Customer Reviews:
Very poor quality book . . . . .......2007-01-20
I breed fancy mice for a hobby, and bought this book as part of my mouse book collection. It is, by far, the poorest book ever written for the mouse owner. It just has the bare basics for mouse care, and sometimes not even that. Anyone just getting a mouse for a pet will be a little confused by this book, and I was ( and I have experience with mice!) In short, there are other books out there that are better! Don't waste your money.
Great Pictures--Skip the Rest.......2002-01-07
Lots of beautiful, glossy, color pictures of mice being mice--if you don't own them before buying this book you'll want to become a mouse owner. Other than that, the content is extremely basic. The first 15 pages (without pictures, it might be 4 pages of text) are an introduction to the mouse at a very basic level. The next 15 pages covers a range of different rodents (lemmings, moles, voles) that are of little relevance to those who own or breed fancy mice. The information in the rest of the book (take this example "feed your mice well but do not overfeed") is probably useful information for anyone who has no previous experience with rodents but is at an extremely basic level. There is very little detailed information, there are information gaps (for instance, I don't believe there is anything in the book on sexing mice--or determining the difference between male and female--something any first-time owner would find to be critical information). And there is some misleading information as well (pictures of mice on pine bedding--something that is harmful for them) while the book specifically recommends "softwood" beddings (such as pine and cedar). In short, the pictures are entertaining but the information in this book is not sufficient for any new mouse owner and anyone who has owned a mouse previously will find no new information in it and some obviously wrong details.

Color, the next frontier.......2007-05-12
I gave this book to my daughter for her birthday. She is a beginner. She liked it and was eager to get started. Melville's style makes it easy.
Knitting with Color.......2006-11-05
Wonderful book! For those of us a bit timid to work with more than one color, this is a book for you. And for those of us already working with more than one color, a marvelous book with hints we can all use. I recommend this book. It is a delight.
Awesome resource for learning Fair Isle Knitting!.......2006-09-04
Unlike the other reviewers here, I bought this book as my first Sally Melville book, at a time when I wanted to learn Fair Isle Knitting. There weren't any instructors available where I live who could teach this technique to me, so I was extremely thankful to find this teaching resource, which made it possible for me to learn Fair Isle Knitting from the photos and well written instructions alone. I bought the book for the instruction, not the patterns. I was just grateful that there was someone this talented willing to take the time to author a really outstanding teaching book. All the photos in the book were taken on location in Greece, which were very beautiful, and helpful in establishing an inspired and relaxed setting to read through the content. This book really shines as a book on how to use multiple colors in a single project, based on specific techniques like Fair Isle and Intarsia. There are some stylish patterns in this book, including a Fair Isle handbag, with incredible use of color in the examples (I'd love to find this yarn!), a log cabin type afghan in beautiful earth tone colors, a tea cozy in an argyle pattern, and a multi-colored cardigan in a tile pattern that were all very classic and elegant. Some of the other patterns sort of looked like prayer jackets, which is not my style, but some people might enjoy the unstructured style of this look. In summary, I'd much, much rather buy a book with really great instruction and a few inspiring patterns rather than a book full of inspiring projects and not enough instruction to really be effective. I give this book a 5 star rating!
I wanted to update this review to provide some feedback on the pattern for the Fair Isle Tote Bag:
1.) After trying this according to the pattern instructions and having terrible results, I recommend NOT inserting the recommended plastic mesh into the bottom or the cording into the top edge before felting (I don't know why the pattern says to do this.) Doing so prevented the bottom and top from being able to shrink at the proper rate with the rest of the bag.
2.) The length of the i-cord handles were way too long based on the pattern instructions. I also thought the height of the bag was way too tall, so I wouldn't do as many rows as the pattern calls for.
3.) Be prepared to shave after felting, there was a very large halo of sheep fur on top if you use the same yarn as that used in the model from the book.
4.) Be careful about the length of time you felt this. The pattern says to "wash twice" which is not a very good guide. With some yarns, washing twice could destroy your work from over-felting. Depending on the yarn you use, the time needed will vary. Check often, always, and possibly consult a good felting guidebook if this is your first time felting.
4.) I didn't think the `grommets' were an effective way to attach the handles. I was worried the `holes' might unravel the yarn even if the fabric is firmly felted, there were still strings on the private side that did not felt completely. Also, it was difficult to completely mush the grommet hardware rings because you can't clamp down on them from both sides, so the unsecured sections could scratch or even cut someone. I've seen other patterns where the handle was just inserted through the knitting, and that is what I would do for a next time.
Another great book by Sally Melville.......2006-03-29
I love Sally's Knit (book 1) and Purl (book 2), so it seemed only right to buy this one too! It is a beautiful books with great illustrations and patterns, but dare I say a little advanced for this newbie knitter, so for now, it sits on my bookshelf until I feel competent enough to tackle one of the many projects.
Pictures don't do these beautiful sweaters justice.......2006-03-02
I just took a class on color knitting with Sally Melville, and had a chance to see some of the sweaters from this book up close and personal. They are gorgeous.
It caused me to take a second look at book 3 of her series. As usual, Sally's instructions are A+, clear, precise, but also friendly and encouraging. And her meditations on knitting provide any knitter with inspiration about the her craft and process.
Ignore the teen-aged models in designer jeans, and take a close look at the knitted pieces in this collection, and you may find the seeds for creating your own colored heirloom.

