I loved this book because it included ideas on how to use silk embroidery in a modern way rather the victorian way. The works "Zane Gray Trail" and "The Desert Garden" are not in that fussy Victorian tradition.

3 out of 5 stars An ok book, and a classic, but not what I was hoping for.......2001-09-20

I have to say this: I just don't like her style. She likes to do very cluttered things using multiple types of embroidery, and I think many of her examples and projects are quite hideous.

I was hoping for more of a primer on silk ribbon embroidery. And while there is a useful section of reference stitches, and a nice beginning section on the history of silk ribbon embroidery & necessary supplies... I wish there was more technique and less projects.

Unfortunately, Ms. Montano's other books which seem to be stitch dictionaries only have small sections of silk ribbon embroidery stitches & no technique section.

Unfortunately, this is the best beginner book out there that I have run across thus far -- but to be sure I would dump this book in a heartbeat if I came across a good primer/reference book.

In a nutshell: why would someone take such a beautiful technique and make such ugly things? The projects verge from overly country to bizzarely overadorned.

Surely the best book on Silk Ribbon Embroidery available. The materials needed, each embroidery knot shown with a line drawing, projects galore, including brooches, ring bearers pillow, heart picture frame, heart pendents, beautiful sewing cases bedecked with silken roses, and more. Judith visits with well known silk ribbon embroiderers in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, each tells their design secrets.A wonderful section on the Australian photo transfer process for putting your favorite photos on fabric so you can embroider a garden around them

A "must have" for "silk ribbon embroidery" lovers

    5 out of 5 stars Best Starter's Guide.......2003-01-29

This book is excellent for beginners. There are no projects to "do" and therefore, it allows the beginner to really challenge their creativity and imagination. It gives all the steps and stitches one needs to get started. I chose this book because I needed to know how to make basic flower stitches without the pressure of trying to duplicate someone else's creations and because there was no pressure to finish a project. This book is a must for the beginner. It was all I really needed to get a clear understanding of how to learn to create my own projects. I always refer to it when I feel I need a "push".

5 out of 5 stars A great book if you are just starting Ribbon Embroidery.......2002-04-18

I found this book very easy to work with; the text is easy to read and the illustrations show how the stitches should be placed. I have created a few unique pieces using this book :O)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with great instructions and good graphics........1998-11-21

I have found this as well as other books by Deanna Hall West to be very well written, very well graphed out with a lot of ideas for how one would use the design. I would not hesitate to recommend this book as I feel I am a professional designer with silk ribbon and love it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-02-22

This book is a wonderful starter book for someone who is just learning ribbon embroidery. It gives great illustrations for the stitches and wonderful pictures of projects. One can use the projects for ideas and inspirations for their own creations. I love this book. Simple and easy to follow directions.

5 out of 5 stars Great Visual Guide for Beginners.......2005-01-15

This is a wonderful book if you're looking for a visual guide to help you get started. I had never done silk ribbon embroidery before, but I was easily able to create beautiful roses, leaves and stems. The many full color photos are taken very close up so you can really see each step clearly. After you've made a few petals and leaves, you'll see how easy it is to create stunningly beautiful embroideries using only a few, simple stitches. You'll also learn how to paint a background, and how to mount and frame your work.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner's Book!.......2002-01-29

This book will give you every bit of information you'll need to get started in silk ribbon embroidery. The step-by-step instructions and pictures are nearly as good as having a personal instructor! I was amazed by the amount of information packed into this thin book. You'll be able to make dozens of different types of stitches with the information you find here. This book is well planned and (surprisingly) covers even such details as painting in a background for your work! Worth every penny you pay for this book!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Not a how-to book.......2003-05-02

The lady from California is right: beautiful and stunning. A superb coffee table book BUT not a how-to let me show you how one. If you want to make these projects you'll have to buy them from her OR get the Ann Cox Beginner's Guide and learn how. Ms. Eriksson's directions are rather sketchy and terse. An unfortunate after-effect of thiis terseness is that the book feels more like a catalogue, hence the coffee book category, than a craft manual.

