Book Description
Meet Nola the Magician, an otter too curious for her own good, who performs a Houdini-like disappearance; Carolina and Dakota, two bear pranksters who always steal the show; Wilma the bald eagle who fiercely guards her precious wooden egg; and Heidi the deer, who always makes a pest of herself at feeding time. Readers will love Kodiak and Yonahlossee, two feisty bear cubs who aren't near as cuddly as they seem; Squeak the cougar who loves his bungee rope and despises Milton the Bear; Milton the Bear, a costume animal who dances throughout the habitat drawing children like the Pied Piper; and L.L. Cool J., a tiny fawn that grows up to run the Bear and Cougar Gauntlet. Many more animals are waiting to be discovered in The Animals of Grandfather Mountain.

A treasure for zookeepers.......2003-10-22
This book is fun to read. For those who work with animals everyday, it hits home and brings numerous smiles. The kids will hardly believe these stories are true!
A wonderfully illustrated collection.......2002-01-04
In The Animals Of Grandfather Mountain, wildlife biologist and animal habitat manager Laurie Jakobsen showcases a wonderfully illustrated collection of engaging and informative stories about the boisterous bear cubs, inquisitive deer, secretive cougars, playful otters, chattering eagles, and others who live in the Grandfather Mountain wildlife habitats of North Carolina. The Animals Of Grandfather Mountain is wonderful reading for children of all ages and an enthusiastically recommended addition to school and community library wildlife reference collections and reading lists.
animals of grandfather mountain.......2001-12-31
This is a wonderful book for the young and the young at heart who are interested in animals and love to laugh and learn.
Book Brings Wild Animals to Life.......2001-12-01
Reading "The Animals of Grandfather Mountain" was great fun from start to finish. I laughed out loud at some of Jakobsen's stories about day to day life running a wild animal habitat. Everyone, young and old, enjoys watching our furry friends while strolling through zoos. But this book shows you the behind-the-scenes work that makes such experiences possible. But perhaps the biggest treat the books gives readers is insight into the great personalities these animals have. The photographs make the book even more fun. I recommend this book to children and anyone who loves animals, whether they have visited Grandfather Mountain or not.

A fabulous book.......2004-01-19
I read this for a book report at school, and I loved it! Silver dreams of getting a dog for her thirteenth birthday, because she has been lonely ever since her parents and baby sister died in a car accident. But her grandfather, who she now lives with, tells her that she'll get a dog over his dead body. I won't tell the end, but it has a good ending-so read this book!
Great story loved the "power of love and faith" theme!.......2001-11-30
Great somewhat Christian book. Silver is like every 12 year old girl (i know being one myself)except without the makeup and boys outlook (yes finally!). All Silver wants is a dog I remember before I got one wanting one soooo bad!. Won't tell the end but loved it anyway!!!!!!
My daughter's favorite book........1998-04-07
My daughter Kristen loved reading this book. We even purchased a copy from the publisher to give to Kristen last Christmas. Kristen would love to write to Linda High about Hound Heaven. Does the author have an e-mail address? Or, if Linda High reads this message could you please contact Kristen at mygirlkns@aol.com. Thank you.
It is about Silver,Dud,Rose and Silver's determanation & dog.......1998-03-08
I think Rose is like a barbie & as for Dud, he is part of the interesting part of the story. Silver is the one who makes the story seem real. Without Silver I don't think I whould have read the whole story.Linda, you are a excelent writer. I love this book. I am buying this book.I love it. Most books don't seem as real as you make them sound. Jennifer -10

Book Description
Over 50 million people in America knit. The average knitter spends between $500 and $1,700 a year on yarn, patterns, needles, and books. No longer just a fad or a hobby, knitting has advanced to a lifestyle.
Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter moves beyond instructions and patterns into the purest elements of knitting: obsession, frustration, reflection, and fun. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's humorous and poignant essays find humor in knitting an enormous afghan that requires a whopping 30 balls of wool, having a husband with size 13 feet who loves to wear hand-knit socks, and earns her "yarn harlot" title with her love of any new yarn-she'll quickly drop an old project for the fresh saucy look of a new interesting yarn.
Since the upsurge in knitting began in the early '90s, the number of women under 45 who knit has doubled. Knitting is no longer a hobby for just grandmothers-women and men of all ages are embracing this art. Describing its allure is best left to Stephanie who explains: "It is a well-known fact that knitting is a sparkling form of entertainment, as spiritual as yoga, as relaxing as a massage, and as funny as Erma Bombeck trapped in a PTA meeting."

