Book Description
While dogs get more credit, cats have perennially proven themselves to be every bit the equal of their canine brethren as humankind's best friend. Angel Cats, inspired by a contest authors Allen and Linda Anderson ran to find the "Best Angel Cat" story, shows the often extraordinary ways in which these fascinating creatures have responded to human need. Stories feature Paprika, the kitten that may have saved a little Hungarian girl from Russian soldiers; the cat who helped a woman make friends in a hostile workplace; the cats who acted as "pacemakers" for a sleeping woman with undiagnosed heart problems; and many more. Interwoven with the stories are brief meditations as well as fun facts about cats, such as that cats purr at the same frequency that increases bone density and strengthens and heals fractures. An "Ask Cuddles" section answers frequently asked questions about the fabulous feline.

Angel Cats: Divine Messengers of Comfort.......2007-04-11
what a heart warming book with great stories in it.
A True Blessing.......2006-11-17
A friend gave me this book a week ago today. My wonderful cat (my companion of nearly 14 years), Trouble, died last week of kidney failure and my friend thought I could use a little comfort. I haven't read the entire book yet, but the last section on how animals say good-bye to us was truly touching to me and helped me to see that I'm not crazy for feeling so blue. Reading sections of this book allowed me to see that Trouble's desire to be held that last night he was with me was his way of saying good-bye and trying to let me know that he knew it was time and that he (and I) would be ok.
Angel Cats: Divine Messengers of Comfort.......2006-09-06
This book has some great stories which are heart warming and meaningful for the soul. These stories are way for people to see that animals can truly love there human. I would give this book out for gift to people who are lonely and think that nobody can love them.
COMFORT FOR THE CAT LOVER'S SOUL.......2006-08-14
In these uncertain and harrowing times, those of us who share life with cats have the advantage of being able to reach out and touch softness, comfort, unconditional love and loyalty whenever we stroke our cats. ANGEL CATS: DIVINE MESSENGERS OF COMFORT by Allen Anderson is a prosaic comforter and provides much-needed balm for the soul by illuminating stories of cats' singular love for their chosen humans, each other, and other living beings. I heartily recommend this book for all cat lovers, most especially those who wish to understand their relationships to their cats on a spiritual level, and for all who look forward to meeting beloved feline family members "at the Rainbow Bridge" and beyond.
Angel Cats: Devine Messengers Of Comfort.......2005-09-13
I highly reccommend this book to animal lovers, and especially cat lovers. We are not in this world alone. God has blessed us with cats who can teach us patience, humor, compassion and unconditional love if you will let them. My cats have always been a comfort to me and a reflection of the eternal.

Technicolor Feline Wisdom.......2005-09-30
"We've written these cards to guide you, our human companions, in the way of feline wisdom. We know that it's not always easy being human, and we're happy to share our insights with you. We suggest that anytime you feel that you need inspiration, you just curl up in your favorite chair...and pull out one of our cards." - The feline authors
Cat Comfort Cards is a 50-card deck that is absolutely saturated with color. I've reviewed dozens of decks and this one is by far the most colorful! Magenta, fuchsia, chartreuse, lemon yellow, electric orange, violet, cobalt-you get the picture.
It's a straightforward deck, without any guidebook. What you get are 50 vibrant, whimsical cards that feature a feline-related saying one side and some advice on the other. Some examples include:
Technocat - Learn a new skill. It will open up many possibilities.
Bureaucat - Get that paperwork done. You'll feel better.
Scaredy Cat - Face your fears. They will disappear when you confront them.
Cat's Eye - Open that inner eye. You'll see what's really happening.
Angel Cat - Know that you're loved and protected.
Catharsis - Enjoy the freedom that comes with release.
Catacomb - Look deep inside. Take time to meditate or journey within.
As with most decks published by Hay House, Cat Comfort Cards are of sturdy stock with a glossy finish. Fanciful images, bright colors, and a playful font grace each card-both front and back.
These cards are major eye candy. I enjoyed going through each one, soaking in the amazing colors. Some of the cards were downright funny. One of my favorites is Cata-holic, which depicts a passed out cat surrounded by milk cartons. The message is "Curb your excesses. Everything in moderation."
Cat lovers will go wild over this unique deck. But even if you're not overly thrilled with cats, the original artwork and vivid colors will likely pull you in. Although Cat Comfort Cards are not touted to be an oracle, I can certainly see this deck easily filling that role.

