A Terrific Compendium On Labrador Retrievers!.......2004-09-03
One of the several intriguing and quite useful aspects of this book that drew me in was its premise that the Labrador Retriever is perhaps the single most agreeable and people-oriented of all the domesticated breeds, which also creates the situation in which the dogs are also quite trainable and thrive on interpersonal interaction with humans. The author shows the reader how and why to care for what some of us consider the single greatest act of creation, the Labrador Retriever! Thus, by showing us the degree to which the breed represents a witch's brew of intelligence, honesty and loyalty to its human companions, the author illustrates why the Labrador has become the single most popular breed of dog in the world today. Labradors are sturdy creatures indeed, bred for sporting use along the quicksilver shores of Newfoundland, where the water temperatures and sea conditions require a healthy dollop of strength and endurance, and those are qualities these dogs have in spades.
For those of us who have witnessed them at work and at play in the fields and in the water, the Labrador's singular combination of physical attributes and obvious intelligence makes them the ideal human companion. I should know; I live with four of them! The proof of their adaptability to almost any condition and their loyalty, intelligence, and unparalleled work ethic is demonstrated by the wide use of them as guide dogs and as adjunct partners for the physically handicapped. Stories of Labradors crawling out onto the ice to save their masters are legendary, as are the tales of them rescuing children from fires or from underneath rubble. Never has there been a dog superior to them.
The author has recruited a wide variety of experts to testify as to the qualities and abilities of the dog, and one walks away from a reading of the book much better informed as to the all of the many qualities and capabilities of the breed, which seems to represent an astonishing list of useful and worthwhile attributes. We also get quite critical information as to what to look for when choosing a lab, and how to analyze the quality of the puppy you see before you. The author offers a compendium of information regarding genetics, feeding, health care, and inherited dispositions, as well as some sage advice as to how to ensure your puppy becomes the grown up Labrador companion you will come to view as another family member. This is a great book, and one I heartily recommend! Enjoy
A Very Informational Book.......2002-08-17
My family just got a Yellow Labrador Retriever and I read this book to get myself prepared to help take care of him. This book is very informational, and covers these topics: Getting to Know Your Labrador, Homecoming, Health, Nutrition, Grooming, Breed Standard, History, and Behavior. I found this book to be a great source of Labrador information. Anybody who owns or is considering getting a Labrador should also consider this book.
The Essential Lab (...) is proof: you get what you pay for.......2000-05-02
The book is small, mainly pictures of lab puppies and, for somereason a few full pages of huskies? As far as advice on how totake care of the breed, it's as generic as they come. This is the only lab book I have purchased since getting my puppy, but I can not recommend it. My last dog was a Golden Retriever and this could have been written about that breed (or huskies for that matter). Sorry I don't know of a book I can recommend, but I just didn't want you to order this and be disappointed.

This book relates physics to life!.......2007-07-05
I am a retired science person who volunteers as an eighth grade science teacher. My primary notion is to convince the students that an understanding of the basic ideas of physics will enable you to comprehend more complex principals. To accomplish this, I am always searching for real life examples which demonstrate physics ideas. "The Flying Circus of Physics" provides a rich mix of these examples that makes the student see physics as part of their day-to-day life and not an abstraction.

if you are a physics teacher this is a good one for your library. You won't use it everyday but it is nice to have.
Congratulations Amazon for Taking My Suggestion.......2007-04-15
For about a year, I've restrained myself from buying this book, since the reviews and description did not reflect the 2007 (once set at 2006) edition. About a month ago, I suggested they do something about it. I may have even written to Walker. At last, the description is up to date. However, a week ago I just decided to buy the book and write a mini-review. I'm just going to say a few words though.
It's a much larger format width/height wise. The answers are placed after the question and they are generally much longer responses than the first edition, which I thought were a bit too brief. These are completely new topics. The references are gone, but I do believe they are on his web site--in spades. There's quite a bit of supplemental info there. To find it his site just Google to "Jearl Walker" flying circus.
I suspect another difference in the book is the questions seem to have gotten further away from common basic physics. For example, in his first book he poses the question why does the cardboard stay in place when you turn over a glass of water with a cardboard over its mouth? Of course, there are many deeper questions in edition one. Nevertheless, his questions are interesting in the second edition. He's punctuated the book with some fun "short stories" like fire-walking. The book strikes me something like the approach of Mad about Physics, which also pulls examples from (a) physics journal in the manner of Walker's first edition. I don't quite see the "conceptual" tone as in Paul Hewitt's book Conceptual Physics, or in Epstein's Thinking Physics. Just different ways of thinking about physics.
wonder-full.......2006-09-13
This is my favorite book. This is a fantastic collection of hundreds of physics puzzlers, many taken from everyday life. It is full of thought-provoking questions about: superballs, silly putty, tops, and yo-yos; boiling water, dripping faucets, and blowing bubbles; rain, rainbows, snow, lightning, and tornados; bicycles, cars, boats, airplanes, and spaceships; magnets, electricity, radio, and television. It has answers in the back, but it is more fun if you try to figure it out for yourself, and resist looking up the answer. Some of these simple questions are so deep that scientists don't know the answers yet. Literally wonder-full.
Fascinating.......2006-08-29
I chanced upon this book and now can't put it down. I never realized how little I know about how the world around me works. This asks questions about physics in everyday life, not esoteric particle-accelerator stuff. Absolutely fascinating and the best read I've had in a long time.

