Book Description
Kids who constantly have horses on their minds are going to love this book. The Horse Farm Read-and-Play Sticker Book draws young riders into the places they like best: the horse farm, the tack room, the stable, the paddock, and the stableyard. And with 75 full-color, reusable, heavy-duty vinyl stickers, kids can create their own equine dramas while at the same time learning important points about such essentials as grooming and tacking up.
The range of stickers is irresistable. There are foals, a barn cat (and a barn mouse), a vet, and a farrier. But there are also name plates for the horse stalls; saddles, brushes, helmets, and cowboy hats for the tack room; barrels and jumps for horse shows, plus championship ribbons; and a flock of chickens and a few barn swallows for the stableyard.
All this horse play, however, is tied to real-life horse lessons. For example, if the game is "let's pretend it's time for the horse's evening feeding," the book reminds kids to give the horse his ration of grain and his mineral block, fill his bucket with fresh water, put out plenty of hay for the horse to munch on, and not to forget the carrot for a snack.
Customer Reviews:
Endless dramas can be created while learning about horses.......2005-03-08
A laminated front and back fold-out for young readers to have hours of enjoyment creating their own horse dramas with the colorful reusable stickers.
In addition to acting out horse scenes, children will learn interesting information about the care of horses such as feeding, grooming, mucking out a stall, how to be safe around horses, the ground manners, tacking up, and types of riding.
The 80 reusable stickers along with the Horse play tips in each topic is fun and excellent learning about horses that children will want to play over and over for ages 4 to 8. New horse dramas are endless as far as the child's imagination will go. Excellent play while you learn book.

music too loud, otherwise good product.......2007-02-14
my baby loves to play the automatic tunes, it actually helped her to go to sleep. i rate it a 4 and not a 5 as the music is too loud and there is no volume control so we had to tape the speaker several times to soften the sound

A Pony's Tale (My Little Pony).......2005-07-27
My 5 and 3 1/2 yr olds enjoy me reading these books very much.
Book Description
In these two moving early plays, Mamet displays the humor, sensitivity, and ear for language that have made him one of the most celebrated playwrights in American theater today.
Customer Reviews:
Two Fascinating Early Shorts.......2004-08-23
Before Mamet was Mamet, with the staccato dialogue and repetitive dialogue, and before he got knee-deep into genre writing and film-making, these two plays were written.
REUNION (1M 1F, 43 pgs and multiple scenes) is the story of a father re-establishing contact with his estranged daughter. It is written in a sort of blank verse which is possibly what caused Edith Olvier to praise it in The New Yorker as "a poem for two voices -- a distinguished and remarkable one." It is certainly distinguished from Mamet's later work, the plot as it is having very little forward momentum. But it is quite moving and excellent and a great soft introduction for actors who want to learn to 'speak Mamet.'
DARK PONY (1M 1childF, 10 pgs) is another father/daughter story and possibly the simplest play I've ever read. It seems to be informed by Bruno Bettleheim's ideas about the power of stories told to children set forth in THE USES OF ENCHANTMENT, a book that Mamet has acknowledged as having great influence on him. The story is this: as the father and daughter drive home (from where, we don't know), he passes the time by telling her a fairy-tale-like story about a handsome brave and the eponymous pony. The subtext of the tale is: everything will be okay. Like I said, it is a simple play, but I imagine it can be quite moving in performance.
Longtime fans of Mamet will want to read this to see a completely different side of the maestro; Mamet virgins will find this collection an easy way to get into Mamet. Those in between might prefer to work their way through the AMERICAN BUFFALOs and SPEED-THE-PLOWs before turning back to the start of it all.

