Book Description

In warm, conversational anecdotes taken from his own practice, Kelley - an award-winning columnist for The Thoroughbred Times as well as a practicing vet - writes about horse health care, from fertility to fractures to foot care. Appealing to the ongoing reader fascination with vets' lives and experiences, as well as to horse owners' needs for sound veterinary advice, THE HORSE DOCTOR IS IN is a medical reference without the endless pages of unreadable medical-speak. Sound, browsable, practical, and usable, this book will both be read in armchairs and used in 3 a.m. barn emergencies.

A broad range of equine health issues is covered in four major sections: Disease; Lameness; Breeding and Foaling; and Care and Management (which covers barn safety, stable vices, goats as companion animals, and more). Each chapter uses a true story to set up a health scenario, then flows into a practical discussion of problems, conditions, or diseases. There are chapters on everything from foaling through equine old age, allowing readers to enjoy the pleasure of fine narrative storytelling while learning how to better handle and understand horses. A particularly satisfying benefit of the book is becoming acquainted with a variety of interesting horses and their owners.

5 out of 5 stars Mission Accomplished!.......2003-09-03

This book is exactly what Brent Kelley set out to write: an entertaining, easy to read horse vet book. Its a perfect blend of anecdotes and technical information. His stories and experiences not only make the various equine aliments easier to understand, but more memorable as well. Definitely a "must have" for any horse owners who have ever struggled through books on equine veterinary medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Mixes storytelling with technical information!.......2003-04-08

Finally, a veterinary guide that actually helps a horse owner understand the illness or disease his horse is facing. Dr. Kelley uses to his advantage many actual case stories or studies to help the reader understand technical veterinary terms/diseases. For example, he'll write about a horse he treated for canker/thrush, then he'll go into detail the clinical aspects of canker/thrush. Very interesting read!

Book Description

"The Horse and Buggy Doctor follows no conventional lines. In larger part it is a book rich in anecdotes, a lively and somewhat rough-and-ready depiction of the country physician's experiences in general and Dr. Hertzler's in particular. In part it is descriptive of medical methods of the period."-New York Times "This is almost an autobiography. Certainly it is the complete picture of a man. And the man is worth looking at."-Saturday Review of Literature "An honest and objective self-record that puts on paper one of the most beloved traditions of the past and shows that the fundamental virtues for which the country doctor was cherished have survived into the scientific present, while many not-so-good aspects of sentimental old days have fortunately been left behind."-Books

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking entertainment.......2003-06-18

When I first picked up this book, I was interested in it because it was so old. As I read it, especially the first few chapters about his adventures in elementary school (I teach fourth grade) I was pleased. I feel better about the antics my students have gotten into. The rest of the book is an entertaining, yet infomative first hand account of the growth of the medical profession. We have come a long way. I am looking forward to seeing where we go.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful Read.......2002-08-18

I just finished this book last night. I have an interest in medical history, particularly american. The author gives a detailed insight into early american medicine. He was truely a wonderful man and physician. I am a physician and am surprised how many problems he experienced that are still currently problems in medicine. This book is a must read for anyone interested in early american medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Candid, insightful, with understanding and wisdom.......1999-09-18

This book is excellent for understanding life in the mid to late 1800's, for understanding the speed with which the "practice of medicine" has grown, and growing in honesty with oneself. The humor and joy is the best! And I empathized with the pain and difficulty.

I like the Ben K Green from Wild Cow Tales and 1000 Miles of Mustangin' (one of my favorite books) - funny, low key, and highly descriptive of people and experiences. This book just follows him from call to call, solving mysteries and lacking (for the most part) the sense of humor evidenced in his other books. The Village Horse Doctor reads like Ben is Quincy M.E. without the "charm."

GREEN HAS A BIG COW COUNTRY FOLLOWING. IN OTHER BOOKS HE TELLS OF VIRTUOSO PERFORMANCES IN AUCTION HOUSES, BRUSHY PASTURES, AND SMALL TOWNS WITH FIRST MONDAY HORSE SALES. NOW WE FIND GREEN ALL GROWN UP AND WORKING IN WEST TEXAS AS A VET. WITH LABORATORY EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE DURING WORLD WAR II, HE ANALYSES NOXIOUS WEEDS, FINDS SPECIFICALLY TOXIC SUBSTANCES, AND COMPOUNDS CURES RIGHT THERE. THIS IS PROBABLY NOT POSSIBLE WITH TODAY'S RESOURCES, SO THE ACCOUNTS IN THIS BOOK DO NOT RING TRUE TO ME. I'VE WORKED CATTLE IN A BRUSHY COUNTRY AND I'VE DONE SOME ORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND THE MORE I READ OF GREEN'S DOINGS, THE MORE SKEPTICAL I BECOME. I THINK GREEN MAY HAVE WORKED US TEXAS BOYS THE WAY CARLOS CASTENADA WORKED HIPPIES.

