Book Description
Everything old is new again, and this collection of vintage sock patterns mines Weldon's Practical Needlework, a compilation of newsletters published more than 100 years ago, for some of the best. Twenty-four classic patterns are updated here for modern knitters with the inclusion of gauges, contemporary yarns, modern methods, and modern sizes. Filled with fascinating household and historic tidbits from the era, along with little-known tips such as an unconventional way to shape a heel, this historical and gracefully written book evokes a more genteel time while presenting a bevy of colorful socks not seen for nearly a hundred years. After an introduction to a few techniques from the original Weldon's, the patterns begin with an 1887 pair of Gentleman's Shooting Stockings with Fluted Pattern and end with a pair of Ladies' Silk Stockings with Clocks from 1914. Intended for knitters of all levels, this walk down memory lane revives some very classic patterns that may have been gone but are not forgotten.

Disappointing.......2007-07-24
This would be a good book for someone who is interested in the history of fashion or pattern-making, but as a pattern book it fails.
There is no adjusting for individual sizes, just a one-size-fits-somebody-but-not-you. Instead, it suggests that sizes be adjusted by using bulkier or thinner yarn. Am I to make socks out of super-bulky yarn to get my size? I don't think so.
If you are knitter interested in proper fit, don't bother.
praise from a recent sock convert.......2007-03-24
Although I have knitted for many years, I had always been uninterested in socks. Published patterns looked too much like artifacts from ancient bog burials, or else like something worn with knickers for golfing. Recently, under duress, I made my first pair. Ah, the joy of a well-turned heel, the ecstasy of a perfectly mitered toe! Nancy Bushes' new volume give the best researched and condensed discussion of heel and toe technology that I have found. Based on the Weldon's volumes, she has beautifully adapted historic patterns to accomodate modern materials and knitting conventions. A book for the serious knitter
Fabulous, once I paid attention............2007-02-05
I am a casual book flipper and when I first saw this book, I picked it up, said to myself: "too many infant, kid and men's socks" and didn't buy it. However, when I saw it again and had more time, I realized that the headers for each sock designate the original pattern, not the re-worked one. There are plenty of adult sized patterns here to make gorgeous, sophisticated socks. For one sock pattern I craved that was an infant one, I easily adapted it for a woman's size.
I've made 5 pairs of socks from this book and I think they are the finest patterns I've used. Excellent discussion and instruction on a variety of heels and toes. Not only one of the best sock books I own but one of the best knitting books I own.
Fun to read.......2007-01-12
I like this book. I am just starting to knit socks and have not yet mastered turning the heel, but this book appears to have lots of different skill levels including tube socks. (I will be better able to discuss the patterns once I get up the courage to turn a heel.) I really like the history that is given for the different socks and of knitting. The photos are good also.
Good sock patterns............2007-01-10
This book was very enlightening. I loved reading about the history of socks and how little making them has changed over the years. I gave 4 stars only because I thought there were too many patterns for men. I realize that one can change that over to make them for women, but I'm not that advanced in the sock world as yet. Otherwise the book is really good. Good instructions, easy to follow.
Book Description
In The Secret Techniques of Bonsai, the author of the groundbreaking Bonsai with American Trees teams up with his son to offer not only the basics of creating perfect bonsai, but also secret techniques they've developed over years of careful work and observation. For example, readers will learn such tricks as: - Making a cutting for a new bonsai in winter, while the plant still stores its winter nutrients, then wrapping and freezing the cutting until sprint, at which time it can be planted and will thrive; - Trimming branches in such as way as to eliminate swelling and scars; - The proper use of tools to perfect bonsai work; - And much, much more. The Kawasumis provide detailed, easy-to-follow information about growing bonsai from seedlings or beginner plants; expert advice on shaping, pruning, training, grafting and repotting the trees; and new techniques for using tools. And although the Kawasumi family is world-renowned for their bonsai tool design, their instructions allow gardeners to improvise with other readily-accessible bonsai, gardening or even simple workshop tools. Step-by-step photographs accompany the text. Masakumi Kawasumi III, the first qualified tree doctor for bonsai in Japan, contributes his unique insights to make this an invaluable resource for beginners and experiences enthusiasts alike.