Not your plain-Jane garter stitch scarves.......2007-07-28
Beautifully written patterns with skill level ranging from ambitious beginner to knitting pro. Knitted Misty Garden for a friend and fell in love with it's feathery, open look. Definitely recommend.
Great Patterns, But..........2007-07-25
The layout of the book is funky. I love the patterns and the directions are clear, as well as the charts. The problem is the photography, I believe the publisher was trying to be a bit "artsy" with the layout and it just doesn't work. If you can hang with that then I would get the book.
Interesting patterns, VERY bad photography..........2007-06-04
When I purchased this book, I had read the reviews and noted a reference to "bad photography." Because I had Pam Allen's and Ann Budd's WRAP STYLE, which has beautiful photos, I thought the photography could not be too bad. Well it is TOO bad! I am an experienced knitter who does a lot of my own patterns and occasionally buy books to look at the photos for ideas and inspiration. Fuzzy photos of knitwear do NOT inspire!
What knitting books should be .......2007-04-19
I can't help but have a lot of respect for Pam Allen. The patterns in this book are challenging and elegant and spark curiosity. There's an effort made to include a variety of styles and techniques and it's just very well put together. Would highly recommend it.
My favorite knitting book.......2007-03-12
This is the first knitting book I bought when I learned to knit two years ago and it's still my favorite. Even as a beginner I knew I would soon be able to knit Beads of Earth - stockineete stitch with some beads, Misty Garden - knit, purl, yarnover and knit 2 together, Midwest Moonlight - add slip, slip, knit, and Ruffles - short rows. Here and There Cables is a good first-time cable project. But I'm not saying that this is a book for beginner's, just that beginner's can knit some very beautiful scarves without needing advanced skills.
Since I don't have much time to knit I now consider myself intermediate at best, but Vintage Velvet and Lady Eleanor's Entrelace Stole are within my reach.
Others have commented on the blurry photograph but I think the pictures are beautiful and inspiring. The book is about scarves, not about complicated garments that you need to see details of what the neckline looks like, how long the sleeves are, etc.
I highly recommend this book unless you don't want to knit scarves.
Customer Reviews:
Not useful for the gardener or landscaper.......2007-09-19
This book is intended for plant scientists, and I was astounded to find how useless a gigantic tome like this can be to a gardener. For starters, in 1188 pages there are zero photos. There is zero color. There's a huge number of amateur black ink drawings that suggest major details of leaves, etc., but no refinements. For visual identification purposes this book is near-useless, so it cannot be thought of as a woody plant encyclopedia. Also, the author has a peculiar manifest of political correctness: he won't speak ill of a plant. So, for example, the discussion of Rhus never mentions that at least three species (poison ivy, oak, sumac) are known for inducing allergic skin reaction after contact. You'd better know that and be able to recognize these because to Dirr that's unmentionable. Nor can I find mention that any berry, leaf, or bark is poisonous though to be fair, I didn't check all 1188 pages. Nor will I; I exchanged my copy for the same author's "Hardy Trees and Shrubs" which is what I should have bought to begin with. It has everything the scientific Manual lacks. That's Dirr's book for gardeners, and still gives you a taste of his political correctness peccadilloes.
Dirr is the Most Comprehensive.......2007-07-05
I am an OSU Master Gardener and we are taught to look to the best experts when we research information for ourselves or to give out to the public. This book, Dirr's "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" and Carl Whitcomb's "Know It and Grow It III" are the best references a person can use when researching woody trees and shrubs for a landscape. Although Whitcomb's book has a map showing regions where the plant would grow best, Dirr's book has by far more trees and shrubs reviewed with more cultivars listed also. Additionally, Dirr's book is listed entirely by scientific name making it easy to locate information about a plant quickly.
"Manual" is the right name for this book........2007-03-06
I bought this book because other books that I have by Dirr are worth every cent I have spent on them. This book is no different. No glossy pictures are present, but instead there are excellent, detailed line drawings of the identifying features of plant leaves and twigs. What this book does offer that other books I have read do not, is exhaustive information on just about every woody plant one might ever encounter. This book is a true "manual"; it is packed with information on every aspect of selecting, planting, managing, and propagating woody plants.
I doubt this book is essential for the casual gardener, but if you want a serious treatment of trees and shrubs for reference, this book is just what you are seeking. I bought the hardback because I knew that this is a book that will need to take years of abuse.
The best textbook I've ever bought.......2007-02-26
Easily worth ten times the price; an indispensable guide for any horticultural student. Contains encyclopedic knowledge, written in a friendly and approachable way. My copy is already tagged with post-its and notes in the margins; I will no doubt be using this regularly for my whole career.
Great resource.......2007-02-12
This is a wonderful book for those with at least moderate plant knowledge. Very valuable for looking up the difference between varities, but there are no color pictures.

Customer Reviews:
No Bribe Needed Says Marshall D. Rosenberg.......2007-03-09
The topic is of great importance and the message is clear.
This book(let) is not widely useful with very young kids, but I like to have the non-violent communication luggage on board early on; I am sure it will come in handy once my kids grow to be the age that I be tempted to threaten or bribe them! However, I think I need to read some more of Rosenberg's to fully understand his paradigm and communication guidelines.
Straight forward.......2006-03-19
It's probably stuff that we wall already know but it's phrased in such a simple & straight forward way that I felt coached and supported in my parenting.
Trenchant tome.......2005-08-21
This is a very concise little book that is written in friendly, conversational prose, as if the author were a good friend talking to you on your couch. As a busy, attachment-minded mother, I liked that it took me only half an hour or so to read, but I found myself spending more time reflecting on the lessons in the book because they were not what I was accustomed to thinking, even with my education and training as a psychotherapist. For example, our purpose-driven, aggressive society is not used to taking the time to speak very consciously and be aware of all the judgments we automatically make in our minds that manifest in our speech. This book is about becoming more aware of how we treat our children (we would seldom treat even a stranger with the everyday brusqueness and condescension we show our children, for example, the author states). I liked the small examples of everyday life that the author takes from his own experiences with his children. He talks about how our requests for things are actually thinly guised demands, and writes, "One of the most unfortuante results of making our objective to get our children to do what we want, rather than having our objective be for all of us to get what we want, is that eventually our children will be hearing a demand in whatever we are asking." The problem here is not honoring people's autonomy, which is an innate human quality that becomes threatened whenever we sense we are being forced or pushed into something. To become more effective, compassionate parents who enjoy our kids rather than resent their "disobedience", the author show us ways to guide them in life while respecting their autonomy and basic human needs to make independent choices. The author wisely distinguishes between age-appropriate choices within their reach -- the toddler, for example, who, when given the opportunity, after being role modeled generosity by his parents, chooses independently to share candy with his siblings -- and those choices that are non-negotiable, such as playing in the middle of a busy street.
Though I haven't yet mentioned it, my favorite part of the book was learning about how just about every painful or uncomfortable emotion we experience is an unmet need. This shifts the thinking away from evaluating children and ourselves in a moralistic sense and moves towards "a language based on needs". Inside the back cover of the book is a helpful table listing emotions we feel when our needs are not being met, and very simple and respectful ways we can ask others to meet our needs without trampling upon theirs.
