3 out of 5 stars Updated from the orignal, but not up to date.......2002-02-15

I purchased the 1963 edition of this book and it was my inspiration and wishbook for 10 years until I finally did have a horse of my own. I still have the original, but it is in sad shape from many readings over the years. I decided to purchase the 1990 edition out of curiousity as to what had been updated, and out of nostalgia for my old 'bible'. It is very biased toward the english style of riding (as was the original), but the references to western riding are horribly outdated. This book was published in 1990 and their picture of a well appointed western rider is apparently circa 1970. I ride both English and Western, a phenomenon that is very common today with breeds such as the Quarter Horse that offer both types of classes at shows. Overall, I think it is still a good book for someone who is interested in getting involved with horses for the first time.

3 out of 5 stars Not much practical and useful information.......1998-01-14

I thought that this was probably a terrific book for a young girl dreaming of owning her own horse, but felt that it had very little practical and useful information for the horse owner, especially for an inexperience first-time owner. I have never been able to use it as a reference when I had a problem and find the information I needed.

3 out of 5 stars Civil War Diary Quilt.......2007-08-17

This is a lovely book but not as good as i thought it would be. I have wanted it for over one year and now that I have it, realise I could live without it. The illustrations and overall appeal ie. colour, setout and feel are lacking. Not a really appealing book in my opinion. Overall it is a lack-lustre offering. Some good facts re: real life stories from the Civil War however.

This is a great thick book of blocks that coincide with letters from the Civil War period. A group of us made quilts from this book. ITs a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars History in the making.......2007-07-12

I really enjoyed the stories, just wish that there were more. Good book for quilter's who like to take patterns and recreate them in EQ6 or other software to print out hard copy patterns. You could trace and draw out patterns in the book and do English paper-piecing too.

5 out of 5 stars Civil War History and 6" Quilt Blocks.......2007-07-03

This is an interesting quilt book and history book rolled into one. The blocks pictured are 6 inches square, with a CD of patterns available from the author to help you print or resize them. The diary stories reveal much about the day-to-day life of a diverse group of Civil-War era women. Becoming involved in Rosemary Youngs Yahoo group has added much to my enjoyment of the history portion, and helped me with the actual piecing of the quilt. Her previous book is Amish Circle, and her follow-up book (just published) is Love Letters. 5 out of 5 stars Civil War Diaries.......2007-06-02

If you enjoy history and quilts, this is an excellant book to combine both. Interesting reading and I'm anxious to start the quilt blocks. Pictures of the quilt blocks are very clear but do need to know the basics of quiltmaking to make the blocks as there are no instructions with the blocks.

Quilts are an integral part of the picture of this tumultuous period of American history because they tell the story of the other half who lived through it: the women of the North and the South. Quilts from the Civil War combines intelligently written text and excerpts from diaries and letters with archival photos, engravings, and color photos of period quilts to offer new insight into both the quiltmaking of the time and the lives of the women. In addition to the engrossing historic angle, there are complete instructions for nine quilt projects adapted from original quilts of the era and tips on using reproduction fabrics. These projects--including "Underground Railroad," "Northern Lily and Southern Rose," and "Log Fence"--have a very authentic look to them and allow modern quiltmakers to enter into the spirit of history. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars Quilts from the Civil War: Nine Projects, Historic Notes, Diary Entries.......2007-08-12

This is a well researched documentation of Civil War era quilts and historical accounts of the women who created them.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a quilt book.......2002-11-21

"Quilts from the Civil War" not only contains project for reproducing numerous quilts of the 1850s and 1860s, it also contains an excellent discussion of the role quilts played in people's lives. Barbara Brackman describes quilts made for freedom fairs, by the Sanitary Commission for use by soldiers, and quilts made to express patriotic fervor. Brackman goes beyond a mere discussion of quilts, however, to discuss the development of chemical dyes, women's involvement in the war effort in general, the effect of the blockade on southern textile production, the need to hide quilts from occupying Yankee forces, and even the relationships that developed between quiltmakers and soldiers who received the donated quilt.

Brackman also examines the argument that quilts were used as clues for slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad, and concludes that these tales likely were a myth. (Nevertheless, she includes a Jacob's Ladder-style quilt that honors the Underground Railroad.) In evaluating this theory, she discusses the history of the Log Cabin quilt.

Period photographs of women and children, engravings of Sanitary Fairs and other gatherings, photographs of original and reproduction quilts and original dresses beautifully illustrate this book. Excerpts from journals, letters and newspaper articles and reprints of ads calling for the production of items for soldiers add further interest.