Most of the projects are superb but towards the end they fall into the Helen Gibb (another Oz ribbon worker) category and become overly-done garish Victoriana. That aside there is some seriously good embroidery here and if get the Ann Cox book you can figure out how to make that all happen. Ann is a superb teacher-artist and her thin volume truly prepares you for the inspiration of Eriksson.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2001-08-02

I spied this at a craft show about 6 months ago and just had to take it home with me, even though I have never done any ribbon embroidery. This book is gorgeous. Large, high gloss, full color page after, full color page clearly showing the most amazing life-like ribbon embroidery floral arrangements. The instructions are clear and detailed patterns are presented for the projects. The artist works mainly with variegated silk ribbons and she explains how to choose and take advantage of their qualities to achieve her results, along with detailed how-to-stitch diagrams. The works is of the highest caliber similar to the types of projects seen in Australian embroidery magazines. Even if you never make a project, you can learn a great deal from her stunning compositions and color usage. Buy it as a pattern book or to enjoy as a luscious coffee table book.

    5 out of 5 stars Ribbon Masterpieces.......1999-11-30

Wow! Here is a book with a refreshing view, showcasing the artistry of someone who is not mired in the terminal beginner's, cutesy, tacky and "me too" mode that crowd every "craft" magazine, supply shop, book, and all too many television shows today. Helena Eriksson displays a true artisan's grasp of what can be done with a little imagination and very importantly, quality of fabric (even though many of her color choices center around mauves!) Somehow, no matter how labor intensive and complicated her silk flower projects appear, this book can inspire anyone to give it a try - make something beautiful - and go beyond the mediocrity of all the basic, boring, sameness! A beautiful book - a beautiful presentation - highly recommended for all of us fanatics of silk ribbons and flowers!

Very light instruction and content. There are much better books on this subject.

4 out of 5 stars Silk Ribbon Embroidery for Beginners.......2001-07-28

This book uses very simple stitches to maximum effect. I am a silk ribbon embroidery addict and love the designs in it. Sheena Cable also has some unique ideas as to where to put all your designs. Aside from the more predictable pillows and wall hangings, she suggests hats, tablecloths, napkins, curtain valances and tie-backs. All the stitches are simple, but she uses a few not found in many other books. The pictures are all in color and you can see the embroidery clearly. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The book follows a natural progression from easy to more challenging projects. All in all a great beginner book.

Whether you already know how to do ribbon embroidery or not, this book is for you. The books starts with the basics from choosing fabrics to setting up your sewing machine to do ribbon embroidery. This is followed by step-by-step, easily understandable instructions on how to do the various stiches. From there, you are shown how to join those stiches to make everything from flowers to bugs and birds and monograms. It finishes with a number of projects that showcase the techniques shown in the book. Best yet, there are brilliant colored photographs throughout the book to show you how ribbon embroidery can be used in any number of ways. They even feature a section on using ribbon embroidery to embellish crazy quilts. I found this book not only helpful, but very inspiring.

          Product Description

This study guide is uniquely designed to complement current introductory textbooks and online courses in speech and hearing anatomy and physiology. Whether taught face-to-face or online, anatomy and physiology courses and their accompanying texts are dense in content. This workbook answers the need for a practical book, being neither unnecessarily complex nor academic, for undergraduate training in speech-language pathology. It is designed to allow students to work at their own pace, to learn how to organize, how to bring together, and how to functionally apply the content learned in their coursework. The Study Guide is organized into seven units. The first unit contains a comprehensive synopsis of anatomy and physiology, including content such as locator terms, planes of reference, and anatomical position, enabling students to learn the vocabulary needed to study anatomy and physiology. The second unit takes a brief look at the basics of cells and tissues to form a foundation for study of larger structures. The remainder of the workbook organizes speech and hearing anatomy into the functional categories of respiration, phonation, articulation, as well as the nervous and auditory systems. Each unit provides an extremely well-written, practical summary of the particular speech and hearing system, followed by learning objectives, specific questions students can answer in outline format, and finally, a self-test. This all-new Study Guide clarifies and simplifies a complex element of the introductory course and provides an ideal complementary learning and self-testing tool for students. Complements all undergraduate textbooks and courses in anatomy and physiology Contains illustrations designed specifically to help the student identify the body parts and functions involved in human speech and hearing. Features a practical easy-to-use design with comprehensive unit-by-unit outlines Provides self-tests and test answers for each unit. The 20th-century reclamation of Goddess traditions has evolved from a small counterculture revolution of the mid-1900s to the birthright of an entire generation of children and young teenagers. However, the parents--who were adults when they first turned to paganism--are discovering that raising children in a pagan tradition can prove difficult amidst the near void of resources to assist them in teaching this way of life. Relying on age-old learning methods, such as songs and storytelling, Circle Round fills this void with techniques that are truly rooted in traditions. This priceless resource offers guidelines for helping children discover the different facets of the Goddess tradition--from altars to sabbats--and suggests recipes, creative projects, and other activities resuscitating the values of family in our latchkey society. --Brian Patterson

