Awesome.......2007-05-07
I got a lot of great ideas for gifts in this book. Well worth the money spent. :)
great non-book ideas for a long-term scrapper.......2007-03-31
I got some great ideas from this book...I have already done a couple of the projects and I have only had it a few months. Let's you "think outside the book"! And is a starting point to helping you think of new ways to display photos. Some of her ideas I wouldn't use but the ones I would are great. She has good details and great pictures so you know what to do.
Great ideas- easy directions- must-have!.......2006-06-25
Lovin' these Donna Downey books- definitely some "out of the box" ideas that can be easily duplicated using Donna's easy to understand directions.... this is more a "paper art/crafting" book-- not so much traditional scrapbooking. Fun stuff.
A Great Book!.......2006-03-11
I have been dazzled by Donna Downey's other books and this one has the same magic power over me. All the creative ideas for displaying photos has me running around the house looking at things in a whole new light. The projects are easy to follow, the photos are beautiful, and as always, Donna's writing is fun to read.
GREAT Buy.......2006-03-08
I bought all three of Donnas books and am so happy. I make custom scrapbooks for a living and am always looking for different elements and designs for my clients albums...not to mention my own. The book is very easy to follow with simple step by step instructions and she gives a list of where to buy all the products she uses. I highly recommend this and the other two books for anyone who is ready to experiment and move away from the regular albums to incorporate the WOW factor on their bookshelf at home!

ha ha ha.......2006-04-28
This book really made me laugh, although I am the most ungenerous cynical person.
laugh out loud.......2005-12-16
I defy anyone to not just love this eccentric tongue-in-cheek look at decorating. It takes interior design and skews it with hilarious results. Clever, original, and only slightly obscene. (And I'm talking about the rooms...!) A great urban gift.
Really, you should buy it........2005-06-01
This is my book so I'm not unbiased in my giving it 5 stars, but disregard the inaccurate Amazon description above. Here's the deal: It's a collection of real online male personal ad photos with the figures obscured, and then my critique of the room's decor behind them. Fight Club author, Chuck Palahniuk included Obscene Interiors in his list of Top Ten Books of the past 10 years - Yay! And Dave Eggers had this to say, "Obscene Interiors is not only a cruelly brilliant idea, but it's executed with great cunning and even some warmth."
From the back cover: A first of its kind collection of online male personal ad photos featuring shockingly explicit amateur decorating action! Lamps, plants, curtains and couches mix it up in this graphic display of aesthetic perversion!
How not to decorate.......2004-06-19
What a hilarious book. Page after page of men who are simply oblivious. These guys have no shame in exposing themselves with a variety of backdrops, ranging from tacky, scary to out and out gross. This is like a book of favorite cartoons - you just keep picking it up.
Can't. Stop. Looking........2004-05-09
What were they thinking?! I mean, I can understand the roguish impulse to shoot naughty pictures of yourself and even to post them on the Internet. I've done it a time or two myself. But those lamps! And that wretched sofa!
This is a delightfully diverting little book. If there's a flaw, it's that it's too short by far. You can't put it down and you can't look away from these decorating disasters so, in the end, you want more, more, more deliciously awful decor to punish your eyes.
Or perhaps I'm just some sort of weird interior design masochist. It's possible.
Book Description
Page after page of gorgeous photos, and a breezy inspirational text, present a variety of creative solutions for how to decorate and display artwork: pair pictures with the right mats, use inventive hanging techniques, try out different wall arrangements, play with combinations of color. Uncertain of what to put up rather than how to do it? Then feast upon the innovative suggestions for creating themed displays, or assembling still lifes that blend pictures with everything from wooden sculptures to childhood memorabilia. Broaden your definition of a "picture" to include such fabulous things as antique game boards, painted china plates, or a key collection. With these ideas as a springboard-and your own imagination in full force-home sweet home will look more beautiful and intimate than ever!

Brilliant ideas for displaying Art and objects.......2004-06-29
This book is clear, creative, and beautiful. It is a wonderfully written how-to book that makes hanging collections seem exciting rather than intimidating. I love the format, which gives "rules" for display closely followed by a section entitled "breaking the rules and getting away with it". The author gives great tips on color, frame types, and the effect of various environments on artwork. I first got this book at the local library, and 2 days later decided I needed to own a copy.
Book Description
For those who would like to add a professional touch to the way their treasured objects are displayed around the home, The Art of Display provides all the answers. The thoughtful positioning of objects - from crockery and glassware to photographs and mementos - can greatly enhance a room, adding personality, interest, and an eye-catching focal point. The Art of Display explores the wealth of display possibilities, showcasing attractive, creative uses of mantelpieces, shelves, bookcases, window sills, tables, cabinets, walls, and floors. Flexible approaches to display are recommended, profiling both single objects and precious collections across a range of interior styles. In addition, practical guidelines are included for hanging pictures, putting up shelves, making frames, renovation, cleaning, and much more.

