Book Description

Follow the most remarkable episode in prehistory in this all-in-one compendium of everything dinosaur. This volume marries the very latest in paleontology with an easily accessible atlas format to illuminate the mysteries of dinosaur origins, clues to what they looked like and where they lived, and, most intriguingly, what happened to them. In vivid recreations of the prehistoric world and fascinating see-through overlays featuring 3-D computer graphics of skeletal structures, DK's Dinosaur Atlas brings dinosaurs to life! AUTHOR BIO: Dougal Dixon has written many children's books and encyclopedias. He has participated in a number of worldwide dinosaur excavations, and in 1993 was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Educational Journalism by the Educational Press Association of America.

5 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Atlas by DK Publishing.......2007-01-18

I purchased this book for my 6 year old Nephew for Christmas, and he absolutely loves it. It is very detailed and informative, and besides all of that, he loves dinosaurs.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-09

I bought this book for my dino-enthusiast after he saw it at a book fair. A must have from the outside- but once in, my child lost interest. The overlays are really cool and we revisit them often, but the CD, which makes you think there will be many activites has only view and a slideshow of sorts. The kids can see how the skeleton moves and then that's about it.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Journey into Dinosaur Worlds.......2006-09-14

Who discovered the first dinosaur?
What color were dinosaurs?
How are remains excavated and displayed?

The Dinosaur Atlas is a spiral bound book complete with see-through overlays, a CD-ROM with 3-D computer graphics and information on the most important fossil sites in the world. The book is divided into sections according to location:

North America
South America
Europe
Africa
Asia
Australia and Antarctica

Some of the fascinating discoveries include a Pterosaur egg discovered in China that contained a fully developed unhatched flying reptile. Then you have winged insects with 8-inch wingspans buzzing through the air. The feathered carnivores from Asia are quite fascinating.

"Dinosaur names are built up from parts of mainly Greek words, with some Latin." Here are a few examples from the book:

"Thero - beast
Pod - foot"

Result: "Theropods"

Saurus means lizard or reptile, which gives an explanation for many of the names. This book not only shows you beautiful pictures of dinosaur worlds, it explains everything imaginable. Now and then you find interesting information about various locations, like on the page about China:

"Did You Know?

The Liaoning forest would have
echoed to the clicks of cicadas,
the croaks of frogs,
and the buzz of dragonflies."

The Dinosaur Cove in Australia is shown with lush vegetation and has an almost mythical appeal in layers of olive and jade. The artist's imagination brings an otherwise barren region to life. A picture of what the area looks like today is of course in sharp contrast with the vibrant dinosaur fantasy, although I could not help thinking how this scene looked like a picture right out of a walk in a Northwest forest.

Paleontologists and fossil hunters are featured throughout, along with pictures of archeological discoveries. DK has created one of the most fascinating books on Dinosaurs and it is not only comprehensive, it is compelling and creative.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide for teaching young paleotologists about how and where dinosaurs lived.......2006-09-07

I have been hooked on dinosaurs every since my great aunt took me to the Great Hall of Dinosaurs at the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University. This was so long ago the apatosaurus was known as a brontosaurus because they had the head of a camposaurus sitting on top of the giant skeleton that dominates the hall, along with Rudolph Zallinger's "The Age of Reptiles" mural. One of the neat things there is a triceratops on which a faux skin has been placed on one side. I mention that because in this "Dinosaur Atlas" authors John Malam and John Woodward, along with consultant Professor Michael Benton, go so far beyond that display that it makes me want to laugh with delight. Finding out about dinosaurs in the 21st century is proving to be a lot of fun.

This "Dinosaur Atlas" has main maps that show major fossil locations and list some of the prehistoric animals found there, followed by pages that provide additional information about both the locations and the animals. The section opener pages consist of six main sections corresponding to the continents (Antarctica is included with Australia). Color-coded silhouettes on the maps locate where prehistoric animals have been found, with the numbers corresponding with the silhouettes in the profile list. Each main section also has an artwork scene that shows not only dinosaurs but other animals of interest, as well as what the environment was like at that time. Today's Landscape information boxes compare the present-day world with that of the dinosaurs, and Fact Boxes throughout the book provide additional information on the topic, while Biography Boxes reveal the people behind the finds. There are also Did You Know? boxes that reveal interesting facts about a dinosaur or a fossil site. You will also find a transparent overlay page in each section, with a prehistoric animal of special interest. The overlay provides further information, enabling readers to see the skeletal structure.