not too funny, not too organized.......2005-07-19
Machado's schtick is funny here and there, but elsewhere is an annoying distraction. The biggest problem though is how disorganized the book is. The chapters just follow a stream-of-consciousness ordering, with nothing to tie them together except for a clever little quip. There are lots of good tips in there, but it's not a *book*.
Another fantastic book from Rod.......2004-07-07
Working on your instrument rating? Preparing for a competency check? Need to learn GPS instrument approaches? Just want to laugh? Here's the book to satisfy all of that. Twenty-seven years of teaching experience leaps from each page, and Rod delivers on his promise-you'll laugh while you learn. This book is filled with anecdotes, stories, humor, and wisdom. It's a must for every instrument student and instrument-rated pilot.
Makes learning instrument flying fun!.......2003-02-15
Nobody teaches instrument flying better than Rod Machado. Best of all he makes learning a pleasure through his genuine enthusiasm for the material and wonderful sense of humor. Whether you're an aspiring instrument pilot or an experienced one brushing up, this book is a must-read!
Rod Machado does it again!.......2001-10-09
With over 25 years of experience in the aviation industry, Rod Machado has a significant background to draw from in his books. He presents material important to the Instrument pilot, and even to private pilots thinking about getting their instrument rating in a straightforward and humorous manner. Rod Machado is never boring and always relevant!
A good supplement to your aviation library.......2000-07-06
I appreciate Machado's book more now that I'm maintaining currency than when I was initially working on the instrument rating.
The most valuable part (to me) was on cockpit organization. The four-way clipboard suggestion is an elegant solution compared to the well-armed instrument gladiator look I was sporting -- you know, with multiple kneeboards and a Post-It(tm) pad.
His analyses of the individual parts of the approach and "how the system" works are helpful as well, especially with both NOS and Jepp charts. The only minus was the suggested scan technique. It didn't work for me and I thought it was a little cumbersome.
Book Description
When Flying Was Fun! is an autobiographical collection of aviation anecdotes covering four decades of flying, starting with the sixties. These humorous and sometimes poignant stories are told from a first person perspective by the author, who was a naval aviator during the Vietnam War and spent over thirty years as an airline pilot with United Airlines. These memoirs relate to those days when pilots actually flew airplanes, before the days of glass cockpits and computer-operated flights. Those were the days when passengers dressed up in their Sunday finest for a trip to the airport to go on a flight that would take them on the adventure of their lives! This was a time when airline pilots and flight attendants looked and felt sharp as they strode to their airplanes with pride in their uniforms and the feeling that they truly were part of the most glamorous profession in America.

Book Description
Narrative theology emphasizes the priority of the story of Jesus Christ because the story precedes categorizing or conceptualizing. An exercise in postmodern narrative theology, this book shows how the distinction between narrative and story enables one to read the Bible as a single story that finds its focus in Christ. Loughlin sees the Church as the telling and continuation of Christ's story, with the Bible and the community as the context in which Christ makes himself known and available for faith.

Good but I was looking for a different Douglas Adams.......2007-10-11
The book makes some humorous observations illuminating paradoxes in the bible. While its entertaining, I had originally thought it was written by the Douglas Adams who wrote the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but it is not.
Warning.......2006-08-29
This was a great book. I picked this up thinking this was the "hitchhikers guide" Douglas Adams. I really enjoyed this book but I think it should be stated this is NOT the 42 guy. So if you're looking for his books, this is not one of them.
Not by the same author as the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series!.......2005-11-27
For people who are fans of Douglas N. Adams the author of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, I would like to warn you that the author of The Prostitue in the Family Tree: Discovering Humor and Irony in the Bible is a different person named Douglas E. Adams. Unlike the famious radical British athiest Douglas N. Adams, E. Adams is an American preacher who is not in any respects a comedian. I hope you do not make the mistake that I made.
The subject matter is worth it.......2003-08-05
As other reviewers have stated, the writing is not all there - the book doesn't seem like a book so much as notes the author would use for a class - but the subject matter is unique and worthwhile. Until there is some other book about tbhe subject (adams or otherwise) this is what we have to deal with, and I'd much sooner take it than leave it.
Not what I thought.......2003-06-19
I thought that this would be a great book written by THE Douglas Adams, author of HHG2G and well known atheist. Wow, was I mistaken! Anyway, I've got nothing against this book. I just want to make sure other people don't make the same mistake I did.

