Dreidelcat is Dreidelrific!.......1998-11-27
This astoundingly charming - yet strange - keepsake book retells the Hanukah tale with the cats as the Jews & the dogs as the Greco-Syrians. Brilliantly capturing the spirit of the tale in both text and illustrations, Dreidelcat is a book I would highly recommend for children of all ages, at any time of the year. Adults would also like its off-kilter take on Hanukah as well. Be sure to check out the wonderful drawings of the cat with its whiskers cut off, the dogs riding their "army of armadillos," and the infamous cat sacrifice scene in the temple. Brilliantly conceived! Destined to become a classic!

Customer Reviews:
It worked!!.......2007-08-13
This is a beautifully illustrated and well written, easy to follow book. I have only started knitting in the last six months, so am a novice. I have just made the felted ballet slippers in this book, and they worked!!! I made them for my daughter (the smallest size) and they fit beautifully. It is lovely to get a pattern that works perfectly without any fudging. Have started two more projects already. Love this book.
A Knitting Essential.......2007-06-02
This book takes you through the basics of knitting and felting articles for both novice and experienced knitters. A great selection of knitting patterns for everything from bags and purses to hats, mittens, slippers, vests, rugs and pillows is included along with helpful information about yarns and fibers. This is a "must" book for every knitter with lots of pictures and clear, concise instructions.
good patterns/starter book for felting knit pieces.......2007-05-14
The patterns in this book are great, but it leaves me wanting more, and more varied. This is a good starter book for felting though.
The felting 'how-to' information alone is worth the price of the book........2007-01-28
Let's pretend there are no patterns in this book at all, and only the information on felting. That information leads you to successfully felt your projects without a single mess-up. Not only does this save you time, it saves you material; because felted knits require more yarn than other projects, and felting is unforgiving. It's not like you can just let that felted bag dry (which takes *days* in some areas), unravel it, and start over. Felted knits cannot be unraveled. You're out the (expensive wool) yarn; the time it took to knit the project; the energy used running the washing machine with only one item in the load; the time you spent parked in front of the washing machine to keep from overfelting and ending up with a cell phone pouch instead of a tote bag...
The instructions and tips in this book are absolutely excellent. If you know your washing machine well, and follow the book's instructions, you'll be good to go.
I have not yet tried any of Ms. Galeskas' patterns. Was a little disappointed to read here that the mittens are all virtually identical. And I agree that there could be more variety among the bags; the bag patterns in the book mostly don't flip my switch, either. But I do like many of the other patterns there. I plan to make the tea cozy several times, for myself and as gifts; and I am going to make the oven mitt. Unfortunately, as I've not tried any of the patterns, I can't yet speak to the accuracy of the instructions or the quality of the results. But if any of the patterns turn out interesting, I consider that to be a bonus. Because the felting 'how-to' information alone really is worth the price of the book. When I bought my copy, I had just finished knitting a pair of giant wool mittens -- about 20" x 8", and it was time to felt them. The pattern I was using just said, "then felt," or something equally vague. I read Galeskas' instructions, did as they said, and the mittens came out perfectly.
What I wish the book had that it does not: 1. some "before" pictures of the completed projects in the book, so we can see what they're supposed to look like *before* we toss them into the washing machine -- and *before* it's to late to unravel and re-do if we've gone astray; and 2. a discussion of how yarn-gauge will affect the results, and how those might be changed by varying the needle-gauge.
The most comprehensive book on felting I have found.......2007-01-20
Beverly Galeskas takes the mystery out of felting. This book covers the topic of felting from beginning to end. Very detailed information and instructions to be sure your felted project will be a success. She even covers the differences in felting results from using yarns from different wool sources. If you are new to felting, or have tried it before with less than stellar results, this is the book for you!
The patterns in the book are designed for beginners through intermediate knitters. Most are relatively small projects - small bags, slippers, hats. The larger projects include a vest and rug. I have made the felted vest for my father- and it turned out beautifully! He wears it constantly and loves the warmth. I have made several pairs of the ballet slippers- they are so comfortable - pure luxury to wear!
I am absolutely hooked on felting!

