Perfect Photo and Story Book For Labrador People!.......2003-03-22
For someone like me who has spent countless hours, days and weeks in the company of four or more Labrador Retrievers, this book is a hoot. It takes light-hearted look at Labradors, sharing a bounty of beautiful photographs of man's best friends with us, and looking at the personality traits and character qualities that make them the single most popular breed in America today. Labs are among the most social of canines, yet they are remarkably calm and pacific once they know you. Which isn't to deny the fact that they are very active and energetic, and that anyone who lives with one needs to ensure the dog and he or she spend sopme time outside in vigorous play every day. But as the author tells us, we love labradors because they seem to represent the best and most admirable qualities we happen to admire.
Labradors are amazingly loyal, and are quite keyed into your emotional state and sense of well-being. As a person who sometimes suffers from migraines, I can attest that the dogs seem to reconize my symptoms and key their own behavior from this perception of the way I am feeling, being much more willing to simply take a nap with me than usual, since they seem to understand from past experience that the migraine will dirve me back to bed. They show many endearing and remarkable traits, and we find ourselves amazed by just how intelligent, perceptive, and attractive they are as a species.
Labradors also live almost exclusively in the moment, and are ethusiastic and energetic in their pursuit of fun and frolic. Anyone living in their company can attest to the fact that you are never at a loss for entertainment when your Labrador friend is around, and he or she are happy to just be with you, and are almost oo willing and too anxious to show you just how excited they are to have you around. Coming home after a long day's work means a kidn of instant celebration, with four Labradors jumping, barking, and wall-banging, so glad are they to have me back home with them. Find a human who is that glad to see you, and you have found true love, my friend. Yet it is all here in spades with the Labradors, and this entertaining little book will seerve to amuse you, educate you, and sometimes surprise you with its nuggets of information, parcels of knowledge, and bits of wisdom about just why it is that Labradors rule the roost around my house! Enjoy!
Dog photos..........2001-05-15
Ask any photography instructor, and he will say, "I don't want to see any puppy and kitty pictures!" How wrong they are. Dale does a great job of presenting the working Lab in everyday situations, from the field trial to the duck blind and the upland field, and he does it with a great sense of humor.
This book, however, is not a training manual. If you're wondering how to train Labs to do what Dale shows them doing, check out Mike Gould's "The Labrador Shooting Dog". Another great look at working Labs is Paul and Julie Knutsons' "The Pointing Labrador." Both books have great photographs of Labs in action, by the way, and the training techniques to back them up.
... hmmm ..........2001-03-15
I was very much taken by the cover shot when I first saw this book on Amazon, the reviews too, seemed rather encouraging ... when the book arrived, I was expecting the rest of the photographs to be of similar or better quality ... am a little disappointed.
If this is an instructional book on how to raise or train Labradors, quality of photographs would not be so critical ... but its a pictorial book, and for some reason, quite a few of the photographs are missing that little extra ingredient which makes for really good photography ... perhaps if the photos had been more tightly edited, it might have made a difference ... At US$35 the book is not inexpensive, and there are better alternatives around ... just do a quick search, under photography and Labradors.
A perfect gift for the lab-lover, and a treasure in our.......2000-07-25
collection. The book is full of great photos paying equal homage to the "field" vs. "English" labs, and does not disciminate over color. His photography skills capture the personalities of the breed, and the depth of the relationships between dog and handler. The captions are perfect, and some will bring a tear to the eye of even the most stoic of us all.
The book is slanted toward field work, domestic life and hunting activities, rather than conformance or obedience work. My husband loved this as a gift, and he is nearly impossible to buy for. All in all, though, it is a beautiful tribute to this remarkable breed.
Just for your Enjoyment.......2000-07-25
Just Labs is a book of few words an magnificent photography. This is not a book that will tell you how to raise your dog, or what kind of food to feed it, or what dog won best of show 10 years ago. It will amuse you and is guaranteed to sit on your desk at work, your coffee table, or your nightstand as a book that will make you smile. It is very easy to read and quite humorous. One section reads:
"Someone once said that it's possible to train a Lab by treating him like a three-year old child; if so then it's no wonder Labs and kids are so inseparable. Imagine a guardian who never sleeps, one with the eyes and ears to rival the best security system ever devised, one that knows roads are bad things and will steer your youngster away from them. At the same time, they realize that a short little kid with an ice-cream cone is like a gift from God."
If you want a fun book to just make you smile, this book is for you.

Not Quite as Expected.......1999-07-09
I don't like to cut down someone else's hard work, but the book is a little pricey for what you get. First of all, the intro leads me to believe that the writer of the book never has owned a golden. Big minus there. He does make some good observations that will make you smile, though, which brings value back to the book and some of the commentary is right on the money. Secondly, there are some beautiful photos, but be aware there are several of them are just so-so, showing several consecutive photos of the same thing with the same dog on the same occasion. Some are probably not much different than the ones you have in your own photo album. This was a bit disappointing. This is a good book to collect if you collect golden books or golden paraphenalia or are looking for a decent coffee table book, but I don't think it's quite as good as it could be.
