This book is a well written, easy to follow tutorial on how to make art from what others may consider junk. Great photos, inspiring ideas and good writing make this book a must have for innovative jewelry designers.

This was a gift for a friend who is always looking for ways to be creative. She also wanted to learn some basic jewelry making methods, and this seemed to fit the bill. She says she loves it and learns a little something new each time she tries a new project or modifies a project from the book!

I found this book to be interesting and fun but not as inspirational as I had hoped. I'm sure that I will use the techniques in the future however.

Found Objects=Fun Book.......2007-01-07

Marthe Le Van has put together a fun collection of easy to locate "found objects", the designs are usually funky and are achievable if you have a gerneral understanding of jewellery making. With written directions only, no pictures of the step by step, this is not for a beginner. There is a good introduction, listing the tools and terms together with basic instructions at the start of how to do certain tasks - i.e soldering, wire wrapping etc. Loads of ideas from pencils, to toothpicks,fur, bone and broken records etc. I especially liked the Check it Out section contained in each project, this section gives a brief overview/history of the material used. Not all projects have a Track it Down Paragraph, but when it is listed it is very handy, listing ideas such as "The electrical wire in the brooch came out of an old radio". Gallery was good but not brilliant as it could have been. Overall a nice book,glad I added it to my collection. I am sure my Mixed Media Jewellery students will appreciate it.

Great for Inspiration, not Necessarily for Beginners.......2006-04-02

Like all Lark books, this book is exceptional in it's choice of imagery. There are so many outstanding examples of found object jewelry, that this book is enough to give anyone's muse a hefty jolt of adrenalin.

I would like to emphasize that I do not believe this would be the best choice for a novice artist looking to learn techniques for making such assemblages. Many basic and advanced skills such as sawing, riveting and soldering are briefly covered, but I do not believe that they are meant to be the main focus of the book.

Projects included in the book list step-by-step instructions, but none show photos of the work in progress. This appears to be a major oversight, but it does allow the instructions be open to interpretation of the reader for future projects.

If looking to learn more about the various jewelry making techniques which could be used in found object jewelry, I highly recommend Joanna Gollberg's "Making Metal Jewelry: Projects, Techniques, Inspiration" which specifically covers cold connection techniques, (connections made without the use of heat) Tim McCreight's "Jewelry: Fundamentals of Metalsmithing" for cold connection and soldering techniques, or Carles Codina's
"The Complete Book of Jewelry Making: A Full-Color Introduction To The Jeweler's Art."

As a side note, I was quite amazed that no pieces were represented from two of the most prominent found object artists, Thomas Mann and Keith Lo Bue.

Of Basic Importance to Gardening in a Tropical Climate........2001-08-12

This book deserves five stars because it is the only gardening book extant that covers issues and concerns important and specific to Caribbean gardening. Had Mrs. Bannochie lived to see her book published, it is quite probable that it would have been far more comprehensive.

Chapter Two is invaluable for providing information on how to propagate specific climate appropriate plants. Chapter Four continues in the same vein, providing a comprehensive listing of tried and true favorites and pointers on how to grow them. My only criticisms are that the photographs (plates) in the center of the book are not of better quality and larger, that the tables at the end of the book fail to evaluate soil type on all the islands, and that there are so few diagrams or illustrations generally. Of course these paltry concerns may be remedied in a future revision. It is apparent that the co-author, Marilyn Light, faced a significant challenge in completing the book, and she is to be complimented for remaining true to Bannochie's vision.

Bannochie's writing style can be compared to having a conversation with an experienced, hands-on gardener while she strolls with you through her garden pointing out her favorite plants. Thus, I believe that one can actually sense which parts of the book were written by Marilyn Light after Bannochie's untimely death.

My copy of this book was lost or water damaged when my home was destroyed by hurricane on two different occasions. That I searched for and purchased it three times, is an indication of how important a reference it is for obtaining a general knowledge of not just Caribbean gardening, but gardening in any similar tropical climate.

