Book Description
This colorful book captures some of the most beautiful and rare scale models of American Ford, Edsel, Lincoln, and Mercury cars and light trucks from the classic 1930-69 period. During the last thirty years, a small number of builders have devoted themselves to making, by hand, model cars in scale. Often limited to only a few hundred pieces, these unusual and expensive models have flawless finishing and astounding detail. For the first time ever in one source, the author has assembled hundreds of high-resolution color photographs from his and others' private collections, and from the builders themselves. Read about the history of these Ford replicas, the cars they are modelled upon, and learn where you can get them. This book is a must read for people who enjoy scale models and Ford Motor Company cars.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for the serious model car collector .......2006-10-18
Collectors of model cars prefer to spend their spare cash on model cars, not books on model cars. I can understand their priorities, but in the case of "Ford in Miniature" they really ought to reserve a few dollars for an exceptional book that puts an important part of their hobby in perspective - 1:43rd scale handbuilt models of classic American cars. Randall Olson displays a knowledge of Fords and handbuilt models like few others with a stunning array of color pictures and loads of inside information. His book will surely become a standard work for the model collector - at least for that discerning collector who is willing to spend a little on books on model cars, and not just model cars.
Product Description
The Barclay Manufacturing Company of New Jersey produced wonderful, now highly collectible cast metal toy cars and car transports from 1932 through 1971. This book is the first to provide comprehensive catalog listings and prices for every known variation and color, in all four separate series. With few exceptions, these beloved vehicles were not marked with the manufacturers name or country of origin. Over 75 beautiful, full color images display 100s of these toys, allowing easy identification for the very first time. The detailed text provides a history of the company, a description of the four series (Vintage, Streamlined, Classic, and Modern), the production methods and painting techniques of each series, various packaging techniques employed by Barclay, identification and pricing guidelines, and fourteen identification charts. Values are found in the text.

Barclay Toys Transports & Cars 1932-1971 Review .......2004-11-17
I believe that this book will be the one people will turn to to get valuable info. on the Barclay Transports & Cars. It must have taken the authors years to compile all the information in this book . If you collect Barclay's then this is a must have book .
The book starts you off with a brief history of the Barclay Manufacturing Co. and as the book progreses through the pages it gives up more and more detail of every known Transport and Car . The book is very well layed out with it's easy to understand no. system . For easy reference it has lots of color pictures to refer to .
Thank goodiness we have people who are wiling to do the work involved to compile such a book and get it to this high level .
If you don't have this book then you are at a disadvantage .
Loved It !!!
Barclay Toys : Small Transports , 1932 - 1971.......2004-10-19
I found this book highly detailed and very very informative. The authors not only did an excellent job of clearly explaining the differences between the 4 basic styles but showed all the many many colors , shades and tints .I especially liked and found interesting, all the little notes and stories of the background of how and why some of these changes came about. The high quality paper and clear photos make the pictures jump out at you right off the page. The photo effectiveness really shines thru, when it came to showing all the various tints and shades of the same color. The pictures were not only close and clear but very vivid. I especially liked the authors simple, straight forward and very effective way that they cataloged these various changes. This easy, open ended system, allows more additions to be included later when they are found. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. Kudos to the authors, for taking, what had to be a huge amount of man hours to bring this much needed book to the next level . I predict this will be the Barclay " bible " for identifying the small Transports.

Collecting Model Car & Truck Kits
ASIN: 0764312324 |
Book Description
Promotional cars and trucks are miniature vehicles used by car and truck dealerships and manufacturers to promote the sale of their vehicles. Each example was produced for one year, then discontinued when the new models came out. For this reason, and their appeal to the car lover in general, promotionals have a popularity enjoyed by comparatively few collectibles. This new book presents a complete list of promotional cars and trucks, including manufacturer and current value, in a model-by-model chart. The charts are heavily illustrated with over 500 beautiful color photos, showing the full range of vehicles available. This comprehensive book will appeal to promotional vehicle collectors, toy collectors, and automobile and truck buffs alike!
Customer Reviews:
Good, despite the inherent problems of price guides..........2003-04-18
...which become obsolete probably within the year. Nevertheless, this is a good guide for what is and is not available, a price or value relative to another model, or what was ever made in the first place. It's obsolete by now as a price guide (one look at eBay will tell you that), but a comprehensive guide to the hobby.
Book Description
Fueled by nostalgia, todays flea markets and auction websites abound with thousands of pocket-sized vehicles. Arranged by vehicle types this colour history is filled with photos depicting the most significant of these miniatures. Brief histories of the manufacturers appear throughout, accompanied by overviews and descriptions of the individual toy vehicles.