A Dramatic Commentary .......2007-02-25
Swanson is a very creative writer! His commentary is a one-of-a-kind attempt to give the presentor of St. Luke's Gospel (preachers or those who want to present the text as a drama) ideas about how to approach doing this. As is the case with many commentaries written to help preachers with creative ideas for their coming sermons, some of Swanson's approaches are very helpful; some are not. We each go about preaching the way we do it. In addition, Swanson has translated St. Luke's Gospel, reading the Jewishness of Jesus back into our English langauge text (for instance He is called Yeshua). It is good drama, but I don't see many congregations capable of handling his translation. His commentary follows the readings, Sunday to Sunday, from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). It is a good resource for preachers who follow the Christian Year, and not so good for those who don't.
Book Description
This book, rather ironically, uses the written word to draw together threads from science, psychotherapy, scripture, and homiletics that can help us recognize and reclaim the power of oral-aural storying as a way of knowing. Story as a Way of Knowing will open your mind and imagination to new ways of thinking and knowing about yourself, others, your world, and your God.

Book Description
For thousands of years the stories in the Bible have been passed on from generation to generation. This new retelling of many well-loved stories from the Old and New Testament is ideal for reading aloud to children today.
The lively narrative brings characters and scenes vividly to life while remaining true to the meaning of the original text. Children will enjoy the imaginative use of language and rhythm, and the variety of pace and mood, which give fresh appeal to these timeless tales.
Bob Hartman is uniquely qualified to write this book. He divides his time between entertaining children as a storyteller for the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and being pastor of a church. In The Lion Storyteller Bible he has created a book that will be treasured by children of all ages.

A Good Place to Start.......2001-05-26
I have looked at a few "toddlers`" or "first" bibles, but this one best suits our present needs. At seven and five years of age, active, and bilingual at present, my boys enjoy read-aloud books: only if interesting, and in case of the youngest, only with pictures.
Twenty-five stories each from the new and old testaments are retold in a format which lends itself to reading aloud. These well-crafted versions entertain, yet stay true to their messages, the most prominent of which is that , "God is love." Veteran storyteller Bob Hartman uses simple language, (which early readers will appreciate,) but never talks down to his audience. Sweetly illustrated in color and across two pages, both tales and pictures are easy to share. This children`s bible is sure to be a family favorite for many years. Sunday school teachers will also find this a welcome addition to their repertoire.
Bible made fun for kids.......2000-05-09
I really enjoyed The Lion Storyteller Bible for the simple, fun and colourful way it portrays Christ and his teachings. Some children's bibles I've come across tends to be rather wordy and plods along. Not so The Lion. It is written in a quick, fun style that would appeal to children, firing immediately their imagination of the message God intends for us all. I strongly recommend it to those who are interested in teaching children God's messages.

The "Yellow Brick Road" is the best book I have read by William Bausch. What is so helpful is the unique way the author weaves his stories into the spriritual journey, making his points very clear. One story that highlights this fact is the one about Ruth & Margaret entitled "Ebony & Ivory" It must be one of the most inspiring stories ever told. This book is full of hope, courage & discernment & it will be extremely useful to anyone going through a personal crisis. The book is real to life situations.

The role of birth partner is a tough one. A birth partner may be expected to help a laboring woman make decisions and help her get through the pain and discomfort of childbirth. During this high-intensity time, the birth partner--whether father, partner, or friend--needs a book that can give thorough information for studying ahead of time, yet can be easily referenced in an emergency or for quick answers during labor and delivery. The Birth Partner fills both needs.
Penny Simkin, P.T. (Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn) has written a clear, informative guide that includes a thorough description of everything a birth partner can expect. For a quick brush-up, or for sudden emergency situations where a birth partner is thrust into the role unprepared, the book also provides vital information and emergency tips that are clearly marked on pages with darkened edges. Every section includes a description of a stage of labor or circumstance, a description of what the caregiver (doctor, nurse or midwife) might do, and suggestions about what the birth partner's role should be.
The different sections include preparing for the birth, helping labor begin (in certain situations this is necessary), early labor , the stages of labor, strategies for special situations, the medical side of childbirth, and ways to assist after the birth. Of special note is a clear chart describing various drugs, their desired effects and secondary reactions, and the stages of labor in which each of them may be appropriate.
Book Description
Definitive guide for preparing to help a woman through childbirth, and the essential manual to have at hand during the event.

A must-have for a nervous husband!.......2007-09-25
This is our first pregnancy, and my husband is honestly more nervous than me! Letting him know what to expect is great for him.
Excellent purchase........2007-05-21
This was one of the best purchases we made in terms of labor and delivery for our first child. Well worth reading for the mom-to-be and anyone else who is going to be involved in the labor and delivery.
Great book!.......2007-03-29
This book was extremely helpful in learning how to support the laboring mom. There were so many helpful resources to use. I will be taking this book to births with me for quick reference.
Helpful Resource.......2007-03-24
The Birth Partner was a great book for anyone that wants to learn more about being a partner in the birthing/delivery process. I was a complete novice and found it so helpful to prepare me for my role in being a birthing coach for my friends home birth.
Worth reading!.......2007-03-08
The only downside to the book is that it is not concise. That means, you will pretty much need to read it cover to cover. But, the information in there is extremely important for anyone supporting a soon-to-be mother. Well worth the money!
