I think that if you want to get a rabbit, you should read this book because it tells you about rabbits so you know how many responsibilities there are in taking care of rabbits. The other books about pets are also very helpful.

3 out of 5 stars If You Want The Book With The Least Detail, This Is It........2005-07-29

This book is thin with lots of colorful pictures of mice, some of the things you need and can have when you own a mouse and a few pictures of the subject they're talking about at the time. Example: How to figure out what gender your mouse is.
It also includes a VERY nice couple of pages that show you a picture of a healthy mouse and has arrows pointing at the signs of a healthy mouse like clear eyes and shiny fur.
It's not a complete guide to owning a mouse, but it's short and to the point. It's a good guide to get for people that don't like to read more than 30 pages.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't tell you how to keep the stink down........2001-01-17

Very colorful and informative book with great photography. Manages to pack a good deal of information into such a small space. Needs some more practical advice. Instead of "wood shavings," for bedding, it'd be nice if the author pointed out that pine shavings help keep the odor down. Also, neglects systems of raising mice in large quantities. This would be good for reptile keepers who raise feeders.

Too little informaton. Does not discuss any type of information on guinea pig diseass, how to bath your pig, or buying the perfect cage. A quick read, not worth the price I paid for it.

3 out of 5 stars Too brief..........2000-07-28

Those of you who want to learn about guinea pigs and how to care for them in detail, I'm afraid that this book is not suitable for you. The contents are too brief. Despite that, the pictures are very clear (and there are lots of them!) I feel that this book will be perfect for young children who are learning to care for their cavies as the language is simple to understand.

3 out of 5 stars Good beginner's book, but don't rely on it only........2000-02-08

I own one dozen books on rat care, some current, some vintage (ie, printed before 1980). I've read the books by Ducommon, Mays, Fox, Cardinal, Himsel, and Bulla. This book differs from them in that it is intended for the younger rat person, of about 8 or so. It scans the basics of rat care in simple, easy words, copiously illustrated, and with little sidebar snippets of info. It glances briefly at handling your new rat, what to feed him, what sort of home to provide, and how to recognize common health problems in rats, such as ring tail. I've only discovered one outright error in the text, which is a snippet, so it may not be Mr. Viner's words (though the editor should have caught it). On page 7, the norway rat and the roof rat (rattus rattus aka black rat) are confused. This is hardly earth shattering, and the pet care info seems accurate enough.I disagree with the blanket statement that the aquarium home is better than the cage home; both forms have drawbacks and advantages.

I would give this book to a little boy or girl who just got his/her first rat(s). It will inform them of what they need to do and how to do it,and add to the selfconfidence they need in dealing with a new pet. Mom and dad should have a copy of the Ducommon book handy, when more detailed info is needed.

While not the book I would choose for an adult gerbil-keeper, it would be great for kids who want to get their first gerbils. The info is very basic and the pictures are cute. There are some care tips that I wouldn't follow (like cleaning the bedding only every 3-4 months) but as a whole it's a quality book for children who want to learn more about gerbils.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2007-09-03

This book is a joy. Simply a joy, as are the writers who I had the pleasure of meeting at my local knit shop. They are regular, albeit extremely creative, women who became addicted to knitting. As a fellow addict, I understand. Their book is witty, funny, endearing and full of great projects that are 'doable' even for a beginner and that can be adapted to your needs. For example, I am working on the log cabin blanket in my husband's football team colors! What fun, how easy and how beautiful (although an awful lot of knitting!). I have a library of knitting books and subscribe to almost all the knitting magazines. Some are great, some are not. This one is great. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Knitting Books I Own.......2007-08-28

And I own a lot! The layout is great, the patterns varied, unique, and well written. I've owned this book over a year but still open it at least once a week for inspiration and eye candy. If for some reason I lost it, I'd buy it again right away. It's that good.

      4 out of 5 stars Errata.......2007-08-26

Good but be sure to check the publisher's web site for corrections to patterns. Seems there's always some corrections in knitting books. I always check for them before I purchase a book so I don't attempt a pattern with mistakes. This isn't foolproof but it does help.

      3 out of 5 stars Its popular.......2007-08-11

This seems to be a very popular book. It's a quality book and has some good projects but I'm not as excited over it like a lot of others seem to be. It's nice but not on my "best ever" or "favorites" lists of knitting books.

      5 out of 5 stars Can't put it away!.......2007-07-30

I love this knitting book. There are so many projects to do that are useful and go beyond the scarf, shawl, afghan, sweater norm. Knitted piano bench cushions? Who knew?

1 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only.......2001-06-02

This is a great book for the beginning gardener, but does not provide much information or inspiration for anyone who already knows the basics.

      5 out of 5 stars A must buy.......2001-03-30

Green Places in Small Places fills a void left by so many other gardening books. You've got a small place. It may be sunny, it may be dark. It may have soil it may have cement. It may even have people walking over it.But Kerwin Fischer will tell you how to make it a "green place." Green, pink, even blue.

Often using examples of a garden he voluntarily cared for in Manhattan, Mr.Fischer takes you from evaluating your space (chapter 1) through how to tend for your small green place through the seasons (Chapters 8-17).

The book is a welcome change from the many books that are often too "flowery" and abstract to help you get started. But the book does a good job of avoiding technical language (although it does provide a useful explanation of technical terms.)

      Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars A No-Bull Garden Book.......2001-03-13

This good is a clear step-by-step blueprint for creating a garden virtually anywhere. The author has a dry, ascerbic wit and is a great debunker of misconceptions about plants, as well as a bit of a plant historian. It's a really good read, as well as a really good manual.

2 out of 5 stars Gardening, Not Design.......2001-01-25

Although a good book on planting a small garden this book is not, as I thought by its title, a book on designing small gardens. There are only two fairly complete gardens shown amidst the many beautiful pictures of plants. The book deals almost exclusivly with the planting and growing of flowers, primarily perennials, bulbs, has a chapter on houseplants and treats the subject of soil amendments, fertilizers and such. If you need to know what plants to use in your small garden, this book will help.

5 out of 5 stars This is the most entertaining gardening book ever written........1999-09-15

This book makes me believe I can do anything in the garden. It's rare to pick up a "how-to" book that draws you in and and sounds personal. Green Places in Small Spaces is the antithesis of text book-type writing. This book is great, especially for a first time gardener, and one that doesn't have a lot of time or money to spend on gardening.

I liked the fact that the author spoke to me in the first person, gave good, solid advice backed up with anecdotes, and took me through the seasons. This author is also quite opinionated - - and it made the book a good read. This is the most useful and entertaining gardening book ever written, filled with great advice.

2 out of 5 stars Planting Wetlands & Dams: The Way I See It!.......2000-02-23

The author specializes in Australian waters and plants. The book was way to small to include all that is need to cover this topic. Further, it is over priced for its size. With that said, the book does offer a good overview into the topic of the creation and enhancement; however little! Some of the diagrams are good (not great) but the color pictures in the center of the book adds greatly to its attractiveness and does provide examples. This is more of a discussion than a guide. It does cover good topics and it would add to supplement anyones library of other such books with more detailed information. A good plant list is included; however, wetland work in America requires using plants based on reference wetlands species. If you have money to spend, buy it. If you are on a budget, pass and get a different book.

5 out of 5 stars No cancer patient should be without this book.......2007-07-17

I so far have taken one piece of advice from this book and it has improved my quality of life so much that I can't wait to try more.

I am undergoing some really rough chemo treatments. Round 1 chemo left me achy and pretty much in bed for most of a week. My doctor told me there was nothing they could do for the fatigue. I looked at Dr. Blaylock's book and he recommended a supplement called Propax with NT Factor. I started taking it (with my doctor's permission) a few days before round 2 Chemo and the improvement is remarkable.

Dr. Blaylock also gives a lot of advice for any number of chemo side effects as well as ways of fighting cancer with nutrition. My advice is to buy this book - it is well worth it's price.

                5 out of 5 stars Life.......2007-05-31

I purchased this for a friend of mine who needed some guidance. Together we found this book to be not only inspiring but an excellent source for understanding where life had taken her and how to live.

                2 out of 5 stars Don't drive yourself mad........2006-03-26

I got this book to find ways to support my body during chemotherapy. I came away feeling like I was going to die unless I ate blended salads and goat's milk every day and chased down a bunch a of random supplements. And I'm a very "natural food"-type of person who usually doesn't think much of going the extra mile to seek out complementary or alternative care. I'm not saying there aren't some good tips in the book, but it is really hard to weed through all the advice to find what you need. The author does quote many studies, but many of them only used animals as subjects, not people, so he's not always presenting conclusive evidence. The best thing you can do is rest, eat a well-balanced diet and find ways to support your spirit during this tough time. Stay away from anything that makes you feel fear.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing help for cancer patients! Wow!.......2006-02-21

this book is astonishing in it's clarity and logical (and fairly current c 2003) presentation of many, many practical and simple things to do nutritionally and supplementally to support the cancer patient to help their body fight the cancer. All the author's claims seem to have solid references provided. I have done health research for a few years and this book stands out as probably the best (true and useable) I've ever seen. I'm particularly keen on this subject as my dear mother recently was diagnosed with breast cancer. I'd recommend this book to anyone. It is true,
"eat your broccoli", but also many practical recommendations are made on supplements to take some of them new to me, and info is provided where to get them also. This book is a one-of-a-kind, must read for anyone concerned with overcoming (or avoiding) cancer. Buy the book for your loved one or yourself, as soon as possible. The word I have for this book is astonishing. I marked mine up a lot to underline key things. There's so much there.
Thanks for oppty to post my review. John Shell, Virginia

5 out of 5 stars Great guidance from a cancer doctor.......2004-08-22

Dr. Blaylock has gathered all the information you need to understand the importance of combining natural substances with your cancer treatment. He describes all chemotherapy drugs in great detail.

I was lucky enough to discover this book just as I was leaving home to travel to Fort Worth, Texas. I was going there to help a young man convince his ex-wife that nine different chemo drugs were not going to cure their 7-year old son of his leukemia without supplementation with natural substances. While my wife drove, I read Dr. Blaylock's book. It was as if he were speaking directly to me and the ex-wife. He explained, for example, that none of the drugs being used on Jeffrey had ever been tested together for harmful synergies. None of them had ever been tested on children.

When I gave Dr. Blaylock's book to the ex-wife at the courthouse in Fort Worth, I said a prayer that she would read it. She did. She withdrew her case against her ex-husband and they worked out a natural regimen for Jeffrey. It worked. Within a few weeks, Jeffrey was back to normal after being near death. I atrribute his survival to the information in this book.