For example, the section on North America identifies the Morrison Formation, a vast area of sandstone formed during the Jurassic Period that left Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Diplodocus, and Stegosaurus skeletons in the area of what is now Dinosaur National Monument. That is one of six locations highlighted in the section, and hopefully every young would-be palentologist who reads this book will have the opportunity to visit at least one of the places described. The section also focuses on Corythosaurus, the most common hadrosaur (duck-bill) in these areas. The overlay is of a skeleton of an Allosaurus, accompanied by a comparison of its skull, with the muscles and then the skin added to it. The introductory section of the atlas provides an overview on how to use it, a look at life on earth and the rise of the reptiles, and then at the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous worlds. Malam and Woodward also address the question of What is a Dinosaur? and explain the basics of the fossil record. They also have a pair of two-page spreads on both flying dinosaurs and swimming dinosaurs. The death of the dinosaurs and what came after them are covered at the end of the book. After answering over a dozen questions about dinosaurs (e.g., Who discovered the first dinosaur? What color were dinosaurs?), they look at the process of excavation and display. A Glossary of key terms will also be of help to young readers.

The "Dinosaur Atlas" also covers with a CD-Rom in the front cover that includes looks at an Allosaurus, Saltasaurus, Pterodactylus, Spinosaurus, Protoceratops, and Richmond Pliosaur. For each you have four options: (1) 360-degree rotating skeleton, (2) 360-degree rotating figures of the dinosaurs with muscles and skin, (3) loops of the skeletons shown walking, flying and swimming, as appropriate, and (4) views respectively of a biting skull, rising up on hind legs to eat from a tree, diving to catch and eat a fish, eating a small dinosaur that scurries by, braying up on hind legs, and eating while swimming along. You can enlarge the photos to approximately half-screen size. What you have here is pretty basic in terms of animation, but you will get a sense of how they looked and how they moved. All things considered the CD-Rom is not as impressive as the book, but that is because the book is pretty impressive. You know from the fact it is a DK publication that you are going to find multiple illustrations on virtually every page (I especially like the ones where they put dinosaurs into photographs of an environment). But the whole point here is to show how and where dinosaurs lived, and by that standard DK's "Dinosaur Atlas" is a big success.

I was a little reluctant about buying the book because my son reads at a 3rd grade level but he loves that book. The reading I think is at a level for a kindergardener but the illustrations use of colors and ]the gold coin will make even an 8 year old happy. He loves the coin and loves putting it in the sharks mouth.

My 3 year old can't get enough of this book. It's interactive and a great story. He wants to keep the coin with him when he goes to bed each night!

A wonderful educational book for all ages. Although the summary indicates this book is for children 9-12, I used this book for a presentation on the rain forest to children from 5-6 years old. The teacher of the class enjoyed the book so much, she is requesting a copy for her classroom. If anyone is considering a trip to a tropical environment with children, this would be a fabulous book to take along.

I originally checked this book out at my local library, but since there were several projects in it that I wanted to try (and I have), I truly felt it worth the money to buy it. I loved the way she took the basic tote and showed the different variations for me to try. The directions were understandable and easy to follow.

      Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Great First Purse Book. So Glad I Purchased It!.......2007-02-12

If you learn visually like I do this book has very good instructions and pictures. I'm not a very confidant crafter or sewer. This book however helped me start sewing again and to actually like what I made. I sewed the Hoop Handle Bag pictured above and although not without flaws, I was thrilled how it came out.