An interesting…chronicle of an expat American veterinarian. Reminiscent of James Herriot, debut author Herbert offers her stories of life as a rural veterinarian. Born and raised in California but now residing in South Australia, she presents countless tales about her career as a horse doctor, as well as observations about life in Australia from the view of an outsider…The author shines brightest when she shares stories of working directly with the horses and, by extension, their owners, expressing her passion and skill, and even her doubts…horse lovers will find much of interest.

We run a guest house that caters to people on horse-riding holidays, and Horse Doctor has been one of the most popular titles on our bookshelves since it came out. Guests who read through the night, but don't get through it all, come round at breakfast and ask, "couldn't we buy this from you?" For that reason, we've even stocked up with extra copies, so that people don't go away unhappy. Mighty absorbing reading for anyone who owns a horse, loves these animals, or just wants to bone up on what goes on when the vet is required. When one of our kids read the book, he said, "if learning stuff in school could be this easy and interesting, I'd have straight A's." You may not be able to hang out your shingle and go into practice treating horses after reading Dr. Herbert's book, but it could just help you stay one jump ahead of the vet with the stories she tells in this very neat book.

I found this book by chance..not in a bookstore...it wasn't recommended. My father was a doctor. While clearing out some bookshelves at home I came across a copy of The Horse and Buggy Doctor. What a great discovery. The book is a great read; light hearted and personal. It's a first person(Arthur Hertzler), insightful, educational look into the life and trials of a doctor in the later 19th and early 20th century. It's not unlike a mystery novel which you can't put down...a page turner! Too many of us, today, take for granted the role of the medical doctor. You might even enjoy this as a "beach" book.

            Book Description

The popularity of beads and beadwork has skyrocketed since the late 1980s. While there are many books on the subject, few direct more than just a passing glance at the art of beadwork from other times and cultures. As a result, today's jewelry enthusiasts are hungry for inspirational images of beadwork from around the world, as well as innovative and highly creative projects for beaded jewelry designs. The Art of Beadwork offers readers a detailed look at the quality, diversity, and stunning artistry of beadwork from ancient Egypt to the new millennium. From tribal Africa to East and South Asia, 17th-century England to 20th-century France, Central Asia to the Middle East and even the Americas and the Carribean, here are 24 exquisite projects inspired by some of the world's great cultures. Rather than merely providing instructions for copying, this remarkable reference demonstrates how to translate one or more of an inspirational piece's characteristics-color, technique, and dimension-into dazzling examples of contemporary jewelry design. Readers will discover how to use these beadwork methods to create impressive beaded necklaces, earrings, pendants, pins, bracelets, hair ornaments, bags, and more through easy-to-follow diagrams and complete instructions. Along with a history of beadwork, lists of materials needed, and a comprehensive appendix of resources, this guide also features resplendent, full-color examples from such noted beadworkers as Flora Book, David Chatt, Sharon Donovan, Kathryn Harris, NanC Meinhardt, Don Pierce, and Laura Shea.

This is an interesting book, filled with history about beading. I do wish Ms Hector had given specific instructions for her "big bead" Japanese beads (shown on the back of the book).

5 out of 5 stars A book to turn the beadworld on its ear!.......2006-04-18

I have been doing beadwork, writing about beadwork, researching beads and beadwork, devoting my master's degree work to beadwork ... everything I have ever done these past 10 years seem to relate to beads ... even vacations with my wife center on going to specific bead stores, collections and museums.

This book is PHENOMENAL! There are things in this book that I could never have dreamed about. The photography, illustrations and explanations for the projects are first rate. Linking them to traditional pieces is brilliant.

This is the one book that will change the face of beadwork to come in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Blending history and an overview of cross-cultural beading traditions with artist profiles and fun projects.......2005-09-06

Beadworkers have traditionally received less volume and detail in their guidebooks than quilters, but the genre is growing and has been enhanced by the addition of Valerie Hector's The Art Of Beadwork: Historic Inspiration, Contemporary Design. Valerie Hector is a famous jewelry designer who invited several artists to use a piece of beadwork from another time or culture as inspiration for creating a new piece: The Art Of Beadwork celebrates this effort, blending history and an overview of cross-cultural beading traditions with artist profiles and fun projects for creating necklaces, earrings, pins and more. With the world as its inspiration, The Art Of Beadwork features inspirational pieces from around the world, with diagrams and easy project notes assuring relative newcomers will be able to duplicate the polished results.

            5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!!!.......2005-07-09

I waited months and months and *months* for this book after seeing the author's work in person and nearly fainting on the spot over her inexpressibly luxurious Xhosa double scallop stitch pieces (technique included in this book). Every few months I'd check on the status, and find out the publication date had been set back, and I thought I'd expire from desire before I got it.

AT LAST it was published, and I pounced -- and OH, *what* a marvelous book it is, and how well worth waiting for!! How wonderful to have the rare book for more advanced beadworkers -- packed with superb diagrams and inspirational photographs and unusual, atypical stitches.

