2 out of 5 stars Out of date.......1999-07-08

This book show its age. It was written over 10 yeares ago, when it was thougth that iguanas were carnivore(they are folivores). The only parts that are really good are the list of plants and a few of the tips on setting up tanks. It has soome really nice photos too. I would not really reccomend it. It was proabably very cutting edge when it came out, but a lot (not most) of the info is out of date. I reccomend buying a newer book.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable information about 10 popular herbs.......2002-07-12

The Green Guide to Herb Gardening is a very wonderful book that takes ten of the most popular herbs and explores them fully; from planting, care and nurturing of these plants to the harvesting, storage and culinary uses. There are some wonderful recipes for herbs here and I look forward to using some of them. This book covers it all. A must have primer for any beginner or anyone who who has never grown anything.
But what makes this book special is that it doesn't stop there. This book also covers the herb history, magic and folklore of these ten herbs, being basil, calendula, chamomile, chives, garlic, lemon balm, mint, oregano, parsley and thyme. Then Ms. Harding adds herbal teas, aromatic and ornamental uses and some simple magical uses. This now makes this book a very useful handbook worth owning by anyone.
Easy to read and follow, Ms. Harding explains everything fully and presents the material in a well organized and easy to follow format. This book is well researched, and a fountain of information on these herbs. I am hoping she plans to do another book on 10 more herbs, as I found this one a valuable aid to be used.

Millie Owen was a New Yorker transplanted to rural Vermont. She arrived in the country knowing little about growing things but dug into the subject with enthusiastic dedication, teaching herself all about gardening and edible plants through reading and by trial and error. Her ultimate goal was to enjoy cultivating and harvesting from the wild the widest possible assortment of edible botanicals, including greens, herbs, and aromatics such as garlic, onions, and horseradish.

A Cook's Guide to Growing Herbs, Greens & Aromatics, written in 1997, is now part of The Cooks Classic Library, that growing collection of eternal culinary works from Lyons Press. In this book, Owen shares her enthusiasm and dispenses advice with warmth and intelligence. She reminds you that convenience should be your first thought when planning a garden. Eager for you to have home-grown edible plants at hand, she tells how even apartment dwellers can raise herbs. Typical of her quirky practicality, she suggests using grow-lights in a closet or under the bathroom sink, so you can devote the space on sunny window sills for more visually attractive flora.

Most of A Cook's Guide consists of 47 enchanting sections on individual edibles, from asparagus to wormwood. Among them, Owen's take on lamb's quarters--"Free spinach!"--is typically crammed with poetic images, detailed information on when to pick this versatile wild green, a precise inventory of its rich nutritional value, and a simple, appealing recipe for eggs baked in ramekins lined with blanched greens deliciously blended with grated Gruyère cheese. The sections on most plants include one or more recipes. From Seafood Grilled on a Bed of Basil--as simple as it sounds--to her unique Green Chicken Tandoori Grilled with Potatoes, a dish loaded with fresh coriander, Owen makes your mouth water at the prospect of clear, fresh flavors.

Spend an afternoon with Owen and your view of everything, from utilitarian onions to purslane, a weed "uncannily tuned to the sound of soil being cultivated," will change. Following her lead, and spurred on by Karl Stuecklen's friendly drawings, you may add mildly peppery violet leaves to salads and start tinting your Arroz con Pollo, the Spanish chicken and rice stew, with golden marigold petals. Keep this book in mind for anyone you know who gardens, as well as for cooks. --Dana Jacobi

In Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, psychology professor John Gottman explores the emotional relationship between parents and children. It's not enough to simply reject an authoritarian model of parenting, Gottman says. A parent needs to be concerned with the quality of emotional interactions. Gottman, author of Why Marriages Succeed or Fail, and coauthor Joan Declaire focus first on the parent (a "know thyself" approach), and provide a series of exercises to assess parenting styles and emotional self-awareness. The authors identify a five-step "emotion coaching" process to help teach children how to recognize and address their feelings, which includes becoming aware of the child's emotions; recognizing that dealing with these emotions is an opportunity for intimacy; listening empathetically; helping the child label emotions; setting limits; and problem-solving. Chapters on divorce, fathering, and age-based differences in emotional development help make Gottman's teachings detailed and useful. --Ericka Lutz