The first part of the book has basic instructions about tools and fabrics. Pages 29-83 has sewn bags, crochet, woven, photo transfer. Even a bag crocheted out of plastic bag strips. Good for teens. I use the instructions for the Oil Cloth Tote to make shopping totes any size and out of any fabric choice. Something I did do different from this books instructions: I do not trim the seams as much as instructed or trim off the triangle after sewing the bottom of the cloth purses. I think this ruins the integrity of the stitches. Leaving that little piece of fabric does not really add bulk. I use my totes for grocery shopping and they are holding up really well. (if you have trouble finding the plastic hoops for the Hoop Bag, search ebay under stores and you can find a wide variety of colors and sizes at good prices)

Pages 86-125 are all no sew and embellished bags. Honestly I will probably never make any of these bags but there are instructions for a cigar box purse, vinyl purse, tin can purses, book binding purse and more.

All in all having a little sewing experience will help and you may find you do alter some instructions a little, but this book is a great place to start making purses!

      5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-11-07

I order every one of Sherri Haab's books because she seems to be interested in everything I am interested in and all of her books are fun and fabulous. I would highly recommend this book if you are interested at all in making handbags of any sort.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-10-13

I ordered this book because of it's 5-star rating. When it arrived, I found the purses to be more artsy/craftsy where I was expecting something upscale and designer-like. My fault, the cover photos should have given me a clue. Anyway, I was disappointed and ended up returning the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas from simple to intricate.......2006-09-03

This book had purses for everyone, sewers and non-sewers, old and young, small and large. The purses are hip and the patterns are easy to understand. I already had some of the patterns but they even presented them in a better way with great step-by-step COLOR photos.

Too simplistic. Too many pictures and not enough information. Even the info given is not detailed enough. Many common household plants mot even listed ex.the snake plant. I purchased this book on the great reviews and this is the first time I'm very disappointed. Trust me and save your money.

3 out of 5 stars A beautiful book for beginners........2003-12-09

Easy-Care Guide to Houseplants is a beautiful book to look at, but it is for the beginner. The "how to" section does go into detail with beautiful pictures showing you each step of the way. The decorating ideas look nice, but it would be more practical if they were silk plants. The placement of the plants is very impractical, either the plants don't get enough light or watering the plants would be a hugh chore.
The Plant Profiles is just an introduction to houseplants. This book is definitely not for the experienced houseplant person who is looking for real information on individual plants. Experienced houseplant people keep looking this book isn't for you.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Reference Book!.......2003-09-11

I have yet to met someone who wouldn't appreciate a healthy indoor plant. This book is excellent - it's concise, informative and written in a way even the most inexperienced plant owner can understand. It's worth buying just for the pictures alone! Come on, bring nature indoors!

This was a very informative book. I have never been a able to keep a plant alive before. Now people say I have a green thumb.
My home and deck are full of healthy beautiful plants. Every plant,in the book, has a great photo and full discription of light needs and exact fertilizer times and needs. I have had a hard time finding a few of the fertilizers needed, so I may start tring some of the great fertilizer recipes given. Every thing needed is here. How to propigate, transplant, divide. A full list of discriptions of possible plant problems and the solutions. I would suggest this book to anyone as a great resource. As a matter of fact, I've lent it out a few times.(But I make sure to get it bact soon)

Most of us have time for only one thing nowadays, simplicity. This book simplifies caring for house plants. I still cannot find 20-10-10 plant food it recommends [for my aloe plant], but that's a small thing. I'll probably find it online.

      4 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book.......2005-06-20

As a very novice gardener, I needed a book that covered the basic of houseplant care. Well, this is it. I especially like the fact that it is full of color photos.

The first third of this book is dedicated to plant care: light, water, temperature, air, humidiry, potting, propagation, etc.

The last two third is the Galery of Houseplants, which lists lots of plants, how to care for them. I was able to find all the plants I already had in my house, and even found ones that I had no idea what they were.

4 out of 5 stars Great overview book!.......2005-01-10

As a novice gardener I've perused a lot of books and usually they're either really wordy, use terms that a college professor might, or just don't quite have what I need. This book is a really nice overview of everything related to indoor gardening, with lots of photos to explain what they're talking about or doing. I especially love a photographic section on plant problems, diseases and bugs - a lot of the books out there 'explain' what to look for while this one actually shows an afflicted plant. I recommend this book for anyone who's looking to get further into the indoor plants (without actually looking for a degree...).

