step by step nonverbal instruction.......2005-01-06
I wanted to draw more realistic cats
and this book showed me that I needed to start with the head shape
and not the ears. There was not a lot of writing, just good step-by-step instruction. From my first drawing with this book, my drawings have improved. I highly reccomend this book!
Great Drawing Book.......2004-12-21
This is the best drawing book I have gotten to date. It gives detailed instruction. Almost immediatley I was able to draw realistic looking cats. Using the techniques in the book I was able to expand and draw other animals as well.

I am teaching my students to draw cats using this book. I like the step-by-step drawings and the different position and types of cats.
We have gone one step further in class by making our own stationery and cards using our finished drawings. We add a complimentary quote to our drawing from the book 516 Sensational Cat Quotes, Proverbs, Quips and Jokes for Scrapbooking, Crafting and Fun ISBN 0966640578
Teachers, have your student make a copy of the original so that they can make numerous copies. Save the originals.

Book Description
Celebrating today's surge of interest in hand crafts, this book introduces new quilters to a simple yet versatile set of techniques that allows them to create sensational quilts entirely by hand. A world-class designer and extraordinarily skilled quilter, Jinny Beyer demonstrates everything from threading a needle to piecing perfect points. Beginning with the basic running stitch, quilters quickly move on to joining two, then four patches, making stars and compasses, setting in pieces, and stitching curves. With each new skill, quilters are invited to begin the next section of a quilt designed especially for beginners-encouraging a "sew-as-you-learn" approach with each of the 10 quilting projects. The quilting stitch is simply and clearly explained, and detailed photographs illustrate how neat, even lines of stitching are achieved.
Customer Reviews:
This book is Exquisite!.......2007-05-30
I purchased this book earlier in the spring. I look at it almost everyday. I have taught myself how to hand piece and I never for one moment thought that I could. This book is a treasure, if you have the patience to teach yourself and have this book, you will learn to do exquisite work. I also purchased the CD from Amazon and have used it but not as much as the book-it would all depend on your individual learning style. The CD does a wonderful job of explaining and showing you how to create the stitches; I enjoying having both but now find myself using the book more than the CD. I also purchsed the perfect piecer from Jinny Beyer's site (althought at the time I am writing this Amazon has one listed)and this tool is a MUST HAVE if you are going to learn to hand piece in my opinion.
The book is beautiful, well written, includes some historical prespective (but not too much) you will not be sorry you purchased this book.
QUILTMAKING BY HAND.......2007-03-11
I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE CONDITION AND SPEED WITH WHICH THIS BOOK WAS RECEIVED
Excellent resource!.......2006-11-10
I quilt on my own--without benefit of classes or working with anyone else--much of the time. This book has helped me tremendously! Unlike most pattern books, the book tells the details of what it means to sew a certain type of stitch, suggests materials and tools, and even has quotes from older sewing and quilting reference books. Instructions for each process are available in as much detail as I have needed. Plus the pictures are beautiful and it's an added bonus to have patterns in the book, as well. I highly recommend this book.
The BEST HANDQUILTING-PIECING BOOK EVER!!!.......2006-11-05
This book is truly the only book I have ever had to refer to since I began hand piecing my tops of my quilts. I never was too comfortable with my sewing machine, even after purchasing a Computerized one with a large extention table, and all the extras. Since Jinny Beyer's book, along with her CD on Hand Piecing, I am now a pretty good, and must say pretty Fast!! at piecing. I love the running stitch technique, that she teaches, and even though it took me some time to get it down(I'd say a few hours of practice), I can now stitch fast, and accurate! no more up and down stitches(that look more like a zig zag). THE SECRET I LEARNED, WAS TO MAKE SURE THAT THE EYE PART OF THE NEEDLE WAS TOUCHING MY THIMBLE FINGER(MIDDLE FINGER) AS I DID THE RUNNING STITCH, WHICH WAS A LITTLE TRICKY FOR ME SINCE I WASN'T USED TO DOING IT THAT WAY. OOOHH!! BUT WHAT A DIFFERENCE NOW, "STRAIGHT, FAST, AND ACCURATE" STITCHES!!
I also, have found that the use of her "Perfect Piecer Template" for marking points for seams and those tricky angles has been a real BLESSING!! I absolute love Hand Piecing now, as much as I love Hand Quilting. The only thing Jinny could do to improve her book is to make it a Spriral-Bound Edition, that would make it even MORE Perfect!
Thanks Jinny Beyer!! for being a TRUE INSPIRATION!! YOU ARE DEFINETELY THE MASTER QUILTER OF ALL TIME!!!!
Great Book.......2006-06-03
I recently purchased this book.
It is imformative and I'm using as a workbook to learn handpiecing techniques.
For my first project, I used the Golden Rectangle templates to start a grandmother's flowergarden style quilt and was able to handpiece 9 blocks in 3 weeks while watching tv and sewing on Sunday with my 14 year old niece. I'm ready to arrange and sew the blocks together to begin handquilting.
I have been quilting for 15 years and never thought I would sew a handpieced quilt. This book helped provide the confidence to give it a try.
Jenny's recommendation to use 100% cotton thread is a good one. I did notice the thread does not stretch as with the cotton wrapped polyester.
Buy the book and enjoy yourself.

