A solid, if patchy, general guide to snake keeping.......2001-07-21
The first edition of this book appeared in 1988. This second, "fully revised" edition is essentially an entirely new book. Some material has been reduced (for example, breeding tables and information on keeping venomous snakes), and the new photographs, found throughout the book, are spectacular.
As a general introduction to keeping snakes in captivity, this book is first-rate, if only because there are few such books on the market. While there are many guides to specific kinds of snakes (e.g., boas, corn snakes), few approach the subject in general. This book does so in a thorough and authoritative manner. Very little is left unsaid and, for an adult beginner, this book can serve as a useful reference. Its principal shortcoming is its patchy coverage of individual species: for some snakes it is excellent, whereas for others it leaves much to be desired. Its usefulness to the reader will depend on how well it covers the particular snakes in which the reader is interested.
Its coverage of boas and pythons is very comprehensive, and even lists species rarely available. The exception is its coverage of sand boas, which is limited to a single species.
Coverage of colubrids is more uneven; the one long chapter on this very large family of common snakes affords very good coverage to the genus Elaphe (rat snakes), New World and Old World species alike. Its coverage of kingsnakes is fine but less detailed. Those interested in other colubrids may well be disappointed; the material on pine and gopher snakes and garter snakes is underwhelming, and some species, such as the rough green snake, are omitted altogether. While no book can credibly claim to cover all species equally well, these omissions and shortcomings are surprising when you consider that there are sections for blind snakes and snakes from other families that are seldom kept.
The first edition's section on venomous snakes has been reduced to the most cursory of summaries; those with an interest in this subject must look elsewhere for information.
Keeping and Breeding Snakes.......2000-11-16
A great book for anyone. It gives details on breeding specific species of snakes. It is also good for anyone who owns or is thinking about buying a snake; or for those who just want to learn about them.

We sure liked it!.......2002-12-04
I really enjoyed the book because it had a wealth of information concerning keeping and breeding these reptiles. It helps alot in raising your own personal snakes. I believe that everyone who has the oppurtunity to own a snake should purchase this book. I though it had alot of beautiful photographs of the snakes in their own natural envirnments.

A GREAT CORN SNAKE BOOK!!!.......1999-08-21
I keep and breed corns snakes, and this book helped me out a lot. McEachern has had a LOT of experience with these snakes, and I don't know if I could have gotten far without this book. By far the BEST corn snake manual around!!!
Informative but needs more color pictures........1999-03-15
A good book with good information. Learned alot about keeping and breeding corns. Would be better if book was in color to show different color patterns and variations.

The first book to get on Corn Snakes.......2005-12-17
I recommend this book, because it's 60 pages long, so the time spent between researching corn snakes and actually purchasing an animal would be significantly less than going here and there for information. The author goes into every topic, from care of newborns to adults, and on to breeding and care of eggs. The only thing I wish it had was instructions on how to force-feed hatchlings that won't eat. The illustrations are in black & white, which is acceptable, but color photos would have made a significant improvement for learning purposes. This is a good companion book to the author's other book titled "A Color Guide to Corn Snakes."

Not enough detail.......2001-09-03
This book has nowhere near enough information. It is meant for first-time snake owners, but does not supply them with all the facts. It also barely has any information on snake species. However, it has nice pictures and a good snake disease section, hence the three-star rating. A much better book on the subject is Breeding and Keeping Snakes, by Dr. Dieter Schmidt.

Lots of great photos, but lacking any real good information........1998-12-09
This book is full of really nice photography, but trys to include too many species and therefore doesn't give any complete accounts of any particular species. As we all know, all snakes are different and we cannot be too general in our husbandry. This book was not for anyone seriously interested in breeding.