What's a dyed-in-the-wool gardener to do when faced with stubborn Old Man Winter's downright refusal to let much of anything grow? Force it, that's what. Forcing is the art of convincing a bulb, branch, houseplant, or cutting to flower when it would otherwise be dormant. So when the drabness of winter and its attendant exorbitant price for cut flowers hits you, try forcing.

It's not difficult, but it does take some planning and foresight. If you want to force bulbs to flower in February, for instance, you have to order them in late summer so that you can pot them up in the fall. Twigs, on the other hand, are much easier to force: just cut them after six weeks of cold weather, put them in some water, and watch the virtual spring of your warm rooms transform them into leggy, flowering spirea, corylopsis, forsythia, or catkins, for instance. Author Katherine Whiteside explores associated topics such as choosing the best container and presentation within the home, as well as topics only an expert could love ("the narcissus question").

Forcing, Etc. is a good read. It's not a reference book in the truest sense of the word; the lack of an index is at fault there. This doesn't mean that there's not an awful lot of good information here for beginners and adepts, well and entertainingly written. But when you want to check on the fertilizer ratio for your calla lilies, you'll have to page through the entire book to find it (in a very small typeface, too). But with Richard Felber's gorgeous photos on every page, maybe that's not such a bad thing to have to do. --Stefanie Durbin

      Book Description

Now in paperback, Forcing, etc, with 60,000 copies in print, is the well-received guide to indoor, through-the-winter gardening: As beautiful as it is instructive, writes Michael Pollan. Town & Country calls it: Inspiration for lightening up the bleak days of winter . . . Forcing, etc will open up a whole new world beyond paper-whites. After perusing Forcing, etc, even those with the blackest of thumbs will want to try forcing bulbs and spring branches into bloom on a winter windowsill.-Rebecca's Garden.

Written by award-winning author Katherine Whiteside, here is the complete guide to indoor gardening, filled with 125 exquisite full-color photographs. Covering pre-chilling to potting up, putting away and water-forcing, Forcing, etc combines hands-on how-to with an artist's passion for detail to show how to grow and/or force dozens of common and exotic plants: hardy bulbs-crocus, narcissus, muscari, and iris; tender bulbs-oxalis, calla lily, clivia; branches-from apple and apricot to forsythia, moosewood, and quince; and tender plants-fuchsia, coleus, clematis, and scented geraniums. In addition, the author focuses on presentation and display, choosing unexpected containers, and orchestrating an indoor garden for balance of bloom and color.

      3 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2007-02-17

I was put off by the book's lack of an index and its casual, meandering approach. The photographs are pleasing, but not awesome. If one is to own only one book on the subject, this would not be the best choice.

5 out of 5 stars So fun and easy!.......2006-03-27

Katherine Whiteside makes forcing look really fun and easy, and it turns out it is! This book inspired me to try all sorts of things I've only seen in pictures. Her ideas are simple and wonderful and the way she writes is so down to earth that you feel confident that you can do it!
Get it, try it. You'll really enjoy it.
(It makes a really nice coffee table book too!)

5 out of 5 stars Expert gardening advice blends with floral styling.......2003-10-10

Expert gardening advice blends with floral styling techniques as Katherine Whtieside offers an introduction to the finer art of forcing bulbs, branches, and other flowers in Forcing, Etc. Plant features include the most common flowers which are grown through forcing, offering tips for plant pairing and arranging. With Richard Felber's lush photos throughout, Forcing, Etc. makes an exceptional visual display in addition to a practical guide.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty to look at, but not alot of substance.......2000-08-08

I absolutely agree with the review given by Tom Krischan on 1/28/2000. This book is beautiful to look at, with lots of photographs that are well-taken and gorgeously displayed. That's the good part.... Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information in here that even the most basic gardener wouldn't already know from other sources. Bulbs are the primary area of discussion, with houseplants and cuttings from trees and shrubs also being discussed sparingly. It's not the best book for in-depth answers to your other forcing needs. It is nice to look at, though. A definite fixture for aesthetics on my coffee table at home, if nothing else.

3 out of 5 stars Great photographs, but limited information.......2000-01-29

It's a nice coffee table book. Something you look at once, then never touch again. Clearly not a reference book.

