Cutting Horse Book.......2007-03-28
I think this stey-by-step guide was very helpful and informative. The illustrations were great and helped me to understand the point of what was being said.
Well put together :-)
IF YOU'RE INTO CUTTING, THIS IS A MUST HAVE!!!.......2002-04-13
This is a great book; well written and lots of photographs so you can see what he's talking about. So many of the horse training books are so phony - all in "horse talk" and you don't really understand what they mean. Not this book - it's easy to understand even for a beginner or a spectator.
First-rate book by a first-rate horseman.......1998-03-06
Written by a two-time winner of the National Cutting Horse Association's Futurity and member of the NCHA Hall of Fame, Leon Harrell's folksy and illuminating cutting horse text is an excellent introduction to this sport. Harrell addresses the basic concerns of the novice cutter (and those who are wondering whether this is the sport for them at all) in understandable and clear terms. He offers tips on everything from selection of tack to finding the right horse, provides detailed descriptions of his training methods, and details the rules of cutting competition. Harrell's anecdotes provide effective illustrations of his training techniques and also let the novice know what to expect in competition. He is generous with advice to the newcomer and also with praise to those who have helped him become the NCHA Hall of Famer he now is.
One of the most attractive features of this well-organized, beautifully-illustrated, clearly-written text is simply the feel of the book. Harrell writes about his horses like a man who loves them. His training methods are geared toward getting the most out of a horse, and making the horse enjoy it. He describes cutting as an exciting yet friendly sport, and when he advises the rookie cutter to ask for help from the best riders at a competition, the reader gets the feeling that anyone who asked Harrell for help would get all they needed. He describes his great horses (Smart Date, Nu Bar, Fizzabar, and the rest) with real respect and affection, and when he casually remarks, "I thought the world of [Fizzabar] and the mare thought quite a bit of me" the reader understands why.
Leon Harrell has made a fine career of training horses. He is especially good with the spooky, sensitive ones. After reading this book it is easy to understand why. Leon Harrell is an admirable trainer. He's clearly not too shabby as a man, either. If I am ever in Texas with a young cutting horse, I know who I'll call for advice.

An All Around Guide to Cutting.......2000-04-22
Barbara Schulte's point-by-point guide to cutting and competing devotes about half of its content to the mental aspect of the sport. Barbara covers topics such as the importance of goal setting, mental strategies, and the power of positive thinking. In the remaining half, she deals with selecting the right horse, making sure the rider has the basic riding skills down, practicing effectively, and learning how to work the herd. The material is presented in "executive summary" fashion with the outset of each chapter telling the reader what that chapter will say. Within each chapter, Barbara and co-author Julie Wells present information using a lot of numbered lists and headings. No reader should fail to understand the book's important points. At times, however, the elegantly simple presentation may not convey enough detail to be useful. For example, when telling the reader "how to get" a horse to have head/neck flexibility, the book assumes the reader knows what to feel for "when the horse gives his nose in response to your request." (People may incorrectly think a horse "gives" when his nose points in the direction of the direct rein pull but the horse is still bracing on the rein, not softening.)
When Barbara presents information on reading cattle and working the herd, she excels. The reader will appreciate how she breaks down each step of a cut and correlates those steps with what the rider should be doing to effectively ride his or her horse. She could have written the whole book on those topics, and the reader would still want more.
The book's quirky format may annoy some readers. (On the even numbered pages are inspirational quotes from cutters or photos/illustrations; the odd numbered pages contain the text.) But the presentation does make for easy reading. Whether the reader is interested in acquiring performance coaching/positive thinking skills, learning how to cut cattle, or both, Barbara shares enough gems to make this a worthwhile read.