Dale Spartas knows Goldens!.......1998-06-27
I bought this book because, after perusing it in the bookstore, I kept saying YES as I read the commentary about my chosen breed. Anyone who has ever owned (or been owned) by this wonderful breed will delight in the text and gorgeous photographs. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who has a Golden Retriever!
Just Goldens? Just Wonderful!.......1998-05-07
This is the definitive book for anyone who has been, or is planning to be owned by a 24-karat dog.
A touching tribute to a special breed.......1997-02-07
Any Golden Retriever human companion who can read this without a tear in their eye must have had a lobotomy. The author's limited words are right on the mark. And the photographs capture the essence of "goldenness". I could only hope for even higher quality printing

Book Description
Introducing an exciting new technique called domino knitting, this book teaches both beginners and experts the patterning technique that became a craze among Scandinavian knitters. Beginning with basic instructions and progressing to sophisticated projects, this guide shows how domino knitting allows for easy designing by allowing knitters to build squares on one another horizontally and vertically at will. Precise step-by-step instruction show how squares can be worked in a variety of stitches for multicolored effects. Included is a key to selecting the proper yarn for any project as well as care instructions for any creation.
Customer Reviews:
fell in love with this technique...can do it without a pattern!.......2006-07-31
I've been knitting for 40 years but I am someone who can't knit without a pattern, whether I design it or someone else does. That is, until now. This skill is so deceivingly simple, I can't believe I didn't already know it intuitively. It has allowed me a method to knit without a pattern and when I have limited amounts of time. I really love how loose ends are woven in as you go to diminish finishing time.
This is a terrific addition to any knitter's skill set. I'd probably never make a sweater this way but have made quite a few afghans, pillows, hats and scarves.
A fascinating way to knit domino knitting.......2006-07-11
The book has good instructions how to knit the different squares and triangles and how to make them all together. (My book is in Norwegian, I dont know the exact words.)In the beginning I was impressed by the book. It fascinated me to knit that way. But I experienced that the garments are shapeless and rigid. If they dont fit neither grown ups or children, you have spilt a lot of yarn; it is not possible to take it apart. I have bought a couple of other books giving the same method. The garments in them are looking very fancy, but in contrary to Høxbo, instructions are not good. Maybe with the mix of two books, I can come to a better result. The method is not quite new either. In Norway we have "kontestrikk", built on the same technique. Høxbo and others have used it to create modern fashion, and that is good. Grete
Excellent explanation of an interesting technique.......2006-02-01
When I bought this little book, it was but one of many new additions to my crafts library, so I leafed through it thinking "Hmm, that's interesting; I'll have to try that sometime," then forgot about it. Two years later, while thumbing through the latest issue of Vogue Knitting (Winter 2005/06), I came across a stunning and sophisticated geometric-patterned skirt (on p. 82) that *looked* as if it would be incredibly difficult to do, but VK rated the pattern only "intermediate" skill, and I recognized why: it was domino knitting! So I whipped my Hoxbro book off the shelf, read it through, and finally started learning the technique, which proved to be as easy as the author claimed.
I wish more of my knitting & craft books were this well done. Ms. Hoxbro's instructions are extremely clear, concise yet thorough; multiple drawings & sharp photos illustrate every step, and many helpful sidebars are interspersed throughout the book. As I worked through my first squares & joinings, at no point was I left wondering what to do next. For example, when she says to pick up a stitch "around the corner," she supplies a drawn diagram with an X marking the spot *and* a photo of a join-in-progress, so there's no mistaking where your needle needs to go.
I also like the format of the book: just the right size for tucking into a tote with my knitting, printed on glossy, quality paper, and while it may not lay absolutely flat, it flattens enough to work from and is sturdy enough to withstand creasing at the margin. Wearing eyeglasses, I often find fault with how some books are printed, but I have no issues with this one.
The learning projects in the book all have a distinctly Scandinavian flavor, and perhaps illustrate the versatility of the technique more than anything else. That gorgeous skirt in Vogue Knitting displays a very different style, which *this* experienced knitter might have hesitated to tackle were I not armed with a copy of "Domino Knitting," and thanks to Ms. Hoxbro's section on working triangles, I'll be able to change its hemline with confidence.
A clearly written explanation of a fascinating technique.......2006-01-01
I've read many magazine articles on domino knitting, and have made pieces in the past. The small book clearly, in word and in diagrams, teaches how to use this technique. I finally understand *exactly* where to pick up stitches and I liked the way in which the projects referred back and forth to each other.
My low rating comes from the format of the book itself. The book is so small, and the cover is so stiff, it is very difficult to keep the book open to refer to while knitting. Also, entire sections of my book were misprinted--mostly blank pages, but then another section was printed slightly off center.
Very Addicting.......2005-11-07
Will certainly teach you how to look at things from a completely different angle, and the color possibilities are really endless. If you are looking to expand your knitting skills, this is one of the books that will help you do that. Of course in my humble opinion, you could also use this one as inspiration to a new knitter.

Customer Reviews:
Pitiful.......2003-12-13
A pitiful, self-serving diatribe that seeks to pin the author's own life mistakes on everyone but herself.