Beauty AND brains.......2003-06-19
Decor books suffer from a terrible split personality problem. If they have great photos and idea rooms, they often have text that is trifling and badly written, usually with no good advice either. Or, they have good design tips and inspiration, but it's packed into a bad-looking, text-book like tome.
This book is neither. It's a rarity-well-written, full of good ideas, and illustrated with lovely photos. From a wall of common keys that somehow look like art to an inspired table of topiaries, these are easy-to-emulate, high-impact designs.
A section of how-to-tips at the back (a rod with which to hang a kimono on the wall, easy shelving projects) also makes this book a keeper.
Highly recommended for collecters, as well, since The Art of Display has plenty of ideas for dispaying collectibles without cluttering up a space.

Book Description
In recent decades, suburban growth and the decline of industry have left cities throughout Europe and America searching for creative and effective ways to revitalize blighted areas and reclaim underused land. In Grounds for Review, Andrew Theokas examines one particularly exciting tool for reinvigorating urban areas: the garden festival. These festivals, which began in post-war Europe, have been popular throughout the Continent for decades but are just beginning to gain currency in the United States.
A garden festival temporarily transforms a previously derelict area, such as an abandoned factory lot, into a festival of horticulture, combining luxurious landscapes with exhibits and carnival rides. Most garden festivals last about six months--during which time they draw millions of visitors--but the success of the fair itself is only the initial step in a detailed plan for urban improvement. At the conclusion of the festival, funds from its operation are used to transform the grounds once again, this time with an eye toward the long-term use of the land. The enduring result of a successful garden festival is thus the transformation of derelict land into a community asset, such as a new urban park or an affordable housing project.
Theokas considers here fifteen garden festivals--in Europe, England, and the United States--in all their dimensions. He examines the role they play in stimulating urban redevelopment, their effects on the practice of landscape architecture, and the contentious debates over their financing, purposes, and future prospects. This highly illustrated volume will serve as a useful introduction to garden festivals for all those interested in urban planning, horticulture, and the future of cities.

An Uncommon Book.......2004-10-21
I discovered Marriage to a Difficult Man by Elisabeth D. Dodds by accident. I was visiting a provincial Argentine town, and stumbled upon a shelf of books in the house of a friend. Caught by the title I picked up the book to show to my wife, suggesting that she may want to get it for me for Christmas. For some reason I began reading it, and am glad I did.
The story of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards is inseparable from Western Massachusetts. I spent a few years there and knew many of the places well. Northampton, Deerfield, Hatfield, Greenfield, etc. were all part of my travels. It impacted me how the area had changed from the 1740s. The mighty Connecticut River is no longer a travel route; it has given way to Interstate 91. Historic Deerfield still shows how colonial New England lived, and the mass grave nearby shows the reality of Indian massacres. Yet this trip to the past ends where main street does; the driver is met with a modern, though still rural, lifestyle as he drives out onto route 5 and 10. Today many don't realize that the roadside historic markers about the long forgotten King Philip reflect a time when colonists feared for their very survival. The various towns mentioned in the book dot the Pioneer Valley, or America's "First Frontier", where the colonists moved to after settling Boston. It was America's outpost. Now, interestingly enough, Edward's Northampton has become a center for homosexual and lesbian activity, leading one wit to say that the First Frontier is now the Phallic Frontier....
Dodds writes with a novelist's skill in bringing to life the human side of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards. The title is weak as we don't just focus on Sarah, but on her husband, the culture of the times, their children, and the fruits of their life together. The subtitle "The "Uncommon Union of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards" suits the book better. While Edward's weaknesses are probably softened by the writer's affection, her use of primary sources clearly shows that Sarah was a rare, gifted woman, as the book describes. The author's use of the famous study on the offspring of Jukes and Edwards (an online search will explain this to the interested reader) makes Sarah and her husband shine even more. A brief glance at the sources used shows a writer who has entered a time long since past, and has returned bringing it to life. She mentions in the preface that she "contended" with the material; I take that to mean that she spent 10 years lingering in this world, reading all she could, making trips to New England, and then lingered over language to bring it all alive again. She succeeds. While the book is not that common, you probably won't need to meander through the interior of Argentina to find a copy. If you come upon one, I recommend getting it. Why? Because if you love history the book is well worth its price. And if you believe, or want to believe, that two people can make a difference in the world, it will give you hope.
An "Uncommon Union" that affected generations for good.......2001-05-31
Jonathan Edwards was "difficult" only because he was so single minded in his calling to be a preacher. Sarah Edwards was "uncommon" because to support him in his calling she took over the running of their home, their farm and the raising of their ten happy healthy children. Their union was tender and loving through good times and very bad times (for some years this founder of the first American Revival preached to Indians who didn't even understand him). I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a well researched, very readable history of Colonial times, Early American faith, or a beautiful and inspiring marriage.
Book Description
At last the long-awaited reprint of Elisabeth Dodd's 1971 classic on the domestic life of America's most famous theologian, Jonathan Edwards, and his wife Sarah.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic look into Edwards' marriage.......2006-03-26
This is a helpful book for all those who admire Jonathan Edwards. While Dodds is not totally accurate in her assesment of Jonathan and Sarah, this is a great book. This book will help you see that Jonathan was not just a pastor and theologian. He was also a husband and father. Endorsements include the Pipers, Mark Dever, Lig Duncan, Donald Whitney, and others.
