Book Description
From Art Deco–inspired geometric designs to traditional checkerboard stripes and elaborate motifs, this guide helps crafters rediscover crochet with more than 200 fabulous block patterns. Employing traditional styles and contemporary colors, crocheted blocks inspire crafters to create a dynamic palette of color, pattern, and texture by mixing, matching, and combining. Step-by-step instructions accompany each pattern, along with stunning photographs that encourage crocheters to explore a range of color combinations and coordinates. A directory of blocks is cross-referenced with symbols that describe the techniques used and the degree of difficulty, and each pattern is designed so that finished blocks are the same size when they are worked in yarn of the same weight. A useful refresher course of crochet stitches and techniques is included, as are patterns for edgings and instructions on making fringes to finish off afghans in style.

200 Crochet Blocks for Blankets, Throws, and Afghans: Crochet Squares to Mix and Match .......2007-08-26
This is a great book for many... granny square designs! You'll love it! Many "traditional" designs and lot of more "modern" looking grannies! It's a have to have for your crochet library!
Helpful survey of crochet blocks.......2007-08-22
As noted, there are not 200 unique crochet blocks. That being said, there is a wide assortment of styles, including a variety of flower shaped blocks that have become popular recently, inspired by Japanese crochet books. The book would have been improved if it included diagrams, but most American books seem to use text exclusively. Also, it's worth noting that all of the blocks in the book are square.
There are some nice suggestions for how to mix and match the pattern to make afghans, but I think the book is useful as a reference for creating different blocks, which could be used more dynamically than the author actually suggests -- she is basically confined to the blanket genre where they could be used for any number of other applications such as scarves or bags.
Nice, inspiring book!.......2007-08-02
I'm really glad I ordered this book. It's very inspiring and has lots of lovely squares to mix and play around! It also gives axamples of the same squares made with different colors. What I most like about it is that it doesn't bring "closed projects", but encourages you to create your own - choosing colors and squares combinations.
It just didn't receive 5 stars because there are no diagrams and I prefer following diagrams instead of written instructions...
Really different.......2007-05-18
I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful some of the squares in this book are. As a novice, the patterns seem easy to follow. The sheer number of squares and the fact that most of them are really different from what you see elsewhere, makes me very glad I came across this book.
I think I found a mistake if anyone can confirm: square 92 Victorian Lace. Round 1 begins with CH4 and then DC into the ring, but the rest of the stitches into the ring are TR. I think the first DC is supposed to be a TR.
Good for ideas.......2007-05-08
So it's not quite 200 bcse some blocks are repeated with different color patterns, but it's excellent for generating ideas and inspiring pattern creation!

This extraordinary book presents scenarios of one family's therapy experience and explains what underlies each encounter. You will discover the general patterns that are common to all families-stress, polarization and escalation, scapegoating, triangulation, blaming, and the diffusion of identity--and you will gain a vivid understanding of the intriguing field of family therapy.

