Misleading Title.......2003-09-08
I didn't care for this book and here's why. The author's coverage is much too superficial to be really useful for getting started in this hobby. You certainly need more than what is in this book, yet the very misleading title states it has "everything you need to know".
The book is heavy on photos and light on details. The author isn't shy about giving his opinions which would be good, but unfortunately he doesn't always say why. At one point he states that under-gravel filters are bad, but tells us since much has been written about them the reader can find out why elsewhere. True enough, but excuse me, why am I bothering with this book? It is supposed to have "everything you need to know" isn't it?
The fact is there is nothing in this book that can't be found in better detail, and free, by doing an internet search of various Discus related web sites. However, I do recommend a much better book, "Discuss Fish" by T. Giovanetti which has much more information, and better, detailed explanations.
Overall score: Thumbs way down.
Excellent for the beginner.......2003-01-13
The purpose of this book is to aid the beginning discus hobbiest. It does this well by providing all of the basics to start anyone down the right path to keep discus. For the more advanced hobbiest it doesn't offer as much, but that wasn't the purpose of this volume.
Want to raise Discus? BUY this book!.......2001-02-22
I have owned this book for several years. I also own several "coffee-table" sized books on Discus. But this is the book I find myself referring to most for information on how to keep my Discus healthy. The author's practical, no-nonsense style is informative, and very easy to read. It is a bargain, considering all the good tips and advice contained within. Highly recommended for beginning to intermediate-level aquarists who want to raise "The King of the Aquarium".
A Must Read.......2000-09-21
I found that the book had real information that you can apply when getting started in the hobby. I find myself going back to the book time and time again finding small bits of useful techniques that I missed reading it the first time. I have found that if you apply the advice given in the book you will get off to a great start with the fish and have many years of enjoyment to look foward too. For such a small book it is packed with excellent advice that other books overlook and just want to show you photos of fish. This book really tells you how to do things. This is book is a must read to add to your collection.
Knowledge and Experience.......2000-08-22
The man has forgotten more than the rest of us will ever know.

Gourd Artists and What They Do.......2007-07-30
The philosophy of the arthur (DAVID MACFARLANE) is wonderful. One can learn much more than the BASICS in Gourd Art from this book. The pictures of the artists and their work explained are tops. The book reveals where one can go in the persuit of gourd crafting.
Just what the DR ordered!!.......2007-07-25

Beyond the Basics:Gourd Art.......2007-02-18
This is a beautiful book, the projects are great, it gives you some wonderful ideas for your own works of art. It gives you a limited amount of information on the basics, not a good book for beginners. Anyone who knows the basics, it's a great book for them. A great second book in a reference collection, for the gourd artist.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2005-01-19
I've been interested in herbs and herbal gardens for years. Many books explain the uses for the herbs, but less have the fantastic garden layouts and detailed instructions for growing the herbs. Medicinal herbs are a great thing to use, I grew up using them. I just wasn't quite sure how to go about choosing which herbs, planting, etc. I'm not a gardener. It is perfect for those of us who know about the herbs (though it does give you many interesting recipes and details of the usage, as well), but want the practicalities as well.
well organized and practical.......2002-10-22
This practical guide to growing healthful herbs includes 20 specific plans for such things as cold and flu gardens, healthy heart, windowsill medicine cabinet, skin care, first aid, hair care, relaxation garden, and lots more. Recipes - culinary as well as medicinal - are included with each garden type.
The book begins with an overview of medicinal herbs, with their uses, cautions, and raising and harvesting advice. The "at a glance" box directs the reader to the gardens (always multiple) the plant is used in, so you can see what complements it and how the plant is used.
Tables include specific plant care and propagation advice and uses in the garden for attracting and repelling bugs. Byers includes the basics on getting started, garden maintenance and harvesting, but the heart of this book is practical herb use. Byers even concludes with an appreciative and practical chapter on the wild herbs, otherwise known as weeds.
Wonderful and Helpful.......2002-05-08
I own this, though I havn't actually used it yet.
It is very well organzied and includes lots of information about many herbs and where they grow. It also includes information about how to make different teas, salves, ointments etc.
The only thing I didn't like about it was the garden section seemed wasted. The recipies in the section seem wonderful, but I don't think it was really necessary for the author to draw out garden plans for "tummy ache help" and "healthy heart garden" among others.
Great Book!.......2002-03-03
This book is everything I hoped it would be. I love the breakdown and categorizing in this book. It makes herbal gardening easy for even us beginners. An absolutely GREAT book!