          Book Description

Intelligence That Comes from the Heart

Every parent knows the importance of equipping children with the intellectual skills they need to succeed in school and life. But children also need to master their emotions. Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child is a guide to teaching children to understand and regulate their emotional world. And as acclaimed psychologist and researcher John Gottman shows, once they master this important life skill, emotionally intelligent children will enjoy increased self-confidence, greater physical health, better performance in school, and healthier social relationships. Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child will equip parents with a five-step "emotion coaching" process that teaches how to:

          * Be aware of a child's emotions

          * Recognize emotional expression as an opportunity for intimacy and teaching

          * Listen empathetically and validate a child's feelings

          * Label emotions in words a child can understand

          * Help a child come up with an appropriate way to solve a problem or deal with an upsetting issue or situation

Written for parents of children of all ages, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child will enrich the bonds between parent and child and contribute immeasurably to the development of a generation of emotionally healthy adults.

5 out of 5 stars Needed for every family, especially new parents........2007-09-26

My sister and brother in law just had a baby and I was reading this for a class... everything that I've learned from this book has been applied to my new nephew and 2 year old niece and it's changed the dynamics of the family by a 10 fold!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and well written perspective on parenting.......2007-07-17

Dr. Gottman presents an intelligent and informative approach to parenting that teaches children appropriate behavior in a sensitive manner that helps both parents and children explore the underlying reasons for the child's misbehavior. I have found this especially useful when approaching my toddler's tantrums, and have often been able to convert her screams into rational discussion. There is also a chapter that would be particularly helpful for families experiencing marital discord or separation. The book's greatest weakness is that it doesn't discuss differences in children's temperament, which would have a big effect on how well a child might respond to this approach. Overall, though a very interesting and helpful read for parents and child professionals.

4 out of 5 stars teaching kids about emotions.......2007-01-03

This book helps parents understand how their personal philosophy about their own emotions influences what and how they teach their children about emotions, such as how to recognize, express, and control anger. The book provides a simple self-test to help parents understand what their philosopy is and how it impacts interactions with their children. For example, some parents do not permit their children to express anger at them while others are accepting of their children being openly angry with them. There are very different long-range implications of these different philosophies and parenting styles. This book helps parents to assess their own philosophy and consider changes in their parenting style.

Everything I am reading in this book makes so much logical sense in reflecting on my own experiences as a child and observing others and their interaction with children. I plan on reading it a second time...took notes in the columns for my husband and certainly plan on applying it in raising our son. A must read for ALL parents (especially future parents)!

5 out of 5 stars One of hte best parenting books!.......2002-07-12

You can find a lot of books about parenting, but many of them are just pop psychology, the solitary opinion of the author.
Gottman is definitely not one of them. He is known as one of the leading psychologists in the area of family and marriage psychology. This book presents the essence of his research findings about raising emotionally intelligent children.
His advise is surprisingly easy and is based on a 5 step model:
          1. Be aware of your child's emotion
          2. See your child's emotions as an opportunity to be close together
          3. Actively listen to your child and validate the feelings
          4. Help your child to verbalize his feelings
          5. Help your child solve problems, while setting clear limits

Gottman clearly explains how you can implement this 5-step-model in daily life and what to do when problems arise. His real life examples make reading really fun.
All in all, an excellent parenting book! As a supplement, I can also recommend the book by M. Seligman: "The optimistic child"

It can be difficult at first, but with patience, these ideas will create a bond between you and your child that you may not have known could exist.

          5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!.......1998-03-23

"Emotional Intelligence" has recently been recognized as an important life skill. A combination of important traits (including self-discipline, ability to handle anger appropriately, self-esteem, empathy, and social skills), emotional intelligence allows one to handle life's frustrations and to "work and play well with others." These skills have been shown as more important than I.Q. as predictors of success in one's personal relationships and career. This wonderful book teaches parents how to raise their children to have emotional intelligence. The book sees children's problems and frustrations as opportunities for "emotion coaching" - helping them learn how to deal with their emotions. The book also identifies four "parenting styles" - two of these styles react negatively to chldren's negative emotions, one style accepts them but doesn't help the child deal with them, and the "Emotion Coaching" style accepts the emotions and teaches the child what to do with them. I wish my parents had had this book - I was a "difficult" child, prone to tantrums, etc., but much of my difficulty came from feeling frustrated and not knowing what to do about it. My parents were loving, but didn't really know how to handle the problem. This book will create greater understanding between parent and child, and will help the child grow up to be an emotionally healthy adult.

