2 out of 5 stars Cute Book, But Not Very Useful!.......2003-08-29

"Good Dog" is a journal for your dog. The pages are mostly lined and feature different sections for you to record various information about your dog. Most of the sections are silly, though - for example, why would I want to record every single visit to the vet in such a cute (and expensive) album? Other useless entries include a medication checklist, an address book, and shopping lists. I'm sorry, but I scribble my shopping lists on scrap paper - I don't pay for an album to record them in!

The journal itself is just adorable, with cute sketches, backgrounds, and colors. There's a ribbon affixed to the back cover that you can use to keep the album closed. There are also a few "frames" for small photos. The album's very small in size, about as large as a small paperback book (although it is hardcover). The pages are spiral bound.

The feline version of "Good Dog Journal" is "Pretty Kitty Journal", also by Victoria Roberts and H. D. R. Campbell. The format is identical, although "Pretty Kitty" isn't quite as charming as "Good Dog". Unfortunately, the appealing visual designs are wasted on two useless books.

Bottom line: there are better animal journals out there, so don't waste your money!

From the supplier: Apartment managers sometimes allow pets in their properties as a marketing tool or in compliance with fair housing laws forbidding exclusion of guide dogs and other types of animals that assist handicapped people. The secret to good pet management is the implementation of firm policies on pet behaviors. In developing such policies, managers should start with standards or limitations which can be used as defense against potential problems. The factors that should be included in the policies are type of pet, size of pet, number of pets, pet deposit, pet insurance, pet photograph, pet licenses, pet vaccinations, pet leash, restricted areas for pets, pet walk areas, pet cleanup, pet noise and temporary pets. Managers should require all residents who want to keep pets to file a Pet Agreement to be approved by management and to comply with its guidelines. Annual interior inspections should be performed to check compliance.

This book is great. Karla Alexander has many great patterns in many different books.

                    4 out of 5 stars Interesting........2007-01-14

The only reason this did not get a 5 is that I am not sure about how to do this, more over I am a traditional quilt lover and I am not very artsy. I know folks that love the stack and wack. Nice book and great colors.

                    4 out of 5 stars Alaska quilter.......2006-11-12

The instructions are clearly written in this book. What it lacks is any information how to quickly and easily enlarge the quilts. The majority of the quilts are approximately lap or twin size. It would be very helpful to add info for those of us who are mathematically challenged on how to enlarge the quilts either by larger blocks or how to go about creating more blocks with more fabric.

4 out of 5 stars Great Variety for Fast, Contemporary Quilts.......2005-04-26

I like this book SO MUCH more than the original Stack the Deck. The variety in this book is great, and the concept is easy to follow. Plus, the quilts look GREAT. My hand-dyed fabrics really shine in these quilts, and I can showcase special pieces with ease. The Red Onion quilt is my favorite, although I was really attracted to the floral squares one, as well. My only issue with the book is that the borders shown are fairly plain-jane - some different examples would be nice. But hey - if that's the only thing wrong, I can find borders (or create some) for myself!

                    5 out of 5 stars nice book.......2005-03-27

I just received my copies of this book and the first, Stack the Deck. I like the looks of the ones in this book better. I'm wanting to make at least 3 of the quilts in this book. The only 'problem' I see with the books (so far) is that she shows a small photo of different cutting diagrams with the cutting and piecing orders, but you have to either 'free style' it or draw your own or enlarge these to size (which may take several copies since some are oly about an inch square and the fabric square starts out at 9 3/4 inches!) anyways, I haven't tackled this yet and I'm not sure if I'll just draw my own or what. there are also a few with curves in this book and circles..as well as several 'square inside a square' looking ones as well as a few others. Other than not having the full-size 'templates' I'm very happy with this book (but Iguess the idea is to get away from using templates and be creative!) I originally thought I'd give this a 4 star rating but for the type of book it is I think it fits the bill. It reminds me also of some patterns I have by two kwik kwilters, except with theirs they give you the fullsize pattern and you trace it on freezer paper for each set of blocks..but there are more ideas in this book than these patterns currently offer.

We think of herbs as food, or as medicine, but we don't often think of them as aesthetic objects. Gardeners are taught to grow herbs for a reason--these are plants that should be harvested. The author of Landscaping with Herbs, James Adams, aims to show readers how to appreciate herbs as decorative plants. He wants to illuminate their hidden potential, their "other half." Because herbs are so integral to our lives, Adams believes they should be more integral to the garden, sharing in a gardener's landscaping fantasy as much as tulips or magnolia trees.