Brackman provides a unique timeline that combines both traditional historic events, such as "March 4, 1864 - Grant becomes Commander-in-Chief of the Union Army" with social or women's history, such as "August 1864 - Ladies Christian Commission of San Francisco sponsors a Grand Fair" and "October 5, 1864 - Mary Jones of Georgia records paying $16 a yard for calico."

Footnotes provide directions for those interested in further research.

One drawback is that the projects contained in the book do not faithfully reproduce the historic quilts. Some are fairly easy to adapt to make more authentic, such as the Underground Railroad quilt, which adds 8-pointed stars to a Four Patch in a Strip pattern. Since the book contains a picture of the original, a quiltmaker can easily see that by leaving off the stars, she can make a quilt that's closer to the original. Other patterns will take a little more ingenuity to adapt, but again, pictures of the originals should help.

Those mostly interested in southern quilts would probably do better with "Southern Quils: Surviving Relics of the Civil War." Brackman concludes that few quilts were produced in the Confederacy due to blockade-caused shortages of fabric, needles, thread and other necessities.

For those interested in trying some of the projects contained in the book, the directions are clear and easy to follow. Brackman provides strip quilting directions for some of the quilts (such as the Underground Railroad) but not for others where this technique could speed production (such as the Log Fence). The appendix contains excellent information on batting, quilting styles, binding and other details to give quilts a more period look.

Overall, despite projects that are more inspired by historic quilts than faithful reproductions, "Quilts from the Civil War" is an excellent source of information about textile production during the 1850s and 1860s.

5 out of 5 stars ..........2001-07-27

In "Quilts From the Civil War" you will find that glimpses of news items, letters, and diary entries blend with facts and myths to tell the story of quilt making surrounding the Civil War. Beginning with abolitionist quilts and ending with commemorative quilts Barbara Brackman tells the story that changed the course of our country. In this comprehensive book even the patterns are provided. You will find complete instructions for Underground Railroad quilts, patriotic quilts, Sanitary Commission quilts and many more. So your fascinating journey just begins with reading the history found in this book. That only prepares you for your personal quest to find reproduction fabrics as you began to plan to make your own period quilt.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for historic quilt lovers.......2000-08-07

I purchased this book over a year ago and since that time I have referred to it repeatedly for ideas on historical fabrics and patterns. The text gives details about quilts and quiltmaking that can not easily be found elsewhere. The author's perspective on the subject is invaluable whether you make quilts, collect them or both. The historical quilts and newer quilts are beautiful. Quilts from the Civil War is my favorite among a collection of several dozen quilt-related titles.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely readable book for qulit lovers everywhere!.......1998-08-02

Not many people could write a book on old quilts as well as Barbara Brackman. After reading Clues In The Calico also, I decided to get Quilt from the Civil War....it was a wonderful choice. Ms Brackman not only brings to life the quilt but also the quilters themselves. The "new" quilts made in the manner of the Civl War era quilts are remarkable. I will be using this book for years to come, as inspiration, information resouce and just plain good reading. This is a GREAT quilter's book...and would make a wonderful gift for the quilterr who has very other book!!!

    Book Description

Excavations on the slopes of the Cittadella settlement at Morgantina in eastern Sicily have revealed nearly seventy tombs dating from the late eighth to the mid-fifth century B.C. In this volume, Claire Lyons presents a full publication of these Archaic cemeteries, examining the structure of the tombs, their rich range of grave furnishings, and the evidence for funerary ritual that they preserve. Often reused for multiple inhumation and cremation burials, these tombs provide significant documentation of the critical period when immigrant Greeks interacted with the substantial indigenous community, introducing foreign objects and practices that modified the local Iron Age funerary rite.

Detailed reconstructions of all of the burial contexts are presented in an illustrated catalog of the more than 1,350 artifacts found in the tombs. The author's close typological analysis of these grave goods--Attic, Corinthian, Lakonian, East Greek, colonial, and local pottery, as well as terracottas, jewelry, and metal objects--brings new evidence to bear on questions of chronology, production, trade, and function. A particularly intriguing chapter focuses on the meaning of the objects deposited with the dead in Archaic Morgantina, extracting from them information on class, social identity, gender, age, and ethnicity, as well as evidence for the process of transculturation that gradually transformed both the native and the colonial populations. The volume also contains an appendix on the human skeletal material, prepared by Marshall J. Becker.

Like many works published by the Getty, this book, simply put, is stunning. An absolute must own for fans of roman history, landscape history, or those seeking an informative, well illustrated, well produced book.

