Sparkling Satire.......2003-11-16
Lois Roney's Academic Animals is a droll, satiric and inexhaustibly imaginative reassessment of American academy through the lens of animal fable. Like Orwell, Roney senses the ways in which people's distractions and obsessions can make them resemble animal archetypes. Muscular but humane, her commentary makes for a completely enjoyable read.
Recommended reading for students or educators.......2003-07-18
Academic Animals: A Bestiary Of Higher-Education Teaching And How It Got That Way by medievalist scholar and educator Lois Roney is an informed and informative, fact-based, 277 page fiction which looks at higher-education teaching and likens the personality categories and behavior traits of professors to various animal types. Despite the tongue-in-cheek animal approach, the issues addressed are quite serious, and Academic Animals is recommended reading for students or educators looking for insights on how to best get along with the folks in charge of instruction and grades, as well as non-specialist general readers who enjoy a good novel written with an iconoclastic flair. Academic Animals is also available in paperback (1401002471, [money amount]) and as an eBook (140100248X, [money amount]).
A searing look at life on campus..........2002-10-22
A friend recommended this book, knowing that I was returning to graduate school. It's bizarre, often funny, and sometimes surprisingly touching. Yesterday, I was enduring a too long lecture on Sartre's philosophy of literature when I began to wonder what kind of "animal" my professor might be. Ms. Roney has recorded some of the more strange anecdotes of a life spent in academia; these sketches are a searing look at life on campus. That was my obstacle in finishing the book: At times the humor was too caustic, too scathing for my taste. If you can get past that, though, the stories are wildly imaginitive and entertaining.
Animals are my business!.......2002-10-03
As an Animal Behavioralist and a some times Functional Morphologist, I found this author does quite a good job of choosing an animal and describing the human academic's behavioral and physical counterpart. When I read about mother and father beaver, I said to myself, every university/college has a pair of these coddling nurturers, either already in place or "in the making" (and beavers are hard to get rid of,once established in an area).
I couldn't decide where GWBush fits in: either an impassive Walrus who is quoted saying " the public has no right to criticize....they don't understand it." or the rooster who teaches most of his class in abstentia as he is on the road lecturing about his new "superfield of knowledge" that he just dreamed up. GW is not mentioned in the book, but I found myself thinking about where to put him. Then again, would GW fit in ANYWHERE in Academia?!
On Target.......2002-06-26
Lois Roney has pegged her Academic Animals correctly. Many years ago, I lived and worked in the world of "higher-education teaching." Her Bestiary is all too accurate. And it doesn't end there. Outside of the fabled "ivy-covered walls" too many have had to deal with the spontaneity of Rooster's students, i.e.done their work for them. And who hasn't picked up professionally for Mule's and Beaver's former students. Thank goodness for the Porcupines and Moose of the academic world. Their intelligence, humanity and ability to challenge their colleagues and students in a positive manner benefit all of us.

Knitting Rules!: The Yarn Harlot's Bag of Knitting Tricks
ASIN: 1596680016 |
Book Description
This favorite knitting guide features new color drawings that illustrate the close-up detail of stitches, gauges, joins, seams, borders, and buttonholes—and new photographs that show off the finished pieces. New tricks and techniques are also introduced, including alternative ways to cast on, bind off, and increase stitches, and up-to-the-minute stylish accents are provided in expanded sections on color knitting techniques and the use of tassels, fringe, and beads. Tips for the best possible results are included throughout, and the handy format of the book (it fits easily into a knitting bag) has been enhanced with a hard cover and a concealed spiral spine that allows the open book to lie flat.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-Have.......2007-07-07
This book is a must-have for me. I carry it with me in my knitting bag and refer to it all the time. I had the earlier version and when I couldn't find it after a couple of days rushed out and bought the new expanded version. The new illustrations are great.
The only reason I've downgraded it to 4 stars is that the Index is woefully inadequate. Finding specific stitches requires flipping through the whole book, it would be so much easier just to turn to the Index.
Wonderfully Useful Tool for Knitters.......2007-06-27
Vicki Square's newest edition is even better than the original version. The updated colored drawings make it even easier to understand the knitting techniques she presents. Its small size and spiral-bound format make it perfect for popping into your knitting bag for carrying a wealth of knowledge with you, without a lot of extra weight. For either a beginner or an expert knitter, Ms. Square's excellent and orderly advice can't be beaten. This is the fourth copy of her book I have purchased, three of them for friends and relatives. Highly recommended, whatever other knitting books you might already have.
A must have - but make sure you have the updated version........2007-06-13
I'm a small LYS owner, and I use this book all the time to help customers, either in answering questions, or as a quick picture reference to a technique, or as a guide to sizes and yarn quantities. But make sure you get the updated and expanded version, as the pictures in the first edition were woefully inadequate compared to the updated version.
The best thing is, it's just the right size to carry in your knitting bag on trips, which is when I tend to try more intense patterns.
A Must in My Knitting Bag.......2007-02-22
This and the Knitting Answer Book are must haves for this knitter. This book has been a mainstay for me since the first printing and when I saw a friend's "expanded and updated," version, I ordered it right away. It was worth getting the newest version . . . but I did have to transfer notes from my old copy to this new one and still found a few things that are not explained that I needed to add. The old copy will be passed on to a knitting friend or family member that doesn't yet own a copy.
If you are looking for a gift for the knitter in your life, this would be a welcome addition to any knitter's library --- and you might just get a hand knit gift out of it in appreciation!
Good content, heavy book.......2007-02-19
Just a quick review. I think the content of this book is great, and I can already tell that it will be my go-to book before I reach for my Vogue Knitting tome. I also like that it's spiral bound. Having said that, it is something that I would ideally like to carry around in my knitting bag and it's quite heavy for its size. It's printed on heavy color paper and the cover is heavy as well, so that is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. Also, even though you can prop it up on its cover so that you can read it, it's printed so that only one page can be read that way; if you turn the book around, the other page is upside down.