                            Book Description

In our rushed, stressed society, it's sometimes difficult to spend meaningful time as a family. Now Starhawk, Diane Baker, and Anne Hill offer new ways to foster a sense of togetherness through celebrations that honor the sacredness of life and our Mother Earth.

Goddess tradition embraces the wheel of life, the never-ending cycle of birth, growth, love, fulfillment, and death. Each turn of the wheel is presented here, in eight holidays spanning the changing seasons, in rites of passage for life transitions, and in the elements of fire, air, water, earth, and spirit. Circle Round is rich with songs, rituals, craft and cooking projects, and read-aloud stories, as well as suggestions for how you can create your own unique family traditions. Here are just some of the ways to make each event in the cycle of life more special:

Mark Summer Solstice by making sweet-smelling herb pillows for good dreams
Send a teenager off to college with the Leaving Behind and Carrying With rituals
Comfort an injured child with the Tree of Life meditation
Commemorate a loved one by planting or donating a tree

As a one-of-a-kind resource for people of many faiths and beliefs, Circle Round will be a beloved companion in your home for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars We use this book often.......2007-08-17

This is one of my all time favorite books. It has wonderful ideas for crafts, rituals, recipes and stories to share with your children. We use this book at all the 8 sabbats, and there are quite a few recipes we use even more often.
I found that there is also a CD with all the songs on it too. Which is a great addition to this book. :)
One thing we love to do, the idea from this book, is to "clean" the house with the cycle of the moon. My 3 year old loves to bless the house with sage!

                            4 out of 5 stars A very unique book!.......2007-07-27

I just finished this book and was really pleased with it. I do have some different views and opinions than the authors, however they warned me that I might in the introduction. The ideas about explaining the Goddess and Wicca to toddlers, as well as they activities they included really inspired me. The one part of the book I wouldn't go over with my daughter was the 14 year old boy explaining how to be a good lover. Well, maybe I would after all, and share with her why I don't believe 14 year olds should be sexually active. This isn't the be all end all book, it's a jumping off place. And really, isn't that what a book about including children in Wicca should be?

                            5 out of 5 stars Marvelous book!.......2007-07-01

My daughter (age 9) and I have benefited greatly from the info in this book. It is written for the parent who wants to teach their child the old ways. It is FULL of examples of how to explain traditions, goddesses, rituals, etc. to a young child, and in a language the child can understand. Every pagan parent should have this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Circle Round is Great!.......2007-05-17

bought this book to read and learn with my son. I am currently taking a class that involves this book to help your children and you better understand the Goddess. It has several different perspectives from other families on how they all relate to the Goddess.

This is very informative and a definate read for all who would love to learn and share this with their children (of all ages)

                            Brightest Blessings!

5 out of 5 stars The best pagan reference book EVER!!.......2007-03-10

This book is used so frequently it is getting worn. It is the perfect thing for coming up with ideas on how to celebrate the sabbats with children. I use it to come up with ideas for adults as well. Whether it be stories, crafts, recipes, or information it has it all. Whether a parent or not, it's a must for the earth-based spiritually minded people. Well worth the money spent.