Book Description
Often revered, sometimes feared, cats have been companions to us for over 5000 years. As the old saying goes: Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods and they have never forgotten this. Cats are very discriminating in their relationships with us. Much is made of the unconditional offering of love and affection from a dog. By contrast, cats are very conditional, demanding, self-centered. Cats spend a lot of time keeping their options open and making us oblige, but can give comfort like no other. The Comfort of Cats explores the bond between Kitty, a creatively named Siamese cat, and the woman who lives with her, Pamela Wallin (notice we dared not say owner). Kitty has been at Pamela's side through many of the traumas that life offers up-divorce, being fired and battling cancer-and countless other emotional crises that punctuate a life story. Someone once said, in order to keep a true perspective on one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him. In fact, the words of Albert Schweitzer more accurately reflect the sentiment of this book: 'There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.' Through the words and experiences of cat lover Pamela Wallin and through the eyes of award winning photographer, Anne Bayin, witness the strange beauty, history, elegance and humour of our feline friends. Anne Bayin is a Toronto based writer and photographer, who has exhibited internationally. In a former incarnation, she was senior producer of the television program Pamela Wallin Live. She is allergic to cats.

The joys of companionship with a cat.......2007-07-04
Most owners of cats already realize this, but there is something unique about the bond between cat and human. To those outside a relationship like this, cats appear to be fussy, stuck up creatures that veiw humans as scrapers of the cat pan and the opener of cans and little else. But those of us who have let cats into our lives know better. They are our quiet companions, elegant creatures with big knowing eyes and soft paws that come and are quite happy to be share our time with us. Some are a bit aloof, while others are clearly affectionate.
Pamela Wellin's book looks at the companionship that cats bring to us, and how they have given that love and affection to their humans in the past and the present. The author in particular talks about the mental and psychological comfort that her Siamese cat brought to her during difficult times of illness and separation. It was this aspect that especially appealed to me -- during my cancer treatment, I had a Siamese cat, Bushiko, who was my inseparable companion during those unpleasant days. She would nestle beside me, purring quietly, always within hand's reach, and never thought that anything that I said was too unpleasant to listen to. When I wept in pain, she would purr more loudly, and gently kneed my arm or leg. When I had recovered, I discovered that Bushi was quite ill herself, and was warned by the vet that she had not much more time left. It was as though she was waiting to see that I was going to be alright.
So, yes, there was going to be a rather strong sentimental reason for me to like this book from the start. Wallin uses stories and quotes from around the world about cats and those who love them. There are quite a few pieces of poetry, folklore, stories from Mark Twain -- himself no slouch when it came to having cats around -- and other bits of lore. One section delves into the odd link between writers and cats, and also between readers and cats, in that both species love quiet and stillness. There is an amusing story and letter from Florence Nightengale and her cats, and a tidbit that when she passed away of extreme old age her will made provision for her cats' well-being. Another section goes into how we name our cats.
Finally, and what sold the book to me, were the wealth of photographs in simple black and white of the writer's own Siamese cat. For obvious reasons, I am particularly attached to that breed of cat, and reading this small book brought back to me many pleasant memories and a sense of wellbeing and calm. While this isn't a very deep book in terms of learning new things about cats, it does satisfy on an emotional level.
It's a rather small book, more of what I would call a gift size book, and comes in at under 150 pages. The design is lovely, the photographs numerous and very pleasing. I was able to find my copy at Daedalus books at the cost of less than 3$US, and I consider the money well spent. It's a perfect book for any cat lover with a literary bent. Four stars overall.
Recommended.

Quilters learn how to recreate the motion and texture of the author's popular namesake stitch as they follow along with this fully illustrated handbook and DVD. Inspired by the art nouveau movement's Alfonse Mucha, this freehand, background filler quilting design has electrified the quilting community. Dubbed "McTavishing," after its creator, it has become the most popular new design concept in quilting today. As shown in the 25 illustrated projects, McTavishing may be added to any quilt or garment, from wholecloth to contemporary art quilts, and done by hand, domestic machine, or longarm technique. The book's seven how-to chapters demonstrate the uses of the McTavishing stitch—as an addition to an open quilt block, in a border, to highlight complex applique, custom tailor a favorite garment, or as part of a larger overall design—while the accompanying DVD provides lessons from the author. Accompanied by interviews with accomplished hand and domestic machine quilters, this guide offers readers an unparalleled view of the exciting new quilting process.

Inspirational.......2007-09-18
I found this book truly inspirational. Even though I only use a domestic machine, I can't wait to 'play' with this method. It has fuelled my ambition even further to one day own a long-arm quilting machine. Have yet to kick off the kids long enough to watch the dvd, but am looking forward to doing that shortly. The illustrations and explanations made it easy to imagine what can be produced, and the photographs of the quilts took my breath away.

Really enjoyed this book! Because it also comes with a DVD---you can see actual examples and how they are done --- making the technique easier to duplicate. I wish other authors of techniques would think about doing the same thing!