Knitters Unite!.......2007-10-07
This book will make you laugh out loud if you are a Knitter (that's a knitter with a capital K) or know someone who is a Knitter. Great comic relief for those of us who like to knit and use fibers as a hobby. You will see yourself or friends in each chapter. A great book to read as Stephanie knows how to describe our hobby fun in ways that are sure to make you smile and laugh. Enjoy!
Unexpected.......2007-09-13
I expected a good fun read, I didn't expect that it would be good enough to move me to tears in places. This author has a wonderful voice and I will be getting more of her books.
It really is okay to be crazy about knitting.......2007-08-30
This is a great book because it encourages all of us to not take ourselves so seriously. It is okay to laugh. I never knew there was knitting humor until I started reading Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. I love reading her books because 1) she is crazy about yarn, 2) her stash makes mine look way too small, and 3) after the laughs, I might just pick up a tip or two about knitting.
So funny.......2007-08-11
This book is ABOUT knitting stories..not a book of patterns. I laughed out loud so many times while reading it. This is my favorite book of her's. Get it you'll laugh too.
Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter.......2007-07-09
Really well written and funny. Since I am knitter with similar passions as well, I could relate to Stephanie's quirky obsessions. A very enjoyable read!

Book Description
First published in 1939 and long out of print, this beautifully imaginative book is a classic of nature writing. Tracing the evolution of plant life from the appearance of the earliest micro-organisms to the rise of the modern floras, the book is part natural history, part biography, and part philosophical reflection.
Book Description
The Chengjiang biota is one of the most remarkable fossil discoveries ever made. Among the hills and lakes of Yunnan Province, South China, deposits of ancient mudstone, 525 million years old, have yielded a spectacular variety of exquisitely preserved fossils that record the early diversification of animal life. Since the discovery of the first specimens in 1984, many thousands of fossils have been collected, exceptionally preserving not just the shells and carapaces of the animals, but also their soft tissues in fine detail. This special preservation has produced fossils of rare beauty; they are also of outstanding scientific importance as sources of evidence about the origins of the animal groups that have sustained global biodiversity to the present day.Much of the scientific documentation of the Chengjiang biota is in Chinese, and this is the first book in English to provide fossil enthusiasts with an overview of the fauna. The aim is to introduce professional and amateur paleontologists, and all those fascinated by evolutionary biology, to the aesthetic and scientific quality of the Chengjiang fossils.
Customer Reviews:
authoritative taxonomic summary with great illustrations.......2006-12-31
Although the front matter on the geologic context of the Chengjiang biota is terse and seemingly rather superficial (partly because relativley little is known), the taxonomic treatment and photographs are stunning. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a serious interest in the Cambrian and its biota and the early evolution of animals.
The excessively high price is the only thing keeping this book from a 5-star rating.
The Cambrian Fossils of Chengjiang, China.......2004-08-07
"The Cambrian Fossils of Chengjiang, China: The Flowering of Animal Life" written by Hou Xian-Guang, Richard J. Aldridge, Jan Bergstrom, David J. Siveter, Derek J. Siveter, and Feng Xiang-Hong is a mavelious book on early Cambrian life found in Southern China. This book is about the discovery and initial study of the Chengjiang Lagerstatte, where Lagerstatte means a fossil geological deposit of economic interest.
Prior to this discovery, all that we had to go upon for Cambrian life forms was the Burgess Shale in British Columbia, Canada. Now a truer picture emerges as to the diversity and flowering of fauna and flora in the Cambrian. The Chengjiang Lagerstatte even predates the Burgess Shale but not by much in geological time. Professor Hou's discovery of the Chengjiang biota in Yunnan Province, China in 1984 proved to be a revelation equal to , or even exceeding, that provided by the fauna of the Burgess Shale. Firstly, its older, taking us closer to the origin of life's "Big Bang." Secondly, its preservation was, if anything, more exquisite. Thirdly, an even greater variety of organisims was preserved... with relationships established with those fauna of the Burgess Shale biota.
The fauna included in this book have some peculiarities all of their own, also, they are claimed as the earliest verterbrates. There are arthropods beyond your imagination, "worms" of several phyla, lubering lobopods, large predators and the ever present trilobites. This book brings together wonderful color photographs and line drawings to further your imagination about Cambrian life. Think of this book as the first comprehensive travel guide to early Cambrian life. You are looking at what was on the seafloor some 525 million years ago and the seafloor is full of surprises with such detail that the specimens look like they're ready for the disecting table ready for inspection.
All of the Chengjiang specimens figured in this book are from the Lower Cambrian Yu'anshan Member, Heilinpu Formation, of Yunnan Province, making for some very interesting reading. I gave this book a solid 5 stars for well-appointed pictures of these specimens with exceptional detailed explanations of the life forms.
Additional material in English on the Chengjiang fossils.......2004-06-21
This book is an excellent source of information on these remarkable fossils. The color photography adds materially to the pleasure of reading this book and the reconstruction black and white drawings shown are a must. Although many specimens show these reconstuctions some do not.
There is one incorrect statement regarding the book -"...this is the first book in English to provide fossil enthusiasts.......".
Another excellent publication which has many color plates and reconstructions in English is found in "The Cambrian Explosion and the Fossil Record" ISSN 1015-8448 Bulletin of the National Museum of Natural Science by Junyuan Chen, Yen-Nnien Cheng, H.V. Iten Guest Editors. The book is soft bound and is 316 pages, most of which is on the Chengijang fauna, Publication date 31 Dec. 1997.
These two publications are both excellent and if you have a real desire to find out more about these extraordinary fossils I highly recommend both books.
The Bulletin of National Museum of Natural Science is published by the Division of Collection and Research, National Museum of Natural Science . 1, Kuan-chien Road Taichung, Taiwan 404, R.O.C.