Hai!
The Bonsai Bible(s)!!!.......2004-04-08
If you want the mystery taken out of Bonsai; YOU NEED THESE BOOKS!! Both of his books are known worldwide as the "Bible" for Bonsai. Just to let you know that NOT ALL HIS BOOKS ARE SIGNED!!!
A lot are though. I have two sets myself; one signed, and one not signed. I read and reference out of the ones not signed. I have been creating and selling Bonsai for 8 years, and this book still blows my mind when I read it EVERY WINTER and reference it several times a month!! Great stuff!!!
The book is excelent........2002-10-11
Buyer beware. I would just like to point out that the prices are way out of the ball park. I purchased the same book for half price from an online bonsai store.....
I've seen on here that that promote the book as collectable because he signed the book. He signed every book. Don't fall for it.
BONSAI TECHNIQUE 2.......2000-12-04
This is the second of two great books by John Y. Naka. This book breaks the tree down, and goes into greater detail about each section of the tree. Then it gets into pots and how to display your bonsai. Both these books are worth the price, and if your into bonsai you need both his book.
A must have for every bonsai enthusiast........1997-08-16
A must have. This book along with Bonsai techniques I by John Yoshio Naka is one that will always be reference by the beginner or advance Bonsai enthusiast

Good reference book.......2007-09-02
I bought this for my stepdaughter who is planning to go to school for medical billing. I did find some interesting information.
Organized Well for Quick Reviews.......2007-08-24
After reading my text book, this book is very helpful at reinforcing and clarifying everything. This book is easy to follow and she puts items you should memorize into tables and charts. She lays out what you should probably be taking note of for the test.
Refreshing and enjoyable!.......2007-07-18
Thing is, I haven't read or studied anything about this subject since high school. Now that I read quite a few on different subjects I needed badly a brush up on anatomy and physiology and that was exactly what I found in this easy guide. I was able to refresh concepts and learn some others, although you can't remember every name or specific detail, but the book is always handy in case of need. It's startling to realize how complex are human beings, particularly at the level of cell interactions such as metabolism and the immune system, that makes you wonder on life itself. Human body also fail and this book dedicate a space to explain the common diseases of each system and provide some tips to stay healthy. Great overview.
Great for review of important concepts.......2007-05-29
This book helped me focus on important concepts of A&P before my final exam. It broke down into understandable bites whole body systems and left behind information not going to be tested from my massave textboook. It really helped me improve my final exam grade.
Pretty basic stuff.......2007-03-09
A&P for Dummies is a good starter book for people taking A&P I. The material is very basic but has some good information and tips for remembering different aspects of a given system. I would recommend this book if you don't know your AHEM... from your elbow. Also, if you haven't used your A&P for a while and you just need to brush up on the different systems, then it's okay for that too. So, go for it if you are still wet behind the ears or a little long in the tooth so to speak.

Customer Reviews:
Great information, great sedative.......2007-05-06
This book is filled with lots of wonderful information for starting your first saltwater aquarium. However, it reads like a dictionary. It's simply need-to-know information without much rhythm. I found myself actually nodding off while trying to read this book at 5 p.m. More pictures would probably have helped keep my interest, but I can't say for sure. Otherwise, Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies had useful information that I was able to apply to my aquarium hobby.
Save Your Money.......2007-04-08
This book makes saltwater aquariums seem easier than they actually are. For one, I don't even think the book mentions the use of reverse osmosis or deionized water, which is strongly recommended by all marine aquarists. The author also doesn't mention the importance of live rock. In fact, he goes as far to advise against using live rock for fish-only tanks! Sure, you might be able to get away with not using live rock, but it won't be worth it in the long run. Also, I don't agree with the list of recommended filter combinations. One more thing, the book lists an air stone as essential equipment, but the only thing an air stone will do is aid evaporation and cause salt creep! If you have enough movement of water at the surface, you should get sufficient gas exchange. There is, however, one thing the book does get right: its strong recommendation of using a protein skimmer.
This book is easy to understand, but you won't be getting the best information.
Good Starter Book, But Incomplete.......2007-03-09
This new edition of Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies has been brought much more up-to-date with current marine aquarium techniques and is one of the most recently published books I could find on the subject. That said, it's still not a great book on the subject. It becomes overly repetitive in some areas and lacking in others and is often poorly organized. For instance, even basic species information is divided between multiple chapters with each one incomplete on its own and constantly referencing you back-and-forth. Too much time is spent on filtration techniques which the book itself deems are generally inadequate while leaving the reader confused between other techniques [and glances over or completely neglects advanced techniques used for reef aquariums]. The book is clearly aimed at the beginner, but fails to provide adequate direction for moving forward from there.
Good Book.......2007-03-08
This is a great book for those who don't know how to keep a saltwater aqarium.
saltwater aquariums for dummies [its true value] .......2006-11-10
this book is actually quite helpful in getting you familiar with
all the essential jargon encountered in this hobby. it is done in
a non intimidating manner. as for those that criticize the book
for recommending undergravel filters, it doesn't, it states it can be
done, but its old technology. buy this book, WITH!,a comprehensive
salt water aquarium book. after reading both you are ready to play.
more in depth books gave too much info too fast. i took off star
because photos are in black and white.

