Book Description
Lonesome George is a five-foot long, 900 pound tortoise aged somewhere between 60 and 200 years. The last of his kind, he was discovered in 1971 on the remote island of Pinta in the Galapagos Islands, from which tortoises had supposedly been extinct for years. Since then, he has lived in the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) on Santa Cruz on the off chance that there is a Pinta female somewhere, or that science will come up with a way of reproducing him, and resurrecting his species and the Pinta population. Today, Lonesome George has come to embody the challenges of conservation. His story captures the mystery, complexity, and fragility of the worlds most biologically diverse placethe Galapagos Islandsa place where sexual dysfunction, Charles Darwin, kidnapping, cloning, DNA fingerprinting, and ecotourism have left a complex web of influences. In the end, Georges story echoes the experience of conservationists world wide.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent read.......2006-11-21
This is a truly wonderful book with a great blend of humor and scientific story-telling. Current issues and historical anecdotes interwine seemlessly as the saga of Lonesome George unfolds. A must for Galapagos travelers past and future.
Iconic hardback.......2006-04-27
If anyone has been to the Galapagos (or is intending to) this is a must-have. In fact, anyone with an interest in Darwinism and environmentalism should also make sure they have a read. Henry Nicholls has done a great job of adding humour and fascinating anecdotes to some very serious topics, notably the human impact on this sensitive archipelago, and our role in protecting endangered species.
But what really makes this such a special read is the insight it gives to the life of poor Lonesome George. If I had to criticise, it would be that the book fails to consider the pressure that a myriad of scentific observers and visitors is piling on to the poor fellow. Its no surprise he feels shy about reproducing when constantly being reminded that he is an 'icon' and 'last of his species' (although the pretty swiss volunteer clearly tried her best to make him relax).
The World's Loneliest Bachelor Gets His Time To Shine.......2006-03-15
Lonesome George is not just the last of his sub-species of Galapagos giant tortoise, he is also an icon for animal conservation. In Henry Nicholls' new book, the very first full book on Lonesome George since his chance discovery 1n 1972, we get a crystal clear picture on what it will take to preserve George's race: the Pinta race of giant Galapagos tortoise. And though, the chances for survival seem slim, Nicholls digs up every conceivable speck of hope and lays it out for us in his own quirky style.
When I'd finished reading the book I was left with a feeling that I knew George intimately and that I understood the hurdles biologists, zoologists, conservationists and tortoise lovers are up against in trying to save the Pinta race.
Not to be missed is the part about George's Swedish human 'girlfriend' and their steamy escapades. The book also features extensive examples of other animals in peril and how they've been saved or lost. A joy of a read packed with hard facts, moving passages and important lessons. Go George!

Customer Reviews:
unfortunately lacking in info........2000-04-18
This had the potential to be a wonderful book, but it is lacking in the information that you would expect to get in the books of this series. The diseases and disorders section is esentially non-existant and the specific care of the different species is far too generalized and totally lacks detail. It is a very good book for beginners or those looking for overviews of the major species and their care, but that is about it. Still waiting for the Tortoise Manual - which is long overdue.
A must have book for your turtle library.......1999-12-24
This book is an excellent source of information for good turtle- tortoise husbandry. Robert DominguezV.P. Chino Valley Branch, Caliifornia Turtle and Tortoise Club (CTTC)CVBCTTC@WEBTV.NET
The best book I have ever read on the care of tortoises.......1998-10-11
I have used this book extensively to help me care for several species of tortoises, Leopards, Sulcatas, Redfoot and Yellowfoots. The content is highly accurate and every tortoise keeper should use this book as his "bible" of care specs.
A bargain and a fine little book.......1998-04-03
The author's wide knowledge of herpetology and many guides have saved countless thousands of reptile and amphibian lives. This book adds to that humane record.
Product Description
The Tortoise Diet uses the old fable of the Tortoise and the Hare as an analogy to expose the fallacies of quick-weight loss "hare-brained" diets. Quick weight loss always results in the loss of a huge amount of muscle tissue, which is the calorie-burning machinery of the body. This loss of muscle always results in a slowed metabolism, a weight-loss plateau, discouragement and eventual re-gaining of any weight that was lost! The Tortoise Diet teaches the reader a new way to look at weight loss by providing a series of step-by-step assignments to learn twenty-five essential habits to lose weight slowly, but permanently.