Book Description
This lively “potted” history of gardening in Britain takes us on a garden tour from the thorn hedges around prehistoric settlements to the rage for decking and ornamental grasses today, tracking down ordinary folk, aristocrats and grand designers.
Customer Reviews:
a delightful book.......2005-02-01
_A Little History of British Gardening_ is a delightful book. Jenny Uglow traces the history of British gardening from Roman times to the modern day, taking in gardens large and small and gardeners rich and poor along the way. The book is elegantly written, well researched, and beautifully illustrated with a plethora of black-and-white illustrations accompanying the text as well as several sections of color plates. Uglow supplies lots of colorful examples and anecdotes which keep the narrative engaging, and her love of gardening comes through clearly. This is marvelous reading for anyone interested in the history of gardening or in British gardens.

Customer Reviews:
Look inside the mind of a child or adult with NLD or AS.......2006-12-10
I hope when you read this book you endure through the first 63 pages of tedious technical differential diagnosis to make it to page 64. It is on pages 64 and 65 when this book paints in vivid colors the NLD and AS experience, as if you could briefly experience it yourself. Ms. Stewart explains what some have called "rigidity" in affected invididuals as their preference for generating "scripts" [essentially memorized responses] and interacting with life through their "scripts". Many parents and teachers make the mistake of trying to 'light fires' under NLD/AS children, but Ms. Stewart explains their slow processing speed as a need to translate the world into their own organized system before they can respond. I have given this book the highest rating - 5 stars - because author Stewart's look into the process of the NLD/AS mind is enthralling insight.
The book promises more than it can deliver. Six dense chapters follow the insights presented on page 63 and 64, but only on pages 126-127 "Practice Activities" do I find practical ideas that might make a difference. And too much of the book is devoted to school success concerns and too little on assisting NLD/AS children to developing lives outside school. Some suggestions seem almost silly: buy a watch for your child. list key words in assignments. These aren't deep insights, the suggestions should have been limited to ideas that are distinctly different than helping any child without NLD or AS.
Helping a CHild with Nonverbal Learning Disorder or Asperger's Syndrome: A Parent's Guide.......2006-07-24
This is a good book. It has practical tips that can be immediately utilized. It also goes into how you can help your child at school with IEPs, etc. I would recommend it as a supplemental book for parents with children having this problem.
Derivative.......2005-09-11
It seems like this book just copied information from earlier books on the subject and rushed to capitalize on the increase of AS diagnoses. Atwood's book is far more interesting, informative and original. I've seen this woman speak as well, and she seems a bit unclear.
Aspie Mom.......2005-08-04
As a mom of an 8 yo with Asperger's, I am always looking for new ways to help my son. This book just wasn't helpful to me. It could be my son's ADHD makes his issues so much different than those she addressed. I just didn't find anything in there to help him so I didn't bother finishing it.
I borrowed it from the library and for that I am thankful.
Perfect 1st book for information about NLD.......2003-04-25
If you want to know more about NLD and interventions for this disorder; this is the perfect "starter book." Although I have heard many people say this book is geared for parents/educators with older NLD kids, I feel it is important to read, no matter what the age of your NLDer.
It gives all the traits on NLD (along with checklists), the thoughtful opinions of the author as to what category NLD should be under and ways to help an NLDer of any age.
What I really like beside the above is how the author makes sure the reader understands the importance of trying to get our NLDers prepared for independent life. If you have a young child with NLD, reading these "insights" is sure to help you to be wary of overcompensating for your childs disability while at the same time giving your child what he/she needs. By explaining some problems "older" NLDer's have-such as hygiene; it helped me to recognize the importance of working on these issues now before they become a problem. You won't understand this concept fully until you read the book yourself.
The book is an easy read, gives you a lot of information so you will understand and know how to help your NLD child.
IF you have an AS child, I think this book would also be good but I felt it gave more insight into NLD than it did AS.
Book Description
The book offers readers ways to evaluate their child's strengths and weaknesses in areas such as visual and spatial functioning, writing problems, information processing and organizational skills, social and emotional capabilities, language skills, and interactive abilities. It offers specific strategies for intervening and helping the child to cope with these obstacles, such as teaching the child how to socialize with humor and empathy, alternatives for learning to write, tips for organizing daily activities, multi-tasking, and more.