Warrior Societies Existed Before Hollywood!.......2007-10-07
Anthony McGinnis' excellent book, COUNTING COUP AND CUTTING HORSES: INTERTRIBAL WARFARE ON THE NORTHERN PLAINS 1738-1889, is worth having if you're the least bit interested in Plains Indians, the History of the American West or the role of technology in history. McGinnis writes well and documents his narrative with endnotes and a very helpful bibliography.
One thing this book accomplished for me was that it raised a curtain on the history of Montana and Great Plains. Although I suspected that things were happening out here before the fur traders, Lewis and Clark and other early pioneers appeared on the scene, it wasn't clear how interesting these events really were.
McGinnis also clarifies the impact of horses, iron (kettles, projectile points), horses, guns, blankets upon the various tribes which still live here, as well as some that don't. The book establishes that a well well-defined pattern of conflict existed long before whites drifted into it. This is not the usual view of the advancing frontier I'd come to expect and I'm grateful to McGinnis for this eye-opening study.
I enjoyed reading it and recommend it highly. It makes a great companion to an older book, CHANGING MILITARY PATTERNS OF THE GREAT PLAINS INDIANS, by Frank Raymond Secoy.
McGinnis' book is becoming more difficult to locate, but it's definitely worth the effort. If you can find one, buy it!
Book Description
LOVING LARRY the true story of a man worth loving, a God worth trusting and an equine sport worth celebrating. Loving Larry is a riveting page-turner that reads like a good novel. Penny Wormet has written an honest, heart-wrenching and ultimately uplifting story of Elaine Hall's struggle to hold her family and life together in the face of her husband Larry's severe bipolar disease and eventual death. Deftly woven through Wormet's narrative is the story of Larry Hall Cutting Horses, home of some of the foremost performance horses in the world. Saddle up for a great ride! ~Sally Harrison, Author/Editor A Tribute to the Lady . . . Expected to fail in a business where men prevail, the grief stricken widow of Larry Hall drew strength from devout, unwavering faith. With profound love, she endured the numbing tragedy of Larry's mental illness. With dauntless determination, effervescent personality and business savvy based on common sense, she carried on the dream that continues to thrive in the cutting horse industry.

Awesome read.......2006-08-02
This book was fantastic from cover to cover, if you are into horses or not there is much to learn from the passion of Elaine Hall and her faith in the Lord along with preseverance, Penny did a beautiful job of introducing each player with enough information to easily remember who played what part in the ups and downs of Larry and Elaine's lives...BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN YEARS.

Life Changing.......2006-07-19
I know nothing about horses but a friend let me borrow this book and it made me look at myself and all the good I have around me. She loved her husband and had such a strong faith in the Lord that her problems seemed to be able to be overcome. It makes you feel better, just reading the book. I could not put it down, I had to keep reading. The author puts so much into the book, it's a must read. I'm waiting for her next one with anticipation.
awesome.......2006-03-15
this book is just awesome the author did a great job with the stats on the horses and events, and the life that the Halls lived,it was so inspiring to read, and the emotions were brought out so realisticly, it was a very hard book to put down untill the very end.

What a totally awesome book!!! .......2005-11-04
I really enjoyed reading it, even though I didn't totally follow all of the horse information, foal history. The story was put together so well, flowed together with thoughts and feelings. After I was done reading the book I felt so much admiration for Elaine to live as she has. What an inspiring woman!! I alternated between chuckles and tears during the book.
Penny is a great author who captured the essence of Elaine, from her great faith, to the love for her family.
Loving Larry.......2005-11-03
Loving Larry is touching story of love with the trials of real life thrown in. It was written in a way that I felt the love and pain through which this family lived. This book shows how the faith of one person can change many lifes - something that we see to little of but all can learn from.
If one book can make you grateful for what you have, restore your faith and appreciate life - this one is it.