This book is more than a guide........2005-01-04

These two authors have a list of credits to impress anyone. I suppose in some ways they could, therefore, sit back on their laurels and allow their reputations to sell their work. But not so! I could not find one single underwater image in this book which was not of the highest standard. From photographs of Divers and Sharks right down to the finest macro-photography, this is a book to show all budding underwater photographers how it should be done.

That said, this is not a book about photographs - it is a guide to the Marine Life of the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida. "What do you mean the Caribbean, Bahamas AND Florida - surely it's all the Caribbean" I hear some people say. But they're the sort of people who think whales are just big fish.

For those who are confused, the Bahamas are in the Atlantic Ocean and Florida is in the Gulf of Mexico. So, having sorted that out, we now understand (and appreciate!) the accuracy of the title.

Resembling something like a colourful version of a telephone directory, this book is packed with factual and accurate information laid out in a way that will not disappoint anyone who buys it. If you like "technical" it's here but if you like "technical made easy to understand" - it's also here.

Whilst I could have done without that photo of the diver hugging the Shark (picky, picky I know), this still remains an altogether excellent book and almost the only one you will need on your next trip south.

I'm a scuba instructor, and have spent years looking for the perfect book to use in fish identification and underwater naturalist courses. When I found this book, I stopped looking! It is the perfect combination,and makes everything understandable to the beginner, yet still informative to us old pros! The photo tips also come in very handy in teaching photography and videography... no Caribbean diver can afford not to have this book... I mean it!

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY DIVER/SNORKELER.......1999-09-14

This is my latest addition to my "diving book collection". I am a recent diving convert (the very best sport ever), and find myself reading this book constantly (more looking at the pics I suppose, which are gorgeous!). If you are looking for a fantastic book to invest in...LOOK NO FURTHER...BUY IT, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

The Perfect Book For People Getting Into Diving!.......1998-06-11

This is the perfect book for anyone who is getting into SCUBA diving. Not just a identification book, it explains about the different areas that you will see when diving: The wall, The Reef, and the Sand & Rubble Area. It helps you understand why you see different animals in particular areas. It will also help you understand what you will be seeing before you ever hit the water. It was my first book when I started diving and I've given it to many friends when they got certified to dive. I highly recommend it as a gift to anyone who has just started diving or is curious about diving.

Not for everyone, but a comprehensive study..........2002-09-18

If you are looking for a coffee table book with lots of glossy pictures, this book is not for you. However, if you are looking for a comprehensive study on the history, breeding, and ecology of this tribe, this is the book for you. As for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed my first trip through it and I love having it on the shelf as a reference.

Mary Miscisin's book was outstanding! It was a fun and easy read, yet full of informative and interesting ideas about people and how and why they act the way they do. Having been an educator for many years, this is THE book I could have used long ago to better interact with my students and their parents. The book's content makes easy what Myers-Briggs tries to do. I would recommend it to anyone who has a desire to deal more effectively with children or adults.

As an educator with 30 years experience in the classroom and in coaching, I wish I could have read Mary Miscisin's book 30 years ago! I would have been a much better teacher and coach because I would have had a much better understanding of my students and athletes and how to more effectively communicate with them based on their colors. I couldn't put the book down because I kept meeting past students as well as people I know now represented in Miscisin's creative and stimulating examples. "Showing Our True Colors" was so challenging and packed with information, yet so simple to understand and implement. Every parent, teacher, and coach ought to read the book. It is a must for couples and anyone who wants to communicate more effectively. Where was this book when I needed it? Oh, yeah, I still do need it today. Thanks Mary!

Easy-to-Use Reference Guide.......2004-11-16

Miscisin and company do an excellent job of taking a complex topic, stripped it of the "psycho-babble" that can turn you off (or at least give you a headache) and presented it in a fun, easy to use guide on different styles. As a Human Resources professional. As a person who just wants to know more about me and those with whom I interact, it's been of phenomenal help. Most helpful is the section on "when colors fade". It has provided insight into how to manage and assist people who are in the middle of burnout and are heading downhill personally and professionally. Read it because it is interesting and informative. Hang on to it because it is because you'll keep referring to it.
