Book Description
Since 1994,
The Bat House Builder's Handbook has been the definitive source for bat house information. This new edition has been completely revised to incorporate the latest research on improving the success rates for bat houses. It updates the original bat house plans and includes a new "rocket box" design, along with mounting suggestions, tips for experimentation, frequently asked bat house questions, and information about bats most likely to use bat houses.
Customer Reviews:
Bat House Builder's Handbook.......2007-04-05
My grand daughter's are anxious to get started building! I bought this and the Stokes Guide to Bats. They love the books. Easy to use and with a little help 8 & 10 years-old understand the blueprints.
This Guide Is Worth Buying.......2007-03-14
I was a bit annoyed to open the package from Amazon and see this glorified pamphlet inside. "There goes ten bucks!" I thought. Don't let the size fool you, though. When I opened the booklet and started flipping through, I saw that it really is an excellent guide. It is far superior to anything else I have seen on the subject. I have seen bat houses for sale in my area that do not come close to meeting the well researched guidelines described in this book. Worth buying, definitely. I just wanted to combat the mosquitos in my neighborhood -- now I will likely join the Bat Conservancy and build houses for any friends who ask.
Bat House Builder's Book.......2006-11-06
Lots of good information in here. This book went into detail that I'd never even thought about. Definitely worth a buy if you want a good house that will attract bats.
Good houses, could use variety.......2004-09-28
Maybe I'm too sold on what's marketed as variety.
I agree with what other reviewers have said, that these are good bathouses and the instructions are easy to follow. I just wish there were a little more variety in terms of design.
The book, by the way, over and above the houses does have some reference information on bats including where to put the houses. That was helpful.
If you're into bats, and would like to make your own houses, this is the book I would recommend.
great tool for any bathouse builder.......2004-03-08
This is a very concise and thorough book on how to construct a successful bat house.

Customer Reviews:
Great for the US.......2007-09-18
This is a beautiful book and my 8 year old daughter refers to it occasionally, but I think that because so many of the animals in it are never seen in Sydney, Australia my children aren't really into this book. It hasn't inspired them to get into the garden and look around.
Excellent for getting kids interested in being outdoors.......2007-03-21
My son is 4 and loves all worms and bugs. This book is carried with us everywhere. He knows the names of the bugs and the earthworms habits. I love it that he is interested in something that will expand his mind, make him aware of his environment and keeps him away from the TV! He is still a little too young for squaring off a part of the yard but that could be next year. The illustrations are excellent, it creates a forum for conversation, love of nature and science. Too often our children are caught up in brands and being sold from TV brands and characters that are shallow and offer little to our children. How wonderful to fuel interest in something outdoors and interactive with the world we live in.
Wonderful!.......2007-01-20
This book (and others in the series) is a real treasure. Your kids, and you, are guaranteed to enjoy and make use of this great little book.
...a treasure-trove for the young explorer........1999-08-24
My three children have thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful illustrations, dynamic fact-filled text, and activities given in this book. We love the whole One Small Square series, but because this book has helped solve some mysteries in our own backyard, this one is our favorite! It also served as a great companion to several curricular themes and field trips during the school year.
Wonderful book for this summer when "there's nothing to do!".......1999-04-26
We read this book over and over! My son learns something new every time. The illustrations are numerous and detailed. "Backyard" provides a great springboard for further exploration of the world.

Can She Win It? Yes, She Can!

But can a cat win a dog show?
Customer Reviews:
Dog and cat book.......2004-03-05
Scoop is helping to build Farmer Pickle's barn. He watches Pickle training his dog for a dog show. Scoop decides to enter Pilchard the cat in the dog show. Pilchard first acts like a cat and ignores Scoop's training efforts. But eventually Pilchard comes around in time to share the prize for best in show with Pickle's dog. If your child has a heavy machinery fascination, this book may not satisfy it, since the book is more about dogs and cats than dozers. It has about 600 words.