A perfect guide for the novice.......2006-06-26
While researching the sport of cutting for my book 'Loving Larry' I read everything I could to capture the essence of the sport. Sally Harrison's guide for the non-pro competitor was my favorite reference. I love the personal stories and photos of the old-time Quarter Horses that were the foundation producers of modern day cutting horses. I appreciate Sally's understanding and careful explanation of the history, terminology and basic rules of cutting. After reading cover-to-cover with awe and fascination and referring back repeatedly for basics, I found this book to be a perfect guide for the novice that I was.
Great history, not great training.......2006-05-24
I really enjoyed her chapters on how the cutting horse came about. They were informative and fun to read. She also does a good job going over the basic rules for non-pro cutting events. I was hoping for more training tips and was disapointed. She hardly even touches on the subject of training your horse to cut.
This book is primarily for someone who is willing to spend lots of $$$$ on a horse and trainer to compete. If this is not you, I suggest trying to get it from a library.
A good overview of the cutting horse world.......1998-03-26
Sally Harrison's book is an excellent overview of the horses, people, and events that make cutting such an intriguing sport. She includes fascinating insights into the lives and histories of some of the immortal horses of the sport, from Poco Bueno to "Little Peppy" (Peppy San Badger), with commentary on what made them so great. The section on Doc Bar and the "two fools," as well as the description of the day Poco Bueno inspired Pine Johnson to adopt the not-quite-classic habit all cutting riders now favour, are in themselves worth the price of the book.
Harrison includes plenty of people in her story as well, from classic trainers like Buster Welch, Pine Johnson and Leon Harrel, to avid non-pros. All of these people give anecdotal explanations of why the sport and the horses have such a hold on them. Letting people like this tell their stories makes for entertaining and often rather moving reading.
There's one odd, and rather amusing, aspect of this book -- when I tried to look up Leon Harrel in the index I couldn't find him. Then I realized that none of the humans quoted or described in the book are listed in the index. You can look up every passing reference to Smart Date or Doc O Lena, but Harrison appears to have left the people out of the index entirely. That alone tells you all you need to know about Harrison's love for horses and cutting.
My only complaint is that I wanted more and yet more details. This book could have been twice as long and I would still have read it in a sitting.

Customer Reviews:
good investment for the beginner.......2007-04-02
I found this book very interesting. I'm new to glass fusing and although it goes into more of the larger type pieces. I found the information quite useful. It contains patterns and step by step instructions on how to do each piece.
The only drawback I found is that most of the photos are in black and white.
Fused Glass Handbook Review.......2007-02-08
Great book with lots of valuable information for the inexperienced glass fuser.
Definitely a good handbook to have.
good for learning the basics.......2005-08-19
excellent and easy to understand. this book is well written and really helps with learning basic fusing/slumping techniques.
Great for beginners and advanced glass fusers.......2005-08-03
A great book with a lot of helpful advice. It's not too technical and easy to understand. I've shared it with my other glass fusing peers and each of us learned something different from it. It's a short book and some of the projects are a little outdated but I did great ideas from seeing them.
Good basic review book.......2001-02-13
If you are just starting out (like you've had a class, get home, and say to yourself "now what do I do"?), this is a really good book to have on hand. It is an older book, true, so some of the kiln options, etc. are a bit dated. But the techniques of finding out if your glass is compatible or the annealing process are still very valid. There's much to be learned from this book, especially if you want the comfort of a good resource on your shelf and available.

A Weekly Log .......2007-09-06
This book is a fun companion or alternative to the classic baby book. I was able to write in silly incidents or the moments leading up to a milestone in the weekly pages. It's good to have a log of sorts for each child so that you can return to it for reference at a later time. I had one of these for my first child, and when my second came, I needed to know what week of age that I did this or that, and I compared size and such. If you're a crafty writer, your children will appreciate reading it when they are older. It has a very technical approach to it, which is a great way to involve dads!
GREAT FOR TECHIES!!!.......2007-08-19
Really fantastically written and hillarious parody of intruction manual for babies.
Got this as a gift from friends but I definetly would buy this myself! Great for first time fathers like myself.
The best present for new parents.......2006-12-13
First the disclaimer - I don't have any kids. However, I have bought this book, as well as its companion, for a few new parents. It might not be the "only baby book you'll ever need" but it's good as a present that's something a little different. New parents get plenty of carriers, onesies, and serious how-to-care-for-your-newborn books. This book is fun to read and still has useful information for the first-time parent. Everyone who I've given this to has loved it and has told me that they continue to refer to it months after they received it.
Not as useful as hoped for........2006-08-15
While this book looked like it would be useful, it fell short of that. Its hard to navigate to the section you want and its not user friendly when it comes to writing in it. Original concept though.
Gag wears thin quickly.......2005-08-03
Comparing baby to a vehicle was funny maybe the first couple of times but then it just got annoying. There's some decent information here but you do have to wade through a whole lot of nothing to get to it.