You needn't be an historian to appreciate this work.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative.............2005-06-30

Over the centuries during and since Rome ruled the Western world, Roman gardens and villas were copied - while they were extant, and then again when they were rediscovered in ruins. Designs from the grounds at Hadrian's villa in Tivoli, frescos depicting the gardens of the House of the Golden Bracelet unearthed in Pompeii, and the excavated grounds of Tiberius' villa at Sperlonga all indicate the Romans garnered ideas from ancient Persia, Greece, Egypt and elsewhere and in turn provided the inspiration for designs executed in later centuries by other artists.

Under the tutelage of Rome, structures and grounds such as those at the Villa Brioni in Croatia, Sabratha, Leptis Magna in Libya, and outposts in Morocco, Tunisia, England were developed as part of the Roman experience. This book suggests these structures and others are related to the "Great Houses"of 18th Century England, the Alhambra in Spain, and the J.Paul Getty Museum in Malibu.

This beautiful book, containing hundreds of color photos, captures the essence of THE GARDENS OF THE ROMAN WORLD -- Another fine art book for your collection.

Statues of the god Priapus stood in Roman gardens to warn potential thieves that the god would rape them if they attempted to steal from him. In this book, Richlin argues that the attitude of sexual aggressiveness in defense of a bounded area serves as a model for Roman satire from Lucilius to Juvenal. Using literary, anthropological, psychological, and feminist methodologies, she suggests that aggressive sexual humor reinforces aggressive behavior on both the individual and societal levels, and that Roman satire provides an insight into Roman culture. Including a substantial and provocative new introduction, this revised edition is important not only as an in-depth study of Roman sexual satire, but also as a commentary on the effects of all humor on society and its victims.

Excellent book which manages to chart the ... and (related) invectives, poetry and jokes of the late-republic/early Roman Empire. In contrast to the arid writing style of the New Historians on the classics, this is a breath of fresh air. She also provides good counter arguments to the ideas of Foucault and neo-Foucaultians, although not without problems; for example, she thinks the 'cinaedi', a term of insult roughly translated to today's 'queer', denoted a group of 'passive homosexuals', which she thinks was a (sub)cultural group in the Roman empire (there may well have been ... sub-cultures, but her idea is too reductive). Still, highly enjoyable, scholarly and recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient Roman Gardens.......2006-04-09

Linda Farrar has produced a gem. This book shows with care, sensitivity and scholarly love what made a Roman garden. She discusses the plants found in the garden but also writes with great skill how the Romans situated statues in the garden. Cicero, a famous Roman politician and writer, mentions in one of his letters how beautifully vines draped over the arms of statues in his brother's garden. Statues were not just placed in the garden but immersed in it; these lived in it. Often pools were designed to reflect the image of a nearby statue and its attendant plants. She also discusses other art work found in Roman gardens. In her efforts to give a feel for the garden she discusses its use: for discussion, parties, meals, play, family work. She discusses what these plants and statues meant to Romans. It was in this book that I learned how much Romans loved nature and how religious they were and how much they were devoted to the beauty of nature around them. Plants provided food, interest and drew in large numbers of birds, bees and butterflies. Roman gardens truly hummed. Linda Farrar's love of the Romans and their gardens flourishes on every page. Any one intending to visit Italy or Pompeii would profit from reading this book. At the end of her book she has excellent suggestions for creating one's own Roman garden.

              Book Description

In the spring, the Agora archaeological park becomes a shelter for wild roses, cyclamens, asphodels, and crocuses. Trees shade the pathways, and the ground is covered in anemones and daisies. Many of these plants are wild, but some were deliberately introduced to Athens in Classical times. Evidence for structured antique gardens has been discovered from the Temple of Hephaistos, while ancient writers describe the many uses plants could be put to. This booklet presents the evidence for ancient horticulture in the Agora and its color plates provide a useful guide to identifying modern Greek vegetation.

                Book Description

The glorious poetry of Rome has endured for more than two thousand years. For most of that time, it was read only in the original Latin, but over the centuries celebrated writers, from John Dryden to Aubrey Beardsley to Ezra Pound, have been inspired to create translations that reflect their
own ages, while retaining the vibrancy of the originals

A Garden of Roman Verse presents work by four of Rome's finest poets: Catullus, Horace, Ovid, and Virgil. Each poem appears in the original Latin and in English translation, and is illustrated with a detail from Roman paintings or mosaics. The subtle colors and haunting quality of the illustrations
evoke the spirit of the age in which this enchanting poetry was written. The combination of the poetry and illustrations, accompanied by notes on each poet and on Pompeii and Herculaneum--where some of the finest examples of Roman paintings were preserved--make this volume a perfect introduction to
                the towering civilization of Rome.