The maven of all things tasteful, Martha Stewart has impeccable style when it comes to weddings, and The Best of Martha Stewart Living: Weddings compiles the finest ideas from the magazine of the same name. The book is designed to provide inspiration for the big day, whether it is for the ceremony or the reception. Wedding apparel isn't covered, but all of the other significant parts of the wedding are: ceremony and reception decorating, bouquets and boutonnieres, wedding cakes, favors, guest books, music--even storage and display of photographs and other memorabilia after the wedding.
Stewart encourages readers to use the book's ideas as inspiration for wedding elements unique to the bride and groom, and to avoid simply incorporating the book's ideas into their wedding day. She emphasizes that a wedding should reflect the couple's personality and wishes, as well as any customs they choose to follow. There are few rules of etiquette à la Emily Post. Instead, the book provides historical explanations of common wedding traditions, then gives examples of variations on that tradition that couples have decided to use in their weddings. Stylishly arranged color photographs of the bouquets, wedding cakes, reception decorations, table settings, party favors, and more bring the ideas to life; instructions for reproducing them are often provided.
Many of Martha's suggestions are doable even on a budget because they stick to simple, classic design. The reference section at the end of the book includes ceremony and reception planning and seating tips; music suggestions; recipes for cakes, drinks, and hors d'oeuvres; and sources for wedding supplies. The Best of Martha Stewart Living: Weddings should prove a rich source of inspiration for couples looking to add stylish and meaningful touches to their wedding day. --Kris Law
Book Description
"Will you marry me?"
If you or someone you love said yes, let America's wedding experts help you create a day as romantic as the day he asked. For more than a decade, Martha Stewart and the editors of Martha Stewart Weddings have guided brides down the aisle, onto the dance floor, and over the threshold with thousands of ideas for making their wedding day unforgettable. In this breathtakingly beautiful volume, brides-to-be -- or anyone participating in planning this joyous event -- will find ideas and inspiration for every element of a wedding, including decoration, flowers, cakes, food, favors, and photography.
The very best ideas from Martha Stewart Weddings have been organized here in four sections--For the Ceremony, For the Reception, Forever, and For Reference. For the Ceremony is filled with bridal bouquets, boutonnieres, and bridesmaids flowers. There are decorating ideas for every kind of ceremony imaginable -- a classic clapboard church, a grassy meadow, or the family living room. For the Reception features exquisite lighting ideas, a selection of drinks and hors d'oeuvres, charming favors for guests, and, of course, cakes. There are more than 30 cakes to inspire you, and there is one to suit every style, taste, and budget. Novice bakers can learn how to make a basic wedding cake in Wedding Cake 101. Forever includes albums, guest books, and keepsakes. In the For Reference section there is information to help you plan the ceremony and reception, select music, chose stationery, prepare hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, and find supplies to make many of the projects pictured.
Designed to evoke the grandeur with which a wedding day should be celebrated, The Best of Martha Stewart Weddings is the ultimate guide to creating a wedding day as touching as the words "I do."
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic for wedding ideas in any budget!.......2007-10-06
I checked this book out at the library and had to keep renewing it! I used this for so many ideas for my wedding, and we spent less than 10k on the WHOLE thing by doing a lot of the things ourselves. Many people remarked it was the best wedding they've ever been to. I would have bought the book if I could have found it used, but it was too much new for my budget. Get this book! You won't regret it! Another great book for modern but charming wedding ideas is Jo Gartin's Weddings: An Inspiring Guide for the Stylish Bride. You can have a charming wedding without going into debt!
excellent.......2007-09-04
Martha Stewart has been my role model and continues to inspire me. Her magazines are worth subscribing to. They are filled with lots of ideas. she is a remarkable teacher.
Martha DEFINITELY knows her stuff!.......2007-04-25
First, I would like to personally thank Martha (and her team) for the wonderful inspiration and pleasure that my family and I gleaned from this book. After having copied flower ideas and taken on board general tips given, on the big day we were bowled over with the amount of appreciation shown and praise given by guests. The results were truly wonderful.
I would like to point out that even though at first glance, it appears that a small fortune would have to be spent to achieve any of the ideas sold in this book, that is simply NOT the case. (In our case, where we took advice we saved quite a lot of money.)
In fact, the ideas that we realized turned out to be the cheapest yet offered the most 'wow factor'. Truly, Martha is a wizard at making the most out of the simplest things. She absolutely knows what she is talking about and I recommend this book highly.
Beautiful.......2007-03-10
This book is beautiful. The pictures are great and there are a ton of ideas in it. I am having an outdoor wedding in September/October and I could not have bought a better book. There are ideas about everything from the flowers to soaps to put in the bathroom during the reception. I am using quite a few of the ideas I found in the book. Love it Love it Love it
Not like the magazine at all.......2006-10-15
I wish I hadn't bought this book. I love the magazine so I was hoping that the book would be like a whole bunch of the magazines condensed into one huge helpful book. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
There weren't that many pictures with tips and most of the book seems to be a collection of comments on all the weddings Martha and her family and friends have ever had, from her grandmother to daughter to close friends. That was a little odd. The pictures were beautiful but not very helpful. There really weren't too many new ideas or good tips. I was very disappointed.
As long as you don't expect this book to be like a condensed version of the magazine, you might like it. I read the whole thing and put it on the shelf. Hopefully I can pass it on to someone who will appreciate it at some point.