Everything changes when a woman becomes a mother, but society--particularly women themselves--often colludes to deny this simple truism. In The Mask of Motherhood, author Susan Maushart (a nationally syndicated columnist in Australia and the mother of three children) explores the effect childbearing has upon women. In the process, she removes the veils of serenity and satisfaction to reveal what she holds to be the truth: the early years of motherhood are physically difficult and can be emotionally devastating. New mothers increasingly enter full-scale identity crises, few women have sufficient information about child-rearing realities, and, as Maushart writes, "the realities of parenthood and especially motherhood are kept carefully shrouded in silence, misinformation, and outright lies." The book comprises seven essay-style chapters. In "Falling: The Experience of Pregnancy," Maushart discusses wrongful notions about morning sickness, the mixed messages about pregnancy weight gain, and the "mask" of stoicism pregnant women feel compelled to wear. In "Laboring Under Delusions," Maushart exposes the changes 30 years have brought in childbirth, and the contemporary woman's need for self-control in all things, including birth. In "Superwoman and Stuporman," Maushart disabuses readers of the myth of what she calls, "pseudo-egalitarian family life." The Mask of Motherhood is extensively researched, convincing, and deeply insightful. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
Becoming a mother is filled with the extremes of emotion--the highest highs and the lowest lows. But women are often reluctant to talk honestly about the experience for fear they'll be seen as bad mothers. With wit and candor, The Mask of Motherhood takes on the myths and the misinformation, helping women to prepare and deal with the depth of feeling that comes with the experience and perhaps most important, letting them know that many, if not most, new mothers are feeling the same way.
Susan Maushart, social critic and mother of three, explores how motherhood affects our marriages and friendships, our relationships with parents, our sex lives, and self-esteem. Becoming a mother is a momentous occasion, so why do we maintain such a conspiracy of silence about it? In The Mask of Motherhood, mothers will find the comfort and reassurance they are looking for, and confirmation that, indeed, motherhood is the toughest job in the world, but can also be the most rewarding.
"Maushart writes engagingly and persuasively about the fact that...today's mothers feel more pressure than ever to defend their choices by donning a happy face." --People Magazine
Customer Reviews:
A good look into reality.......2007-10-03
What you get is a sober view at motherhood. Pay attention of the role of the father. No women in the study says "oh and at that moment my husband did that..." motherhood looks like a very lonely journey you board on.
Eye Opening.......2007-07-26
Before I got my hands on this book the only things I had heard about motherhood were tales that might as well have come straight from the glossy pages of a parenting magazine. Motherhood seemed to be this glorious, rewarding and very satisfying experience. Not once did I hear anything more negative than "Raising Kids is not that easy".
In this very well researched book, however, motherhood is presented in a different light. The author talks about all the challenges new mothers have to face and why experienced mothers never really share these things with Non-Mothers.
I'm really thankful for this book because it gave me a better insight into what motherhood is really like and made me realize that I still need a few years before I will be ready to face this challenge.
My Favorite "Mother" Book.......2007-07-02
When you first become a mother and realize all "motherhood" entails, it can be a bit frightening. This book will be your savior. It includes the thoughts you may be thinking but are afraid to say out loud. It will open your eyes to the issues so many new mothers face with honesty. It will enable you to make the changes that you may deem necessary to take off your "mask". Most of all, you will be secure in the knowledge that you are NOT alone.
Claudine Wolk, Author "It Gets Easier I Promise and Other Lies We Tell New Mothers"
good read, worth the time, warns you of the impending perils of motherhood.......2007-06-03
With everything about motherhood written in a glowing review of the changes it brings to one's life, this honest book was refreshing. It's not overwhelmingly depressing-- it just tells the truth about changes you can expect in your life as a new mom. It seems to me that it's always good to enter a new endeavor with as much information as possible-- and this book certainly helps fill in gaps.
Honesty for mothers, at last!.......2007-03-09
After having my first child I remember feeling so unprepared, scared, alone and sad. When I reached out to other mothers for support, the majority of them acted as though the way I felt was unusual and strange. I felt like I must be the most terrible, unloving mother in the world. After that I retreated back into my shell and continued to spiral downward (it didn't help that I had a colicky, high-needs baby). A year or so later, a friend recommended this book to me. By that time I had pretty much figured out that all mothers wear a "mask" but I sure as heck wasn't going to let any woman I cared about find out the way I had: months of isolation and self-loathing. Now whenever one of my female friends or family has a child, I buy a gift for the baby, and this book for the mother. I only wish someone had given it to me after I had my firstborn so I would have known that this wasn't an obstacle that I was facing alone.