Customer Reviews:
Book is Great! Yarn is awful!.......2007-05-20
I loved this book and have knitted two of the purses - Striped Houndstooth and Fuschias. Both patterns are well written although not as detailed as I feel they could be. I do have to give customers one warning -- I didn't like the Shetland yarn. I bought a kit and I was satisfied with it until I felted it. It stretched like heck. I think it would be better to substitute the yarn and then possibly use it doubled. For the Striped Houndstooth I used Lion Wool (one strand) and it came out great - unbelievably thick and so nice. I think the colors are comparable to those called for in the pattern. I would suggest buying this book and then substituting the yarn so you won't be disappointed in your project. As always, I love Nicky's imagination. They are not boring to make to say the least! Keeps you interested until the last stitch.
Love this Book!.......2006-11-10
If you love Nicky's other books, you will enjoy this one also. She has her own style and fashions great felted bags. A very good book to have on the shelf.
More ugly duckling than beautiful swan!.......2006-11-04
While I think many of Ms. Epstein's books are brilliant, this was a disappointment. Who actually over the age of 6 wants to knit a bag that looks like a swan? (think Bjork.) This book incorporated many techniques from her other books; so if you own these, skip this one and make your own design. Trust me. A design of your own could rival many of these.
Creative Curiosity.......2006-09-18
Creativity: check - wonderful ideas: check - eye catching: check - little crazy: check! While I think Epstein is BRILLIANT - this book was not particularly one of my favorites. Many of the patterns were a bit too far off the "normal" scale for daily use - but could be modified. I wasn't sure of the intended audience - some of the bags look too childish but seemed intended for adults. Several petterns were creatively spectacular, but just too over the top. Did not anyone learn from Bjork's tragic swan dress?
Epstein is brilliant!.......2006-09-18
This book goes above and beyond the typical "knit a bag" books that are out there. It's as if an artist let you in on her secrets. Some of the bags are a little goofy in design, but the ones that are fabulous (Wisteria, Jacobian, etc.) are well worth the price of the book. Wherever I go, people say, "What a fabulous bag!" - Thanks Nicky!!! I want to own every one of her books!

Visit the library first.......2007-02-28
I checked this out from our library before purchasing, and I'm glad I did. There was not a single pattern I am interested in making. The hats--my main interest--look like they were designed by someone who learned to knit 6 months ago. There are so many better felting books and patterns out there--keep searching.
Fablous Felted Knits.......2006-11-10
This book has some interesting patterns in it. However, I find the construction somewhat off putting.
a Christmas gift.......2006-01-12
I recieved this book as a christmas gift. I do not think that I would have bought it for myself, but it made a good gift.
I have not tried any of the projects yet, but that is mainly because they do not appeal to me or, for the ones that do appeal to me, I have to go out and find the supplies for them. The yarn bowl looks very nice. The pictures of the projects are great and in good color, but the techniques glossary is lacking these pictures or even diagrams and could leave you in the dark, especially if you do not sew or embroider.
It was nice to learn that felted knitting could be sewn and cut, but I want to knit and felt a finished product, not knit fabric, felt it, cut it out, and sew it together.
Most of the projects retain their stitch definition, which is not a look that I expected. The machine felting instructions leave me uneasy, but the hand felting instructions were wonderful and easy to follow. The drying and finishing instructions are also clear.
Glad I borrowed from library instead of buying..........2005-11-25
I borrowed this book through my local library, and I am so glad I did so before purchasing it. If you cannot sew, you will not be able to do several of the designs. The pattern for the handbag pictured on the cover requires sewing skills; additionally, it requires a zipper, and the size and type of zipper necessary is not included in the materials list. Also, the publishers have chosen not to list suppliers in the back of the book, and ask the reader to refer to their website instead. Well, I logged on to Lark's website, and could not find a list of suppliers for this book. Thanksfully, a google of online yarn suppliers will help you locate some decent internet sources that sell some of the more specialty yarns used in this book. I will continue my search for a book on felted knits, and pass on purchasing this one.
Great book!.......2005-11-17
I bought this book for the vest pattern, but I've ended up knitting a bag instead. The instructions are clear for the knitting, and there are several different methods of felting detailed in the introductory chapter. A previous review dissed this book because it has embroidery and sewing in some of the patterns. That person labeled it not "easy." I don't know what information that person had, but the title says nothing about "easy," and in fact, I like the challenge associated with the designs. There are a range of patterns, from simple to challenging. Not everything has to be "easy" to be fun or worthwhile to do. And, you can modify patterns to suit yourself. This book gives a lot of information about felting so you know why and how it works and can then use the technique in whatever way you want (including combining it with embroidery and sewing). I highly recommend it.