Seagrasses: Biology, Ecology and Conservation
ASIN: 0444508910 |
Book Description
This thorough and informative volume presents a set of detailed, globally applicable techniques for seagrass research.
The book provides methods for all aspects of seagrass science from basic plant collection to statistical approaches and investigations of plant-animal interaction. The emphasis is on methods that are applicable in both developing and developed countries.
The importance of seagrasses in coastal and near shore environments, and ultimately their contribution to the productivity of the world's oceans, has become increasingly recognised over the last 40 years.
Seagrasses provide food for sea turtles, nearly 100 fish species, waterfowl and for the marine mammals the manatee and dugong. Seagrasses also support complex food webs by virtue of their physical structure and primary production and are well known for their role as breeding grounds and nurseries for important crustacean, finfish and shell fish populations. Seagrasses are the basis of an important detrital food chain. The plants filter nutrients and contaminants from the water, stabilise sediments and act as dampeners to wave action. Seagrasses rank with coral reefs and mangroves as some of the world's most productive coastal habitat and strong linkages among these habitats make the loss of seagrasses a contributing factor in the degradation of the world's oceans.
Contributors from around the world provide up-to-date methods for comparable collection of ecological information from both temperate and tropical seagrass ecosystems.

Some Books are best left as long magazine articles.......2007-09-07
The Power of Positive Parenting contained a few key guiding principles that are valuable. The author's folksy style though is too repetitive and contains too much fluff - I appreciate the message and did learn some good things but it could have been done in a fraction of the space.
If you're a much faster reader (or have a significantly lighter reading load) than me this book is great. If not, I would have loved the Cliff Notes for this one.
From a practical point of view I wish the advice was tailored to particular age groups - too often the advice was poorly;y matched to my 3 year old.
In a nutshell: Love your kids, reinforce their good behavior, don't (over)react to their age-appropriate insanity. (sorry if I missed one)
Excellent Resource for Clinical Psychologists.......2006-11-10
I regularly assign this book as reading material for my clients, especially parents, as part of my clinical practice. I was amazed to find that many of the principles that I had stumbled onto in my clinical career as a Behavior Analyst were formally documented in this book all of those years ago. This is probably as close to a manual on "How to Parent" as there is out there.
most respected book on parenting.......2006-09-12
This invaluable book guides parents in raising responsible and respectful children while maintaining a caring and fun atmosphere in the home. My husband and I have used this book with our own six children for the past several years and have found it to be extremely useful and comforting in navigating difficult situations, and has helped us to stay close to each of our children.
The principles in the book are supported by research and empirical data, but, more importantly, Dr. Latham and countless others who have studied his model have seen amazing success. The important principles of ignoring inconsequential behavior, rewarding good behavior and effectively disciplining harmful behavior are outlined step-by- step with many specifics and examples and can be referenced easily by the type of behavior you want to address based on your child's age.
I often recommend Latham's book as a great complement for parents who are using my own children's series, "Learning to Get Along", which teaches concepts of respect and responsibility directly to children.
Positive Parenting.......2006-01-30
I found this book to be very helpful in understaning what helps and what hurts when trying to parent my children. I have read many books over the 20 years of parenting my 4 children and I feel this book is very insiteful with real examples of interactions with parents and children. This is the only book you will need to be the best parent and head you in the dirrection to have real and meaningful relationships with all of your children.
Turned my family dynamic around completely!.......2005-12-08
I first bought this book 2 years ago. At the time I was at my wits end struggling with behavioral issues with one of my children and feeling like parenting was the worst job in the world and that I was the worst parent ever. It took a while for the ideas from this book to sink in, but little by little I began to see that my little one was craving attention, ANY attention positive or negative, whatever she could get. Unfortunatly all she was getting was negative attention!
This book gave me the tools (recommended words and actions) to use to turn the negative attention to positive attention. It taught me to seek out and reward positive behavior and calmly handle the unwanted behavior. Two years later we have a warm, open, fun, mutually respectful relationship, a complete turn around. I feel like I am a great parent and my kids are respectful (most of the time!), not by force but out of respect. I have since bought 3 copies to give to parents that are frustrated and in the same negative attention abyss.
Parts of the book are redundant and albeit a bit corny but I love it just the same... IT WORKED FOR MY FAMILY.