The Tortoise Diet - Win The Race To Lose!.......2007-07-18
We've all experienced what the author refers to as "hare-brained" diets, crash diets low in calories and high in failure. The first week of these plans seems almost reasonable (given that we are willing to try anything to get the extra weight off). We even lose a few pounds, comprised mostly of retained water. Then, suddenly our metabolism shuts down. The cravings become crazy and within no time we have fallen off the diet wagon once again.
Patricia Church had tried many of these diets and had only succeeded in gaining more and more weight. Finally, she tried something different. Gradually, over three years of conscious living, she lost 120 lbs. Not only did she not feel starved but she actually gained energy and motivation as the pounds slowly dropped away.
The Tortoise Diet looks at more realistic long term weight loss accomplished simply by eating smaller more frequent meals, exercising, and getting rid of the junk food. There are tips on how to increase your metabolism and to protect against loss of muscle. The author also includes some healthy recipes, some of which are quite tasty.
Weight Loss Secrets Win the Race.......2007-02-04
"By chipping away at bad habits, one at a time, you'll soon see a noticeable difference in your life...if you make the commitment to begin your `journey of a thousand miles,' and do it one step at a time, you will succeed." ~ pg. 5
The Tortoise Diet is not a quick solution to weight loss, it is a long-term solution to permanent weight loss. In this informative book you learn how to achieve your perfect weight through a series of lifestyle changes.
Patricia S. Church discusses fad diets and explains why eating seven specific items each day will help you lose more weight. Is a Low-Carb Diet really the best choice? Tricks like eating fruit after dinner and making sure you have vinegar on your salad are tried and true diet winners. If you love cooking there are ideas for blending your own flour or using stevia in your recipes. Some of the recipes include:
Olive Tamponade
Spinach-Artichoke Dip
Pesto Sauce
Mango Salsa
Thai Chicken Salad
Overall this is an excellent book that sums up the diet choices and then points the way to lifestyle changes that will help you keep the weight off for the long-term. Food Planning and Preparation Habits, Exercise Habits and Energy Management Habits are all discussed.
The meal plans and dinners at the end of the book are helpful if you are trying to figure out anything from a 125 to a 575 calorie meal plan. Instead of having to calculate each food, you can select a group of foods and work it into your daily meal plan. The recipes are also well suited to anyone counting calories as portions are given according to the final calories.
~The Rebecca Review
The diet that isn't REALLY a diet.......2006-05-14
Here is a collection of life-changing ideas that alter your eating habits forever. You get a series of training assignments, such as eating more fiber, jotting notes in a notebook (it's surprising if you do this; how many meals last week did you grab in the car because you were rushed? And were they salads and water and a small burger or were they double-quarter-pounders with extra fries?) How much do you really drink? Is it one glass of wine (a small one?) or is it two big beakers a night? These things add up.
Some of the habits are really helpful, not only to dieters but to the poor eater; case in point, eating protein along with carbohydrates at each meal. I know someone who is skinny and always hungry. A hardboiled egg or a slice or two of meat with a starchy snack replaced his endless empty munching of cookies.
In the appendix are meal plans graded by how many calories. Not everyone should be eating 1100 calories a day, so it helps to know what constitutes a 525 calorie meal, for example. Here's a 550 Calorie meal:
275 Calorie serving of whole grain, high fiber cereal, 8 ounces non-fat milk, 1 slice whole grain toast, 1 tbs no sugar all fruit jam spread, one orange.
Interesting; this meal is very high in fiber, and it isn't particularly low in calories (300 and under.)
The author also gives hints on taming the craving monster, if you want something creamy (no-sugar pudding versus fatty ice cream, crunch--carrots or peapods versus chips.)
Finally, there are charts for progress and a discussion of alternative methods like pills, surgery and liquid diets, with their pros and (mostly) cons.
This is probably the most complete eating book I've ever read. You might never need another. Big thumbs up here to Pat Church.
An excellent and "user friendly" compendium of weight-loss ideals.......2006-05-08
Very highly recommended for health and weight conscious readers, The Tortoise Diet: Win The Race To Lose by Patricia S. Church offers a series of outstanding weight-loss techniques for an effective and healthy way to loose significant weight. Introducing readers to and extensive set of step-by-step assignments, The Tortoise Diet engages readers in a permanent weight loss program with twenty-five essential habits, realistic solutions, and a wealth of attractive menus and compatible recipes. The Tortoise Diet is an excellent and "user friendly" compendium of weight-loss ideals from the writing of a woman who experienced significant weight loss first hand.
If you are truely ready to keep it off...................2006-04-25
This is the last diet book you will ever need. If you follow the principles outlined in the Tortoise book, and take the slow and steady approach to weight loss described in the book, you will have changed the behaviors that have allowed food to be your enemy rather than your ally. There is also online support to help chart your progress. This is optional, but I highly recommend it. You are not alone, so what are you waiting for?