A New Paradigm for Me.......2007-06-06
This book was recommended to me by a psychologist as a new way to look at how we each develop in a system (in particular family relationships), and that system must be taken into account. It did just that. Through the story of a family in crisis, alternated with chapters of description and consideration of why the crisis develops, the reader is invited to understand how we can view their issues as part of a whole. For me some of the more important points included:
* How we behave and what we feel is greatly influenced by the family we are in and the dynamics of that family. For example, a daughter in the family "is elected" to become a problem because the parents need something to draw their attention away from the problems of their marriage.
* How we behave and what we feel actually can start way before we're born in grandparents and great-grandparents family dynamics.
* That communication and agreements can happen within the family even without the knowledge it's happened.
* Not to underestimate the need in healthy family dynamics for conflict.
* That healthy dynamics require honest communication of emotions we are feeling.
* Exercise of our respective authorities (parents for instance having more experience than kids so show it) are needed in healthy families.
* many more things
I did find some of the descriptions of behavior felt dated such as Freud framing more of the discussion than I currently hear in the field (both for his contributions and failures)and I believe we'd currently put different emphasis on some theories. For this I dropped a star off the rating. Nevertheless it opened my eyes to a wider understanding of myself and the dynamics of intimate human relationships around me, that become part of who I am.
Looking at the family as a whole, not the sum of parts.......2006-10-10
I first read this gem many years ago, long before I became a therapist myself. What an eye opener! Even reading the first Chapter (it's all of 11 pages) is enough to get you thinking in a fresh way about family problems. It certainly worked that way for me.
The book really is about Carl Whitaker, M.D. Augustus Napier was his understudy. Whitaker worked within the idea of family-as-a-system without limiting himself too much with theory. This allowed his methods to evolve as he treated more and more families. And it allowed a book like this to be written: lucid because it makes so much sense, dramatic because so much happens in the family whose treatment it describes, hopeful because it shows how much impact family therapy can have.
It wasn't that he didn't know theory. It's that as person he was intuitive, following his gut time and again, and eventually coming out with some guidelines for other family therapists, such as: -The therapist doesn't control the content of a family session, but she or he does control who will be there (this is dramatically dealt with in the first few chapters), -The therapist can cause change by stirring things up and getting family members to look at problems freshly, and -The therapist's job is to re-vision the problem as a communication that is somehow functional.
Typical is Whitaker's view that often the "identified patient" in the family is a stand-in for some other problem that the family cannot face without the help of a therapist.
Since this great book was written family therapy went through a boom time, was very popular. Then it became integrated into what is often called multi-modal therapy, in which family members sometimes come in individually, sometimes in small groups (ie the parents one time, the children another), sometimes as a whole. Still, it is necessary to understand family systems in order to work this way.
People looking into therapy will find this a great explanation of family issues that otherwise may seem baffling. It might also be a motivator to treatment.
Therapists trained individually will find this a fine introduction to working with families. They will also benefit from reading other luminaries in this field.
good resource for budding therapists.......2005-10-24
Napier's self-reflections as well as his piecing together a fascinating case study makes this book an inspiring, if a little dated, read for those considering or heading into family and marriage therapy.
Family in Therapy.......2005-10-02
Awesome book about family therapy. Am studying for Masters in Family Therapy so this is perfect vicarious way to look behind the scenes (inside the therapists heads) as they enter disjointed world of the subject family. They share what they are feeling, thinking and why they do what they do. An excellent example of whatworking with a co-counselor is supposed to be like. Dynamics of all the Relationships exposed in easy to follow honest terms.
Old book, still valid in many areas.......2005-09-22
We used this book in a MFT class recently at UCCS and I found it to be quite insightful in understanding the dynamics of family systems. The book covers one family through a long therapuetic process. Even though this book was written in the early 1970's and has a few outdated techniques, the scope of therapy, witnessing the impact of illuminating family-of-origin issues and having an intimate view of the personal agony therapy forces people to work through was very educational from a student counselor perspective.
Book Description
Dr. Lillian Rubin's tenth book examines the lives of women as they grow from daughters into mothers and move on into the intimidating territory of old age. Tangled Lives uses pivotal events from Lillian Rubin's own life-her mother's passing, her own dramatic brush with death, her daughter's illness, and her seventy-fifth birthday-to illuminate the powerful influence the mother-daughter bond has on a woman's identity, and the profound changes that come with aging.