Hector's approach is sort of anthropological; she builds the chapters around traditional/cultural styles of beadwork from around the globe and throughout history, presenting a rich and well-researched context of historical and multicultural example in which she roots the contemporary projects. Each chapter features the work of a different contemporary bead artist, who designed his or her project in response to the historical/cultural inspiration featured in that chapter.

The result is the most novel, juicy and satisfying wide-ranging offering of truly unique beadwork inspiration. That said, it should be noted that it would not serve well as a first "how-to" book for a beginning beader; some of the stitches are rather advanced and I believe would prove frustrating to most beginners. On the other hand, that is exactly what makes this one of my FAVORITE bead books of all! It's so gratifying to find a truly unique set of techniques that have not been presented in a dozen other books. In addition, the marvelous range of photographs, showing both historic and contemporary beadwork from around the world, still make this an unquestionably valuable inspiration book for more novice beaders.

I only wish I could give this gem 6 or 7 stars, and hope all those who are truly enamored of beadwork or textiles, traditional or contemporary, as collectors or artists or just fans, will rush to buy this super, unique book by this very learned and talented artist/author!

5 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD!.......2005-05-19

I received my book 2 days ago. I looked through it and though I'm by no means done going through it, I had to jump in and try the cubic right angle weave. It's so cool!
The great thing about this book is the unusual weaves. Definitely not the same ol' stuff you see all the time. I'm an experienced beader and am always on the lookout for books that are not geared to the beginning beader. This book is really wonderful. As another reviewer said. She presents the possibilites in photos, then gives the general instructions, suggests other design possibilities leaving the rest to your imagination. The instructions given were clear and concise and enough to continue on your own (provided you're not a beginning beader.)
If you're an intermediate to advanced beader looking for new things to try, you've GOT to have this book. Beginning beaders will enjoy seeing the wonderful possibilities that can be viewed in this book but will probably want to get a good handle on weaving techniques before jumping into the projects offered here.
I can't wait to get back to this book and trying some more of the techniques. My upcoming vacation will be filled with hours devoted to this book.
I wasn't familiar with the author before but will definitely be watching for her name from now on.
            GREAT BOOK!

Verrier's earlier book, Rosa Rugosa, convinced many gardeners to abandon their hybrid tea roses for the older roses. Her newest book, Rosa Gallica may do the same thing for another type of rose. Promising silken petals in "crimson, purple, mauve, magenta, and intense pink with a few magnificent pale pinks among the ranks," Verrier says that Rosa gallica and their offspring offer tolerence to shade, delicious fragrances, elegant flowers, and leaves that go all the way down to the bottom of the plant. Verrier details the history of the rose and provides a catalog of descriptions and photographs that begins with Abailard and ends with Zoe.

              Book Description

Beautiful Gallicas are the oldest roses cultivated in Western gardens and are fundamental to the increasingly popular and informal "English cottage" gardening style. Rosa Gallica is the only easily accessible and complete guide to these ancient, romantic roses that are easily grown by all gardeners-novice and experienced alike.

Gallicas are healthy, disease-free, pest-resistant, hardy and surprisingly accommodating. Especially suitable for novices or gardeners short on time. Gallicas are:

Densely-growing and undemanding shrubs, Gallicas do not need special soil and provide attractive year-round ground cover. They are ideal for modern small gardens and also useful as excellent low hedges. Their natural shapes and good color act as a welcome alternative to monotone green shrubs or foundation planting.

Rosa Gallica contains the author's full-color photographs throughout and all the information needed to start growing:

On its own, or with its sister title, Rosa Rugosa, Rosa Gallica is a superior addition to any gardener's book collection.

                    Product Description

A Bundle of Joy for Every Woman Whose Heart Longs to be a Mommy Ten million people each year suffer—often in private shame and pain—because they’ve been told that they can never conceive children of their own as a couple (literally billions of dollars are spent each year on fertility cures); or because they’ve been conditioned to believe that it’s normal to struggle through a painful and difficult pregnancy; or because they fear whether they have what it takes to be affirming, joyful parents. Jackie Mize—who was told it was impossible for her to have a baby and who is now the mother of four beautiful children—provides readers with a supernatural answer. Filled with powerful and intimate scriptural prayers, this little book gives readers a way to come before Father God in faith with issues from having a difficult time getting pregnant to joyfully cradling that precious gift from God in their arms. By taking an expectant mother—or a woman who desperately wants to be expecting—through God’s promises for her and her baby’s future, Prayers and Promises for Supernatural Childbirth is a bundle of joy that delivers hope and encouragement, while chasing away doubts and fears. Specific issues covered in the scriptural prayers include: fulfillment over barrenness; the threat of miscarriage; a joyful delivery day; and dedicating one’s baby to God.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Promise is a Promise.......2007-05-15

It's almost unbelievable to envision painless childbirth, but Ms. Mize's stories are believable. She writes with a candor and rawness that shows us not to think her sappy or sentimental for one moment. She is seeking her Savior with no obstacles. This small book gives the prayers and promises she uses to increase her faith and dares the reader to deepen their own faith.

This is a god send not only does it tell you what the bible says about child birth but before during and after plus you can apply it to other things in life as well.
