Thomas Dixon has written a fantastic book on how Chessie became the representative of the Chesapeake and Ohio RR!! Page after page of gorgeous, color images of Chessie, her 2 kittens (Nip & Tuck) and her husband, Peake!
When America entered WWII, Peake enlisted in the Army. Many endearing and enduring Charles E. Bracker artwork centered around Peake away in the service while Chessie was at home, doing her part for the war effort (she was America's "Sleep Warden")!
The very best of the calendar artwork (Charles E. Bracker was THE artist when it came to the C&O's cats!): Peake Joins The Service, Peake's Favorite Pin-up Girl [Chessie, of course!), Chessie's Hero and Together Again! These vintage pieces inspired Americans at home and on the front - the Terminal Tower in Cleveland, Ohio (HQ of C&O) was flooded with letters addressed to Chessie and to Peake!
This book is a treasure - for railroad fans and cat lovers! I have given copies of this book as gifts!! Highly recommended book for the story of "America's Sleepheart"!!
Somewhat disapointed.......2006-01-16
I bought the book to read to my grand-daughter as I remember reading the book in my childhood, but the book I remember was a story about how Chessie wandered aboard a train and the rest of the book was about how the porters and conductors concealed the little kitty from authorities on the railroad. The book from Amazon was more of a history of the image of the kitten as the mascot of the Chesapeake railroad, which was quite interesting in itself, but not what I had hoped for......

If you like cats, you'll love these patterns. Tons of detailed designs for painting and wood burning, some simple designs for easy embroidery, all of them cute as...well...a kitten! Cats in sleeping poses, cats getting into trouble, cats looking stately, and kittens looking cute, its all here. There's even a few designs for full scenes and picture frames. I bought this book the first time I looked at it and I never regretted it.
Only problem I have is my main interest is embroidery, and the patterns require a bit too much detail work for my taste, but the ones I haven't used, I still love to look at.

I love the explosion of colors that Kaffe uses, both in mosiacs and quilts . This book has a ton of brightly colored mosiac pictures in it...lots of interesting ideas...fairly good instructional pictures but all in all , I didn't like it and returned it . There was only one project (the broken pottery flower pot) that I would have even considered doing and it, too , was just to busy looking for what I was interested in doing. If you love the color explosion that always come with Kaffe projects then this book is for you. If you prefer something a little toned down , or a little structured, then this book is not for you. Hope this helps someone decide!

IF you don't already mosaic, this book will have you searching for a local class. Or hitting the local recycling depot looking for old china or tiles.
I don't yet mosaic but picked it up at the library during an idle moment and just couldn't put it down.
I have always loved Fassett's sense and use of colour, and this book does not disappoint. It certainly will give you lots of ideas and you will probably find yourself daydreaming about mosaic renovations to your house. This book is a visual delight and the instructions seem easy to follow.

I bought the book at the recommendation of a friend and have not been able to keep it in my study. When I tell others of it they ask to borrow my copy.Perhaps I do the author a dis-service by loaning it, but the content is such that I naturally want t to share it.
I loved the book for lots of reasons. It is small enough to carry easily. It is inspiring and sensitively written.The photos personalized it even more.I knew the people more intimatley. I am disappointed that "Turning Fifty" is not readily available at my favorite bookstore. Were that the case, I know that some of the people I have loaned it to would have bought it On the other hand, it can be read in a couple of hours, so it can be easily passed on to friends. The problem with that is that after reading it the firsttime through,the reader wants to return to his/her favorite individuals represented in the book.