Customer Reviews:
Thanks for my gorgeous baby........2005-10-31
The book covers fertility options in great depth and if it only suits dummies I am not sure what that says about the many experts out there who couldn't seem to solve my problem. It gave me questions and answers that the experts couldn't and after 8 years trying and many $ spent and with my biological clock about to expire - this gave me what I needed to ask the right questions, get the right tests and surgery done, and finally fall pregnant ! You've nothing to lose by reading it and checking if there is anything you might have missed elsewhere.
A Very Good IVF Resource.......2005-02-15
My Husband & I were getting ready to be thrown into the IVF arena. I had been looking for a resource book to help us through this daunting process but just couldn't find the right one. I went to the book store every weekend and kept picking up the same old ones trying to convince myself that "it would do" but the information just didn't seem to go into depth on the massive (expensive) subject I needed them too. Then came cycle day 1 and I called my doctor only to find out the IVF lab was closing in the next 2 months due to construction at the hospital where it is housed - we got thrown into IVF much quicker than anticipated. We went into the doctors office and got the specs on our individualized plan and the injection lessons but still came out feeling completely overwhelmed. I went back to the bookstore to pick up one of the other books I had been looking at just to calm down a little bit when I found this one. I have found it to be a very good resource if you are getting ready to go through IVF. I felt a lot more informed about the process which helped my anxiety to subside and believe me, going into this more worked up than you have to be is not a good idea :) The authors did a great job explaining the IVF process. The only areas I wish they had gone into more detail is on injectibles and labwork. They do touch on these subjects, I just wish they had gone into even more detail. But overall a very good resouce for IVF. Thank you ladies from a grateful (hopefully successful) IVF patient.
More of the same...........2004-04-12
If you have read any other books on infertility, don't bother with this one. It truly is for dummies, in that there is really no helpful new approach or information. It is more of a reproductive dictionary.
My new fertility dictionary!.......2003-06-16
This is my new fertility dictionary! I can look up all the technical stuff that I need to know while trying to conceive (ttc). It has given me a 'game plan' for what I need to do next. I have used this book to figure out the RIGHT questions before my doctor's visits and understand all that he said afterwards. I also really appreciate the personal stories. I have gotten down and out (even though I've only been trying to have a baby for six months) and worried about what it will take to get pregnant and hearing about other people the same as me has been kind of comforting. I have read some of the stories and suggestions about relationships to my husband as well. He and I have been at each other's throats during this process and at least it has given us some things to laugh about as well.
More so than any fertility book I have read so far, this book combines all the technical information with the emotional side as well.
A must have for anyone TTC.......2003-05-24
Having just hit the 2 year mark in trying to conceive this book is long overdue. One of the authors is an IVF nurse and the other is a 3 year infertility success story. They cover everything from starting out naturally through the whole IVF experience. They captured so many of my feelings and experiences, from being the human pin-cushion with endless dr appts to dealing with those difficult baby showers. It also has a great Cheat Sheat that covers common terms used on all the fertility message boards, the 5 most important tests, and normal blood test results during a cycle. It is filled with personal stories and I came away from it knowing once again that I'm not alone. I'm thinking about getting it for all of my friends and family members who have shared my experience so they can have a better idea of what it is all about. My last two years encapsulated in a Dummies book. Thank you Jackie and Sharon for taking the time to write such a comprehensive and important book.