Great for the expert and novice.......2004-12-29
I have an out of print copy of Helmut Pinter's Labyrinth Fish book, copyrighted 1984 and though I have found it a great source for imformation, it was lacking in some areas...most importantly pictures. Well, this book by Horst Linke more than makes up for what my other reference lacks. There is a picture of every single fish covered...in fact, the author, who appears to have done extensive research in both Asia and Africa, makes it clear that only the rarest speices for which no picture could be provided have been left out. For each species there is a map of orgination, care and breeding information and of course a picture. Better yet, each picture has the scentific name below, so no searching footnotes to be sure what it is you are looking at. Also, if you love Betta's, there's about 30 species covered AGAIN with pictures. I could find nothing negative to say. My interest lies with the Macropodus and Pseudosphromenus species and until reading this reference I had some confusion regarding the some of the different species. I also found it helpful that the author pictures hybrid speices that are common in the aquarium trade.
Highly recommended for the wild betta enthusiast.......2004-10-10
A very well written book that covers the identification, biotopes, general care and breeding of both the bubblenesting as well as the mouthbrooding species of the labyrinth fish in Asia and Africa. Horst Linke had done a lot of research and packed this volume with heaps of good stuff, including photos of more than 80 species of labyrinth fish (including over 30 betta species) and some very informative illustrations of these special fish and their natural habitats. Highly recommended for the wild betta enthusiast who wants to differentiate the Betta coccina from the Betta rutilans, or the Betta bellica from the Betta pugnax.
Labyrinth Fish, The BUbble-Nest Builders.......2001-10-19
I was very pleased to recieve this book. It is clear, easy to read and has pictures of all the different types of Grourami's, Paradise Fish and Beta's and a few other species I did not even know were Labyrinth Fish. It has 175 pages of information and many, many pictures. It is the nicest book I have found yet on Labyrinth Fish. Happy Reading!

Book Description
The crafts scene is thriving as Gens X and Y embrace hobbies (rejected as too middlebrow by their baby boomer parents) in order to create something beautiful, functional, and unique. With its sleek design and edgy tone, Super Crafty is the ultimate hipster’s craft guide, with a wide array of accessible projects suitable for all skill levels. The book offers dozens of projects for the home (Easy Etched Glass), wardrobe (One-Afternoon Skirt), body (Flirty Floral Pasties), family pet (Greta’s Tail Warmer), and more. Organized by genre, each chapter uses a rating system to indicate difficulty, cost of materials, and age-appropriateness. “101” sections offer basic instruction in sewing, working with vinyl, jewelry making, and other crafts. A resource guide helps locate supplies, tools, and further inspiration. The authors also contribute thoughtful pieces on the underlying aspects of craft, from activism to therapy, as well as lighthearted vignettes on crafting disasters and favorite art supplies.
Customer Reviews:
something for everyone!.......2007-10-03
I love this book! I bought it when it first came out and have referred to it many times since. It truly has something for everyone - prefaced with a manifesto! It is conversational and easy to read, and sure to inspire you into crafting something wonderful.
Waste of time.......2007-07-09
Yes, I'm one of those elitist crafters who wouldn't be seen dead in an unfinished converted jeans skirt with a crooked hem - how cute! Yes, I'm one of those superior types who doesn't want to waste time - how did another reviewer put it? - mindlessly whiling away a rainy day! Maybe some people are lucky enough to have time to mindless while away. Mine is precious, and I want lovely stuff to come out of it.
So this book is yet another for the charity pile. Lots of mostly useless dust collectors. Can't even say it pushes recycling as so much of the stuff has to be bought. I wish I could find ONE project I'd like to make in it - at least in Alternacrafts, which is almost on the same level, I did. Problem is, I like things that are useful, attractive, and well finished. I like to recycle and reuse, and do it all the time - but I don't like to make trashy stuff. Oh well.
Forget the craft elitists.......2007-05-20
Forget the craft elitists who have condemned this book as silly, stupid, or worse. Despite the tagline of the book's title, this is an unpretentious book for people who don't take their crafting too seriously. You will not find the next big craft fair seller in this book, but you will find a load of small, fun projects to help you while away the idle hours. Looking for something to do with the kids or scouting troop? You'll find several choice projects in Super Crafty. Looking to mindlessly keep your own fingers nimble on a rainy day? Yes, there are projects galore for that, too. New to crafting? Randomly pick a project and give it a go. The instructions are concise and the materials are minimal, so you are practically guaranteed success as well as near instant gratification. The book itself is well organized, easy to read, and colorful. There isn't much not to like in Super Crafty, unless you're a craft snob.
Super introduction to crafting!.......2006-07-28
While this book is a nice addition to any crafter's library, I think it is especially great for beginners! The projects are accessible and adorable and they provide a great selection for crafty newcomers to dip their toes in - from Shrines 101 to DIY shrinky-dinks. It also shows you how to get started with stuff you probably have around the house, so you dont need to go out and drop a bunch of cash to get creative.
It is also a great book for parents who want to do cool crafts with their kids and are tired of macaroni and popsicle sticks. It is written in a fun style and there are articles throughout the book on other indie craft subjects like art cars and the Church of Craft. Very inspriring!
A Must-Have for your Craft Book Collection.......2006-07-27
If you are a fan of crafty books like Stitch N' Bitch, Get Crafty, Crafty Chica's Art de la Soul, and Bazaar Bizarre, you'll love Super Crafty. Get it now so you can get some projects done for holiday gifts!

