Ginny's unique talents in locating sick and injured cats had rendered her numerous appearances in CNN, Animal Planet and major news. Her rescue stories were illustrated by two national best selling books: The Dog who Rescues Cats and the Blessing of the Animals. Ginny passed away on August 25th, 2005.
With the passing of Ginny, her unfinished mission of cat rescuing is continued by her caretaker Philip Gonzalez everyday. A non profit organization, The Ginny Fund, has been established to raise fund for cat rescuing in Long Beach New York.

Today's New York Daily News reported on the passing of Ginny, a/k/a the Mother Theresa of Cats, gone at the age of 17. She succumbed to old age yesterday afternoon on a blanket in Philip Gonzalez's care. As for Ginny's story, this is one of my favorite books. The stories are truly heartwarming and this book was a "gotta have it" purchase. Browsing the pet section in a local bookstore, I found this and it jogged my memory: Ginny's story was familiar to me due to a Reader's Digest article, but what happened next? This book captures all the tails...er, TALES, lol. I will definitely re-read this now. How could a dog love cats she doesn't live with? As a cat person, I've always been intrigued by this. How ironic that such incredible humanity could have come from one of god's furry creatures. Rest in peace, Ginny. Let us hope there are more of you in the world.

I read this book in one afternoon and handed it off to my husband, who could not put it down. I relate to the author in one respect: after having animals all my life, I connected with one cat so profoundly that I have devoted my life and work to alleviating animal suffering and overcoming the devastating problem of pet overpopulation. It's bittersweet. I love animals with a depth that is so satisfying, and enjoy human and animal company more than I ever was able. But I am now so attuned to animal suffering (generally due to human neglect or abuse -- I'm not trying to fight the forces of nature) that it is difficult to focus on anything else. Just read this book. It feels so good!

A continuation of a very sweet story. I have a few stray cats around my home and even though my inside cats aren't as willing to share as Ginny (LOL), I make sure to feed them and give them shelter. I highly recommend this book and also the one that came before it! (Not sure of the exact title).

Not only are the illustrations fantastic in this book, but the issues that are dealt with are done in a way that are sensitive to all sides of the dialogue. Religion is a hard thing to question, especially as a child, and Rosen creates a story that sensitively gets right to the heart of a child's concerns about belief. I believe this book encourages kids to contemplate their faith in a very healthy way. I highly recommend it!
Potentially excellent, but with flaws-.......2001-11-29
There were many admirable things about this book - among them, a likeable and believable child protagonist, good depictions of his relationships with the adults in his life, especially his mom and grandfather, and a plot Jewish children who love animals will easily relate to. In spite of these strengths, the book is seriously flawed. At one point, an adult tells the young boy that a Christian custom has nothing to do with Judaism, "just like Hannukah has nothing to do with Christmas and Passover has nothing to do with Easter". When I read this, I excalimed, "That's a lie! Easter has *everything* to do with Passover!" It also disturbed me that, though the boy approaches the priest as one of the adults he wants to poll (see the previous review for this plot point), he never actually *talks* to this man. He's scared of him, and that's presented as being okay. Up to this point, I had thought the book a fine ecuminical story that I wanted to share with the fifth graders when I visited our local school (I am a librarian). I did not. It struck me that interfaith dialogue could not be advanced by presenting an unfair and inaccurate picture of Christianity. And this could have been - and was, in many ways - such a good book! Mr. Rosen should have had a Catholic or Episcopalian friend read his manuscript and correct factual errors.

the blessing of the animals is a delightful story about a boy and his dog and his predicament regarding the dog's religious affiliation or lack thereof. Does a child's pet take on the religion of the child and family? Or can the pet share another religious affiliation by virtue of the fact that it is indeed an animal and is viewed "differently"? Or does the pet have a religion at all? These are the questions that the boy in the book needs to answer before making a final decision.

I have ordered this book twice. It has great illustrations and paintings to enjoy. I really enjoyed the way that Welleran Poltarnees writes this blessing with the wonderful pictures on each page. I recently gave this to our veterinarian when she saw us through a most difficult time. We lost our most beloved dog and we felt it would be such a beautiful gift in thanking her. It is a book that every dog lover would love to read and have.

An eye opening read................2005-08-27
I bought this book because I went to high school with the author. I never gave a thought at the time to what it must have been like growing up in So. Africa during apartheid. She was "just a foreign exchange student" who happened to come from that part of the world.
From reading her book I saw a whole new side of her and enjoyed every second of reading the book. I would highly recommend it for anyone - it is a great book regardless of whether you know the author or not!