Book Description
The Essential Companion Workbook To The National Bestseller Raising Your Spirited Child,
In this companion workbook, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka brings readers into her world-famous workshops, where she offers parents and educators insights, emotional support and proven strategies for dealing with spirited children. The key word that distinguishes spirited children from other children is "more" -- more intense, more persistent, more sensitive and more uncomfortable with change. Through exercises, observations and dialogue from actual groups, Kurcinka helps readers learn to identify the triggers that lead to tantrums and challenging behaviors. Included are
- clues to help you identify the little things that can make or break a day
- tips for profiling your child's temperament and your own
- cues that indicate intensity is rising
- successful strategies for reducing and eliminating power struggles
By combining the intuition and compassion gained from parenting a spirited child with the wisdom of an expert who has worked with thousands of families, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka helps parents and educators view their unique challenge with perseverance, flexibility, sensitivity, and, most of all, enjoyment.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic !!.......2007-01-12
This is a fabulous book. My child to a tee with great suggestions on how to raise these types of children.
Great.......2006-03-09
The first time I read the book, was without the workbook. I bought the book and workbook once I returned the borrowed one to it's owner. Great investment! Helps put everything into practice.
Does your childs have ADHD?.......2004-03-24
The author does not appear to have a real life understanding of ADHD. On page 35 she claims that "the difference between a perceptive spirited child and a child experiencing ADHD is that the spirited child will notice everything going on around her, but will be able to process it more quickly and ultimately be able to focus on and complete a task... A child EXPERIENCING ADHD (as if it is a condition that comes and goes) will not be able to process information quickly ...will be unable to figure out what is the most important information and will not be able to focus on and complete a task. In part I agree. Children with ADHD have a hard time selecting the most important facts to focus on. However, their brains process information so quickly that their brains have already moved on to another subject, questions, curiosity, etc. before their hand or mouth or body has caught up with it. When I read her viewpoints on ADHD I felt frustrated. It was very hard to take her advice to heart because she doesn't seem to have any real life experience with ADHD. Her books (I bought two of them) are currently sitting unused in my bookshelf.
My qualification to speak on this real life viewpoint... I am an ADHD adult with 4 children. Three of them have ADHD(2 w/hyperactivity and 1 w/inattentive). I currently homeschool them because the teachers could not meet their needs.
My "bible" on parenting.......2002-04-20
I have read the book twice and continue to reference it. This book has helped me understand my 7 year old son's behavior. I first read it when he was 4. My son is very intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and energetic. He cannot handle any kind of change if he is not forewarned. He notices every little detail, will argue till he is blue in the face, and cannot sit while eating at the dinner table!!
Now we are able to prevent many "blowups" because of the clues this book has taught us to look for. I even realized that I am a spirited person as well and that is why he and I were clashing w/ a lot of things unlike he and his father. I cannot praise this book enough. I will constantly refer to it and I plan on giving his wife a copy when he gets married!! Thank you Mary Sheedy Kurcinka!!
More practical books out there.......2001-06-28
I found the book 'Raising your Spirited Child' useful and helpful but did not find this work book very practical. It was mostly written in the setting of a class or workshop which made it ponderous to read. Although this was a very warm and personal approach it was just not very concise. I found there was too much emphasis on reasoning and adapting to the child instead of teaching the child to adapt. I realise that with spirited children a parent must be keenly aware of the childs limitations and that a little planning goes a long way in reducing stress. But I also think that a parent must be very careful not to go too far as to lower expectations and make the family child centered. You don't have to be your childs personal therapist in order to be a good parent.
This book does not cover the role of negative reinforcement which is so prevalent with spirited children who are misbehaving. Without this understanding we could not begin to address the issues affecting our own spirited child. For this I would strongly recommend any parent of a spirited child to read: "The Manipulative Child: How To Regain control and Raise Resilient, Resourceful, and Independent Kids".
This book does offer hope and encouragement which I guess we all need when struggling day to day with a demanding child. Nothing prepares a parent for dealing with a spirited child and they put every parenting assumption and technique to the ultimate test. Although my wife and I did not find this work book helpful for our situation, it does add to the first book which we found very helpful.
For our spirited child, the books "Ain't Misbehavin" by William P Garvey, and "Setting Limits" by Robert J MacKenzie, helped us the most. By teaching our child self control, it allowed the positive spirited traits to overshadow the negative ones.