The first 85 pages discuss forcing hardy and tender bulbs. The remaining 68 pages talk about house plants, twigs, and cuttings. About half of the book is pictures, and much of the text from the other half is double spaced. There is not alot of information about forcing in this book.

Another problem, the book has no index. So when you wish to find information on forcing Amaryllis, you must page through it manually. No appendix in the back, no tables, no charts, and no reference section at all (except for a meager list of two dozen garden catalog companies).

There are pockets of detailed and interesting facts. But the poorly organized format makes it a chore to find this info.

On the plus side, the plant photography is great. It is the most worthwhile part of the book. Hundreds of photos of interesting, clear, crisp, and properly identified plants populate this book (unfortunately, since there is no index, you'll never find the picture you want - when you want it).

Nice coffee table book, but not much more.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not the definative houseplant book - but still good........2006-10-16

The Miracle Gro guide to houseplants is much better than many other houseplant books in one respect: there are so many detailed photographs on the actual care and maintanence of houseplants. Many other houseplant books I've read have drawings or just explanations of how to repot plants and other similar tasks. There are some great step-by-step instructions in this book.

One problem with this book is the way that the plant sections are laid out. I found it difficult to locate certain plants. All the plants are listed alphabetically by their common name. This shouldn't be too big of problem, except many of my plants I do not know the common name of. Also, if you are looking up, say, Orchids, they are spread all over the listing because of the different variations. I wish all the Orchids were in one sections, subdivided by subspecies from there.

There are some great pictures in this book; however, some of the plant pictures are a little small. Overall, this is a nice book to use in conjunction with other houseplant guides. I would not consider this the definative houseplant guide but it was definately worth the time I invested in reading it.

3 out of 5 stars Guide to Growing Healthy Houseplants .......2006-02-13

Overall very concise and informative on each specific house plant. My only peeve is that the pictures of each species be larger. Small pictures makes it hard to identify the right species of unknown plants.

4 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book.......2005-10-13

This book was a very helpful guide with great coloured pictures. It's easy to read and understand. With this book I was finally able to identify some plants that I had.

                Book Description

What happened to that sunny outgoing child of eight?  As parents of nine-year-olds often discover, nine is a tricky age.  Children are more distant from Mother and Father; they're more independant and rely on friends for companionship, or they have a tendency to spend time alone.  Some nines are boisterous and wild, others thoughtful and withdrawn.  Helping parents learn how to cope with the unpredictable nine-year-old is the aim of this practical guide from the Gesell Institute.

Nine-year-olds are hovering on the brink of adolescence, and this in part contributes to their up-and-down nature.  Dr. Louis Bates Ames and Carol Chase Haber paint a vivid picture of the child at this age and offer useful advice to make life easier for parents and children alike.

5 out of 5 stars Your Nine Year Old.......2005-09-11

If you want to take the guesswork out of understanding your kids, read her series, it's excellent!! Sections are broken down for quick read...no need to read cover to cover, just whats baffeling you at the moment. You'll tune into your kids incredibly. Instead of thinking "If I repeat myself one more time..." you'll understand their developmental stage and see in their other actions why you are repeating. Try to get the book one yr behind and one yr older in addition to your childs age. You will find your child may have some older characteristics at his/her age or not have quite developed a certain cognitive skill yet. We're so focused on "Babies Development" that sometimes we forget every year is a developmental process thru adulthood. I'm a much better parent having kept up with her series from year 3 forward. I'm at year 9 now. I get comments all the time from how well behaved my child is and how tuned in I am to him from teachers and friends. If you want parenting confidence....you'll definitely get it with this series.

                5 out of 5 stars Very insightful........1999-07-15

Reading this book has helped make nine very enjoyable. This series of books is great. Understanding the different stages takes out the frustration and makes watching and helping your childern grow and develop a JOY.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, helpful information........1999-01-25

When you know what behaviors are "normal" for your child's age you can relax, stop the worry, and focus on appropriate solutions. This whole series of books accurately defines the ages and stages of children. These books keep your expectations realistic and allow you to avoid anger caused by a lack of understanding of your child's developmental stages.