Details what parents can do with and for their children, from birth to age six. This resource book offers new ways for parents to understand their children and provide opportunities to increase their confidence in what they are doing while making the most of the early years. 384 pages.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring, grounding.......2007-09-11
There is so much info out there bombarding moms on toys and games to push there kids to "parrot" information back to parents so the parents are acknowledged for their kids "intelligence". I loved the down to earth, child friendly info in this book. I do not believe in pushing children to learn beyond their developmental readiness. Kids need to be running and jumping and singing, there is plenty of time for them to sit and be still and learn... As a teaching I believe one of the most important things for children is internal self confidence and a love a learning. This book lays out the 1st 7 years. Get it!
Great Book.......2007-09-10
This is a great book and I am so glad that I bought it. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner. If you are expecting or a new parent I would definitely recommend this book to you.
Great approach, encouraging, do read critically though........2007-09-03
Very interesting book. Great to reinforce things we already know and suggest ways to enact our ideals as parents. I especially liked the specific suggestions for kinds of toys and for activities. Gentle, realistic, and encouraging suggestions regarding discipline. Good citations of studies to back up concepts. Those new to Steiner, Waldorf, and Anthroposophy should be aware it is very "Stainer oriented" and the realities within this "spiritual science" are considered a given, though not pushed aggresively. For example, the ideas about the incarnation process and life forces are used as part of explainations. Read carefully and critically and accept only what you like, study the rest objectively. Spiritual ideas aside, it's a good look at interacting with children in developmentally appropriate ways and nurturing their holistic (all around) growth.
Must Read.......2007-05-17
I think this book should be read by all parents. I was always put off by the title and thought it was about teaching your child early- like baby einstein. It is the exact opposite. The book covers child developement from birth through age seven with a Steiner perspective. It includes activities that are age appropriate and nuturing. It is so packed with information I know I will refer to it often. Each chapter also includes a recommended reading list.
Asian compassion and wisdom in child development for the western head.......2006-06-15
I just purchased a copy of this book in English, because my wife has been translating the Thai version form me and we are both completely impressed by the wisdom contained in this book. My wife is Thai and her parents raised her with the same considerations and compassionate love that the book uses as the foundation for guiding parents how to raise their children. Currently, we are experimenting with the classic US style of education at the American School of Bangkok and will also try one of the Thai Waldorf school near our home and observe how the child responds the each on all levels of development. We, because of living in Bangkok, have the multiple education options incudintg British system, French system, Australian system, Multiple Intelligenc system, Montisori system, Christian schools etc..., and are very impressed with what we have seen in the Waldorf schools. Regardless of which education modality we choose the foundations in this book will guide our child development decisions.
I am completely put off by reviewers splattering their judgements of cultish, religous etc around this book. I just don't get it. If someone writes about Montisorei they reference Maria Montisori. If someone writes about Multiple Intellegence education they reference Harvard's Garnier. The primary researcher is always the source of the knowledge. Let's stick to what we know and not conjecture and judge what we do not know. Steiner was definitely on the something, and in today's world we definitely need all the help we can get in raising a new breed of human.

Customer Reviews:
very good book.......2005-11-20
A very good book on the first grade math topics. It provides sound and clear explanations seldom found in other books. Essential math concepts and skills are introduced with many excellent examples. I enjoyed it very much with my son.
The book is ideal for first graders even with the "2nd grade" part. Second graders may find it too easy. If you want to know what other kids are learning in schools, there is a nice web site at http://www.beestar.org. It provides free math practice every week based on school curricula nowadays.
A Review of "Math for Your 1st and 2nd Grader".......2005-07-20
I took a look at this book (Math for Your 1st and 2nd Grader) at the library and now I am going to order it.
I have a 5 year-old that I am presently working with, and although I have a workbook, I am not entirely sure that I am presenting the soundest explanations of various concepts, and so I have come to Mr. Savin.
Pro's: Stephen Savin's writing is very clear and straight forward with plenty of examples in how to teach and verify that your child understands the material.
Possible Con: I do not know if this book is in current compliance with the NCTM standards. This book was written in 1995 and I know that the national standards have changed considerably since then.
That said, I made my decision to purchase based on the table of contents and 'where we are now' rather than some artificial standard: i.e. if this book covers what you are interested in teaching, then buy it.
Having said that, I have to point out that publishers are nuts to not put the entire table of contents on the Amazon "Search inside this book" feature. This book, like so many others, only has page one of the contents listed. Ridiculous.
Without writing out ALL of the 39 mini-lessons, I will write out the major chapters topics (with subsections where meaning is not clear) so that you might have an idea of what you are purchasing.