                Book Description

Every parent would happily give up ever scolding, punishing or threatening if she only knew how to ensure that her toddler/child/teen would thrive and act responsibly without such painful measures. Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves is the answer to this universal wish. It is not about gentle ways to control a child, but about a way of being and of understanding a child so she/he can be the best of herself, not because she fears you, but because she wants to, of her own free will.

"Aldort's book should be on the must read list of all Moms and Dads. This book could carry a subtitle: "Saving the Emotional Lives of Our Children and The Future of Humanity.""

                - James Prescott, Ph.D. Institute of Humanistic Science

"Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves operates on the radical premise that neither child nor parent must dominate; it is for those who want to give up scolding, threatening and punishing. Her SALVE "formula" alone is worth the price of the book." - Peggy O'Mara Editor and Publisher of Mothering

"Every once in awhile, a writer comes along who is comfortable speaking the truth, no matter how much it might challenge us or make us uncomfortable. Naomi Aldort is one of those people. In Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves, Naomi Aldort takes the struggle out of parenting and replaces controlling and shaping style of parenting with one that values, trusts and nurtures children's innate abilities and autonomy."

                - Wendy Priesnitz Editor of Life Learning magazine, author of School Free and Challenging Assumptions in Education

"In this stunning insight into human nature, Naomi Aldort opens a window into harmonious family living. This book should to be widely read and not just by parents but by every being who strives for a more peaceful world."

                - Veronika Robinson, Editor of The Mother magazine, UK

5 out of 5 stars I'm buying it for every parent I know.......2007-09-10

I recently read "Raising our Children, Raising Ourselves"
and I have to say that it is an amazing book and one that has created a
fundamental shift in how I approach my relationship with my children. I
have always been an advocate for gentle and respectful parenting, but this
book has offered me "mental" tools to examine my own internal world and
reactions to my children, and frankly, my spouse. I've passed it along to
several friends and they feel the same.

4 out of 5 stars Like any other good parenting book..........2007-08-31

...you take what is reasonable for you and your family and discard the stuff that is not. It flows along the lines of attachment parenting, Easy to Love; Difficult to Discipline type of thinking. I found many parts useful and enlightening AND there were parts where I found myself thinking "do what??" So, as with everything else; use it as a guideline, not a bible.

5 out of 5 stars If I recommended only one parenting book...........2007-04-13

This book is wonderful! Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. I want to recommend this to every parent I know, and some who aren't.

It is validating not only what I've been doing as a parent, but also what I secretly want to be doing, but am not sure about. I also struggle at times with compromising my commitment to my child to avoid losing approval from my parents. I feel totally clear now about not making that trade-off ever again.

And it's validating so, so many experiences and feelings I had as a child... Helping me have huge clarity around what I need for my healing process as an adult (just reading has felt immensely healing), and clarity around how to better respect and honor my husband in our marriage

This is EXACTLY the information I was looking for.

Thank you so much, Naomi Aldort

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-08

Very good book with focus on communication and relationship which nurturing child personality and dignity. Almost al "theoretical" explanations are provided with some examples. The underlined logic present in explanations are so acceptable.

I'm indeed interested in Montessori education. On some Montessori forum recommended this book. It's really very, very god book!

5 out of 5 stars Our world needs this book - QUICK!.......2007-03-06

I agree with most of the 5-star reviews here. This is the best parenting book I've found - a great leap from the many modern parenting books out there. In fact, I'd say it is the only parenting book you will ever need! Like another reviewer, I am ordering many copies and actively distributing to all the parents I know.

Finally, a book that spells out with crystal clarity that yes, you can respect and trust your children fully, and love them unconditionally, without any "ifs" and "buts".

Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves provides the tools for being always kind and loving in our day-to-day interactions with our children, and illustrates the guidance via eloquent real-life examples. These tools are easy to remember and put to practice, and they actually work. This book has transformed my relationship with my 10-month old, giving me permission to fully love her the way I always felt - without holding back ANYTHING! Quite a liberating shift. The guidance carries all the way from infancy through the teen years, and I am so grateful that I stumbled upon it while she is still little!

The transformative effect of the book goes way beyond parenting, as both the title, and the subtitle proposed by James Prescott on the cover ('Saving the emotional lives of our children and the future of humanity'), suggest. It lays out a readily available path to self-healing and self-realization through our relationship with our children (as well as with other people): simply by starting to examine how we respond to others a little more closely. Imho, this is one of the most important books ever written, period.

I have a wish. I grew up in Europe (France) and, really, I CANNOT WAIT to see the book available there as well, in other languages, and start infusing its wisdom and compassion overseas. Any publisher out there interested in making a difference? Call Naomi today, you'll do yourself and the world a favor. Our world needs this book. QUICK!