Finally, a Serger Book with Practical Applications.......2007-09-27
I have purchased LOTS of different serger books, all of which teach you how to thread your machine and adjust for a balanced stitch, many of which suggest weird "crafty" applications for sergers -- but this is the first book I've found that tells you how to start incorporating your serger into a variety of basic garment construction: children's wear, underpants, jeans, sweaters -- you name it. The clothing styles in the illustrations are a bit dated, and I wish the book was larger and had color photos rather than line illustrations so as to be easier on the eyes, but the techniques apply just as easily to current fashions. The content of this book more than makes up for the lackluster visual appeal. How to adapt commercial pattern instructions, change sewing order, and techniques for the serger in garment construction, proper threads and needles for different types of fabrics are all covered well. This might not be the ONLY serger book you'll ever need, but it will be a handy reference for any new serger owner or for anyone who has been using their serger just to overcast seam allowances and who wants to learn more.

Sewing machines are a fun way to express yourself and anyone can learn. After you have mastered the basics of sewing it's time to get a serger and really have fun. This book is a great little reminder of all of the things you can do with a serger and the fun you can have with a machine that finishes and even trims your seams.

This book has been helpful in getting started with serging. I have never had a serger before and am just learning. By using the manual from my machine and this book, I am doing OK. Some things I have more difficulty than others and I get bogged down with the instructions in the book. It may just be me or they could be more clear.
Too dated and if you have a decent manual you don't need this book........2006-07-14
The first 8 chapters of this book are in your owners manual. Chapter 1 (what is a serger), Chapter 2 (which one to buy), Chapter 3 (thread and threading), Chapter 4 (cutting your pattern) chapter 5-8(curved seams,securing ends, sewing order and, tension balance) all already in my manual. Chapters 9-20 get a little more interesting but seems a little dated. There are tips on how to make a leotard, stirrup pants and leg warmers. First copyright is from 1985 not its not improved much in the third edition. I would have enjoyed some better pictures too. If you have a decent manual this really isn't the book for you. For me it was too dated and too basic.

Everything you need to know about serging. This book covers everything from the basics to intermediate serging. It even tells you how to thread the machine and about tension settings.

A Jewel of a Book.......2003-09-01
Just when you think there is nothing new in the world of gardening books along comes a book that restores your faith. Marylyn Abbott's "Gardening with Light and Colour" is such a book. Ms Abbott has not one but two world class gardens - at opposite sides of the world. One is a lovly old English garden that she restored and the other is in the highlands of New South Wales, near Sydney, Australia.
The writer stated out gardening in Australia where seasons change abruptly, there are long spells of 30 degree heat and the sunlight is strong and harsh. Given the opportunity to restore an English garden blessed or cursed with the English damp and misty climate she says "I did not even have the sense to be terrified."
Where she found the energy to create and maintain, even with paid staff, TWO such gardens, and write a book I cannot imagine - but I'm glad she did. (Maybe she had nothing to do on the plane flying back and forth.) This is one of those rare boos that delivers exactly what the title promises; in this case how light and colour in two very different locations affect the choices made in landscape design and plant selection.
The writer has organized her material into eight chapters. The first five each feature a colour, or related group of colours and offer ideas on how best to incorporate them. Chapter Six, "A Rainbow Garden" is about potager gardening and working with the colours of vegetables and herbs. The last two chapters, "Light, Shade and Colour" and "Sparkling Light" talk about ways to work with the colours that already exist around the garden - the house walls, the colour of the soil, the foliage of large trees, shady places, winter light and the light reflected from water.
The tone of the book is light and conversational. The writer is knowledgeable without being infallible. She explains some of her mistakes and what she has learned from them so the reader is less likely to spend time energy and money making similar mistakes.
The illustrations are sensational, possibly the best I've seen in a gardening book. Not only are they great photography but they actually relate to he text.
This is a book both to enjoy and to learn from. Buy it for yourself or as a gift for a gardening friend..
Excellent Reference for the Color Challenged!.......2001-07-23
The photography in Gardening With Light & Color by Marylyn Abbot, et al is stunning! Great care is taken with the choice of light (such as time of day) the choice of film - (obviously high quality) and the speed at which the image is taken. Truly, a professional photographer, with an eye for color has collected a beautiful journal of some very well planned and groomed gardens.
The artist has an eye for structure and design.
These gardens actually sing!
Because the writer is so conscious of these design elements- they are depicted in the choice of photographs and discussed within the chapters. The size of the garden is discussed and tips to avoid Dull, dreary gardens are discussed chapter after chapter.
These gardens create a mood which will be very helpful to anyone trying to choose what they want to do with their gardening space.
Another book- that I would NOT PART WITH!

Conjoint Family Therapy is full of good information, however its outline style makes the book difficult to follow. Unlike other Satir books, Conjoint Family Therapy seems targeted only to Psychotherapists. I missed the humor and humanity that characterizes other books by the author.