Great guide on growing herbs!.......2006-11-05
This books has many wonderful tips on growing herbs! It makes designing an herb garden a wonderful experience. A good companion book is Mary El-Baz's "The Essence of Herbal and Floral Teas."
Enchanting, Informative Book!.......2003-02-27
This books is all you'll need if you want to grow herbs. I love the great recipes for teas and herb sugars. The many detailed garden plans are the best part of the book and they're laid out simply with common herbs. I wish I'd gotten this pretty little tome years ago before I planted my first cutting of Mint!
A Beginning Gardener's Opinion.......2000-04-28
This is one of the most informative books I have read on the subject of herb gardening. I found the book difficult to put down. It includes extensive descriptions of individual herbs from the most ordinary to the hard-to-find. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the book are the recipes for herbal tea blends and corresponding health benefits, which are listed thoughout the book. Also included are garden plans, propagation methods, and harvesting tips. I highly recommend this book as a reference guide for the beginner or the seasoned gardener.

Completely revised and rewritten, Sue Minter's beautiful book on the healing properties of plants shows how to harness the healing potential of your own garden. Extremely practical, it offers clear, step-by-step advice for gardeners with easily accessible charts for plant uses, how they should be applied and when and where to grow them.

a delightful romp through a variety of topics, great fun.......2003-02-19
This delightful book, "Field Days," perfectly fits its title. As author Roger B. Swaim writes in the introduction, field days means not only "the sense of there being explorations and scientific investigations carried on outdoors," but also that it carries connotations of "the sense of unfettered activity, extreme pleasure, delight, and enthusiasm." In this work Swaim explores a number of biology and natural history issues in his native New England - and often of the world at large - ranging with pleasure and enthusiam from one topic to another almost as a butterfly flitting about a sunny meadow. Much in the spirit of his book, I provide a small review sample of some of the chapters of his book.
"Trackside" explores an unusual topic, railroad flora. He writes that trains are often excellent dispersers of seeds, often resulting in many exotic and unusual plants being found along railroads. From alianthus to onions, sesame to cucumbers, snapdragons to petunias, castor bean from Africa to Dallis grass from South America, pears to apricots, all have been found along railroads, places traditionally thought of of as waste places. Swaim explores how these plants arrive in such an odd location, how they survive, and just marvels at the wonder of it, of how nature always finds a way.
"Gypsy Moths" explores one of the most hated denizens of the eastern United States, insect invaders that spread like a plague ever year to the chagrin of local residents, "horrified by the thousands of dark, hairy caterpillars with their blue and red warts, horrified by the incessant leaf chewing, and revolted by the steady drizzle of caterpillar droppings from the branches overhead." Swaim explores the biology of these insects, their history in the United States, their effects on the local ecology, and of humanity's war against them. Even with these much maligned organisms Swaim finds interesting and enlightened things to say.
"Guests at Work" explores one of those uniquely New England pasttimes; making maple syrup. If you never knew how it was made and wanted to know this chapter is a treat, showing how even small residential plots have yielded rich syrup, from light amber Grade A syrup to molasses-dark Grade C.
Showing his enthusiasm for the natural world world knows no bounds, in "The Ungracious Host" Swaim explores a subject I don't see often discussed at least in my readings in popular natural history writings; lice. Exploring their biology, the different types of lice that afflict people, their interaction with humans, and how people combat them, Swaim provided me with information I never knew!
There are of course many other subjects discussed in "Field Days," from fungus to growing and harvesting cranberries to evergreens to pollen (and hay fever) to how animals and plants deal with the arrival of spring to issues of lake water quality...so many topics are discussed with humor, authority, and enthusiasm that there is something for everyone.
READABLE & RE-READABLE.......2001-07-02
Roger Swain not only writes of the garden: how and when to "let nature take its course;" photosynthesis and evergreen leaves; future, scientific uses for cranberry juice beyond asking a bartender for a more sophisticated drink than ginger ale; bee venom as a treatment for arthritis---he also makes all of his extaordinary thoughts interesting and entertaining.
This is a book for people who realize that our actions have effects on our world. and, perhaps more importantly, it should be read by those people, including politicians, who do not.
Swain is the science editor of "Horticulture" magazine. He writes gracefully (i.e. in his "Fair Days For Vegetables" he tells us that "For many, just the subject of tomatoes is enough to leave a good taste in their mouths.") and his essays can be read and re-read. My personal favorite, which I've read three different times, is about the declining quality of our water: "A Drink You Can Swim In." Swain writes of the popularity of bottled waters and cleverly quotes Samuel Clemens: "To increase something's popularity you have only to increase the price...." RECOMMENDED