Take your knitting to the next level.......2004-08-22
What do you do when you've learned the basic skills of knitting -- casting on & off, knitting, purling -- and are looking to expand your skills and become a better knitter? The answer is simple: buy this book. Lisa Myers, owner of Rosie's Yarn Cellar in Philadelphia, has been in the yarn business for years and is an experienced writer and teacher. She shares her hard-earned knowledge in this book, designed to take novice knitters to the next level (although even experienced knitters can learn a lot and will appreciate the charts and technical info). She gives practical advice for picking yarns, selecting stitch patterns, and incorporating design techniques for a variety of garments: mittens, hats, socks, and so on. There are helpful illustrations and plenty of tables and other information to help you make sense of it all. Don't spend the rest of your life blindly following other people's patterns: become a thinking knitter and make the knitted garments YOU want to make.
Take your knitting to the next level.......2003-10-31
The fall chill is setting in, and Christmas is just around the corner -- so now's the time to curl up in front of the fireplace (or maybe just the TV) with a cup of hot chocolate, a pair of knitting needles, and a big ball of yarn. Knitting, after all, is cool again -- it's not just for old ladies anymore.
Once you've learned the basics, and you've mastered basic, boring scarves (every member of my family and every one of my friends now owns at least one hand-knit scarf), you're ready to go out on a limb a bit. In The Joy of Knitting Companion, Myers, a yarn store owner who's been knitting since she was eight, gives all kinds of insight into the craft. In the pages of this book, you'll find tips on selecting the perfect yarn for a project, basic patterns for hats, socks, scarves, mittens, and bags, and a few refreshers of the basics. You'll also learn how to read charts and make your projects even more personal -- by designing your own patterns.
The Joy of Knitting Companion is chock-full of instructions for new stitches and patterns and suggestions that will even make you excited to knit boring old scarves again. Myers also includes graphs for designing your own patterns and pages for filling in information about various yarns, the projects you've completed, and more.
This book is definitely a must-have for any knitter -- every page is full of information that you'll want to refer to over and over again.
Good for beginners.......2003-05-10
I think that this book might be good for someone just starting to knit. If you have done much knitting, this probably isn't the book for you. I got it because I hope it will be helpful for beginning students. It does give some suggestions and formulas which will be helpful. I would probably recommend checking it out of the library instead of buying it.

Book Description
Japanese gardens are fascinating expressions of landscape art. Their beauty speaks to everyone. What is behind this beauty? Why do the gardens of Japan speak to us so strongly? This volume delves into questions of beauty and ideas of nature expressed in the visual and literary arts of Japan as well as notions of taste and creativity in garden making. It goes beyond the popular understanding of Japanese gardens and locates them in a larger social and cultural context, revealing not only how gardeners conceived their works, but also how gardens functioned during key periods in classical, medieval, and early modern Japanese history.
Revised and thoroughly updated, Themes in the History of Japanese Garden Art presents new, thought-provoking interpretations of the evolution of Japanese garden art. Its depth and much-needed emphasis on a practical context for garden creation will appeal to art and literary historians as well as scholars, students, and appreciators of garden and landscape art, Asian and Western.