Book Description
In this evocative book, Wall Street Journal columnist Naj pursues his subject from Bolivia to New Mexico, interviewing growers, botanists, chefs, and doctors, even chronicling a long and acrimonious lawsuit that has raged around the use of the term "Tabasco." Illus.
Customer Reviews:
What Food Writing Is All About.......2004-07-08
Amal Naj's "Peppers" is now more than ten years old, but, if anything, these hot darlings are even more in favor with the American public than they used to be. I'm sure Naj would add a chapter or two if he were writing today, but the book is nevertheless delightful. I particularly enjoyed Naj's coverage of the attempts to find possible living ancestors of modern day "chilies" in South America, and the importance such research has to the protection of the modern agricultural crop. His extensive writing on the war for the "Tabasco" trade mark is first-class storytelling. Of course, as a New Mexican, I do enjoy reading many pages of lore about our state's most important crop. The most flavorful peppers are indeed New Mexican.

Peppers.......2001-12-08
This book was a great read despite the fact that one would not ordinarily expect it to be so given the subject matter. It was so well written that I found myself reading whole chapters of it out loud to my wife.
The author makes an obscure sublect (how many books have you read just on the lore of peppers?) enjoyable. The author covers the history of the subject all the way back to the first peppers growing wild in the South American mountains and brings it up to date including the new work being done in agricultural labs. Plus, he goes into the differences in types of peppers as well as a remarkable number of culinary and cultural aspects of the subject. All that, plus being a page turner.
After planting a growing five kinds of peppers (and bottling them for family and friends) I'm getting a second copy of "Peppers" to give to my son as a present. He likes hot peppers too so I know he will enjoy this well written and interesting book.
By the way, the book "Peppers" is not where I got the instructions for the growing and bottleing of the peppers, that came from a friend. But he, too, had a copy of "Peppers" and had enjoyed it greatly. It's a book for current, and future, pepper aficionados.
Great pepper lore for all chiliheads.......1998-02-20
Being born in India you should expect Amal Naj to have been raised on peppers. Funnily enough his love for hot pursuits originated in Northern Ireland after living on potatoes and other bland foods for a long time. He sets of on a journey around the world tracking down peppers, salsas, stories of old and people in the pepper business. And what an amazing bunch.
From the huge farms in New Mexico to the highlands of Bolivia and on to Yucatan for a hot encounter with the habanero. A word of warning: If you are japanese dont eat in restaurants with Mayans in the kitchen.
Altogether a very enjoyable book and a good read for everybody who likes to bite into the pungent pods - and to be bitten back.
Book Description
Written especially for parents who have lost a child, Trying Again provides facts to help determine whether you, or your partner, are emotionally ready for another pregnancy.
Customer Reviews:
Next steps........2007-04-30
After the stillbirth of our first child, we received or bought quite a few "Dead Baby Books" as we jokingly called them. Trying Again was the gift of a friend who knew that because we had lost our child to severe preeclampsia/HELLP, we would really struggle with whether we should try again in the future.
Trying Again is a reasonably good summary at the issues facing couples in a situation like ours, and special issues relevant going into a pregnancy that we know will be high risk. I have a minor frustration since all of these books about high risk family discuss the impact on the husband and the other children, and never seem to put any focus on the woman's career. It's often hard enough to be pregnant and work, let alone going into a pregnancy knowing that you may well have to stop working very early in order to go to term.
I would recommend the book for anyone who has lost a child. I think that many of the emotional issues are relevant whether you believe that your loss was a one-off event or whether you know already that you are high risk. However, I think women who have just learned the hard way that they are high risk will probably get the most out of the book.
very informative.......2007-04-06
This book was very factual and informative. It covered many topics beginning at dealing with the loss and moving onto the birth of your next baby.
Great book!.......2007-03-08
This book has been so informative and such a peace of mind to me! It has been wonderful to read a book that is geared toward women like me! I will defintely be recommending this book to others who I feel it will help.
This Book is HIGHLY recommended.......2007-01-11
All I have to say is this book says it all. I would be thinking alot of what the book said, and I would highlight it and take it into the doctor with me...and it was nice to know that others thought the same things.
Not recommended for someone who has experienced a single loss.......2007-01-10
I think this is a very good book for some women, but I would not recommend it for the couple who has experienced one loss and are not at greater than average risk for experiencing another. I was also dissappointed that the book did not contain very much original writing, instead it was mostly a compilation of interviews. Most of the women profiled had experienced multiple losses. I have experienced one loss and the last thing I want to imagine is going through this 3 or 4 times more! If you have experienced multiple losses, and are looking for "honest" rather than sugar-coated answers to your concerns, this may be the book for you. But, if you are not at a greater than average risk, and want to focus more on the positives of "trying again," I would look for another book.