I feel I'm talking to a close friend.......2000-10-26
Once I told my 3 year old son that I'm no longer growing bigger, but older, he was so supprised, so was I. As I'm getting close to 30, I'm really wondering how to deal with getting old, also wondering how other women deal with it. But I never dare to ask anyone.
I had one month vacation back to China in August. Instead enjoying the visit, I was dealing with my brother's vanishing due to depress. And I was facing how sad my mom was and how she looked much older than her age, my father's fragile emotion. We also have to know how to support my 90 year old grandpa and 80 year old grandma.
My mother-in-law just got her US citizenship after 10 years jobless in US. She was a professor back in China. When I got married 5 years ago, I was so astonished by my mother-in-law's temper.
With these, I have questions and fears in my mind.
Reading Lillian Rubin's book didn't help me to resolve the tangle in my life, but it does help me to get answers to my Whys and face the fears in my life. I'm so glad she wrote this book and share her own experiences with us.
Courageous, revealing, and wise.......2000-10-25
Intimations of mortality form the framework for this eloquent memoir. Lillian Rubin is a brilliant, empathic woman, who over the years has bravely probed such topics as children who survive trauma, and families in transition. Now, at 75, she faces her own journey toward the inevitable, and generously shares her thoughts, fears, and insights. Rubin bares her psyche in this frank and forthright exploration of what is like to grow old--to savor the time remaining and explore the injuries and lessons of the past. Rubin shares with readers her own courageous meditations on mortality, as she faces her 75th birthday. When the fates collide to present the author with reason to worry not only about her daughter's health, her husband's well being, and her own life-threatening health crisis all at once, Rubin looks at the landscape of love, aging and loss with unflinching clarity. What does it mean to grow old? Where do faith, forgiveness, and redemption fit in? On page after page, I marvelled at the author's candor, at her ability to expose herself, to publically take that final, private tally of losses and gains. But by doing so, Rubin gives us all a gift. Above all, I found this to be a hopeful book, probing--and celebrating--the ties between mother and daughter, and underscoring the possibility of improving the landscape of love from generation to generation.
Book Description
A magnificent saga of love and war, of political conflict and imminent change, of two women-
Against the vast and formidable backdrop of pre-revolutionary Russia, the lives of two families become inextricably entwined.

But the life of protected royalty in St. Petersburg cannot be isolated forever from the forces that buffet the mighty Russian Empire. While grand dukes and their duchesses celebrate New Year's at the Tsar's legendary Winter Palace, revolution brews and war in the Balkans seems inevitable. Caught in the crosscurrents of history, who will survive?

Strong Story Line.......2006-05-15
I read this whole series a couple of years ago and after reading many, many books since, I still hold that this is my favorite book. The whole series is great. I knew nothing of Russian history before reading this series, so I learned quite a bit! Though the book is full of historical facts, it is written in a way that doesn't make you feel like you are reading a history book. The story is strong. After this series, Pella picks up on the characters again several years later in her "Daughters of Fortune" series. (Another great series!)
Hope you have time.......2005-08-29
The whole Russians series is well worth getting. They are slow at times, but they always pick up in the end. There's a lot of groundwork that needs to be laid b/f the politics and intrigue can make sense.
The characters are interesting though. Phillips and Pella do fairly well writing duo.
Stirred Every Emotion!.......2004-07-05
I loved this book so much! After reading Pella's Daughters of Fortune series, I went looking for other books she had written and came upon The Russians. The first book is excellent. I felt every emotion I can think of. I was happy, sad, frightened, angry, and moved! Anna was a shy country girl with a quiet strength that helped her move her way up from kitchen girl to the personal maid of a princess in a matter of months. Anna and Princess Katrina teach each other many things as Russia is on the brink of war. I don't want to spoil the rest of the book so I'll stop here! I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of historical fiction or Judith Pella!
Compelling Reading..........2002-10-16
The first of the seven books enticed me, as did the 2, 3, and 4. But as the origanal characters began to die off, so did my interest in the series.
A compelling tale of faith and friendship.......2002-08-23
Once you finish reading this story of a set of young adults coming of age, you will immediately want to start on book two. You see, this is what happened to me, except I didn't know about books three through seven until I was well into book #2! I finally finished the series earlier this year and consider it to be a major accomplishment (and a very fulfilling one). I must say that after book seven I was disappointed that I will no longer be hearing of Anna Buerenin and the illustrious characters that touched her life.
This series is typically categorized by bookstores as "religious fiction". I will say that there is an underlying message about God (after all religion plays a huge part of Russian history) but it was simply woven into the story subtly and relevantly. I have read other Pella books and found this to be the case with them as well.
This book was the start of my infatuation with historical fiction and I am thankful for it. I do recommend all seven in the series - read them, although it may take a while!
