relatives of Autistic children. I now understand why my 5 year old son does some of the things he does - it makes him feel good, and he does not understand why mom & dad say no. Sean tells you what went through his mind. Read this book, it will help you understand. Pray for a cure......

5 out of 5 stars My most favorite book on the subject!!! .......2007-01-30

I absolutely LOVE this book!!! This is a very personable book that draws you into the Barron story as they share their family struggles and successes, hardships and joys. I love that Judy tells how she interpreted her son's behavior and how that is contrasted by Sean explaining what he was really thinking in his mind. The differences of thought show the confusion that easily happens between parent and child. Of course, each child is different but this does give excellent examples of the complexity of each personality within the autism spectrum. It is extremely important to communicate and try to understand what your child is thinking so that you can help him. It is equally important to be consistent to work through each issue. I love the honesty of Judy's frustration in the circumstance. And I love that Sean trusted his mom enough to share his life with the world. This book also proves the closeness between parent and child, even when their life is in upheaval. I have a nice collection of books on Autism, Fragile X Syndrome, OCD, OD, Asperger's, temperament problems, anger, and other such helps which were written by world-renown doctors and others but this simple book is, by far, the book I most relate to. Did I say that I love this book? It was the only book to give me hope. Whenever I felt I was going to give up, I'd think of this story. I credit this book for my son doing so well and being nearly normal so that people can't tell he is within the autistic/asperger's realm. :-)

5 out of 5 stars The one and only realistic mother's memoir .......2006-07-03

Having reading essentially all memoirs of mothers with kids of the spectrum, I have to say this is the one that really "tells it like it is." Judy Barron pulls no punches on the difficulties of managing her son. Sean, her adult son, provides wonderful insight into what his often maddening behavior meant. Mother and son find tremendous respect for each other's strengths and weaknesses. Truly an inspiring book.

                          5 out of 5 stars Good perspective.......2006-05-11

As an individual with an autism diagnosis, I found this book to be fascinating. I went through many of the same challenges. Both Sean and I had social problems growing up. Sean was diagnosed by medical professionals in the 1960's as being of "dull-normal" intelligence; I was diagnosed in 1987 at age 2 with mental retardation because I was nonverbal and ignored the tester. Both of our mothers stopped trusting what they were told. While our childhoods did also have some major differences, Sean gave a perspective that was easy for me to empathize with.

I too had a rough time socially. I can remember being very young and thinking my mom could read my mind. My parents sent me to private school in order to prevent me from being placed in a special ed class for mentally retarded children. I still had major social problems similar to Sean's, though adolescence was much less socially stressful for me than early-mid childhood because I had more choice of who I could hang out with, more ability to develop my social skills, and less fear of bullying. Being a girl may have had something to do with that as well. I still have strengths and weaknesses; I think GRE tests and my college classes are easy, but job interviews terrify me.

I liked the "outside in" perspective given by Judy Barron because it helped me see the other side of the story. I identified with a lot of the "inside-out" perspective Sean gave; Judy's "outside-in" perspective helped me understand what my family went through. An excellent read.

Neither fact nor fiction, this delightful memoir of a young farm boy in the days before the stock market crash of 1929 and the lean days of the early Thirties is sure to charm you. This tale, told without artifice, is so real you can feel the mud between your toes in the old swimming hole.

5 out of 5 stars Power in Gentleness.......2001-10-19

This is a feel-good gentle read, the story a boy's life from his earliest memory through high school. From Here to There brims with the innocence and resourcefulness of childhood and with ever-so-daily incidents that impress and astound into lessons to be lived by. The unspoken message calls upon the sensitive reader to hold in full knowledge how much power adult example wields in the presence of a child.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting view of a now historic America.......2001-06-18

This is a wonderful little book. It follows the life of a young North Carolina boy in the 1920's and 1930's. This is a very interesting account of that time period in the South. The most interesting part of the book is perhaps the race relations portrayed in this true story. A wonderful read for those interested in Southern history or nostalgia.
