Customer Reviews:
Good book for first timer or a refresher for the experienced owner.......2006-02-22
This book has good guidelines and some good ideas. A little behind in some of the "new age" training. But worth buying.
A very helpful book, especially for a novice........2005-09-26
This book might be under the level of someone who has spent a lot of time around dogs, but for the first time owner, it is great.
The author covers a lot of topics needed for a new puppy mom or dad. I especially recommend the sections on housebreaking vs. paper training. It also works because it doesn't make assumptions about your puppy. Some dogs are dominant and some dogs are meek, and the book is stronger because not only does it take this into account, it has a guide on determining what type of personality your puppy has.
I grew up around dogs, but never trained a new puppy myself, so this was my bible for the first few months with my shih-tzu. In fact, it was out so much that it has chew marks in the corner. So, while helpful as a guide, be prepared to work with your new family member as well.
An excellent guide for first time puppy owners.......2005-09-12
This book is extremly helpful in assisting the reader in choosing, training and living happily with your puppy.
Good basic information, outdated training techniques.......2004-08-19
This book has a lot of useful information about puppy development and personality - but it recommends the choke-chain leash-correction training approach, which has been abandoned by many dog trainers. Setting up situations so the puppy gets it right and is then rewarded is much more humane than jerking the poor little one around.
Great!.......2001-04-11
Really loved this book. Covered just about everything you need to know.
Customer Reviews:
Not as described.......2007-09-22
The title is misleading. The description of this book was sadly lacking in information. There really wasn't any direction on how to train a small breed, adult dog. I sent it back. It may have done a splendid job helpiing train pups, but there was hardly any mention of how to go about retraining an adult. I needed to look at the book before buying it, but was unable to find it in a local bookstore. The current discription needs to be updated to reflect what information is covered.
Pretty Good Ideas.......2007-04-20
I thought the price was a little high, but the book is not bad. My Bichon is partially litter trained. I'm still working on it. I did notice a few spelling and grammatical errors. I can overlook that because the method is pretty good.
What a Great Book and It Works!!.......2007-02-07
I'm not too sure what the previous comments are talking about, but I purchased this book to train my 3yr old Yorkie and thought it was great! My yorky has been trained to go outside and do to the recent cold weather I decided to try litter box training. There is some information on the web, but this is the only book I could find that went into greater detail. I found it went into much more detail, especially on problem solving. It also explained the process much better than any websites had. My yorkie was used to going outside so it took about a month to re-train her to use the litter box, but it was well worth it. I really recomend this book to anyone curious or interested in Litter Box training their small dog!
Don't waste your money.......2007-01-17
This book is too vague; not enough detail. I knew most of what she wrote about just by using common sense;I was hoping for more information. Don't waste your money. Her method does not work as quickly as she states in the book either.
Not impressed........2006-10-16
I researched this subject online and bought the book, hoping it would provide more information. It does not. Instructions are along the lines of, "you may want to buy a bigger litter box.. but you may not...", with not much explanation. The grammar is poor, there were typos, and the book is obviously cheaply made.
There is no more information in the book than you could easily find searching online for 5 minutes. This book is not worth purchasing.

Lord Byron's epitaph for his dog buried at Newstead Abby, 1808.
Near this spot
Are deposited the remains of one
Who possessed beauty without vanity,
Strength without insolence,
Courage without ferocity,
And all the virtues of man without his vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning flattery
If inscribed over human ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the memory of
Boatswain, a dog.

Shoji: How to Design, Build, and Install Japanese Screens .......2007-05-17
This is an excellent guide to making japanese screens.if you are a beginer or a pro i think youll find this the ideal choice to start off with.
Great Starter for Westerners.......2007-01-10
Can not say enough about this book, it gives you a good start if you know a little about wood, but does not stop there.
If you get this book you'll enjoy that it does not insult your interest by just showing pictures of work only a master could do. It gives the information needed to do your first design plus what you'll need once you understand the methods.
Thanks Jay, you have given me a great new experience.

A woodworkers guide to shoji for your home.......2006-02-11
Shoji are really beautiful. There is something wonderful about the light passing through the semi-translucent rice paper, creating an atmosphere that is romantic and relaxing. Having lived in Japanese houses for several years, it was something that I wanted to recreate when I returned to the US.
"Shoji: How to design, build, and install Japanese Screens" was exactly the book I was looking for. Jay van Arsdale has written a simply, comprehensive guide on how to add shoji to an existing house, from very simple screens to much more complicated structures. Its a modern approach to making shoji, rather than bothering with traditional Japanese methods, and is very practical and doable.
The book assumes that you have woodworking skills and tools, and isn't so much a "Beginner's Guide." He gives a list of tools that you will need, mainly a set of chisels, hammers, saws, polishing stones and planes. He does recommend that you invest in Japanese tools, as they are made differently from Western tools and will create a different look in the wood that will be more authentic and aesthetically pleasing. There are a few specialty chisels, specifically the yarinomi and the sokosarae, that will make your shoji-making much more efficient.
The different styles of shoji in the book range from simple shoji, to glass-panel shoji, closet and cabinet screens and lanterns. For the truly ambitious there are instructions for ceiling fixtures and skylights as well as valances and hanging screens. Most of those projects are far removed from my abilities, but a more advanced woodworker will find some inspiring projects.
The photos are all in black-and-white, but there are some beautiful homes on display showing you what you can do with shoji screens. Certainly not everyone has the time and money for that kind of home transfiguration, but it is nice to dream.

Sensational writing and illustrations.......2004-04-17
This book made me turn to gardening and the art world. He is fantastic and I strongly ( emphasis on strongly)recommend buying his books including Victorian Cottages. The next month after I had read his book I retired and followed my love to gardening and art. Since then I have bought 5 Allingham's and many others. My gardens have transformed I was on Gardener's world.

Customer Reviews:
Exellent book.......2007-10-04
This book says so much, it makes you want to call up the author and thank her.
Great Book for the New Mother.......2007-07-21
This book has been an awsome reference. When my son gets a fever they go high. I didn't like always giving tylenol. Aviva gives great ideas for this and so much more. I have looked up so many ailments for my kids, but just as much for friends that I have told about the book. She gives advice on most of the common illnesses, including a breif summary, causes, symptoms, dietary recommendations, Herbal recommendations, remedies and more. She is not against a doctors care and actually recommends it when neccisary. But she gives many other common sence options to try before taking your child in for a two minute appointment that costs $100 and ends up with a, "yep he has a cold give it a few days and he'll be fine."
Informative.......2007-06-09
I am learning a lot as my kids grow. This book is full of information about home herbal remedies, many of them from things I am growing in the garden. I like it's emphasis on health through nature. The book is divided up into problems with solutions and has several very informative introductory chapters. I would recommend this for anyone who has young (or older!) children and is tired of being dependent on cough medicines that don't work and sugar suspended tylenol that rots the teeth and doesn't help the problem.
LUV it.......2007-03-05
This is an excellent book for those interested in taking healthcare into their own hands. Thoughtful words of inspiration, simple herbal and dietary instructions for a variety of illnesses. We reference it all the time.
Piece of mind.......2006-03-22
Great ready reference for mother's who don't like to pump their children with antibiotics and would prefer to try a natural remedy first