so practical, and such a delight to read.......2007-08-03
I live in an arid climate and while most rose books don't give you a clue about what soils/temperatures specific roses need, Beck goes into detail and even recommends (thank you Hallie!!) specific roses for specific desert situations. She tells how to amend the soil, which roses change color in the heat, and even how to combine rose colors. I've checked this book out SO many times from the library--but it's not enough. I need it at hand, for her knowledge, suggestions and humor.
YES YOU CAN GROW ROSES IN THE DESERT.......2000-09-26
Great book that focuses on the needs and advantages of growing roses in the Southwest. Unlike most rose books, which focus on growing roses in more temperate climates, this book addresses the unique requirements and opportunities of growing roses in the desert. I particularly liked the references the author made to specific roses (i.e. Gene Boerner, Abraham Darby, etc.) that do well in more arid climates. This book cuts through the rhetoric of the thicker "prettier" rose books and gives the desert gardner the growing know-how they need to create a paradise in the desert!

Is our baby eating enough? Is this much crying normal? How do I know when she is really sick? This hefty, 671-page guide to your baby's first year is brought to you by the creators of the bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting. The three authors, all mothers themselves, are calm, clear, and encouraging as they tackle the first year of child-rearing, month by month. The easy-to-absorb, chronological format includes sections such as "What Your Baby May Be Doing," "What You Can Expect at This Month's Checkups," "Feeding Your Baby This Month," "What You May Be Concerned About," and "What It's Important to Know."
Part Two addresses special concerns such as illness, first aid do's and don'ts, the low-birthweight baby, the adopted baby, becoming a father, and sibling relationships. You'll also find discussions of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, selecting a physician for the baby, diapers and clothing, safety, and many ways of stimulating the baby's development. The recipes for babies and toddlers in Part Three are useful, as are the recommended home remedies; charts on common childhood illnesses; height and weight; and the thorough index. (A particular strength of the book is the authors' careful attention to diet and nutrition for both mother and baby, incorporating the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest recommendations on infant nutrition.) While some of the authors' perspectives are controversial (such as whether to let your baby "cry it out" or not), this book remains one of the most comprehensive resources for new parents as they toddle through their baby's first year.

GREAT BOOK FOR EXPECTING PARENTS!.......2007-10-15
Another great book by this author to help parents know what to expect after the birth of their child. After reading this book, parents should feel more knowledgeable. BRAVO! AVOIDING THE 15 BIGGEST MISTAKES PARENTS MAKE: A PEDIATRICIAN'S PERSPECTIVE
MUCH better than the pregnancy version.......2007-10-01
I hated what to expect when you're expecting. I found it totally paranoid and annoying. This book, however, was very useful. I enjoyed the monthly breakdown of developmental skills and issues that might come up. It's in a question/answer format, which is easy to read on only a few hours sleep.
Just what a new parent-to- be needs!.......2007-09-30
What To Expect the First Year, Second Ed
My daughter & son-in-law were delighted to receive this book and find it to be informative, helpful and easy to read.
Very Helpful.......2007-09-27
I felt this book was very helpful as a first time mother. Many things that you'll question can be found in this book, and more.
LOVE this series.......2007-09-20
An absolute must for the intelligent parent. This series is not for the paranoid (it will only make you more obsessed about where your child "ranks" amongst otherchildren. This great easy to read book series (what to expect when you are expecting,... the first year... the toddler years) does just what it says it does. It gave us a guide to lessen the shocks and surprises that my daughter kept in store for us. It also helps me to gauge if any social or developmental abnormalities are occuring so that I can seek help if neccesary. Because of this series (in good part) When my daughter had her first peanut reaction on her 1st birthday I knew what was possible, watched, caught it, and got her medical attention immediately. I now carry a life saving Epi-pen. If you are now paranoid , don't get the books. If you can be rational and want to be aware, then run to get it, love it.

What ever expecting mother should know.......2007-06-30
I used this book with both of my children. I never called the doctor once during the children's first year. When the doctor asked me why I was the only parent that had not had called her with a million questions, I explained that the answers I had sought were in this book. I purchased this copy for a friends daughter. A must read.
A must-have for expectant and new parents.......2007-04-11
This set includes two of the most informative books out there. The chapters are clear and easy to follow and are absolutely full of great information. I can't think of a better book for expectant parents and the first year book is a helpful resource to have on hand, too, to accompany The Baby Book by Dr. Sears, both of which should be in every parent's bookcase.
Love This Book Series.......2006-12-20
I read When You're Expecting during both my pregnancies. I am the proud mother of 2 girls, ages 13 and 2. These books are filled with valuable information and facts. I loved the week by week details on growth and development of both baby and mother during pregnancy in When You're Expecting. My younger sister is now pregnant with her first and I'm buying her this set as her first baby gift! It's a must read!