Nostalgia city!.......2000-09-18
What a great time I had with this book! Every page, and every photo, brought back memories of these cars. It's a really nicely produced volume (I already bought a copy for a friend who's rich enough to collect real cars!) and if you leave it out on a coffee table, say, everybody reaches for it and, as they leaf through it, they invariably start to smile. Now I'm just sorry I gave away (or maybe my parents did) all my own toys from the 60s!
Fascinating and Fun... A Must For Any Kid From the '60s.......2000-09-05
I was given this book by a friend and didn't know what to expect... but all sorts of happy memories fooded back as I flipped through the pages. Ragan clearly loves his subject, but he's a added a quirky tone that makes this fun not just for collectors but also for people like me who just remember playing with some of these toys. It's also worth noting that the photographs are fantastic.
It'll Christmas gift list for sure.

Book Description
You can't tell the men from the boys by the size of their toys after all. The miniature car is one of the most popular and enduring toys, almost as old as the machines that inspired them. Some are veritable miracles of technology in miniature, with functioning headlamps and front-wheel drive; others are lovingly crafted to a fine level of detail, with real leather seats and handpainted finishes. Some rare older models are today literally worth their weight in gold, especially if the packaging is intact. Collectible Miniature Cars is a charming trip through the world of the toy car, featuring over five hundred photographs of cars, trucks, and utility vehicles, both vintage and modern, from all the leading toy car producers, such as Dinky, Marklin, Bing, Schuco and Meccano. The book is divided into themed chapters covering family cars, sport coupes, racing cars, and utility vehicles. Each photograph is accompanied by a brief yet informative text giving the key features of every toy, and the volume is completed by a buyer's guide. This attractively designed book is the perfect choice for all toy car collectors, and those who have never quite forgotten the joy of owning a brand-new, shiny miniature car, and imagining the hours of pleasure it will bring.
* Over 500 items reproduced life-sized in color in each title

Collecting Miniature Emergency Vehicles........2002-07-15
This is one of my favorite books on collecting miniature fire trucks and ambulances. I have used this book to keep track of what I collect and it is very informative on many models and manufacturers through 1985. I do not know of any other book that has been researched and complete concerning the collecting of emergency vehicles. I recommend this book to anyone that shares this great hobby...

This is a wonderful book written by one of the greatest americans of our time. I keep it around, it is wonderful to flip through now and then and guests love it.
An old timers' treasure.......2000-06-02
Miniature car racing is a thing of the past except for some beautiful old race cars and a few nostalgic followers. My grandfather was an avid racer and is mentioned in this book, which is how I came across it. My family has one copy which we pass around to remind us of "the old times". This is a wonderful book with all of the great names and the GREAT cars. It's good to see that all of the fun and work that went along with this sport is wonderfully captured to be remebered forever.