Instead of serving as a guide to carrying on after the death of a spouse, this book only spotlights what happens when you allow sadness to give way to a gnawing, all-consuming resentment at the obstacles life has thrown your way.
Heeding the advice of this book after the death of a spouse ensures that you will become a lonely, angry old woman with only the cold bitterness of your heart to keep you company at night.
Lies.......2003-09-24
Many parts of this book are lies, and furthermore the author of this book (who was also the publisher) had many of her friends write the majority of the reviews posted on this site. They are misleading and I encourage you to not believe them.
Humor and Heart.......2000-10-11
The hardest part in "life goes on" is re-joining life. This book was an enormous help in taking those steps. Truly, the "darkest of the night" is not when your loved one leaves this earth, as tragic as that is, but several weeks later when the enormity of it all comes crashing down. Your friends and family think you should be better, but you're not. Alice's breezy and to-the-point style helped me pick up the pieces and go forward. It is full of humor, but also full of heart, a Must Read for anyone who has had lost a spouse or significant other.
A realistic approach to widowhood (for men, as well)........1999-01-10
Somewhat irreverant, but makes one aware that life goes on; it really is ok to laugh,at yourself as well as deceased spouse. A must for everyone who finds themselves in that position, especially when you fear that humor has gone out of your life forever.
a"with it" type person finds herself "without".......1998-12-31
no one is raised to be a widow. somehow it's human nature to think it will never happen to you. but sometimes one finds that the same type of "black humor" that gets you through a grave illness of a husband, kicks in "after the flowers". the author handles the subject in a light manner, but handles deep subjects that only the widowed can related too, in a way that is not frightening to read about. this also touches the comparrison of the divorced woman also. as she says "sometimes single is single is single". it's a good read!

Book Description
A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist implodes the myth of the dumbed-down mom, offering startling scientific evidence that motherhood gives women unexpected mental advantages
Generations of mothers have been told-and believed-that having a baby means checking their own brains at the delivery room door.
"The Mommy Brain" usually refers to a head full of feeding times, soccer schedules, and nursery rhymes, at the expense of creative or challenging ideas. But recent scientific research paints a dramatically different and far rosier picture.
Journalist Katherine Ellison draws on cutting-edge neuroscience research to demonstrate that, contrary to long-established wisdom that having children dumbs you down, raising children may make moms smarter. From enhanced senses in pregnancy and early motherhood to the alertness and memory skills necessary to manage like a pro, to a greater aptitude for risk-taking and a talent for empathy and negotiation, these advantages not only help mothers in raising their children, but in their work and social lives as well.
Filled with lively (and often hilarious) stories of multitasking moms at home and on the job, The Mommy Brain encourages all of us to cast aside conventional thinking and discover the positive ways in which having children changes mothers' brains for the better.
Customer Reviews:
book in excellent condition.......2007-01-08
The condition of the book is as described. Fast delivery.
A refreshing relief to moms .......2005-08-22
Ellison's book assures us mothers that we're not nuts. There is indeed a scientific explanation for the temporary insanity that new mothers experience. But what follows as we begin to settle in to motherhood is even more fascinating, as evidenced by the research The Mommy Brain presents. Readers may be skeptical that intelligence in the book is defined in unconventional ways. But this is something educators now know--that not all intelligence shows up on an IQ test. Ellison's book lets you uncover all of a woman's smarts unleashed by motherhood.
Finally........2005-08-01
Hilarious and true. Any parent can relate. Glad to see someone is finally making a thoughtful contribution that is different and thought provoking.
A long awaited and much needed book on motherhood.......2005-06-16
This book by Ms. Ellison finally tackles some of the myths in our culture regarding motherhood. Her book is not written to further the divide between working or non working mothers.Nor is it to claim that mothers are smarter then women who are not mothers. It is a full and complete collection of recent research that is pulled together to confirm that the biological changes of motherhood enhance a women's potential- not detract from it as is often thought. What separates Ms. Ellison's book from others is her research into new and uncharted territory-daring to explain the complexities of it all not to reduce them to simplistic terms. At times that may mean the reader still has questions but the mere fact of veering from the usual conversation is stimulating and thought provoking. It helps to debunk myths that women lose something after childbirth and instead looks into evolotionary reasons behind some of the biological changes which women experience. It is a great book that looks at the subject from a variety of vantage points which is what makes it a compelling book to read. Kudos to Ms. Ellison for approaching the subject from a new and interesting perspective.
Let's agree on a definition of intelligence........2005-06-13
This seems like a book written by a woman who's driven to "prove" she's somehow better than others because she has children. If we define intelligence like psychologists do, and not like this woman does, then the book is founded on false premises.
So sweetheart, the research doesn't show that mothers' IQs go up. And you know why? Because some things different than resiliency, motivation, etc. are measured there. You could begin the book by stating your DIFFERENT definiton (and noting it's just that - your own definition, suited for your own interest - "proving" mothers become smarter after they have kids) of intelligence becuase if you use the one that other people do the book makes no sense, ok?