Leave your son an answering machine message from his incomplete English paper or send your daughter an e-mail from her overdue science assignment. These are two of the refreshing suggestions about how to happily cope with a hormone-charged teenager who is ignoring his/her homework in Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers. A trio of psychologists have written a practical and humorous book to deepen the parent-teen connection, raise knowledgeable and emotionally wise teenagers, and to make home an oasis from the stress of adolescence.

Summarizing the insights from Daniel Goleman's bestselling Emotional Intelligence, the authors focus on emotional and spiritual, rather than intellectual, development. They tackle teen issues of schoolwork, car keys, mall malaise, grungy rooms, scary friends, sex, and drugs with their "Four L" plan (love, laughter, limits, and linkages). The pages are packed with instructive scenarios, quizzes, and wise, engaging strategies for parents and teens. One unique chapter--lampooning the ways of parents--is written for parents and kids to read and laugh about together. The authors offer a "24 Karat Golden Rule," which underlines the spirit and substance of the book's emotional toolbox for parents: "Do unto your children as you would have other people do unto your children." --Barbara Mackoff

          Book Description

The authors of Emotionally Intelligent Parenting focus their attention and expertise on the toughest parenting job of all: raising emotionally intelligent teenagers.

Just when parents think they've successfully navigated the baffling challenges of raising young children, they're astonished to find those same kids have become teenagers -- an entirely new genus altogether! Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers provides specific strategies for applying the insights of Daniel Goleman's best-seller, Emotional Intelligence, to this most challenging stage in parenting.

Not only do raging hormones make everything more intense for teenagers, but they have their own special issues concerning identity, self-confidence, peer pressure, and responsibility, including individuating from their parents. Drs. Elias, Tobias, and Friedlander, all respected experts in child behavior, have written a clear, informative book of sound advice to help parents  raise knowledgeable, responsible, nonviolent, and caring teenagers who will mature into well-adjusted young adults.

Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers is  packed with real-life scenarios, practical strategies, the answers to the questions parents ask most frequently, and even questionnaires and quizzes. All of this useful information is drawn from the authors' professional and personal experiences and is given with warmth and humor.

There is a great chapter for parents and teens to read and laugh over together and one that addresses teens who are particularly tough to raise. The authors, professionals and parents who have seen it all, know how to help you and your teenagers communicate.

While my oldest is only ten years old, I immediately realized that this book could help me with raising her even before she officially becomes a teenager. I have already began to experience some strains on our relationship, but this book gave me new insight and approaches that I alone would not have thought of.

My husband and I have discussed that we are worried about the future, when we will have hormone filled teens. Will be raise them right? Have we provide the best foundations for them now? What obstacles must we overcome once these little ones are transformed into young adults? We know how we were for our parents, so how are our children going to be for us? "Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers" was the perfect book we needed.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading for parents of tweens and teens!.......2000-11-03

Once again these three have come up with an easy to read, insightful book on the joys and pains of parenting. Their humorous but sincere dialog shares the good and the bad of the volatile teenage years without being too preachy about things. I enjoyed this book as much as their last one, Emotionally Intelligent Parenting. I would definitely recommend this as a "must read" to anyone trying to raise a teenager in today's world.

          Book Description

The world before September 11, 2001, was challenging enough for parents of teenagers. Now it is more so. Our families, schools, and workplaces need Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers who will not only be knowledgeable, responsible, nonviolent, and caring youths, but who also will grow up to be compassionate, committed, and courageous adults.

How can parents accomplish this? Not only do raging hormones make everything more intense for teenagers, but they have their own special issues concerning identity, self-confidence, peer pressure, and responsibility, including individuating from their parents. Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers shows parents how to use a balance of love, laughter, and limits to reach their goals. Drs. Elias, Tobias, and Friedlander, all respected experts in child behavior and parents of teenagers, have written a clear, informative book of sound advice that applies the insights of Daniel Goleman’s best- seller, Emotional Intelligence, to unlock teenagers’ untapped desire to belong to families and schools that make a difference and to contribute positively to them.

Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers is filled with real-life scenarios, practical strategies, and the answers to the questions parents ask most frequently, all drawn from the authors’ professional and personal experiences and given with warmth and humor.

Guiding the way to compassionate, committed, courageous adults is a serious challenge, but its effective pursuit is a labor of love, a journey of joy, and a path filled with pride.

nothing new here. Read it already in Goleman's books. Can psychologists stop stealing ideas to make a buck?