Book Description
A collection of delightful essays on gardening by America's favorite expatriate author.
Customer Reviews:
Humorous & informative gardening sketches.......2005-07-30
The short essays in this book are highly entertaining and informative, shedding light on many little-known aspects of gardening history. Elliott writes with humor and wit, and with a self-effacing posture that is disarming.
Macho gardener............2003-07-19
Charles Elliott proves one thing, being an expert in one subject does not necessarily make you an expert in another. Elliott writes well and entertainingly, but his book THE POTTING SHED PAPERS leads me to believe he does not understand gardening or the natural world. To hear Elliott tell it, men invented gardening and have been responsible for gardening and exploring the natural word ever since. Has he never heard of Vita Sackville, Gertrude Jekyll, Katherine White, Elizabeth Lawrence, Eleanor Perenyi, Rachel Carson, Annie Dillard, Louise Beebe Wilder, Margaret Murie, Katherine Scherman, Betty Flanders Thompson, Mary Austin, Maria Audubon, and many other women gardeners and naturalists? Oh yes, he gives them a nod here and there, but the focus of his essays are men and their experiences.
Speaking of men, I would have found Elliott's book far more interesting if I hadn't read Henry Mitchell, Allen Lacy, Michael Pollan, and Beverly Nichols and noted their apparent willingness to mention "female gareners" they had known and/or admired. Also, other garden writers have done a better job of covering the men Elliot discusses. For example, if you want to know more about Johnny Appleseed and apples, read Michael Pollen's BOTANY OF DESIRE.
Other than his patronizing tone and disregard of female gardeners and naturalists, I suppose the most irritating aspect of this book is Elliott's apparent disregard for nature. In my estimation, he approaches gardening as a battle to be waged, not an activity to be enjoyed. Unlike his Welsh and English neighbors for whom he has thinly disquised scorn (and one assumes this includes Prince Charles owner of a profitable organic gardening operation in Wales), Elliott never met a machine he doesn't like. He doesn't cultivate his plot working in harmony with the rhythms of nature, he crucifies it. He says he owns a very large rototiller which he uses to plow the earth with such enthusiasm he brings down fences. (In some circles, this is known as rape.) Anyone who knows anything about gardening knows overworking the soil destroys humus. Humus is the good stuff you need to retain moisture and nurture plants. Organic gardeners advise planting half digested material from the compost heap directly into the garden. Half digested is the opposite of finely-ground particles produced by machines with gas powered engines.
I use organic gardening techniques and year after year have produced magnificent and productive plants loaded with flowers and fruits and vegetables. I don't own a single gas guzzling tool. I use tools powered by my own arms and legs. I'd be willing to bet my garden and my body are in better shape than Mr. Elliott's.
Product Description
Birth - 18 months. A straight-forward and light-hearted approach to teaching infants how to communicate using simple American Sign Language (ASL) signs.
Amazon.com
Sign with Your Baby Complete Learning Kit will enable you to communicate at new levels with your baby long before she can speak. This comprehensive package of book, video, and reference guide shows how simple gestures can communicate ideas like "I'm hungry" or "help me." Caregivers grasp baby's needs immediately rather than learn through trial and error. Dr. Joseph Garcia has designed the system so it's not necessary to learn an entire new language, although it also provides a terrific start in American Sign Language for a hearing-impaired child. A fascinating introduction delves into the development of language in children and uses informative line drawings to demonstrate over 150 hand signs for all kinds of actions and nouns. The accompanying video provides practical tips for getting started, some insight into the hows and whys of this method from Dr. Burton White (director of the Center for Parent Education), and inspiring sights of young babies signing effectively with their caregivers. The laminated quick-reference guide lists some of the most common words in any parent's day: cookie, no, and up are but a few. Garcia's clear, concise methods make learning a breeze, and caregivers gain outstanding new abilities to give the best possible care for the babies entrusted to them. --Jill Lightner
Customer Reviews:
Easy to understand / user-friendly.......2007-10-11
This set has many forms of materials included - the quick-view card helpful for babysitters and grandparents, the DVD to fully explain the theory behind sign-language as well as properly demonstrate the motions of sign-language, and a book which covers many of the same points on theory of sign-language as the DVD. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and after only 1 showing we both picked up many signs to be able to use with our little one.
Signing with babies works.......2007-09-10
We bought Garcia's DVD for our grandson at about 4 months of age. Signs helped him express his needs and even feelings with a minimum of fussing. He is now almost 3 and very verbal & advanced. It may be that he's just a great kid, but we believe signing with babies really works.
Signing is cool -- don't need the video though.......2007-07-08
I like the sign language. It was pretty great when our 9 month old told me he wanted milk the first time! I don't think you need the video though. You can just start repeating certain signs on your own. Just repeat them a lot and be consistent.
The problem we had is that we couldn't get our daycare providers to use the signs. So it seemed like any progress we made got undone by them. He would use the signs with them but they wouldn't recognize it. I can only imagine how that must have been frustrating and confusing for him. So make sure everyone around him is going to use the signs before you start teaching them.
Too much marketing, Not enough vocab........2007-05-26
I started at 7 months, he picked up the first sign at about 10 months, and the rest came around 1 yr. The video/book combination is good because the video shows you the signs and the book is handy for a quick reference.
Drawbacks:
1. I felt like much of the video was still trying to sell me on the idea of doing sign with my baby. It could focus less on marketing and present the information more efficiently.
2. The sign vocabulary is limited to the first stage of sign language learning only. It could be improved by including more vocabulary.
Best Baby Sign Language program.......2007-05-14
I have compared this program with other sign language programs, and it seems to be the best one I have come across so far. At one point, I taught another baby sign language course, whose name I will not mention. The program's signs did not always come close to actual sign language, which I found was offensive to the deaf community. Joseph Garcia's program follows actual signs from ASL, and the program is easy enough to learn if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. I would definitely recommend this baby sign language program for other mothers - the resources are varied - book, DVD, quick reference guide - it's the best out there!!