Customer Reviews:
Profound beyond words.......2007-01-11
This big book of photos is as spare, elegant and moving as a Basho haiku. i first encountered this book in a bookstore and it stopped me in my tracks. it is essentially a book of photographs with no text. the photographs depict the "life cycle" of a bunch of white tulips, which are photographed in tight detail. They change page to page, from pristine, virginal buds to literally the dust and fallen pollen of spent petals crumbling into the air. It is heartbreaking, beautiful, mysterious, sad-- almost a religious series of images if you roll that way. i gave it as an xmas gift to several people this year who have endured personal loss recently. The pages over oversized folios, printed on a double fold of high grade paper, which gives the image more gravitas and dimension. the page design, print registration and binding are exquisite. it will change your life (or your perception of your life).

Book Description
Baby Buddhas: A Guide for Teaching Meditation to Children is the first book to show parents and educators how to teach meditation to preschool-age children. Through irresistible photos and easy-to-follow text, Lisa Desmond clearly explains her copyrighted method of teaching meditation to children 18 months to three years old. Baby Buddhas also highlights the benefits of meditation for parents and children and shows how to incorporate meditation into family life.
Part One, "Creating Your Space," explains how to create a simple meditation space in the home or school and explains the importance of sound, posture, and breathing. In Part Two, "Adult Meditations," adults learn three meditations to give them an opportunity to learn and meditate on their own before teaching children. Part Three, "Children's Meditations," includes 10 meditations suitable for children, organized from simplest to most complex. The children's meditations include the "Sunshine Meditation," in which the child learns to breathe in a "sunshine ball of light" full of love. The "Om Meditation" helps children calm themselves and feel love, even when their parents are away. All the children's meditations use repetition and simple words and images that children can easily understand.
Parents who have used Lisa's techniques marvel at how their children have become calmer and more focused since they started meditating. With Baby Buddhas parents and educators can give the children in their care a gift that will last a lifetime.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring and helpful.......2006-02-18
The techniques are drawn from a variety of religious traditions, and the author does a good job of being specific and clear about how to set up your space, what props to collect, and how to approach the feared and revered practice of meditation with kids. This book also contains wonderful, inspriring, color photos of glowing children getting back to their true selves. my only complaint is that there is a lot of time spent re-hashing meditations that are essentially the same. I would have liked a more general descpriotn of types of chants, thoughts, and breathing techniques rather than a play-by-play of the "breathe in love/joy/light breathe out fear/anger/bad" in multiple chapters. One of a kind, and a great tool for mindful mamas and papas.
Excellent/ 5 stars.......2006-01-15
This book is perfect for busy parents trying to introduce their children to energy, meditation and other high level concepts. The author presents information in an easy to follow and read format.I enjoyed that the suggestions were not too out there to actually implement.
I am also a fan of the meditation/relaxation CD series "Indigo Dreams". The book and this CD have made it possible for me to introduce these healthy concepts to my children. (Sorry about the one star. I pressed the wrong button and the system will not let me change it) This is a 5 star book
A great resource for any parent!.......2005-05-24
We purchased the book after our daughter learned meditation in Lisa's program. We were truly amazed at the coping and calming techniques she learned as 2 year old. We have used the techniques in the book to help manage and enhance everyday life as well as for dealing with difficult situations (seperation, death, etc...). Lisa has made the process amazingly simple. It is an incredible tool for helping to connect with your child while providing them with some important skills.
Simple guidelines for setting up a meditation space.......2004-09-09
In Baby Buddhas: A Guide For Teaching Meditation To Children, author Lisa Desmond draws upon her more than 25 years of experience and expertise teaching meditation to children ages 18 months to three years, and children preschool through eight grade, to instruct parents and care givers on how to go about teaching preschool-aged children on how to meditate. Simple guidelines for setting up a meditation space, learning specific terms, specific meditations for adults (sending love to a child, cherishing hope for world peace) and children ('OM', cleansing breath, catching blessings, and much more) fill this gentle and patient guide to balancing family and spiritual needs. Color photographs, creative ideas, and guidelines round out an all-around superb guide for parents.