This coffee-table book is mostly text, with a few scattered photographs, and the prose is a dense mixture of ideas. A chemist by trade, Adams has a complex mind, even going so far as to classify "the volatiles that we perceive as odors released by both flowers and foliage." One highlight: a section on the many ways to landscape a fragrant herbal garden, scattering jasmine and rosemary so that each garden room is flooded by a distinct natural perfume. --Emily White

Jim Wilson provides an overall personal history in his introduction, A Lifetime of Herbs. He describes the herbs individually in great detail; when they bloom, through which zone they can be planted, everything you might wish to know about them. The photos are beautiful. The index is very detailed. There are lists of common and latin names and mail order sources. The hardbound version I first encountered in my local library was 220 pages packed with valuable information and details on everything about herbs; soil types, feeding, overwintering in containers, harvesting herbs for crafts, landscaping with herbs, planting herbs with regard to color and scent, the kitchen herb garden, herbs in walls and pavings. The photos are numerous, in full color and each photo, in itself, is a work of art. This book inspires.

Planning an herb garden, or just thinking about it? Do yourself a favor and get yourself "Taylor's Guide to Herbs" or another herb-gardening resource. This book has photos and rambling descriptions of different kinds of herb gardens, but there is very little defining information on herbs themselves. If you are looking for color photos or illustrations of different herb plants, medicinal/cosmetic/culinary uses of herbs, or even suggestions as to which herbs to plant next to each other, this is NOT the book for you. If you're a professional gardener, this is still not the book for you. However, if you are looking for a coffee-table book that suggests you are a gardener, then go ahead and buy this book. I'd give it a negative star if I could.

                                Book Description

Studies show that emotional intelligence -- the social and emotional skills that make up what we call character -- is more important to your child's success than the cognitive intelligence measured by IQ. And unlike IQ, emotional intelligence can be developed in kids at all stages.

Filled with games, checklists and practical parenting techniques, How to Raise a Child with a High EQ will help your child to cope with -- and overcome -- the emotional stress of modern times and the normal problems of growing up.

I found this book worth the purchase price. I learned new things, concepts, tips, etc....This book is well done and easy to follow though
the ideas are significant in value. It is a strong introduction to the mind of children.

                                1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-05-23

This book provided little new or insightful information on the subject. There is very little research provided, and many of the exercises I found to be forced. There is nothing here that any well-read parent with common sense can't naturally figure out on their own. I got the sense that the author was cashing in on Daniel Goldman's seminal work on Emotional Intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Anyone with Planned or Present Child Should Read.......1999-09-19

This book is about teaching children emotions through activities, games, changing thinking strategies, problem solving, etc.

I am VERY impressed and I don't even have a child yet! If you are interested in reading a book that could potentially help your child (and you) develop into an even more emotionally stable human being, with the skills to problem solve, deal with the big bad world and excel in education in and out of school, pick this book up. Don't overlook it saying something like, "how dare he say that I can't teach my child how to be emotionally stable! Who does he think he is??".

This book is DAMN GOOD. I don't say that about a lot of books. For example, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is also DAMN GOOD but it is hell to read. It took me almost a year because I quit after a few chapters as I kept falling asleep.

High EQ, however, is so easy and actually fun to read that you will find yourself whipping through it in no time, taking endless notes and rushing off to your children's rooms to put into effect immediately what you have just learned.

Don't despair when you next see your child doing something unusual. With this book in your toolbox you and your child will be ready to take on the world by storm.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-06-10

Having practiced as a family physician the past 13 years and with an undergraduate degree in psychology, I literally "prescribe" on a prescription pad three books to every couple that comes in and finds out they have a positive pregnancy test; #1. "What To Eat When Expecting" #2. "The American Academy of Pediatrics; Birth To Age Five" #3.How to Raise A Child With a High E.Q. by L. Shapiro. This book is an excellent compilation of what has the world of psychology consumed over the past five years. I initially read Goleman's "Emotional Intelligence" in 1996. Shapiro lays out that concept and adds all the current studies/authors that have presented with related material [ i.e. Seligman's "The Optimistic Child"] into an extremely well-versed, non-psycho babble format. Shapiro then adds his extensive background in applied psychotherapy and makes this all applicable to your child. This is an excellent transition...all that I've read on this topic doesnot do this nearly as well. Read, learn and use this information.

3 out of 5 stars If you are smart enough to find this book, you don't need it.......1999-02-28

This book takes each of the factors of EQ and writes a common sense report on how to enact them for your child. All the author has done is collect published information related to each subject and sprinkled in a bit of his own puritanical ethics. He doesn't mention any specific EQ research of his own.

In fact, no cutting edge research is included, if it exists. While reading this, I envisioned the author sitting in the publisher's office sometime in 1995 accepting another assignment, "Write us a book about this new stuff called EQ, whatever that is." And off he went to the Web and the card catalog. Laughing all the way to the bank, too.

It provides nothing new in regard to EQ. If you know what EQ is, if you want your child to have a high EQ, then you already know most of what is in the book.