Michael Riera is the high school counselor many of us wish we'd had: he's smart, non-judgmental, and respectful of kids. This excellent book is chock full o' advice for parents that sometimes goes against the established grain but makes utter sense. For example, don't give advice even when asked, embrace estrangement (it's part of your teenager's development), and take a demotion and move from "manager" to "consultant." Uncommon Sense is an excellent book for any parent of an older child or teenager.
Book Description
With more than 100,000 copies sold, Michael Riera's UNCOMMON SENSE FOR PARENTS WITH TEENAGERS has ushered countless families through the trying years of adolescence. Offering a fresh interpretation of the teen years, Riera asserts that this period of a child's growth is too often misunderstood as a phase to be dreaded instead of enjoyed. In this fully revised and updated edition, Riera tackles some of the newest issues facing parents and teenstext messaging and the Internet, changing driver's license requirements, fad diets and exerciseand gives a second look to the old standbysalcohol and drugs, academics, sex and dating, sports and extracurricular activities, eating disorders, making friends, single parenting, divorce, and more. Beginning with overviews of the parent-teenager relationship, the adolescent world, and high school, the bulk of the book comprises a series of responses to questions commonly asked by parents. Based on his 19 years as a teacher, counselor, dean of students, and parent, Riera recommends some unexpectedand ultimately successfulapproaches, like "Communicate indirectly," "Let your teenager brood," and "Resist giving advice, even when your teenager asks for it." With a rare appreciation for this special developmental stage of life and an unpatronizing approach to teenagers, UNCOMMON SENSE FOR PARENTS WITH TEENAGERS is a beacon of optimism and hope for confused and wearied families everywhere.

Helpful guide to living with teens.......2007-03-12
This book provided excellent parenting ideas for teens. My teen is more open with my husband and I after utilizing some of the techniques outlined.
Book review.......2007-01-17
Good common sense suggestions. Referred by family therapist and was worth the read.
Prefer Developing Capable People.......2004-02-29
I would highly recommend: Positive Discipline for Teenagers: Empowering Your Teens and Yourself Through Kind and Firm Parenting by Ed.D. Jane Nelsen (Author), Lynn Lott (Author) ISBN 076152181X before this book. (Or any other in the Positive Discipline / Developing Capable People Series by Jane Nelson and H. Stephen Glenn)
Making sense of it all.......2000-06-16
Most of us spend our entire adult life trying to figure out our own childhood, so it's no wonder that raising a child can seem confusing, challenging and at times scary. This book saved me. It taught me (or at least reminded me) that all teenagers go through enormous physical, psychological and social change in the high school years. While the specific behaviors will vary from child to child, there is a common thread running through it all -- and it makes sense. This book reassured me that my child wasn't abnormal, that I was right in being confused and sometimes appalled by their behavior. And it let me take a step back and not take it so personally. After reading this book, I bought a dozen copies to give to friends and business associates who were struggling with teenagers (or soon would be). Read this and both you and your child will benefit.
Uncommon Understanding!.......1999-11-21
From a teenager who has read more than his fair share of parenting books, this one tops them off. On average, this book covers exactly what these types of books should. It doesn't just tell the parent to "talk more" with their teenager, it actually goes in depth about how the teenager thinks and feels. And, for the first time in my experience, it actually gets close! If you have teens, you should have this book.
