Win with Bob Avila.......2001-10-10
This book really addresses the psychological aspect of riding. Avila looks at attitude and professionalism in the sport, and gives keys and words of wisdom that will enable the reader to develop a 'winning attitude'. A very positive book that would benefit anyone wanting to go to 'the next level' with their horse, wether they intend to show or not.

A MUST READ for all horseman.......2001-04-17

Perfect for the beginner.......2004-05-30
I just started collecting Oriental coins. This book is a great teaching and identifiying aid. Tells you how to find the date, denomination, and ruler on Chinese coins (and others). I suspect that some who have been collecting for a long time may find it lacking in some areas, but for me it is just what I needed. I would recommend it to anyone interested in collecting coins from around the world.
Not perfect, but surely indispensable.......2004-02-27
The Standard Catalog of World Coins is undoubtedly the best selling coin reference book and a vital reference material for all collectors. The book is certainly not perfect however, and although it is a must-have publication for all those who collect coins from all over the world, there are several mistakes and omissions.
Keeping track of prices is also very difficult and I suspect that in some cases at least, the price quotes come from the application of a general formula (data, mintage, denomination, metals used etc), rather than the international or local market itself. This is not much of a problem if you are only interested in identifying your coins or get a rough estimate of their value, but keep in mind that the prices included are certainly not accurate. The coin market is so volatile that it couldn't have happened any other way.
Should you buy the 2004 version (or 2005 for that matter) if you already own a previous one? Since i live in Europe, the recent currency change had a tremendous effect on coin collecting and the euros were first included in the 2004 edition. Therefore, the answer is yes, as i will probably be buying the 2005 edition too, which will contain many commemorative euros produced in the mean time. If there haven't been any radical changes in the coins you are interested in, maybe you should keep the old one for a couple of years before purchasing a new one.
In general, the Standard Catalog of World Coins is a comprehensive Catalog, which -despite its flaws- is indispensable. Major points of concern are the black & white pictures, and the huge size of this monster that really should move to the digital age and come on a CD. Of course software piracy is a key issue, but this media would realy help collectors access the content.

It is a pre- Euro catalog........2002-12-10
This animal is good for pointing out many coins that may be missed in the smaller magazines and at trade shows. However it is a catalog, about the size of a phone book and with so few advertisers that they are negligible.
There are no fancy color pictures just coins and lots of them divided into countries; so many coins that it can make your head spin if you are not searching for a particular theme. The shallow part of the book is the depth of time.
This version came out before the Euro however I am collecting Notgeld and trade dollars.
When I write reviews I look for a stumper or two. Well this book passed. I looked up the "Wailbligen 100". Sure as shoot'n there it was with an explanation and references to Porcelain coins.
Comprehensive catalog, but with flaws.......2002-08-04
No question, this is the best, if not the only reference, for someone, whether collector or dealer, desiring a worldwide comprehensive volume of twentieth and twenty-first century coins. If it has been issued since 1901, you'll probably find it in here (though a few issues get overlooked and later included, but that is not a major flaw).
The problem is that, with the endless stream of non circulating coins being issued by governments (and in some cases, "governments" needs quotation marks. As does coins.), Krause is being forced to fit more and more into a volume which has already reached its limits on size, thickness, smallness of print, and thinness of paper. Something's got to give. Unfortunately, what has given is that the valuable reference material (such as original prices for coin sets) has vanished from its pages.
Maybe it is time to put the junk, like Marshall Islands and similar ilk, into a second volume which, like the pre-1900 issues volumes, gets updated only every two years or so. Or put on a CD-ROM.
Fact remains, though, this is an indispensible reference book for the coin collector and dealer. And mostways, it is pretty good.

For all you people who have a huge stash of coins especially or for just starting to collect this a must have. With this if you have any "clean" rare coins this keeps them clean and no damage is done. For everyone who has Quarter Folders aren't those hard to put in. Well, this is 10 times easier to put in.

Bluebook is better for collectors.......2005-05-24
The "Bluebook" is a better choice of coin collectors. The redbook is a RETAIL price guide, intended for dealers. I also noted the population data for state quarter proofs is significantly incorrect. The book's data only accounts for proof quarters sold in 5 piece sets. There were millions more made each year included in the 10 piece sets. Compare the numbers on pages 70 and 152.

Sorry LeadPedal2, but you are wrong, and I hope not too many people have been driven away from this wonderfully written, helpful, and complete book by your false statements.
This book DOES contain information on Proof and Uncirculated sets sold by the U.S. Mint, on pages 68-71.
Also, to the previous reviewer - I don't know what problem you see with the color pictures, perhaps your edition was misprinted. The full-color pictures in my edition are beautiful, clear, and very helpful.
I've been collecting both the Red and Blue books since 1993 as a nice compliment to my coin collection, and this edition maintains Yeoman and Whitman's high standards. I am very happy with this book, and highly recommend it to other coin collectors, beginners through those with much experience.
Good for what it includes, but where's the proof?.......2004-05-22
This book is good for what it includes, but there is a glaring and shocking omission! There is no info on proof sets, only on some individual coins. With the introduction of state quarter sets, annual proof sets have become a hot commodity, yet this book completely overlooks the entire category!
Ouch! Better stick with 2003 edition for reference.......2003-08-13
This 2004 edition of a standard reference disappoints; if you can get it, I recommend the 2003 edition for now, especially if it's your first coin book purchase. While there are some ongoing improvements (more commemorative coin images), there are two major strikes against this edition: 1) A bunch of new color images have been added throughout - and they're horrible. 2) Whitman has filled some of the blank space with ads, increasing the number of ads for Whitman products five-fold, usually popping up between denominations.
The new images are failures because they are digital images that were incorrectly prepared for press. The artifacting in the images is so bad, for example, that the 1858 flying eagle cent large/small letter variety isn't clear to the novice eye. Many of the large cent date varieties look terrible, and in some pictures you can't even discern what the difference is supposed to be. The editor has provided a reference book that fails as a reference - no small feat.
As for the ads, Whitman certainly has the right, but the vivid colors just feel distasteful; I don't mind them at the back, where they're a handy reference, but our lives are stuffed with enough commercial filler - can't I avoid it while looking up my coins?
A couple of new varieties are added, expanding beyond the addition of recent Lincoln varieties in 2002. The state quarters section has been attractively improved, and images now exist for all quarters designs to date. Interestingly, the hard times tokens at the rear are eliminated, and a section on pattern pieces added instead. I always find patterns fascinating examples of 'what could have been', so I laud this addition, as it lends the starting hobbyist a little peek into an area I find more exciting than tokens. That's a subjective viewpoint though, and the only reason I gave the book a 2 instead of a 1. I'm saddened that it falls so far short of where the 2003 edition came to.

This book is an excellent resource for the new collector or the old collector who is staring to purchase coins. It is easy to understand and the layout makes it easy to find your coin. It could contain more info on different grades of coins from good to uncirculated, most are just fine to uncirculated. A must have for the new collector!

This is definately not a 2000 book. Coin dates stop at 1984. What a waste of money this book was.

This book is by far the best for refering all US Coins and gives a far price listing for all coins. Great for beginners and expert collectors. If you going to collect coins this book is a must.

This easy-to-read reference is a great way to look up any coin and embellish your collection. With commemorative information and a great civil/revolutionary war section, i think anyone serious about their oin collection should think about buying this book.
