Perhaps the best book of its kind currently on the market. Positively dripping in excellence, this book is your one stop resource for all of your furniture restoration questions. Warped tabletops, veneer repair and replacement, broken chair leg, worn chest of drawer's runner, dents, scratches, staining and finishing, no subject is given short shrift, and all of the examples are accompanied by a plentiful supply of colour photographs, and clear instructions. It even makes a great read for those who lack the time and resources to undertake such repairs. A thoroughly satisfying book.

Excellent book.......2005-10-30

If you only wish to buy one book on repair of old furniture, this is the book. The author is a true specialist within the field and everything is explained and illustrated excellently. In addition it's a very pretty book with many fine photos. The only little flaw is that the info on refinishing is a little scattered. Anyway, the info is there. Go buy the book!

A great book for the DIY furniture repair.......2002-07-20

This is a great introduction book to furniture repair.

The book is organized in these main sections:
1. Tools and materials 63 pp.
2. Structural repairs 98 pp.
3. Preserving an original finish 20 pp.
4. Stripping, finishing, and hardware restoration 43 pp.

The most valuable for me was the section on structural repairs. Over 20 projects that need various repair jobs, each is done, step by step, illustrated with lots of clear, full-color photos.

This book would well-equip you to handle most repairs of a non-conservation nature (not highly valuable pieces).

Brian, if you're listening, I'd like to see you do a book this size on touch up, repair and color matching!

INCREDIBLE BOOK.......2002-02-04

This is a fantastic book. You could actually teach from it it is so detailed and comprehensive. The author includes the small details that most how-to books leave out. With this book, you can actually complete a project from start to finish. With most books, there are huge gaps in the information that leave you guessing.

A great "how-to" book to have in your collection of handy man guides.

Excellent pictures, clear directions, and many examples, make this book easy to follow.

Better to buy Anderson's Book.......2006-05-18

I recently bought this book after purchasing a few Lophophora specimens, and was somewhat dissappointed. Much of the information is sparse or inaccurate, and overall you come away having learned little. It is vague in describing the effects and chemistry of the plant, and minimal effort is made to try and describe different species and varieties.

A much better book to buy would be "Peyote: The Divine Cactus", by Edward F. Anderson. It gives a detailed ethnographic history of peyote, describing the modern ceremonies of the Navajo, Plains, Huichol, and many other Indian Tribes. He studies its effects on humans in detail, its chemistry, legal aspects of peyote, and (most importantly!) the botany of Peyote, giving a comprehensive view of the species as well as its different taxonomic varieties (eg. L. williamsi, L. diffusa, L. jourdania, L. fricii, L. decipiens, etc.). Much of the information contained within cannot be found on the internet.

Although most of Gottlieb's material is dealt with in Anderson's book, nevertheless the practical information on grafting and mescaline extration is much more detailed in Gottlieb's (probably because of the different target audiences :-)

All in all, still good to have as an accompaniment.

Not so impressed.......2005-10-11

This book is ok, if you want to learn about native use and things like that. It has good descriptions of lots of rare entheogenic cacti. If all you want to know how to do, is cultivate Lophophora and Tichocerous, the internet has better information.

PeYoTe.......2000-03-31

This book provides good information layed out in an easy to read format on the cultivation, consumption, legality, and history of peyote and other similar cacti. It also gives a breakdown of the alkaloids in peyote and gives detailed methods for mescaline extraction (you know...for resaerch purposes). It also includes pictures and descriptions of other cacti containing alkaloids similar to peyote. The only shortcoming I find in this book is the lack of any research reports on the harmful effects of peyote, but that could be because there has been very little research done on it. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in peyote for any purpose.

The Basis of Natural Painfree Birthing.......2007-07-12

I purchased this book 5 years ago. It led me to believe that a pain-free birth was my right as a woman, and that I did not deserve to have an agonizing labor due to "original sin." This book led me to find Hypnobabies which taught me how to have a painfree birthing by giving me specific skills. I believe that Hypnobabies is a true implementation of what this author proposes. This book coupled with the skills I learned in my Hypnobabies class, led me to have a pain-free birth with my first child. Using the two sources listed above, I expect to have the same outcome with my next baby this October. Of course, if there is some abberation to a mother's anatomy or a baby's position, there may be discomfort. However for the majority of women, a natural and pain-free birth is possible.

The original book on natural childbirth. Why bother with imitators?

If you can look past the author's philosophical rambles about the noble role of childbirth and motherhood in bettering our civilization (a rather grandiose claim, I thought), this book contains a lot of useful information about the mechanics of the event...and a truly *unique* section on how to give birth alone when your house has just been reduced to rubble around you (the author was a doctor during the World Wars).

Overall, though, the doctor's main point, that childbirth should not be painful, is... um... debatable. Grain of salt time. Let's just say it turned out to be far from true in my case.

Thanks to the good doctor, though, I did know when to expect the most painful part to occur, and I recognized and understood it when it came. So, my fear was less than it would have been otherwise. Goodness knows my own doctors did not clue me in to what to expect *at all.*

Though this book contains some tried and true science behind its theories, the main message seemed to be "if you can relax and your childbirth will be basically painless." This might be true for some women, but I don't believe this is true for the vast majority. Even with training and preparation, relaxation is helpful, but does not eliminate the pain. I found it somewhat condescending that the author seems to think women are doing something wrong if they have a painful birth process.

Very insightful and pure.......2007-05-01

This book was written in the 1940s by Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, a British obstetrician. He had a few experiences of watching women with pain-free childbirths and became obsessed with finding out why some women experience pain in labor and others don't. His conclusion? It's fear.

This book thoroughly describes how fear actually causes pain and hinders labor. It also provides you with infomation that will hopefully reduce your own fears, and with exercises to help you prepare for labor.

I really like the tone of this book. Dr. Dick-Read sounds genuinely excited about his discovery and what it could mean if doctors and women took the principles to heart. It's amazing to me that he wrote it so long ago, and yet it's still relevant today.

8 lb 11 oz baby with No Pain, No Fear and No Medication!.......2007-03-14

I read this book between my first and second babies over 20 years ago. I had a normal amount of pain with my first child, but no pain and no fear with the second one. IT IS POSSIBLE! I had a completely natural birth with each baby. I only wish I had read it before my first child! I would encourage any woman to read this wonderful book!

The key for me was simply allowing myself to believe that painless childbirth was possible. This is harder than it sounds. I had heard so many stories about how frightening and painful childbirth was, but none about how wonderful it can be. It is a completely natural process, and I just needed to hear that and embrace it.

Admittedly the book is a little tougher than some to get through due to the style of writing. Please stick with it. If you read with an open mind it can make a big difference for you.
